Jay R. Addison of Angola, NY entered into rest after a lengthy illness on September 26, 2018, Age 71, Jay was born in Buffalo, NY March 26, 1947 to the late E. Joseph Addison and Mariellen Garlock, growing up in the Angola/Evans Community. After graduating from Lake Shore High School, Angola, NY in 1965 he attended Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, NY receiving his degree in Funeral Directing in 1968. Jay worked the following 5 years for O’Rourke & O’Rourke Funeral Home in Salamanca, NY before taking a position with the W.S. Davis Funeral Home in Arcade, NY. In 1981 he and his wife Mary Margaret (Buchner) Addison purchased the Heimburg Funeral Home presently known as the Addison Funeral Home, in their hometown of Angola, NY, where they operated the business for over 30 years before passing it on to their sons Randy and Scott Addison in 2011. Jay was an active volunteer throughout the years, formerly coaching youth football for the Salamanca Sabres and Tri Town Trojans, serving many officer positions including Chief with the Delevan Vol. Fire Co and Angola Vol. Fire Companies., a former member of the board of directors with the Steeple View Housing Development, Claddagh Commission and Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce, former 4 year councilman with the Town of Evans, past member of the Fortune Lodge #788 F&AM, a 26 year member and past president of the Evans Township Lions club where he was recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship, Robert J. Uplinger and International President Appreciation Awards. Jay and Mary enjoyed traveling and skiing with friends, as well as exploring the western states with their recreational vehicle. Jay was also an avid archer and trap shooter participating in many events at local area gun clubs. He will long be remembered for his handsome smile, quick wit and humorous story telling abilities. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Margaret (Buchner) Addison, two sons; Randy (Barb Sedita) and Scott (Danelle) Addison, grandchildren; Parker, Alexis, Jared and Jacey Addison, brothers; Jeff "Robin" (Linda) Addison and Ken Kloss. He is pre deceased by his son Terry J. Addison and parents; E. Joseph Addison and Mariellen (Garlock) Braeges. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, NY. Interment services followed in Brant Cemetery, Brant, NY. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Angola or the SPCA. __________

Kathleen Lee Harvey of Angola, NY, passed away Tuesday October 2, 2018 in Buffalo Mercy Hospital, she was 67. Soul mate of David Currey; loving mother of Frank, Joseph (Kathy) and the late Edward Augustyniak. Sister of Laura Lee Yeager and Linda Lerczak. Grandmother of Joseph, Gracie, Edward, Alicia and Danny.

Reva O. MacDowell

Reva O. MacDowell entered into rest Wednesday October 3, 2018 in her Town Of Brant home, surrounded by her loving family, she was 98. Reva was born October 7, 1919 in Brant, NY, daughter of the late Albert and Helen Brinkman. Reva was a homemaker and happily helped her late husband Lawrence sell Christmas trees in the 60’s and 70’s. She is survived by her daughters Arlene Miller of Brant, NY and Claudia (Bernard) Carlin of Baltimore, MD. She was predeceased by her son Warren MacDowell and his daughter Karen Sue, and brothers Albert Jr., Stanley, Wilson and Ernest Brinkman. Grandmother of Justin, Nathan Miller, Benjamin, Jay White, Scott, Jeff and Ian MacDowell. Great grandmother of Lukas, Elyse Miller, Zaria, Whitney White, Zachary, Emma, Madison, Bailey Mackenna and Farrah MacDowell. Graveside services were held Friday in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery, Farnham, NY. Flowers gratefully declined.

Angola LSC Alumni Celebrates Homecoming

On September 7, 2018, the Angola Lake Shore Alumni Association Board Members celebrated Homecoming Weekend with the Senior High School students. Board members Shirley Pfalzgraf and Honorary Member Ron Pfalzgraf attended the high school pep rally where they presented the Senior Homecoming King and Queen with trophies. The Alumni Association donates the trophies annually. This year Christina Dingeldey and Cyrus Farner were awarded with the titles of Homecoming Queen and King. All involved were filled with Lake Shore school spirit!

Later that evening the Alumni board members judged the Homecoming parade floats. There were over 20 floats decorated in a carnival theme, created by many different community groups! Some of the groups that participated in the parade were, the students grade levels and groups, the LS Teachers, Marching Band, the Boys and Girls Club, School board members, LSC Transportation, LSC Junior Cheer and football, and local firefighters and police! A great deal of hard work and creativity was put into the floats and everyone was excited to be there. The winning floats were 1st place Juniors, 2nd place Varsity Cheer, 3rd place Junior Varsity Cheer and 4th place the LSC Transportation department. After judging, the Alumni Association joined the parade and handed out candy to the viewers. Everyone proceeded to the High School to enjoy the Homecoming game!

From the Old Photo Album Grape Season in Brant, N.Y. in the early 1900’s

It’s grape season in the town of Brant and our local farmers are busy with their harvests! Today’s photo (one of many donated

by Jeanne Treat), is printed from a glass plate negative and depicts Ruthe Walters in the vineyard picking grapes in the early 1900’s. The Walter’s farm was located on Milestrip and Hammond Road in the town of Brant. Ruthe had two brothers; Max and Lynn. Her brother Lynn E. Walters was a photographer and this is one of his photos. Ruthe later married Henry Miller and together they ran Miller’s Beach on the shores of lake Erie in the town of Brant.

Lake Shore Central School District Receives Grant for Teacher Mentoring Program

The Lake Shore Central School District is proud to announce that they have been awarded a $43,200 grant for the Mentor Teacher Internship Program (MTIP) by the New York State Education Department. The highly effective program is designed to mentor new teachers in public school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) over a five-year period. The grant will go into effect this October.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity here at Lake Shore,” said Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Melissa Bergler. “We’ve had a successful mentoring plan in place at Lake Shore for a number of years, but this funding allows our teachers to purchase customized supplies for their classrooms and attend workshops that will meet their needs as a new teacher.”

Annually funded by the State Legislature, the MTIP supports public school districts in creating and offering organized leadership activities from highly qualified teachers to beginning teachers in their first or second year of teaching.

The MTIP also provides opportunities for beginning teachers to broaden and enhance their classroom teaching and related skills while participating in a productive, supportive and collegial mentoring experience. Research shows that when teachers new to their positions are paired with experienced mentors, they are more likely to improve their instructional skills and eventually become mentors themselves .

Additionally, the grant will pay for all mentor stipends, the program facilitator, and substitute teachers needed when mentors and mentees are engaged in workshops.

“New teachers are always looking to their peers for effective classroom strategies, and this grant will help us create new ways for them to collaborate to make sure the most current tactics are being applied in our classrooms.”
