Legislator Mills Presents Donations to Local Libraries

Erie County Legislator John Mills has donated 700 dollar checks to the Orchard Park, Angola, Boston, Town of Col lins, North Collins, Eden, and Concord Public Libraries. Legislator Mills also donated 21 pounds of hotdogs to the Town of Collins, North Collins, Eden, Angola and Boston libraries to support their annual fundraisers. In recent weeks, Legislator Mills has stopped by each library to present individual checks to board members and thank them for their service to the community. Legislator Mills said, “Our libraries provide invaluable resources to the community and are enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether it’s through encouraging reading, of fering educational programs or family-friendly activities, libraries serve us in countless ways. These donations are just one way to express our appreciation for everything they do. I thank the directors and board members of each of these libraries for all of their hard work, and I am proud to lend my continued support.” Contributed by the Office of Legislator Mills __________

School-Run Evans Bank Branch Now Open

Getting a bank account is a big step in becoming an adult. Having a safe and well-managed savings and checking account is the first step in financial freedom to help one in getting a decent car, saving for an apartment, and getting a debit card. You Juniors Jessica Rinehart and Bren- may have heard the term nen Hering are ready to work the “bankers hours” before. school-run Evans Bank branch That’s when most banks are open for business but unfortunately it’s also the time when students are busy at school. That is not a problem for the students at Lake Shore. They have their very own bank branch right in the high school. The juniors of the Academy of Business & Finance at Lake Shore High School work the school-run bank that is partnered with Evans Bank. On a day-to-day basis the stu dents interact with customers and make transactions for them. Some of the most beneficial aspects for Academy about working in the bank are getting experience in a joblike atmosphere, working on their customer service skills, and learning how everything works. The bank is open during lunch hours, Monday through Friday, for any student or employee who has an account with Evans Bank. They can deposit cash or checks to their account during that time. Every transaction made in the school bank gets transferred to the Evans bank. An ATM is conveniently located outside the branch so students can check account balances and access their money. The Academy students find that it is important for students to use the school bank because they are getting experience banking by themselves during school hours, and they are learning how to do everything independently. Exchange Student Shares About Spain with LS High School Foreign Language Club

Things look and sound a lot different from 4700-some miles away. So, when Lake Shore High School foreign ex change student Nuriah Sanchez introduced herself to the school’s Foreign Language Club, she did it in Spanish … so students could hear what native-Spain Spanish sounds like. Nuriah, who is from Madrid, was inspired to come to the U.S. by her brother who studied in Chicago last year. It was simply fate that brought her here, she said. She applied to go anywhere and she was selected to go to Lake Shore. Nuriah showed photographs from Spain, ranging from summer camp and gym class to coastal vacations and her parents. She allowed as she prefers Spain’s food and misses her family, but loves everything else about America. And she revealed the biggest stereotype of Americans in Spain: the belief is that our high schools are exactly like the teen film “High School Musical,” with the cliques and all! She answered several questions about the differences between the U.S. and Spain regarding the education sys tem and school procedures. In Spain, she said, the stu dents wear uniforms. They stay in one room all day with the same classmates while their teachers rotate in and out. There are no school sports - if they want to participate in sports, they must join clubs outside of school. Nuriah is staying for the academic year with the family of Lindsay Nau, a junior. She will go back to Spain to finish high school, but ultimately hopes to live and study to be a teacher in the U.S. Photo: Exchange student Nuriah Sanchez, from Madrid, introduces herself in Spanish to the Foreign Language Club. Our historical societies were each given a unique donation in 2016; a research project of James E. Greene devoted to redis covering the Buffalo and Lake Erie Trolley line. His book and presentation encouraged the idea of a “Rail to Trail” scenario. Jim notes that the entire original trolley line was 93 miles long and included 91 stations (all at grade) from Buffalo, N.Y. to Erie, P.A. This particular line of transportation was in exis tence from 1908 to 1933. His project booklet (complete with “then and now” photos) is dedicated to the Northern half of the trolley line which is 43 miles long with 40 stations. Jim writes that “near the mid-point” of the 93 mile trolley line “is the Vil lage of Angola, my childhood hometown”. Speaking of the village of Angola, our photo today is a print from a glass plate negative, donated to the Brant-Farnham His torical Society by Jeanne Treat 5 years ago. The photographer was Lynn E. Walters of Brant, N.Y. The photo depicts a B & LE trolley car in the village of Angola, in front of the what was then known as the Bank of Angola on Commercial Street in the early 1900’s. It is shown between station “#19 AngolaClifton’s” which was located at the corner of Main and School Streets and station “#20 Tile Works” which was located a bit further down Commercial Street. In the 1973 VILLAGE OF ANGOLA CENTENNIAL BOOKLET Mrs. Joan Huston ex plains to us that “a trolley station was built at the corner of Main and School Streets in 1912. Passenger service between Buffalo and Erie was possible every forty minutes.” According to Jim Greene’s research we further learn that “Clifton’s was a larger station which also handled freight. This was a very busy station as Angola had a lot of business activity as well as summer residents and vacationers going back and forth to the nearby lake Erie shoreline.” Jim’s research lists 10 trolley sta tions in the town of Evans and 3 found within the town of Brant and village of Farnham. The station names listed are: 13-North Evans, 14-Overhead Bridge, 15-Derby, 16-Burns Road, 17-New Road, 18-Pike’s Crossing, 19-Angola-Clifton’s, 20-Tile Works, 21-Delaware Creek, 22-Laverty’s, 23-East Line-town of Brant, 24-Nordblum’s Dead Creek Siding, 25-Farnham-Walker Broth ers. In his booklet section titled “Conclusions”, Jim shares that he looks forward to the possibility of the trolley trails re-open ing for some type of recreational use especially between the areas of Eighteen Mile Creek and Farnham. This idea would be of historical interest especially because Farnham still has the original trolley tunnels! Contributed by Evans and Brant-Farnham Historical Societies __________

On September 28 the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer Players of Eden held their third annual dulcimer workshop at the Eden United Methodist Church. The guest dulcimer artist was Joe Collins from North Carolina. Joe Collins is a national dulcimer player champion in addition to being a nationally known dulcimer teacher, composer and ar ranger. He taught the eighteen participants, who included eight new friendly dulcimer players from out of the Eden area, subjects such as playing embellishments - hammeron, pull-off, slides, songs for children, traditional Appala chian songs and a few humorous tunes. At the end of the instruction period, Joe gave a short concert and then, the following day, Sunday morning, he performed in church, singing and playing a new arrangement of Amazing Grace and then one of his own compositions. His performance, both days, was acclaimed by all who heard him.
