Loss of jobs and income, loss of housing and even loss of life are all by-products of this horrible sickness. As a result, Most Precious Blood Church’s yearly warm clothing drive Project Keep Evans Warm will include a food and paper drive. The goal of this effort will be to assist Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) to meet the increasing demand. All collections will be turned over to OGN for distribution to families in need and residing in the Town of Evans free of charge. For warm clothing we will accept winter coats, gloves, boots and hats in all sizes, colors and styles. Children’s sizes are very popular. We ask that any clothing donated be clean. For food we will accept dry and canned with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Baby food is in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper so these will be collected also. This is the Project’s 7th year and each year requests for assistance far exceeds what can be collected. This year the pandemic will certainly make matters challenging. This can easily be a community effort and we encourage all work places, churches, volunteer fire departments and schools to participate and directly work with OGN or you can call 481-4480 or 507-6703 to arrange for pick-up of any items donated. Muriel J. Wolff (Nee Jackson) Muriel J. Wolff (nee Jackson) formerly of Angola, NY, passed away at age 94. Born June 5, 1926 in Janesville, Wisconsin and died peacefully October 21, 2020 at Fox Run in Orchard Park, NY. Muriel was active in Eastern Star and proudly served as Matron. She was also a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine and the UCC Engineers. Muriel was an avid reader, loved sharing memories of days gone by, and enjoyed running the jewelry booth at the First Congregational UCC’s annual bazaar. She cared deeply for her friends and will be sadly missed. Muriel is predeceased by her mother Esther (Buskirk) Jackson, father Lorenzo Jackson, sister Arlene and brother Gerald. Former wife of the late Charles Wolff. Companion of the late Casimir “Scotty” Potaczala. Emily Seidenstricker Winters (and her ironic connection with Chief Joseph Brant)

The following story of Emily Seidenstricker Winters was shared with us by her grandson Mark Winters. Mark, who was born in Brant, N.Y. is the son of Frederick F. Winters Jr. and Lorraine (Beyer) Winters.

“My paternal grandmother Emily L. Seidenstricker, married my grandfather, Frederick W. Winters, Sr., in 1915. A “city girl” from Buffalo, N.Y., born in 1894; she was the last born of six children. Emily had graduated from Lafayette High School and obtained a brief teacher training at “Normal School” (as was done back then), later being recruited to teach on the Cattaraugus Reservation. She taught in a “one room” school house on the reservation and lived with one of the local Seneca families. There were occasional social gatherings attended by young people from Brant and the surrounding area. It was at one of these events that my grandmother Emily met my grandfather Frederick W. Winters, Sr., who, along with some others, played music. Emily’s father Henry A. Seidenstricker (1833 - 1901), was from Baltimore and had come to Buffalo, N.Y. in Emily Seidenstricker Winters, 1866 to work as a bookkeeper for a factory owned by his Brant, NY, 1943 first wife’s family - a Baltimore family by the name of Bullymore. The building of the Erie Canal had helped Buffalo, N.Y. become a prosperous, growing place. The Bullymore family opened a manufacturing business of some sort in Buffalo (chemicals and etc.) and needed a bookkeeper/accountant to work there. They offered this job to their son-in-law. Not long after arriving in Buffalo, Henry’s wife Frances (Bullymore) Seidenstricker, died. She is buried in Forest Lawn. They had no children. In 1871 Henry remarried; a young woman named Frances Clute. They had four children, two boys and two girls and Henry eventually went to work for Buffalo Savings Bank as a bookkeeper, later becoming the Head of that department. Henry was able to build two homes in the city; they lived first on Porter Avenue and later, off Parkside in North Buffalo. Forest Lawn Cemetery and Delaware Park were nearby. They were quite prosperous and had two more children; a boy, Robert and a girl, Emily (my grandmother). The older four children were now in their early teens. In 1901, the Pan American Exposition was not far from their home and one of Emily’s older brothers had a job tending an attraction based on an imagined trip to the moon. (Sadly, our 25th U.S. President, William McKinley was assassinated while he was visiting the Pan American Exposition in 1901.) Emily’s father Henry, died in late summer of this same year - 1901. His death left the family in bad financial straits and while they were able to keep the house, things were tougher for them. Emily’s grandfather, John B. Seidenstricker (1809 - 1895) spent most of his life in Baltimore and was a pillar of the community. John B. Seidenstricker has quite a biographical write up in a Baltimore City directory/ history from the 1880’s of which I [Mark] have possession. In this historical sketch, the writers mention that John B. Seidenstricker’s grandmother’s family escaped the Indian raids in the Wyoming area of Pennsylvania. The area of the Wyoming Valley (south of modern day Binghamton, N.Y. and north of N.Y.’s Cherry Valley, along with the Mohawk River Valley), was at the westernmost point of settlement by early American colonists. It was this area that was targeted by the British and their Iroquois allies. The Oneida’s were the only tribe of the SIX nations that remained with the colonists from the start of the American Revolution. The rest of the Iroquois Confederacy sided with the British. Fort Niagara was the western headquarters for the British Army. From this westernmost point, the British Rangers Emily Seidenstricker, 1914, and their Native American allies, led by JOSEPH BRANT, age 20, a teacher on went off to the east to cause what mayhem they could with Cattaraugus Indian Reservation the settlers. Because of this, I thought it ironic that my grandmother Emily, would end up living on the Indian Reservation, working there as a teacher in her early years. She eventually taught at the Thomas Indian School, working there well into the 1950’s. My grandmother always spoke highly of her Native American friends and the Native American students she had known and taught. She was an honorary inductee into the Turtle Clan and proud to say so. After marrying my grandfather, Emily lived in Brant, N.Y. from 1915 – 1956. [The town of Brant is named after Chief Joseph Brant* – another ironic twist to Emily’s story.] A few years after Frederick Sr.’s death in 1949, Emily remarried and moved to Taylor Hollow Rd in Collins, N.Y. She lived an active life and died in 1983. She is buried in the Brant Cemetery with my grandfather, Frederick W. Winters, Sr.” [The Town of Brant, formed through legislative action on March 25, 1839 was named in honor of Joseph Brant*, the famous chief of the Mohawk Indians who was a British Ally during the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War, occurred during the years 1775-1783. It was a war between Great Britain and its thirteen colonies which declared independence as the United States of America.
