Michael Collopy

Michael Collopy of of Derby died October 26, 2019 following a battle with ALS. He was 73. Born in Buffalo in 1946, Michael attended Lake Shore Central High School, and was a Buffalo State College graduate with a Masters Degree in Secondary Education. Michael was an avid athlete before ALS decided it had other plans. An All-American in track and field, he captained the New York State cross country championship team of 1968, was a New York State Intercollegiate champion in multiple events, was voted MVP of the indoor and outdoor track teams, and won the Hugh Coyer Award for career accomplishments. He is in the Buffalo State College Athletic Hall of Fame for this, as well as his success as a coach. Michael coached cross country and track at Buffalo State from 1977-1982, where he produced 21 AllAmericans and established numerous school records. He was named NY State Intercollegiate Athletics Coach of the Year in 1981, when he took the squad to its first NYS Indoor Championship. Michael kept competing in track even while coaching young athletes. He won the National United States Sub-Master 880-yard and 600-yard indoor championships in his 30’s. At age 40, he was a member of the California Striders that established the world record for Masters in the 4x800 relay. More important than the records set and the medals won, were the lives that he touched. Michael dedicated himself to education and the betterment of the next generation, both on the track and in the classroom. A Buffalo Public Schools teacher for 31 years, he specifically taught in places where he knew he could make the greatest impact, and brought his love

Collopy cont’d... of Track and Field to his students. In addition to creating track programs and coaching for free, he also founded the Western New York Track Club to allow any young athlete with an interest to compete. When Michael wasn’t running, he spent time traversing the Cattaraugus both on his own and with his fishing buddies for over 54 years, who affectionately referred to him as the “Master of the Catt.” His greatest passion of all was his family: his beloved wife of forty-four years, Diana; his three daughters, Lauren, Krista and Adrienne; five grandchildren; and three siblings, Cathy, Peter and Joan. They remember fondly his love of terrible movies, competing wildly over cards and board games, and talking about life and the world with a glass of quality wine. Michael will be remembered at a service beginning at 11 am on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the First Congregational UCC located at 132 N. Main Street in Angola, NY. Arrangements by Addiosn Funeral Home, Inc. He encourages anyone to honor and remember him at anytime by getting out on the track, helping someone else, and enjoying a glass of good wine. ___________

HOSLER

HOSLER HAS put the Town of Evans in the forefront by networking with all levels of government that has allowed us to receive thousands of dollars of money and services from outside agencies to help with town improvements.

LET’S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT... YOU BE THE JUDGE, JUST HAVE ALL THE FACTS

HOSLER HAS negotiated fair and equitable union contracts making them affordable to the taxpayers, the employees, and the Town, which has stabilized our workforce. HOSLER HAS worked with the unions to make adjustments to the Town healthcare plans, ensuring the cost is fair and equitable to both the employees and to the taxpayers footing the bill. No Town, County, State or Federal agencies give free healthcare as a benefit anymore, those times are gone, especially when it’s paid for on the backs of the taxpayers. Even our seniors pay for their healthcare. HOSLER HAS worked for all of us, that is not “Anti-Union”... that is leadership.

Re -Elect MARY

HOSLER

TOWN OF EVANS SUPERVISOR

A Message from Supervisor Hosler The Town of Evans deserves good government that is fiscally responsible.

I worked endlessy to fix the problems of the past and we are now moving forward towards economic growth and prosperity. I diligently eliminated our debt, recovered lost revenue and established yearly balanced budgets that value and protect your tax dollars. I did this by relying on my conservative values and financial experience. I had to make some very tough decisions, cuts in department budgets, health insurance plans were adjusted and reasonable union contracts were negotiated and ratified. All of this helped us to stabilize our town financially. Four years later the Town of Evans is fiscally healthy and experiencing a revitalization. We have eliminated budget deficits, we have an “A” stable bond rating, we finished 2018 without needing to borrow money, and we were still able to reduce your taxes. Our future is bright and I remain committed to addressing and responding to resident issues that impact the quality of life. I will continue to concentrate on increasing property values, and supporting smart economic development. I hope that you feel I have earned a second term. I am asking for your vote on November 5th. Sincerely,

Let’s keep moving forward Paid for by Friends of Mary Hosler

Legislators Mills and Dixon Join Rally in Opposition to Wind Turbines in Lake Erie

Erie County Legislator John Mills joined Senator Chris Jacobs, Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello, Legislator Lynne Dixon, the ‘Citizens Against Wind Turbines’ group, and other community members at a ‘defend our lake’ rally in Irving Sunday morning. Those in attendance voiced their opposition to a potential plan to install up to 50 wind turbines in Lake Erie. Speakers addressed environmental, public safety, and economic reasons for opposing the wind turbines. Legislator Mills said, “I would like to thank all who continue to voice their concerns with this plan. Protecting our fresh drinking water and environmental assets remains a top priority of mine and are among the many reasons I oppose this project. We must send a strong message that wind turbines do not belong in our lake.” Legislator Dixon said, “It’s important we protect one of our largest natural resources which is why I remain strongly opposed to any plan that would put wind turbines in Lake Erie. I appreciate the residents and MISC. SERVICE elected officials who continue to voice concerns.” & REPAIR Contributed by the Office of Legislator Mills SEWING & ALTERATIONS __________

BUFFALO, N.Y. (October 29, 2019)—Erie County Clerk Michael P. “Mickey” Kearns was joined by Erie County Legislator John Mills, New York State Assemblyman David DiPietro, Evans Town Supervisor Mary Hosler, and representatives from the Western New York Law Center to announce the start of “ZOMBIES Property Awareness Week” in Erie County during a press conference Monday morning at a vacant and abandoned Zombie property in the Town of Evans. Kearns, who began fighting against these Zombie properties when he was a South District Councilman in Buffalo and continued it as an Assemblyman, was instrumental in having the Zombie Property and Foreclosure Prevention Act signed into law. After seeing a rise of foreclosure filings at the Clerk’s Office, he presented a funding proposal to the Legislature for the Erie County Clerk’s ZOMBIES Initiative, which was approved unanimously. The WNY Law Center won the RFP bid and is leading the Initiative, which kicked off in June. Since then, the Initiative team has met with nearly every Erie County municipality to educate them on how to resolve Zombie property issues in their communities. At last week’s Erie County Legislature session, Legislators Mills and Joseph Lorigo sponsored a resolution to name this week “ZOMBIES Property Awareness Week” in the county. The Initiative has provided each legislator and municipal leaders with information about how residents can spot Zombie properties; what constitutes a Zombie property; and how to report Zombie properties in their neighborhoods. Monday’s announcement was held at an Erie Road home that has been vacant for more than seven years, according to Jordan Zeranti, Esq., Managing Attorney for the ZOMBIES Initiative. The homeowner fell behind on her mortgage payment after getting sick and entering a nursing home. “A lis pendens, which is the first step in a foreclosure action, was not filed until November, 2016 and there has been no movement on the foreclosure case since then,” said Zeranti. The mortgage, originally held by Amerifirst Mortgage Corporation, was assigned to Bank of America and then subsequently to The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in April, 2010. Novad Management Consulting is the loan servicer on this Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan. For the past several years, the Town of Evans has been footing the bill for basic maintenance, like cutting the grass, and saw no end to this growing issue until Jeneen Hill, the Town’s Assessor and Code Enforcement Officer, contacted the Erie County Clerk’s ZOMBIES Initiative team.

Once the case was reviewed, Zeranti said a complaint was registered with the Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Initiative Team is now working with the Town on its next steps. “If the servicer continues to ignore their property maintenance obligations under New York State Law Real Property Actions and Proceedings Law (RPAPL) Section 1308, then we intend to bring suit on behalf of the Town of Evans. Though compliance is the ultimate goal, we will litigate where necessary and will seek $500 per day for each day the violation existed.” “I am disgusted and I am upset the Federal government has allowed Housing and Urban Development to leave a property in this condition. Shame on them,” Kearns said at the press conference. “You can be assured we will bring legal action against them to ensure this property is cleaned up for the Town of Evans.” Kearns continued: “We thank the Erie County Legislature for proclaiming this week Zombie Property Awareness Week. As the County Clerk, I am proud to put in place some of the most progressive programs, including the Erie County Clerks ZOMBIES Initiative to combat the negative impacts of Zombie properties in Erie County.” Legislator Mills, whose district includes Evans, added: “These abandoned properties continue to plague our communities. It is our hope that through this week of awareness, we can draw attention to the need to hold lenders accountable and rid Erie County of Zombie properties. We hope everyone will help us spread the word about this important week-long campaign.” Legislator Lynne Dixon added: “We need action against these Zombie homes because this problem is extremely frustrating for these town officials.” Evans Supervisor Hosler is confident this Initiative will finally bring results to the vacant and abandoned homes in her Town. “We have more than 100 Zombie properties in Evans that we are now maintaining at a cost last year of $250,000. These Zombie homes are costing our Erie County taxpayers money. That’s why I applaud Mickey Kearns’ efforts to end this issue by bringing legal action against the mortgage holders.” Assemblyman DiPietro added: “This is not a political issue but rather, a quality of life issue that affects all of our residents. When I was mayor of East Aurora, I was frustrated by these Zombie homes and I applaud Mickey Kearns’ position on this subject by standing up for residents and communities and working to bring an end to this issue.”

The ZOMBIES Initiative is defined as: Zero Tolerance Open Lines of Communication Municipal participation Bank Accountability Investment in neighborhoods Engage & educate communities Solutions
