From The Old Photo Album

Military Veterans of Holy Cross Church, Farnham, N.Y.

Written in 1964, the 100 year anniversary booklet of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Farnham, N.Y., states that the old wooden church building was completely destroyed by fire on August 18, 1930. As the church building in this photograph is the older church, we know the photo was taken prior to the date of the fire. The photo appears to be honoring members of Holy Cross Church who were serving or had served in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. The 100th year anniversary booklet also highlighted that “during World War I, three of our members lost their lives while in the service of our country. They were Max Grundkovski, Herman Timmerman and William Hoth.” A few pages further we read that “with the entrance of the United States into World War II, many of young men (33 in all) were called into the armed services of our nation.” Four boys of the congregation gave their lives in this war: and “the four casualties were: Edward Stuering lost at sea October, 1942. Raymond Koch lost his life in North Africa. Edward Schrader was killed in action September, 1944. Howard Nordblum died of wounds received in the invasion of Luzon in the Philippines on January 19, 1945.” During WWII, in addition to those mentioned previously, the community also mourned the loss of two young men born and raised in the Village of Farnham: Salvatore Battaglia and Michael Graci. Although not members of the Holy Cross Church, they were members of the Farnham community and in recognition of their sacrifice for us, we felt it essential to mention their names. The Military photo shown today is from our John Walker collection. At this time, we do not have the names of those pictured. Perhaps some of our readers will be able to provide a name or two after careful review. In closing, we would be deeply remise if we did not mention that we are ever mindful and grateful for each of our Veterans who have willingly and ever so courageously served our country. It is because of the sacrifices of these brave men and women that each of us are able to enjoy our freedoms today. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

The National Guard training Camp, Farnham, N.Y.

In the archives of our historical society, particularly the John Walker collection of photos and memorabilia, we discovered this military newspaper clipping. We believe it was taken from a Buffalo, N.Y. newspaper as we have come across similar news photos in the past. The caption reads “COLOR GUARD OF THE 65TH REGIMENT EN ROUTE TO THE CAMP AT FARNHAM, N.Y.” We know from past research that the military troops came by the railroad and disembarked at the railway stations located in the village of Farnham. The troops would then march to the camp, which was situated on the shores of Lake Erie. In our historical society room we have on display a church service bulletin “ORDER OF SERVICE for the Headquarters 65th Regiment, N.G.N.Y. Camp Josiah Porter, near Farnham, N.Y.” The church service was held on Sunday Morning, August 1, 1909. (N.G. refers of course to National Guard). The bulletin was donated by a member of the Nordblum family. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

Alexis Browning, of Angola Participates in Canisius College's Virtual Service Week 2020

Alexis Browning was among several Canisius students who rolled up their sleeves to participate in the college's first-ever Virtual Service Week. Browning is from Angola, and is pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Organized by The New Buffalo Institute at Canisius, Virtual Service Week took place from October 19 - 23, 2020. Each day represented a different service theme: social justice, borders and migration, healthcare and health equity, environment and sustainability, and education. Students could chose to participate in one or more of the themed events, each of which offered various opportunities for them to engage in service, advocate for change, or to collaborate with or make a donation to a community partner. Film screenings and educational resources were also part of the week's activites and since the service was primarily virtual, students were asked to share their participation efforts via social media posts. The New Buffalo Institute (NBI) at Canisius College aligns research, service and educational programming toward the many neighborhoods on Buffalo's East Side, including its own Hamlin Park neighborhood. The NBI affirms its commitment to social justice, provides a welcoming place for community partners to convene, voice concerns and exchange ideas. Informed by our Catholic, Jesuit tradition, the NBI is committed to finding new ways to address the challenges confronting the neighborhoods of the East Side and to work in solidarity with all of our community partners.
