This photo is circa 1906 and was shared with us by the family when we were preparing our anniversary book celebrating Brant’s 175th year in 2014.

As mentioned in a recent article, our historical societies were each given a unique donation; a research project of James E. Greene devoted to rediscovering the Buffalo and Lake Erie Traction trolley line. His well-documented research encourages the idea of a “RAIL TO TRAIL” scenario; resurrecting the old trolley line into a useful recreational trail. In addition to detailing the once 93 mile trolley route, his booklet contains many then vs. now photographs. One of the primary resources for Jim’s research was a book by William R. Gorden titled“Buffalo and Lake Erie Traction Co.”.

Today’s photo is borrowed from Mr. Gorden’s book. It depicts a view of Main Street, Angola, looking North from the N.Y. Central railroad tracks. The photo date is 1909.

(110 years ago!) Today, as in the photograph, Shultz’ hardware store can be found on the same corner of Main, Lake and Commercial Streets (although it is a different building). At that time, the trolley traveled down Main Street and turned right near the area where Crosby’s store stands today. In 1912 the trolley station was built at School and Main Street. It was #21 on the route and was referred to as Clifton’s. From Clifton’s station, the trolley line would then head towards the Angola power house which was (and the building still is) located just before Sister’s Creek.

Once across the creek, that section of the trolley line continued en-route to Buffalo, N.Y. In his research, Jim notes that not all sections of the trolley route could become a recreational trail. However, he highlights the idea of opening the trail between Angola and Farnham and maybe as far as the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. And while we are brainstorming - why not a side trail headed towards and through the Evangola State Park? These are interesting historical related projects to consider!

State of New York CHALLENGERS’ CERTIFICATE of 1911

In a stack of old letters tied with a string, we came across an envelope addressed to Mr. Ellis Colvin, postmarked October 1911 from the Republican Committee of Buffalo, N.Y. It seems that Ellis H. Colvin was a candidate for Justice of Peace in the town of Brant. Inside the envelope was a “CHALLENGERS’ CERTIFICATE” issued by the State of New York. As it is so close to election time, we felt it may be of interest to some - even though it is not a photo. We have enlarged the center portion in hopes that it may be easier to review. The certificate reads as follows “Pursuant to Section 352 of the Election Laws of the State of New York “Ellis Colvin” is hereby appointed a CHALLENGER on the part of the REPUBLICAN PARTY, in and for the “Second” Election District of the Town of “Brant” in the County of Erie, at the General Election to be held on the 7th day of Novenber [sic], 1911. In testimony Whereof, Witness the signatures of the Chairman and secretary of the Republican General Committee. Signed by Henry Seilheimer, Secretary and William H. Daniel, Chairman”.

Ellis H. Colvin, lived his entire life in the town of Brant.

He was born in 1862; the seventh child of David and Lydia (Hammond) Colvin. Ellis’ dad David was born in Vermont and his mother Lydia was born in Brant, N.Y. His siblings were George, Elizabeth, Matilda, Imogene, Edward, Mary and Samuel. There were eight children in total, all born in Brant, N.Y. Ellis is also the uncle of Lynn Walters whose photographs we have shared with you from time to time.

Israel Colvin, grandfather of Ellis, had served in the War of 1812. Israel purchased the family farm in 1839. On the 1909 map of Brant, the farm is listed as the “Colvin Homestead” at the intersection of Brant-Farnham and Hammond Roads on lot #70. The 1909 Atlas of Erie County also provides the following description: “Mr. Ellis Colvin is one of the public spirited citizens of the town and is a member of the Town Board of Brant.”
