PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me where you are, my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer for your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consec utive days and then you must publish, and it will be granted to you. D. N.

The Angola Railroad Disaster - The rear car jumping from the track. (Sketched by J.P. Hoffman) for the HARPERS WEEKLY newspaper dated January 11, 1868

The Angola Horror Remembered Part I of III

150 years ago one of the world’s worst and deadly train accidents occurred just 1/2 mile away from the center of the Village of Angola. One week prior to Christmas, on December 18, 1867, the last two cars of the Lake Shore Railway elite express train derailed and fell off the forty foot high wooden trestle over the Big Sister Creek in Angola. The accident known as the Angola Horror with a death toll of fifty made headlines throughout the nation. Passengers on their way to New York City had mostly boarded in Cleveland, Ohio and were contained in four passenger cars constructed primarily of wood. As the train was leaving the bridge, the last two cars derailed. The last car fell to the frozen creek below while the car ahead luckily made it to the east side of the bridge, but then slid down the steep embankment. To be continued next week… Contributed by The Angola Horror Sesquicentennial Committee __________

The Weekly Word

www.fbbc.com

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you .” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 I am thankful …

For the taxes I pay because it means that I’m employed. For the mess to clean after a dinner because it means I have been surrounded by friends. For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat. For my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine. For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home. For all the complaining I hear about government because it means we have freedom of speech. For the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking. For my huge heating bill because it means I am warm. For the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means that I can hear. For the piles of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear. For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been productive. For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I am alive.

Shop, Eat, & Play Local!

Small businesses often are overlooked by customers who are enticed by larger companies, and this can adversely affect the local economy in more negative ways than might appear on the surface level. The rise of shopping malls and large chain stores such as Walmart and other retailers has caused irreversible damage to Main Street in the last half-century or so, and it’s paramount to remember the importance of supporting local small businesses. After all, why should we not celebrate the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship, as exemplified by small business owners who take the risk of following their dreams? After all, it’s a common thing for politicians to talk about supporting Main Street over big business, and how small business owners often face greater hardships than larger companies. Since Small Business Saturday is held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving Day, it falls right during the peak shopping periods of the year. History of Small Business Saturday The 1960s saw the rise of the American shopping mall, and the decades since have seen large chain retailers further cementing their position in terms of taking over the retail sphere and displacing smaller, family-run businesses. This model has spread further throughout the world, and chain retailers have been usurping small businesses’ market share worldwide in the last few decades. That being said, the difference is most stark in countries like the US, where small businesses have often been obliterated within a year or two of some large chain retailer coming to town and opening up shop – in India and much of Southeast Asia, shopping malls coexist with small shops largely because they serve different markets – as has been noted in the past, the corner shop is not going anywhere anytime soon in India because customers can purchase items on credit, and that’s just something that you’ll never be able to do in a Walmart or BigBazaar. In the United States, the context is different, though. Different economic realities combined with different cultural ideas about how small businesses operate has ultimately been more harmful to those businesses in developed countries than in developing economies. And with all of the odds stacked against them, small businesses in the US need a day in their honor. Small Business Saturday is a relatively recent phenomenon – the first one was in Roslindale Village, Massachusetts in 2010 as a counterpart to Black Friday (which features big box retailers, and its anti-consumerist counterpart, Buy Nothing Day targets big business). Small Business Saturday was originally sponsored by American Express and the non-profit National Trust for Historic Preservation. From the very start, the day has been promoted through advertising on both social media and more traditional means such as television and radio advertisement. Since 2013, Small Business Saturday has also existed in the UK following the success of its American counterpart. Celebrating Small Business Saturday You may be wondering how to celebrate Small Business Saturday since it is possible that you might have been lead to believe that small businesses are a thing of the past. That, however, is not true, and you can dispel such ignorance by observing Small Business Saturday. As a consumer, you can choose to spend your money at local small businesses on this day rather than going to the big box retailers at the local mall. After all, the best way to support small businesses is to go and spend money at them rather than somewhere else. You can also tell your friends to do the same, perhaps making a point of organizing a shopping day where you only visit small, local enterprises instead of chain stores. While you may or may not end up paying more, it’s important to remember that spending your money at a small business generally puts more money into the local economy than if you’re spending that money in a chain store.

St. Francis Cross Country Wins MMAA All Catholic Title

The St. Francis Cross Country team won its first All-Catholic Championship Since 1977 Sunday morning, October 5th at Knox Farms. The 40 year drought ended on cool soggy day, in some of the toughest conditions imaginable. After splitting the league title with St. Joes and Canisius, there would only be one winner at the All Catholic race, and the Red Raiders bested Canisius and Joes with a score of 40-54-56, with the rest of the field trailing behind in the triple digits. It was a decisive win, on a day when nothing was certain. Ankle deep water, foot devouring mud, and slippery trails slowed the race down a bit, but St. Francis remained focused and ran their best race of the season. Seniors Jake Lanning (3), Andrew Michalski (4), and Sam Attea (7) took home first team All Catholic honors. Newcomers Mike Spencer and Sean O’Meara showed the meaning of the word determination as they willed themselves ahead of the competition to finish the scoring. Jonathan Smith and Tim Maciejewski held down the final two spots and all seven of them will represent the league at the NY State Federation Championships at Bowdoin Park on November 18. This is the most focused, coachable, and determined group a coach could ask for. They overcame a lot of adversity, but when one guy went down, another stepped up. In the end it was truly a group effort. The JV team also had a nice day, while overmatched somewhat by St. Joes, they held a nice pack together, and ran tough as a team. Led by Junior Pat Henshaw; Matt Duggan, Owen Roberts, Mark Stuzman and John Emmerling scored for Frannies. Henshaw, Duggan and Roberts are all candidates for most improved runners this year. Emmerling and Stutzman are seniors, with no running background, coming out for the first time. Special thanks to them. St. Francis fielded the largest freshman squad in years with 7 runners. Matt Villardo came in 3rd overall, followed by Reilly Carney who was 9th. Liam Donovan, Andrew Sovinski, and Caleb Edbauer all scored with Ryan Baker less than a second behind in the 6th spot. Peter Sovinski rounded out the squad, and is already looking forward to next year. It was obviously a huge day for the St. Francis program, andthere are too many people to thank. One thing coaches Kiefer and Hoak want to acknowledge, in addition to the parents and administration, are the runners and parents who have come before this year. This was a multi-year process, and unfortunately, careers have a four year shelf life. ve the needs of our community. Contribtued by Saint Francis High School __________
