From The Old Photo Album

Ansel Smith, was one of the earliest settlers in the town of Brant. Arriving in the year of 1818, he purchased land and built a home on Lot 21 located on the Brant-North Collins Road between the Morley and Versailles Plank Roads. It has been duly recorded that the town of Brant’s first organizational meeting was held in his home in 1839. A N.Y. State Census documents that the following family members were living in the Ansel Smith residence in the year of 1855: Ansel, age 60, Farmer, born in Vermont, his wife Elizabeth (nee Brown), age 60, born in Washington, their son – Elon age 25, daughter in law - Caroline (nee Caskey) age 24, their two grandchildren - Gorham C. age 4 and Anna M. age 1, and their two daughters - Sarah Ann age 18 and Elisabeth age 15. The last six persons mentioned were all born in Erie County, N.Y. Twentytwo years later, the 1877 assessment book lists Ansel Smith as owning property in Lot 31 (40 acres, value $1,300) and in Lot 21 (25 acres, value $400). The total value of land and property amounted to $1,700 resulting in taxes of $9.97. Ansel Smith died on July 10th, 1880 and his wife Elizabeth on October 24, 1870. Both are buried in the Brant Cemetery on Brant-North Collins Rd. An 1880 map of Brant lists Elon Smith as owner of this property. Elon is also recorded as owner in the 1897 town of Brant assessment rolls. The grandson and granddaughter of Ansel and Elizabeth Smith were interviewed in 1939 for the 100 year anniversary of the town of Brant. Mr. Morris A. Smith was 76 and living in North Collins and his sister Mrs. Anna M. Smith Haberer at 85 years of age also living in North Collins. Both recollected that farming was the main occupation of the early settlers of Brant, which included vegetable, grain and fruit crops as well as dairy cattle. It was in the early 1900’s, that the Ansel Smith/Elon Smith residence became the home of Joseph F. Catalano and family and today it is owned by the Catalano family descendants. Pioneer Camp Veterans Park Dedication

Pioneer Camp gave back to the community by dedicating a newly renovated pavilion to all Veterans, First Responders and their families. It was built in partnership with the UAW, Home Depot and Geico. The park includes a large picnic pavilion with tables, donated by the Boys Scouts, an outdoor kitchen, monuments, a memorial fire pit and more. The Dedication was October 27th. Alex Knowles, Executive Director thanked everyone for coming, including representative from various fire companies, VFW Posts and folks from the partnership. A special recognition went out to Steve Raczka, Director of Operations and his crew along with the many volunteers who helped make the Veterans Park Pavilion a success. Afterwards, Kali Fyock, Event Planner offered the many attendees a delicious meal prepared by Chef Chris Baratta. A great time was had by all. Contributed by Pia Doro ___________

Town of Evans to Receive Grant from New York State for Water Infrastructure Improvements

Last week, Governor Cuomo announced that the Town of Evans will receive $2.9 million in funding for improvements to its water infrastructure and new water tower. The award is the result of New York's highly successful Water Infrastructure Improvement Act program. The Town of Evans plans to build a 1.5 million gallon water storage tank along with a pump station to boost pressures in the higher elevations in Evans, predominantly east of the Village of Angola. The. town is also looking to install 2 new pressure reducing vaults to replace an older unit in the northeastern quadrant of town. This is required to allow development to occur as the town is currently under a development moratorium. "This grant will help our community address public safety issues, allow economic growth and support the building trades in our area," stated Evans Supervisor Mary K. Hosler. "I cannot express how grateful I am to the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation and Governor Cuomo, for their commitment to clean drinking water and even happier that our Town's grant request has been awarded the funding of $2.9M." "Investing in our state's water infrastructure is critical to regional growth and prosperity and maintaining safe, healthy communities," Governor Andrew Cuomo said. "By improving our water infrastructure, we are protecting our natural resources, laying the groundwork for future prosperity and helping to create a stronger, healthier, New York for all." The Governor's Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017 dedicated $2.5 billion for water quality protection across New York. Today's announcement is part of a statewide total of $270 million in grants being awarded to communities. To date, $750 million in Water Infrastructure Improvement Act and Inter-municipal Grant funding supports nearly $2.65 billion in total project costs for vital drinking and wastewater infrastructure projects statewide. Combined with zeroor low-interest financings through the State Environmental Facilities Corporation, New York taxpayers will save nearly $1.8 billion. Furthermore, these projects are expected to support more than 47,000 jobs in the construction, supplier and service sectors. New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation President and CEO Sabrina Ty said, "Under Governor Cuomo, New York State is leading the nation in water infrastructure investment. The environmental Facilities Corporation is proud to be able to provide significant funding to communities in need. We're helping to secure a critically important resource for both current and future New Yorkers." Contributed by Supervisor Mary K. Hosler __________

NOVENA TO ST. JUDE May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, loved and preserved throughout the world, now and forever. Oh Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, Worker of Miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, Helper of the Hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day. By the 8th day your prayer will be answered. Publication must be promised. Thanks to St. Jude for prayers answered.

A note on the back of the photo reads: “Factory worker’s homes of Erie Preserving Co., Fenton, N.Y. – Milestrip Road”

From the Old Photo Album

Listed in the 1895 Business Directory we find reference of a late 1800’s Brant community referred to as “Fenton”. At that time, the Fenton neighborhood was located on the Milestrip Road in the town of Brant and the residents were canning factory workers who were employed by the Erie Preserving Company and their families. It was the Fenton family who “FENTON” as found in the had founded the Erie 1895 Business Directory Preserving Company in 1873, so it was natural that the small community would bear the family name. The first people employed in the factory were the local settlers and French immigrants, many of whom came purposely to work for the Erie Preserving Company. Hemlock shack homes about sixteen feet square were erected for many of the French laborers. The Erie County Independent Volume XVIII Number 42 dated August 18, 1893 published an article entitled: “BRANT ERIE PRESERVING COMPANY, PROSPEROUS PEOPLE ECT.” The article explained: “This company has a regular village with streets, dwellings ect., and a colony of about 300, mostly Italians …” Two years later, the 1895 business directory provides the following information: “FENTON - In the town of Brant, 28 miles southwest of Buffalo. Farnham is the nearest shipping station. Population 100. Daily mail. J. Russell, postmaster.” Some residents, businesses and their principle livelihood are included in this same directory: “James Brifton* (Fruit and Poultry), A.M. Brown (Farmer), M.J. Brown (mngr. Erie Preserving Co.), Wm. Chaplin (Commissioner of highways), George Coon (Farmer), Erie Preserving Co. (Fruit), Risley Evans (Farmer), E. G. Fenton (Fruit), George Martin (Farmer), Jonathan Russell (Farmer), Charles Sisson (Farmer) and John Sisson (Farmer)”. The Fenton post office was in operation until 1909 or 1910. After the canning factory closed, some of the cozy homes that once housed the factory workers and their families were sold and moved to various locations within the town of Brant. Many of these houses, after some remodeling and additions, are today the homes of some of our residents. You will find a few of these petite homes on the Milestrip and Brant-Reservation Roads. The land that at one time housed the Fenton Community and Erie Preserving Company is now owned and farmed by Mike and Kellie Chiavetta and family. [*Information gathered in later years determined that this name should be spelled as “Bufton”.] Contributed by the Brant-Farnham __________ Historical Society

Brendan Voss Reenlists for Continued Service in New York Army National Guard

Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the State National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard. Staff Sergeant Brandan Voss from Lake View, N.Y. has reenlisted to continue service with the 105th Military Police Company. "It's great to see Soldiers staying in the Army and continuing to serve their State and Nation in the New York Army National Guard," Shields said. "The most important Army asset we have is the individual Soldier. The dedication, skills, and leadership traits they bring to our community and their employers are invaluable." "By choosing to stay in the Army National Guard they directly contribute to our nation's security and to the governor's ability to respond to disasters, all while building a bright future for their family through the Guard's retirement, education, and health insurance programs," Shields said.
