ANGOLA PARK & GAZEBO COMMITTEE Christmas Carols & Brass Choir Due to COVID rules as to the size of groups and social distancing there will be no Christmas Caroling Program at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park this year. Committee members have recently decorated the Gazebo for Christmas. The DPW decorates the Village Christmas tree on the lawn between the Village Commons and the Angola Public Library. There will be no formal program at the Village Christmas tree this year.

Erie County Legislator John Mills is encouraging businesses and residents throughout Erie County to sign up for the new Shop 716 initiative as part of the Back to Business program. Established by Erie County and 43 North, the goal of the Back to Business program is to provide relief to the small business community that is struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This recently-announced program would match gift cards up to 25 dollars for people shopping at a list of participating local businesses. The matched gift cards will be funded through $300,000 in CARES Act funding. There is no fee to any business owner who joins the list of participating businesses, and the forms to get on the list or purchase a gift card can be accessed at https://amherst.org/shop716/. Legislator Mills said, “Our local business community needs support now more than ever. I strongly encourage you to purchase a gift card to be spent at the list of participating shops. In the meantime, I hope many of the great businesses in Erie County sign up to take part in this program. In the 1959 DEWITTS TOWN DIRECTORY OF BRANT AND NORTH COLLINS we found the following entry: “Don-Cliff Greenhouses, (Donald and Mrs. Donald Mayers) ns of Cain Road, lw of Versailles Plank Rd. NC RD2 NC3377”. A few years back, Diane (Mayers) Hauck shared some photos with us of a greenhouse business once owned by her family. It was located on Cain Road in the town of Brant, N.Y., very near to the section of Cain Road which borders four separate towns: Evans, Eden, Brant and North Collins. Diane’s father Donald A. Mayers, owned the greenhouses on Cain Road with her grandfather who was Clifford Mayers - thus the name “Don-Cliff Greenhouses”. Diane’s grandfather is shown in one photo and another photo includes Diane’s sister, Carol (MayersOgnan). The family moved from the farm and greenhouses in 1962 or 1963. Project Keep Evans Warm & Fed The current pandemic has affected many Americans including some residing in our own Town. Loss of jobs and income, loss of housing and even loss of life are all by-products of this horrible sickness. As a result, Most Precious Blood Church’s yearly warm clothing drive Project Keep Evans Warm will include a food and paper drive. The goal of this effort will be to assist Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) to meet the increasing demand. All collections will be turned over to OGN for distribution to families in need and residing in the Town of Evans free of charge. For warm clothing we will accept winter coats, gloves, boots and hats in all sizes, colors and styles. Children’s sizes are very popular. We ask that any clothing donated be clean. For food we will accept dry and canned with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Baby food is in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper so these will be collected also. This is the Project’s 7th year and each year requests for assistance far exceeds what can be collected. This year the pandemic will certainly make matters challenging. This can easily be a community effort and we encourage all work places, churches, volunteer fire departments and schools to participate and directly work with OGN or you can call 481-4480 or 507-6703 to arrange for pick-up of any items donated. Snow on Main Street, Angola, N.Y., March 18, 1936

The following introductory words may ring familiar as we had opened an earlier article this year with the same, however the photo today provides us with a different view of a snow covered Main Street, Angola, N.Y. Within the covers of the village of Angola’s 1873-1973 centennial history book, Mrs. Joan Houston wrote that “recordbreaking snowstorms occurred in both 1930 and 1936”. This March 18,1936 sidewalk view of Angola’s Main Street confirms that there was indeed plenty of snow! In the photo, “RICE’S DINER” has a sign across the front that reads “DINING ROOM SERVICE”. To the left of the diner a sign ”E.J. SCHLENDER, INSURANCE” is mounted on the building. Behind the happy trio, we can get a slight glimpse of the Angola Movie Theater and the First Congregational Church. (Note this is the old church - before the fire.) Sadly, as of this date, we do not recognize any of the three persons in the photo. We happened across this picture while having breakfast at Dawn’s Restaurant on Main Street, in the village of Angola a few weeks back. Within this quaint and cozy restaurant there are plenty of historical photos of Angola and Evans adorning the walls. The photos and memorabilia were donated by lifelong town of Evans resident - Nino LaRusso. Lucky for us, Nino, happened to be there that particular morning and he was pleased to chat with us and show us the collection! (And Dawn was kind enough to let us borrow a few photos to scan and share with you.) Just a day later, we saw Keith Young, historian for the town of Evans. He explained that an old trolley car was actually used as the “building” for “Rice’s Diner”. It was situated between where the bakery is today and the old “Variety Store” (which by the way – that variety store was packed with everything imaginable)! Next time you are on Main Street, take a look and you can see that the “Frosted Fairytale Bake Shop” does have an “add on” to the left side of the building and we think you would agree that prior to this extra addition, there was definitely enough room to fit a trolley car in between the two buildings.
