Project: Keep Evans Warm The Most Precious Blood Church in Angola is collecting used outer winter clothing for distribution to families in need and residing in the Town of Evans. All collections will be turned over to Operation Good Neighbor in North Evans for disbursement free of charge. Each year the requests for warm clothing far exceeds what can be collected. Ralph E. Zook

Ralph E. Zook entered into rest on November 21, 2017 at Homewood in Martinsburg, Pa. He was born in Windbur, Pa.,son of the late W. Paul and Myrtle E.(Weaver) Zook. He married Dorothy Lee Miller on March 24, 1951 at Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg. Surviving are his beloved wife of 66 years, a daughter Cathy L. Truskowski (Dan) of Hamburg, N.Y., son Thomas E. Zook (Betsy) of Casper, Wyoming, daughter Brenda M. Malczewski (Don) of Sunset Bay, N.Y., and son Brian P. Zook (Laura) of Casper, Wyoming. 9 grandchildren : Daniel, Jamie, Kristen, Nathan, Rebecca, Brandon, Clareesa, Sam and Joey. 3 great-grandchildren : Logan, Shelby and Danny. 2 brothers : Dale E.(Ann) of Roaring Spring, Leon R. (Janet) of Hollidaysburg; and 2 sisters : Esther M. Teeter of Pleasant Gap, Pa. and Carolyn J. Zook of Rochester, NY. and many wonderful nephews and nieces! He was preceded in death by 4 brothers : Gerald L., Ray E., Richard P., and Lloyd C. Ralph was a 1950 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg. In 1955, he moved his family to Western N.Y. to work at the Ford Stamping Plant. He retired from there in 1988 after 33 years of service. In 1992, he and Dorothy moved to Casper, Wyoming to be close to their sons and grandchildren. After 22 years of living the western life, they decided to go back home to Martinsburg where their whole life began. They certainly made a full circle. Ralph was a born athlete. He excelled in any form of competition. He enjoyed pitching baseball in Highschool, and later played softball, bowling, basketball, billiards, golfing, hunting, fishing, and card playing. Ralph sang bass in every church they attended. ___________

The Angola Horror Remembered Part III of III

This week we complete our narrative about one of the world’s worst and deadly train accidents, which occurred just 1/2 mile away from the center of the Village of Angola. The accident known as the Angola Horror made headlines throughout the nation. This tragedy occurred one hundred-fifty years ago - one week prior to Christmas, just as the Lake Shore Railway elite express train headed for New York City, was leaving the forty foot high wooden trestle bridge over the Big Sister Creek.

Ordinary passengers of the unharmed lead cars and local residents of Angola became instant heroes as they immediately responded to the cries of the many doomed victims that afternoon of December 18th, 1867. Of the two derailed train cars, it was the passengers of the last train car that fared the worst. This last car fell forty feet, crashing to the frozen creek below. Soon after impact at the bottom of the ravine, the wooden car ignited from glowing coals spilled from the stove and the fire was quickly spread by the kerosene from overturned lamps. Screaming passengers had to be heroically pulled from the burning car. Those who survived the flames had to be carried to safety - to a make shift emergency hospital or nearby residences. Days later the death toll reached fifty dead, of which seventeen bodies were burned beyond recognition. Those bodies were transported to Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y. and placed in a mass grave. (One hundred and forty nine years later, in 2016, a headstone was placed at that site.)

An investigation concluded that the accident was caused by a bent wheel on a compromised axle, striking a metal plate portion of the rail that resulted in the derailment. In those days there were two standards that set the spacing between the inside dimensions of the rails. The most common dimension being 4 foot 8½ inches and the other 4 foot 10 inches. In order for one car to be used on both systems, it was necessary to allow for differences in spacing by having the cylindrical tire position of the wheel wider. If something wasn’t correct the car was in danger of derailing.

From the ashes of this tragedy new regulations aimed at improving passenger safety were enacted. As a result, rail gauge was standardized to one dimension, heating of cars was made safer, wooden construction of passenger cars was phased out and the need for improving brakes were main points of the new regulations.

Southtowns Catholic School Inducts National Junior Honor

SCS inducted Grade 7 Students into The National Junior Honor Society at a special Mass on Friday, October 27th. The kids met the requirements that The NJHS established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since it’s beginning in 1929.

Lake Shore Flying Eagles Visit El Buen Amigo

Students from the Lake Shore Senior High School Flying Eagles Club went to the Latin American Culture Association at El Buen Amigo, a fair-trade store in the Allentown neighborhood of Buffalo, NY, to experience Latino culture. Students learned to dance the salsa, had an authentic meal from Puerto Rico, made jewelry, and participated in a team-building activity.

Students also learned about equality in a free-trade economy and how purchasing free-trade goods helps those living in other countries.
