St. Nicholas Visits Southtowns Catholic School

On Monday, December 9th, Southtowns Catholic School celebrated St. Nicholas Day with a visit to each classroom by from the legendary saint. The students made shoes and left them lining the halls so that a candy cane could be dropped in each one. Stories about St. Nicholas later become part of the inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus. December 6th is Saint Nicholas Day but they did not have school. From the Old Photo Album Phyllis Notaro – Bowling Hall of Famer

Phyllis Notaro, Bowling Hall of Famer and daughter of the late Margaret and John Notaro, was born and lived most of her entire life at the family farm on the Brant-Angola Road, Brant, N.Y. She only recently moved to Orchard Park, N.Y. Phyllis’ bowling career began in her family owned bowling alley on Main Street, Angola, N.Y. , which was at one time known as the Old Ford Lanes. She later joined a Buffalo Bowling League and in 1959 became a Phyllis Notaro professional bowler. Winning the 1961 All Star Tournament at San Bernardino, California (now known as the U.S. Open), Phyllis achieved the highest average in the nation during that same year - 201! Participating in all 8 World’s Invitation Match Game Tournaments, she was 5 times a finalist; being a runner up in the 1st tournament held in 1957. She bowled a perfect 300 game in tournament play in 1963. She holds 25 City Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., 13 NYS titles and 3 National Championships. She is enshrined in 3 Bowling Halls of Fame: the Women’s International Bowling Congress (1979), The Buffalo Women’s Bowling Association (1982) and the New York State Women’s Association (1986). On October 6, 1993 she was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. As a member of the Brunswick Staff of Champions and later with AMF, Phyllis traveled to most major cities giving exhibitions and instructions. To celebrate her 1979 induction to the Women’s Hall of Fame, friends and neighbors in the town of Brant honored Phyllis with a TESTIMONAL DINNER held at the Brant Town Hall on January 27, 1979. In 1993, the Brant-Farnham Historical Society’s Erie County Fair exhibit highlighted the accomplishments of our native born celebrity – Pro-Bowler Phyllis Notaro. The Old Clark Homestead, Brant, N.Y. circa 1898 or 1900

The Clark homestead was (and still is) located at the “dip” on Brant-North Collins Road, near the Brant Cemetery. Pictured are: Mary Louise Clark (seated) and granddaughter Edna Henry. Morgan Lewis Clark (seated) and granddaughter Florence Henry. To the far right standing is son Dorr Charles Clark and “Old Bill” the horse. Morgan Lewis Clark was born in Illinois in the year 1845 to Charles Smith Clark and Laura Butts Clark. In 1861, Morgan (age 16) and his father Charles (age 43) fought together in the Civil War (Company D, 8th Illinois Calvary, 1861 - 1865). Soon after the war Morgan Clark moved North, met Mary L. Butts and they were married. They had four children; three girls and one boy. The boy (Dorr) was the youngest and was born in 1876. Dorr Charles Clark was born and raised in Brant and it was there that he met his wife Emma Elizabeth Tucker. They were married in 1900 and had three children; Leslie B. Clark, born 1901, Alice O. Clark, born 1903 and Alford E. Clark, born 1913. Alice married Alfred Frederick Borngraber in the year 1924 and together they raised their family of three girls and one boy on the Borngraber family farm, which was (and still is) located on Brant-Farnham Road in the town of Brant. This homestead is still owned by the Borngraber family. Morgan Lewis Clark was the great-grandfather of Jean (Borngraber/Rubeck) Brunelli, Verna (Borngraber) Ditcher, Joyce (Borngraber) Cullen and Clark H. Borngraber. Our photo today was donated to the historical society by Donna Borngraber; wife of Clark H. Family history information was written by Alice O. Clark Borngraber and Rebecca Borngraber for our Brant Sesquicentennial history book in the year of 1989. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

The old “Field Stand Inn” Stage Coach Stop (photo is circa 1939)

In the town of Brant, at the intersection where BrantNorth Collins Road meets Versailles Plank Road, there was a historical marker that read as follows: “OLD FIELD STAND INN”. “Building was burned before completion. Finally completed by Nelson Field as the first stage coach stop in Brant. It had a blacksmith shop, hotel and coach barns for travelers between Buffalo and Salamanca.” The marker was removed more than a few years ago and is currently stored in the Brant town highway barn, however, the historical inscription still holds true. The white building we see today on this corner, was once the Old Field Stand Inn. In addition to the information on the marker inscription, from the 1939 CENTENNIAL BOOK OF THE TOWN OF BRANT we also learn that: “About seventy years ago [1869] the Part of the barn at “Field Stand Inn”- old stage coach line from where the horses were once kept (photo Gowanda to Buffalo was is circa 1939) discontinued. This stage coach route followed the Old Plank Road. There was a toll gate just North of Pontiac and the famous “Field Stand Inn” was a much used inn on this stage line. At this inn the drivers refreshed themselves and changed horses. The stage was a vehicle drawn by two horses.” We should mention that Pontiac was and is a small hamlet located in our neighboring town of Evans. The Old Plank Road is today referred to as Versailles Plank Road or Versailles Road and the Old Field Stand Inn is currently a private residence.
