Albert Bruno Damerau

Albert Bruno Damerau, 83, of Angola, passed away suddenly on Friday, December 8, 2017. He was born in Barker, New York to Fredrick and Berta Damerau. They moved to Angola shortly after he was born, where he resided the rest of his life. Albert was a hard working and fun loving man who loved traveling, boats, flying airplanes, playing the piano, and riding motorcycles. He was a dreamer, and an optimist, and he loved his family and friends.

Albert, along with his devoted wife, Margaret, owned and operated A & M Contracting, which planned and developed real estate and other construction related projects.

His legacy in the community was the development of the Beverly Heights Subdivision in the Village of Angola. He served in the Air Force, was a past president of the Evans Chamber of Commerce, Realtor for Century 21, a proud member of the Shriners and Mini Car Unit, and was active with the American Legion. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret and his four children, Corinne DamerauBest and husband, Randy, David Damerau, Robert Damerau and his wife, Julie, and Mark Damerau. He has four grandchildren. Services were held at Latimore-Schiavone Funeral Home followed by a Mass at Most Precious Blood Church. ___________

He was employed at Moog Inc. in East Aurora, NY for 35 years, served in the US Army from 1964-1966 and is a present member of VFW Post 5798 in Angola. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball, was an avid hobby golfer and passionate gardener. Dennis could often be found in his garden on August mornings with no shirt on, a salt shaker in one hand and a ripe tomato in the other. Family received friends at the Addison Funeral Home Inc. and a Mass of Christian Burial was held at Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, NY. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Silver Creek, NY ___________

Anniversary of the train wreck

in the Village of Angola, which has become known as the “Angola Horror.” The last two passenger cars on the Buffalo and Erie Railroad’s eastbound New York Express derailed as they approached the bridge at Big Sister Creek and fell into the gorge. One car burst into flames immediately. The other car was smashed. About 50 people died that day. This was one of the worst train wrecks in American history.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Jordyn

Cowell and Lucas Wehrfritz as October’s Members of the Month (MOTM).

Each month, club staff choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at our club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM participate in a variety of the programs offered at the club such as sports and games, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn (HYLA), Outdoor Club, Book Club, Smart Moves, along with many others.

Jordyn Cowell is currently a 3rd grader at A.J. Schmidt Elementary. Her favorite subject in school is Art and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Scholl.

When she’s at The Boys and Girls Club, her favorite activity is coloring.

Her favorite staff member here is Miss Madison. Outside of the Club, her favorite thing to do gymnastics. Jordyn’s favorite book is “Molly’s Story” and she wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Jordyn’s role model is another club member, Caprina Pecori.

Lucas Wehrfritz is currently a 3rd grader at A.J. Schmidt Elementary.

At school, Lucas’s favorite class is Art and his favorite teacher is Mr. Ruffino. While at The Boys and Girls Club, his favorite activity is playing in the games room and his favorite staff member is Miss Kaylea. When he’s home, Lucas loves to build with legos. He said that his favorite thing to read is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and his role model is his Dad. When Lucas grows up, he wants to be a business owner.

Next up we have our Student and HYLA Points Leader (High Yield Learning Activity) of the Month. Our Student of the Month is Emily Poulson. Emily is an elementary student in 5th grade at J.T. Waugh. Her favorite subject is Science and her favorite teacher is Mr. Hornberger. Her favorite thing to do at the Club is doing melty beads in the arts and crafts room, with Miss Mickey. She can’t pick from all the wonderful staff as just one favorite. When outside of The Club, she enjoys playing sports. Emily’s favorite band is Imagine Dragons and her favorite book is “Esperanza Rising”. Her role model is her Nanny and when she grows up, she wants to become a veterinarian. Our HYLA Points Leader is Peyton DeLair. HYLA points are earned by reading at The Club, practicing your instrument, and a ton of different learning type games within The Club, participation = points. Peyton is a 6th grader at Lake Shore Middle School. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Cislo and his favorite subject is Math. While at the club, Peyton enjoys arts and crafts with the talented Miss Mickey, when he’s not at the club, he enjoys playing with legos. His favorite book is “Chasing Herobrine” and likes the band Skillet, who are also his role models. When Peyton grows up, he wants to work at the Boys and Girls Club!

Last is our Artist and our Athlete of the Month. Jaylene Baron was named Artist of the Month. She is a 5th grader at A.J. Schmidt Elementary. Her favorite subject is Math and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Wunder.

Jaylene’s favorite staff member is Miss Madison and she enjoys doing arts and crafts at the club. When she’s not at The Club, she enjoys reading and her favorite song is “There’s nothing holding me back”. Her role models are Miss Emily, Miss Madison, and Miss Mickey (all club staff) and she would like to be an art teacher when she grows up. October’s Athlete of the Month is Caprina Pecori. Caprina is a 3rd grader at A.J. Schmidt Elementary. Her favorite subject is Math and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Scholl. While she’s at the club her favorite activity is flag football and she loves all the staff here. When Caprina is not at the club, she likes to play outside. Her favorite author is Jeff Kinney and her favorite singer is Kelsea Ballerini. Her cousin Amelia is her role model and when she grows up, she wants to be a scientist.

2017 Fall Clothing Drive at St. Francis High School

From November 6-17, Campus Ministry sponsored its annual Clothing Drive. This year, donations benefitted the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Buffalo. Over the nine school days of the Drive, SFHS collected over 500 bags of clothing! This year’s was the most successful Clothing Drive to-date, thanks to the generosity of our students, faculty and staff, parents and alumni, and in a particular way the efforts of the members of Alverna.

The truck from St. Vincent’s came to campus Monday to pick-up the clothing. A second return trip was necessary to gather all of the donations!

Southtowns Catholic School Celebrates Veterans Day

On Thursday, November 9th, Southtowns Catholic School welcomed Newell-Faulkner American Legion Post 880. The Honor Guard stood in front of the school as all of the kids stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mr. Dick Casseri played the official hymn for each branch on his saxophone as each child stood if they had a family member in that branch. After, the students joined the Honor Guard outside for a 21 Gun Salute and the singing of The National Anthem. The school invites family Veterans every year to celebrate Veterans Day, have lunch their student. Mrs. Jennifer Hill's Grade 2 class invited the veterans back to her classroom to interview them. Gowanda Electronics a local manufacturer of magnetic components is seeking an individual who is team oriented and highly motivated to join its Quality Assurance team. The desired candidate needs to be detailed oriented & willing to work with miniaturized parts and the ability to work under magnification (microscopes) for extended periods of time. Must be able to read & follow directions outlined in product ATP & QTP’s and have a good understanding of using measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, pin gages etc. In addition the individual would need to able to effectively communicate with all levels of management, work well within a team environment with minimal supervision and to work overtime as required. The preferred candidate would have to have excellent attendance, be well organized, keep accurate and neat records and be able to document measurements & interpret test data results.

College or Technical School a plus with an understanding of basic electricity is a plus. Previous on-the job experience in a test lab or related field and exposure to AS9100/ISO9001 Quality Systems is a plus. Computer skills such as MS Excel, MS Access & MS Word is needed.

Evans Senior Center Offering Diverse Workshops

The Evans Senior Center is incorporating a lot of diverse workshops , such as the new partnership with New York State Parks programs. These programs are providing information right from our own Evangola State Park which is a 733- acre park in Southern Erie County , New York . The park is located west of the village of Farnham, at the border of the Town of Brant and Town of Evans, which was a no brainer for the Director of the center to contact the Parks and arrange several different presentations , adventures with Park employees as guides on the property . So far the information that is being provided at the workshops are so useful, informative and just darn right very interesting and all at our back door here in Angola. Director Veronica Sullivan arranged an outing with the Parks guides for several of members of the Senior Center for the Citizen Nature Walk , the feedback from the members was that it was refreshing to see and be explained to the surroundings of nature that we unfortunately don’t take advantage enough. These opportunities that are being offered at the center are the proof that the center is continuing to move forward in the direction to provide the seniors of the Town of Evans avenues of diverse topics of interest.

Hannah C. Cooper of Angola took part in an internship in fall 2017 through SUNY Oswego's Center for Experiential Learning. A senior majoring in biology, Cooper interned with Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.

The Center for Experiential Learning at Oswego places students in internships and career awareness opportunities that allow them to earn college credits while garnering valuable life experience.
