Veteran’s Day Gathering in Farnham, N.Y.
From all of us at
Chiavetta’s Potatoes & Greenhouse
The Village of Farnham honored all Veterans on Veteran’s Day, November 11th, 2022 at the 11th morning hour. Despite the wet and rainy day, ceremonies were held at the Steven J. Rauker / Veterans Memorial Park under the pavilions. Over 35 Farnham and Brant residents, all the village Trustees and members of the Farnham Volunteer Fire Department gathered for the ceremony. Farnham Mayor Jere Hoisington opened the ceremonies and once all were welcomed, Deacon Lynn Whitworth of Holy Cross Lutheran Church provided the opening prayer. Following prayer, our harmonic voices proudly sang along with the sound system to our National Anthem - “The Star-Spangled Banner”. We started out quietly, but then gathered momentum and strength as the song progressed (well - except for the high notes – but hey - we gave it our best!). In addition to being the host of ceremonies, Jere was also the featured speaker for the services. He provided an inspiring message as to the countless reasons why it is so important to take time, to gather, honor and recognize our Veterans. He noted that this designated day is “a holiday” for some, even though they are not Veterans and yet some Veterans have to work on this day! It is a small sacrifice on our part to take time out of this one day if we are able, as we owe our Veterans so very much.
Throughout the service, patriotic music was provided by Lynda Ostrowski via sound system – which included one of our favorites “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood. Deacon Lynn offered a closing prayer-Benediction, but not before we all recited the “Our Father” as one voice under her prayerful guidance. In honor of the six branches of service, six flags were later placed at the Veteran’s Monument by our Veterans and their families. Refreshments were offered at Holy Cross Lutheran Church following the ceremony. Village of Farnham/Town of Brant Veterans in attendance at the ceremony were: Dennis Rubeck, David Berns, Mike Graci and Cordaro Amaya.

Lake Shore Senior Selected for All State and All Eastern
Lake Shore Senior Joshua Merritt has been selected for two prestigious Honors Music Ensembles:
The All State Symphonic Band (New York) and The All Eastern Band (Eastern USA). Josh is a very talented student musician (French horn) who studies under the direction of High School Band Director Eric Blodgett.
Following many years of hard work and a set of auditions starting last spring, Joshua was selected to perform at the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Conference in December as one of the most talented student musicians in New York State. After four days of rehearsals and other music experiences at the conference in Rochester, Joshua performed at a concert featuring the All State students at the Eastman Theater.
Josh also was accepted into the Area All State Band as a top student musician in all of Western New York. However, due to the recent storm, that festival was cancelled.
In addition to his acceptance into All State, Joshua auditioned for and was accepted as one of the top student musicians in the country and will participate in and perform at the All Eastern Music Conference April 10-12, also in Rochester. This Conference will feature some of the best student musician talent from the northern and mideastern U.S., from Maine to Maryland.
Joshua also performs with Buffalo’s premiere student orchestra, the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra. While juggling a school schedule filled with AP and honors classes, this National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society high-achieving senior is also traveling and auditioning for several prestigious music conservatories and hopes to realize his dream of becoming a professional horn player in a major Symphony Orchestra.
Joshua enjoys incredible support from his family: Mother – Tracy Swyers, Brother – Ryan Merritt, Grandfather –Gifford Swyers, and Grandmother – Susan Swyers.

Lake Shore Central Schools proudly recognizes our musicians selected to participate in the 2022 NYS School Music Association's Junior High Area All-State Band and Choruses. "These students were selected to perform based on auditions they did in the spring," says Middle School music teacher Jennifer Kenny. After a day and a half of intense rehearsals at Akron High School, the weekend concluded with some incredible performances."
Project: Keep Evans Warm & Fed
It’s that time of year again when the days get shorter, the cold air returns and the holidays are fast approaching. In an effort to assist and support those in need and residing in the Town of Evans, Most Precious Blood Church along with Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) will be conducting Project: Keep Evans Warm and Fed. Assisting with this project are our friends at the First Church of Evans who have already offered to collect winter clothing. The starting date for this project is November 1 and it will end December 18. Collected will be winter clothing, non-perishable foods and paper goods. We will accept winter coats, gloves, boots and hats in all sizes, colors and styles. Children’s sizes are very popular. We only ask that anything donated be clean. Food must be within shelf life and we will accept dry and canned goods with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Baby food is in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels disposable diapers and toilet paper so these will be collected also. Call 481-4480 or 507-6703 to arrange for pick-up of any donations. Leave a message if no answer.

Evans Historical Society’s October Speaker; Mike Stock
The Evans Historical Society held their monthly Speaker Program on October 24th, 2022, at the School House Museum on Erie Road. Invited to participate that evening was Speaker/Author and Veteran Mike Stock with his presentation entitled “Flying Helicopter Gunships in Vietnam”.
Mike, although no longer living in New York State, is a “local boy” who grew up in Evans, and lived with his parents and siblings on Bennett Road. His dad and mom are Sam A. and Alyce M. Stock. That evening we learned that he had attended the Evans School #2 (now the museum) as a young lad in elementary school!
(L-R) are brothers Bill, David, and Mike Stock. Mike was the guest speaker at the Evans Historical School House Museum this past October.
All seats were filled at the Evan’s Historical Museum that evening for Mike’s presentation. Also attending the program were Mike’s three brothers: Bill, David, and John Stock. Mike shared plenty of photographs and held our attention with his amazing pilot stories; some of which made us laugh, while others kept us keenly aware of the dangers of being a Career Navy and Vietnam Combat Pilot. His program was absolutely riveting! Mike had made special mention that his brother Bill is also a Veteran, serving our Country in the Vietnam War.
Copies of Mike’s book “Chasing the Four Winds” were available for purchase following his presentation. He was pleased to autograph the books for those who wished him to do so. This very informative book – over 500 pages of interesting reading - is packed with stories, photos and provides an excellent view of his career which spanned 45 years and during which he logged 15,319 Flight hours. The society was honored that our hometown boy came “back home” to share his experiences with us all.

Introducing A.J. Schmidt’s Kind Kid... Gio!
Giovanni Gossling, known as Gio by his friends, is A.J. Schmidt’s Kind Kid of the Month for December. Many teachers and students have benefited from Gio’s kind nature. He loves to say “hello” and smile when he sees others in the hallway. As a matter of fact, Gio recently earned a “Shout Out” for saying good morning and making Mrs. Karpinki’s day special.
Gio says he enjoys being kind because it feels good and he likes when others are kind back to him. He says he learned kindness from his Grandma, who also happens to make the best macaroni and cheese. Gio thinks teachers and learning are two of the best parts of being at A.J. Schmidt Elementary. His favorite part of his school day is going to PE. When he grows up, Gio wants to become a police officer. A great choice for someone who likes to help others!
