BRAMHAM PARISH COUNCIL - speeding issues in the village MONDAY EVENING, 30th NOVEMBER at 07.30pm VIRTUAL MEETING USING THE ZOOM PLATFORM As a direct result of a village resident (at the October Council meeting) making an impassioned speech about “speeding violations” within the village and another “car parking matters” Bramham Parish Council is in the process of setting up a “working group” to address “traffic management issues”, speeding being a major priority. The outcome of the group will be to offer advice and proportionate practical solutions for Council to consider. We are inviting any concerned/interested residents to join with us on Monday 30th November at 7.30pm in an open and informal gathering (Zoom) so they may express their opinions on the speeding issue (s), specifically: What is your view as to how big the problem is? Which areas of the village do you believe are most affected? What measures would you consider appropriate to combat the problem? Due to COVID restrictions, the meeting will be held via Zoom and the internet link details are:https://zoom.us/j/97780770607? pwd=K1l0Ujk3U21kVmk0ODUzSEVrRVVPdz09 Meeting ID: 977 8077 0607 Passcode: 210707 Anyone who does not have access to Zoom can still join the meeting by calling in by telephone using 0203 0512874 or 0203 4815237, and entering the meeting ID when prompted. Bramham Parish Council NB As this is a new way of openly engaging with fellow residents we would ask that you be patient if technical issues arise on the day….hopefully any problems will be quickly resolved and the meeting will be successful. 3

Bramham Parish Council Www.thisisbranham.co.uk November 2020 update

Hi all, As I write this in the middle of what we hope will be a short 2nd lockdown, on a dark morning with the weather certainly turning, it is sometimes difficult to imagine how we have arrived here and how we will return to our “normal” life. However, the future is what we create today, and we should take positivity from the beautiful village we live in and community that we have. Your council are looking to the future and will be shortly engaging with you so together we can create a joint longer term vision for the benefit of all. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” Eleanor Roosevelt I would like to welcome your two new councilors Mike Corrigan and Scott Jones who were recently co-opted onto the council. I am sure a lot of you will know either Mike or Scott and I am looking forward to working with both of them in the coming months. SPORTS AND LEISURE WORKING GROUP : This group will look at the overall plan for the village assets and amenities and advise the council on future projects and funding, as well as provide recommendations for the benefit of the village. In the new year we will formally constitute this group which will report to full council. Interested residents will be asked to apply to join. WEBSITE : The new website has been approved and is currently being developed and we are hoping it will go live very soon. Robin is currently asking for any photos that we can use so if you have any please respond to him directly or via the Clerk. Once its up and running it will be much easier to manage and will be a great source of information for the village. HIGHWAYS / SPEEDING / PARKING : Following last month’s activity it was great to see the installation of the Speed Indication Device near the school which is now fully working. Your council have also now approved 50% of the cost of a second device 7

December 2020 Dear Friends, Well, if nothing else, 2020 has been full of surprises. It was not the year any of us thought it would be, and our best laid plans of January are most likely unfulfilled. So it is a brave person indeed who dares to make predictions for 2021, but here goes... I have three... Prediction 1: Our communities will learn to pull together in new ways. We have learned afresh this year what is important in life and we must embrace those wonderful aspects of ourselves which we have been reminded of. St Mary's School takes as its vision statement the Fruit of the Spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." My first prediction for 2021 is that this will prove prophetic, and that fruit will become more evident. Let us pray it is so, and encourage one another to bear this kind of fruit in our dealings with one another. Prediction 2: We will look to a new political future. Whether any kind of meaningful Brexit deal emerges or not (and writing this in November, the details are still, depressingly, as opaque as they were back in 2016!) aspects of life and politics will change in 2021. A new U.S. President will be inaugurated in January, different in tone to their predecessor for sure, but populism around the globe hasn't disappeared, and nor have the politics of hate, fear and division. Those voices are never far away, so our voices must sing a different song, and sing it louder! In our churches, we will continue to look to the future with hope, even as we lament with those who grieve and have a sense of loss, and we will try to recapture a sense of joy. Prediction 3: God will go with us. Do I say that to reassure you, thinking that another challenging year lies ahead? Or do I say that triumphantly, confident that everything will get better in 11

Bramham in Bloom

2020 News Update

“ Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the Autumn Tree” Emily Bronte As we approach the last month of this challenging and unusual year, Bramham in Bloom look forward to producing our annual Action Plan for next year. Our AGM will take place early in 2021 depending on the pandemic situation. The date of this meeting will be circulated in this magazine. Review and reflections from this year Our work this year has been very spontaneous concentrating on maintaining displays and planting. Two community events in the wildlife area to clear Himalayan Balsam and branch chipping. Alison French, our treasurer, would like to thank all our sponsors, particularly this year for their donations. We lost some sponsors due to moving house and other circumstances and sadly the Monday Club has closed without Mavis at the helm. Details of new sponsorship opportunities will be discussed at the AGM. Some sponsor boards will be amended and some boards will need to be replaced due to damage by antisocial behaviour. Remembrance Day – Red polyanthus in the Cenotaph planters complemented renovation work to Cenotaph and looked vibrant for the service. New concepts have been developed to reflect plant context and situation, eg church troughs now have a white theme, the perennial bed has been planted to give a variety of foliage and flowers through the seasons and the slate bed reflects it’s dry situation. We are looking to continue this approach with sustainable schemes which reflect the need to conserve resources - both water and reuse/ longer value from plants. We are conscious that the village has only a few volunteers to do the work and we need to cut down on entire beds being replanted each season. Recruitment for new volunteers will take place in the new year. There is a variety of ways to get involved and you do not necessarily need to be a gardener! 15

The Friends of Bramham School, FOBS sponsor B in B and ensure the border/entrance to the school is kept updated. Recently they have planted crocus, daffodils, bluebells and winter flowering polyanthus. Parents have helped to prepare the schools amazing outdoor classroom. The children will soon be able to take part in spring time flower and vegetable planting, pond dipping and searching for mini beasts to promote their science learning and environmental awareness. We will be providing floral table displays for the Christmas Community Lunch. We hope the new season brings you all closer to your families and look forward to a better and more peaceful 2021. The Bramham in Bloom Committee have all contributed to this article and ongoing work will be to ensure Bramham is enhanced with beautiful and interesting planting schemes for our community. A Present for Christmas

THORP ARCH – Reflec ons of a Yorkshire Village before and during the Second World War’ Wri en by Richard Kennedy. Published by All Saints Church Thorp Arch in aid of church funds. About the book Richard started wri ng this beau fully illustrated book in the 1990s, in response to several people over the years remarking ‘if only they had wri en it down!’. “Mystery tours in charabancs were very popular during the summer months as very few people owned a car” The book complements ‘Thorp Arch – History of a Township’ by David Cummings, published for the Millennium, but taking a different approach. Richard and David assisted one another in their wri ngs. A brief scan through the book reveals the wealth of social history on offer. The pain ng is shown here on the front cover of the book. “German aircra flew over quite o en and we heard an -aircra guns firing but all this ac vity was at night” Most generously, earlier this year Richard donated his text for the book and the Tiger Moth pain ng to All Saints Church, for fund raising. How to order Richard Kennedy’s new book – a print run of 100 copies - is an ideal Christmas gi for family and friends, and for yourself too of course. Set by John Pendleton and printed in full colour on high quality A4 stock, the 54 page book fits easily into an A4 envelope for pos ng. The price is £10.00 per copy, which is the cost of produc on, plus £2.40 p&p if required. An accompanying voluntary dona on to All Saints Church, to help with building maintenance, would be most welcome. The Wetherby in Support of the Elderly team have been extremely busy keeping in touch with our friends and running as many of our services as possible from a distance. In addition, we supported the vulnerable through COVID-19 Helpline referrals. We are now working very hard on looking at how a phased, safe and deliverable series of activities can begin to take place. WiSE is very much looking forward to re-engaging with our friends over the full range of events and activities when the time is right. Progress has been slow but we are often in the hands of others and, above all else, we will not endanger the people we support or the broader public by coming back too soon in a way that is unsustainable and unsafe. If you require any further information or help please call the WiSE office on 01937 588994. If we can't help we will find someone who can. Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal With grateful thanks to the residents of Bramham who gave so generously to the Appeal this year. The RBL have not given us the amount raised yet but we will keep you informed. 27

Thanks to everyone for your ongoing support of BCAG in a year which has been full of uncertainties to say the least! We are still planning on lighting the Christmas Lights in the village on FRIDAY 27TH NOVEMBER AT 7.00PM. As this falls within the current national lockdown we hope you will join us live on on Facebook page. This year the Ward Councillors have kindly given us a sizeable donation towards the lights, however if you would like to make a contribution please get in touch with Philippa Dalton 07921 387 751. We are also asking Bramham residents to decorate a window, anything festive, and to light it up each evening in December as a countdown to Christmas. Hopefully this will add a little “Christmas Spirit” to the village for everyone to enjoy, young and old. We wish you all a very merry Christmas and best wishes and good health for 2021.
