I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone, both in our churches and in the wider village communities, for helping spread tidings of comfort and joy through December and over Christmas. Whether you were contributing to church services online or in our lovely church buildings, keeping Christmas magic alive for children with community events and trails, decorating and illuminating our villages and churches, many people's efforts really raised people's spirits - which was much needed for most of us at the end of a challenging and often exhausting year, it's fair to say. Above all, the spirit of Christmas was alive through charity fundraising, showing love and concern to the most vulnerable, and in being there for each other. So whether you count yourself a Christian or not, thank you to every one of you who, in your own way, spread the Christmas truth that love is alive in the world, and that joy can be revealed through strangers as well as friends. In the Church year, January brings the Epiphany season - in which divine enlightenment is celebrated, so I look forward to working together with you all to keep doing our bit to spread light, hope, love and peace in our villages and in the wider world throughout 2021. Love to you all
Rev Nick

Bramham Parish Council Www.thisisbranham.co.uk December 2020 update Hello all, I write this looking forward to what will be a different Christmas this year, but Christmas nonetheless and a time for reflecting on the year and being thankful for everything we have despite the difficulties we all have faced through a very strange, emotional and tough 2020. I am sure we are all looking forward to getting back to “normal” as soon as we can in 2021, and I think we will no doubt appreciate more what we have and enjoy it with renewed vigor. “Peace on earth will come to stay, When we live Christmas every day.” – Helen Steiner Rice SENIOR CITIZEN CENTRE : New updated plans were reviewed and it was agreed to apply for full planning permission, the revised plans include a full working kitchen and a toilet with disabled accessibility. This exciting project will be subject to further discussion and final approval and combined with the Wildlife Area would make an outstanding community facility at the heart of the village. WEBSITE : This is now well underway with the appointed partner developing the required pages and transferring information across. We hope to include an automated booking system for the pavilion. PEST CONTROL : We have seen an increase in activity of both rabbits and moles on the playing fields and Children’s Play Area. This is causing damage and also creating hazards for the users of the football pitches. We have therefore appointed a Pest Control Officer to help us manage the situation and bring this under control again. This tends to happen every two to three years and whilst we understand that not everyone will agree with this approach we have to be mindful of potential injury to those who hire the fields for use and the safety of our community. HIGHWAYS / SPEEDING / PARKING : Mike Corrigan reported on the great success of the public meeting on the 30th November, it was good that so many people attended and contributed. We will take these ideas forward and formulate a plan for the village which will incorporate the 2nd SID (50% funded by Clifford PC) 7
8 8
PAVILION FUND : It was agreed that £9,498.82 will be ring-fenced for the future development of the Pavilion. This money represents the surplus of funds that have been raised by volunteers over the last 6 or 7 years by the Pavilion Committee. We are grateful to be in such a positive position and would like to thank all of those involved in the fund raising and those who have contributed. Hopefully we will be able to recommence activities at the Pavilion during 2021 when we plan to hold further events. WILDLIFE AREA : We have carried out a survey of the trees and their condition and will be looking to discuss this with LCC and Bramham Park. There will be some work required to bring the trees into a manageable position and protect their long term future. PUBLIC SESSION : We always reserve the first part of the meeting for members of the public to make comments or raise any issues or concerns, each participant will be given a maximum of 3 minutes. For more complex matters we would suggest raising them via correspondence with the Clerk who will circulate to the full council. After the 15 minutes is completed, the Parish Council will then start working through the agenda items, upon which no further public participation will occur. This is in order to complete the meeting in a timely manner. So we would encourage comments to be raised at the start please. Thank you for helping us help you. PLANNING ISSUES: Lodge Gardens : Erecting a stable block with hard standing . Folly House Development : Set up of the site has commenced. Next meeting: Wednesday 6th January 2021 7.00pm Virtual - if you would like to attend please register with the Clerk or see the Agenda for the link. Thank you for reading and for your continued support. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed the Minutes of the meeting can be found on our Parish Notice Board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. Best wishes

SPEEDING ISSUES IN BRAMHAM Firstly we would like to thank all those who attended the “Speeding issues” meeting on the 30th November and for sharing their comments and concerns. Everyone had the opportunity to speak until sadly we had to close the meeting very quickly because we were “Zoom bombed”. We would like to apologise for the foul language used by those who intruded on the meeting. We will be taking all your comments into account in the drive (please excuse the pun) towards a safer road network in Bramham. Secondly, whilst everyone had particular points to make, of common concern were the speed limits along the whole length of Paradise Way and especially between the Thorner Road junction and the Traffic lights at the old “Bowcliffe Corner”; at the midpoint of which lies the junction with Bowcliffe Road, one of the main routes into the village proper. It was hoped by many that the accidents which have occurred both at the junction and opposite Paradise Farm over the past two years will provide compelling evidence for change. It is not possible or appropriate to record all comments in this article, but suffice to say comments were made about a number of the roads, including their signage, speed limits and usage, and these included Aberford Road, Front Street, Bowcliffe Road, Clifford Road, Lyndon Avenue, Lyndon Road, Back Lane/Vicarage lane, Windmill Road and Toulston Lane. Thirdly it was generally agreed that whilst changes to the speed limits and infrastructure such as signage and lighting could be of immense benefit changing driver awareness and behaviour is perhaps of greater importance. It was acknowledged that it was not only vehicles passing through the village that were at fault but that residents themselves were not always keeping to the new limits within their village. Finally, once again thank you to all who attended; we would like to maintain this wider resident engagement, either via Zoom or when Covid restrictions allow face-to-face meetings; further sessions will be advertised, with both speeding and other traffic management issues being discussed as appropriate. Happy New Year to you All Traffic Management Working Group Bramham cum Oglethorpe Parish Council 11

Happy New Year to you all! I looked back on the letter I wrote for January 2020 and found it was full of talk about travel; the visits we would all have made to see relatives and the travel of refugees in most countries around the world. Well! What a difference twelve months makes. Many of you will have had Christmas without visits or visitors. It doesn’t matter that the government gave us a ‘holiday’ from restrictions, a great number of us were too cautious to rush into a situation that might have put those we love in danger of contracting the Covid19 virus. As we heard through the summer months of 2020, the travel of refugees did not seem to be affected by the pandemic. Just as the holy family, two thousand years ago, had to flee to Egypt to avoid persecution, many of those who risked the dangers of the high seas or sealed lorries were fleeing from political persecution and a small matter of a pandemic would not deter them. The charities set up to give aid to the less fortunate, those in camps or in dire circumstances in their own countries, have noted a dramatic reduction in their income in 2020. The fundraising that comes from the activities of so many who run marathons, hold fetes, donate to shops, or stand on streets collecting spare cash, has all become a victim of the restrictions on our movement. The lockdown has made us all aware of our responsibility to those who rely on charities and so many of you have donated. Thank you. Last year was one so different and I am reminded of that music called ‘ The good, the bad and the ugly’. Many are eager to tell us all about the bad and the ugly, but we have so many good things we can thank the Lord for. Cast your mind back to the birdsong we could hear as we sat in our gardens in the spring, the sunshine that brightened our 13

days. Remember the appreciation we all felt for the keyworkers and the sense of community as we stood in the street and and clapped. A sense of community came to mean something important to those who live alone and to those who volunteered to help. Our churches survived as the government banned public worship, and those who embraced the world of IT were able to join in and access services put out by Rev Nick. We were encouraged to find that God is with us wherever we are, at home, in the garden or in our bubble. How many people found the peace that comes from going into our opened churches last autumn and having a quiet few minutes of private prayer? It may become a habit that is well worth keeping up. The last nine and a half months have been a new experience for most of us and I hope this new year brings us to a sense of normality. Grateful thanks due to the people who are the instruments of God’s goodness; the keyworkers, the scientists who have given us a vaccine, the volunteers and all who have found meaning in the commandment, ‘love your neighbour as yourself’. A joyful new year to you all.
Revd Trish Another excruciating one-liner! What time of day was Adam created? Just a little before Eve.

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM
Welcome to our New Year 2021!! It has taken me some time to plan the opening to our Bramham and Bloom article for this year. How do we decide where we are? Let’s hope this year will be somewhat brighter than last year. Motivation and positivity may be at an all time low, but I am looking forward to a successful vaccination period plus more time to see families and friends and a chance to be involved in lots of gardening ‌.. fingers crossed!! Most of all I hope there were some Christmas festivities around the village. Unfortunately the rain has made many flower beds and displays water-logged. The committee will be busy getting to grips with our potential Annual Action Plan for the coming planting and gardening seasons. We are looking forward to developing Wetherby Road corner into a special garden area when Utility Services have completed their work. The Senior Citizen Centre and Garden works may get started which will be a very exciting project. Hopefully the centre and garden will encourage various groups to take advantage of the newly created inclusive space in the future. Repairs to sponsor boards and tidying will take place as soon as possible. If there are any places in the village where you would like to see something new or an improvement please get in touch with myself or a member of the committee. Let’s hope for a more Covid free time in 2021.

BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents tickets at the Leeds Festival together with other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the fund has allocated grants in excess of ÂŁ380,000.
THE CLOSING DATE IS 14TH FEBRUARY 2021 To keep it simple there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank Bramham LS23 6RS or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. Proposed projects should normally be completed within one year of the grant being awarded. If a project is expected to exceed that timescale, the application should indicate as such. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool 17
BRAMHAM’S COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS LUNCH 2020
In a grand Yorkshire village called Bramham There’s a tradition at this time of year, To invite them on their tod on Christmas Day, T’Village Hall for some dinner and cheer. But, this year, Christmas lunch were goin’ to be different, Folks were somewhat downcast, It were a very strange kind of feeling, After a year nowt like owt in years past. Some said “It’s bound to get better”, Others said “couldn’t get much worse”, And then when we heard t’hall were shutting…. ..well, we all thought quite the reverse! We ‘ad to think fast about t’dinner, What wi’ lockdown, virus and such, So we called on t’spirit of Christmas, To give us a bit of a push. We did an appeal on t’social with a shrug We weren’t expecting much to be honest, And would’ve made do wi’ a virtual hug But people were queueing to Clifford, Socially distanced, of course, To donate whate’er they could lay their hands on… ….lawfully, I should reinforce! In the end there were enough for a ready-made lunch and a hamper Filled wi’ mince pies, n’biscuits n chocs, ‘n jams, n’ chutneys, tea coffee, wine, All packaged up in Bramham’s own Christmas Box. There were poinsettas ‘n kids decorations, A calendar for a better new year Somewag brought a tree nicked from T’old Hall, We couldn’t accept that this year!
18
Then, though Santa ‘imself couldn’t make it, Some elves turned up in his place, To deliver the meals and the hampers, With the message “wash hands, cover face and make space”! I just wish that Santa ‘ad bin there To see everyone enjoyin’ repast, And raising a glass of sherry To all o’them that ‘ad passed You see Christmas is a time for rememberin’ As we play all those old festive tunes, Old friends who dance just like snowflakes, Precious and gone all too soon. Thank you everyone in and around Bramham for your generosity of spirit! Pete

As we enter 2021 we would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year with hopes that this year will be less disrupted and easier for one and all. Thanks to all for your support throughout 2020, despite us being unable to have our usual events such as the Summer Gala. We still managed to enjoy Easter Windows and treats delivered by our very own Superhero, a Scarecrow Trail and the Christmas activities and windows throughout the village. We would also like to thank those who have kindly donated towards the village Christmas Lights this year – they certainly have cheered us all up as has the Christmas Tree by the Senior Citizen Centre. Restrictions permitting, we hope to be back in force this year so watch this space for more information! BCAG Committee *********************************
THANK YOU BRAMHAM COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP The Christmas Tree in the Square looked wonderful and the many lights around the Square and Front Street were a joy to see, especially this year when many of us are feeling fed up.

Bramham NSPCC would like to thank all those who purchased wreaths and Christmas cards over the last few weeks. Together with some very generous donations we raised the fantastic sum of ÂŁ539. Unfortunately we had to cancel all our planned fundraising events during this difficult year so it is particularly pleasing to raise such an outstanding amount for this worthwhile charity. We hope to be back next year and, government guidelines permitting, we plan to welcome Snake Davis back to the Village Hall on Saturday 24th April for another toe tapping evening of musical entertainment. We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2021.
The Wetherby in Support of the Elderly team have been extremely busy keeping in touch with our friends and running as many of our services as possible from a distance. In addition, we supported the vulnerable through COVID-19 Helpline referrals. We are now working very hard on looking at how a phased, safe and deliverable series of activities can begin to take place. WiSE is very much looking forward to re-engaging with our friends over the full range of events and activities when the time is right. Progress has been slow but we are often in the hands of others and, above all else, we will not endanger the people we support or the broader public by coming back too soon in a way that is unsustainable and unsafe. If you require any further information or help please call the WiSE office on 01937 588994. If we can't help we will find someone who can. 27
