Most people know about the Folly Allotments up on Aberford Road which the Bramham Park Estate donated to returning soldiers from World War 1. However the village is very fortunate in having a second set of Allotments just over the A1. Tenter Hill Allotments have been in existence for many years, and belong to the Parish Council. Tenter Hill is a larger site with some larger Allotments and some Allotments have chickens, ducks and geese. With the arrival of the meeting place cabin at Tenter Hill Allotment this week, the scene is set to celebrate the rejuvenation of this site. Bramham Parish Council, Bramham Park estate, the Community Fund and Ward Councillors have all contributed to improve this site for allotment holders. Willing volunteers, including a special mention to James Ingham and his tractor have worked very hard to remove much debris to make this site safe and pleasant to work on. New fencing has made the site more secure, the creation of new and smaller allotments means that many more people are able to enjoy working on this site, and the final addition of the cabin will allow allotment holders to better manage their site together. This has been a challenging process but one which the outcome has totally justified. Grateful thanks to all who have made this happen especially the committee members of the Tenter Hill Allotments Association who have worked tirelessly towards this goal. Congratulations to everyone.

Fresh Air and Exercise! Get Both While delivering Bramham Parish Magazine. Deliverer wanted for Lyndon Avenue

Contact Jillian 844858 Have you ever heard a certain song or tune that immediately takes you back to your youth? It can be a very poignant moment. When researchers at the University of Westminster examined the choices of 80 different guests on the BBC radio show Desert Island Discs, they found that most guests had chosen music which dated back to when they had been between 10 to 30 years old. This time span was identified as a ‘self-defining period’ in their lives. The research concluded: “The music we know and love between the ages of 10 to 30 will play a significant role throughout our lives, connecting us as individuals to other people, places and times that become central to our identity.” What songs trigger the big memories for you? What is your favourite hymn? Please let us know? Lets hope that Sing Bramham will soon be allowed to begin again. 9

To all the Knit and Kna%erers ( and those who would like to be) If your fingers are twitching un.l such .me as we can get together again Trish has seen an ar.cle in the Church Times that might interest you. “The former director of Friends of Albania, Primrose Peacock, is calling for people to knit hats for children in Albania who were le5 homeless by the 2019 earthquake in Durres. The hope is that the hats will be distributed in .me for Christmas.’’ “ Miss Peacock has asked for the hats to be the pull-on type, bonnet, beret or balaclava, to fit children aged between 2 and 12 years. The request is for no pom-poms, bobbles and tassels, to save weight.’’ If you find the .me and the wool to do knit a/some hats, please give them to Rev Trish or hand them into the Parish Office at St. Mary’s before the end of October.

Wydale update As .mes are forever changing- I have to throw a word of cau.on to those who have signed up to the Ladies of the Benefice retreat at Wydale Hall in September. I have had an email from Mark telling me that they have s.ll not had the green light to open for visitors to stay over. This does not mean that it is all off, just that it is on ‘pause’ for the .me being. Please keep Wydale Hall and Mark and Helen in your prayers and do not fill our dates – 23rd to 25th Sept- with anything else just in case we are able to go at the last minute! Rev Trish

THE CHURCHYARD PROJECT

A couple of years ago we discussed a new Data base for the Churchyard, a good map/plan of the old graves in the churchyard which would record the many names of those mentioned on grave stones. This scheme has not been forgotten but lack of time and helpers put this idea on the back burner. We hope to begin again and if you are interested in the history of our churchyard do get in touch with Neil Ferres 845274 13

The Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association (see page 13) .

The Bramham YCA was formed in 1984. All Yorkshire Groups were part of the W.I. but in 1983 the W I insisted Yorkshire was divided into the Ridings and that each Riding was to be administered as a completely separate entity. Since this was not popular Yorkshire decided to “go it alone”. The N F U allowed us to use one of their rooms as our Head Office and we developed from there. It is with great regret that I must now close our branch as numbers no longer make it viable. We have had some wonderful times—outings, meals out, interaction with other groups and some interesting and entertaining speakers. I would like to thank everyone for their support over the years. Members can of course attend other groups either as guests, or, if they wish to join. Anne Topping 15

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM September 2020

Hello everyone…..what strange times we are living through at the moment….nearly three quarters through the year and where has the time gone? Lovely weather but lockdown has had some negative aspects and some positive aspects . Folly Allotments have really been maintained by all plot holders and a positive community developed from much activity. Tenter Hill Allotments have been able to send surplus vegetable produce to St George’s Crypt as we have in the past.

At the AGM in October 2019 the committee decided to spend the following year 2020 addressing future developments required to reflect the ongoing needs of the village. These included changes to plant selection and maintenance to meet the effects of climate change, together with the need for more volunteers. However with the onset of lockdown in March 2020 we needed a new approach. Plants for Spring planting were not available as the Arium was closed. So we have tried to keep the village tidy with plants available from garden centres. The War Memorial, the Red Lion and the plants around the Square have been very successful. Thank you to Keith Howland for mowing around flower beds particularly Lyndon Road rockery. The Committee have been busy working in the Wildlife Area pulling out the Himalayan Balsam before it dispenses all its seeds. See p 34 Hopefully we will be able to plant up areas in the Autumn. Thank you to all our sponsors, volunteers and my committee during this difficult time. Lynne Marshall Chair Bramham in Bloom

The weeks and months of lockdown have been difficult and testing times for many of us, but they have also provided the opportunity to look afresh at the world of nature. With less traffic on the roads, less air pollution, and less noise pollution, the sky has somehow seemed bluer and the bird song more joyful and confident. It is appropriate that we focus this month on one such bird noted for its liquid, tinkling song – the goldfinch. In this month we also celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8 September, and so the painting is ‘The Madonna of the Goldfinch’ by Raphael. Raphael was only 37 years old when he died in 1520, but his work is marked by maturity and great beauty. No more so than in this painting which shows Mary with a young Jesus and John the Baptist. You could easily miss the tiny bird which is carefully held by John and gently stroked by Jesus, who has one foot resting on His mother’s. It is an intimate, tender scene which was painted in 1505 as a wedding gift for Lorenzo Nasi. It was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1548, painstakingly restored in the early part of this century, and now hangs in the Uffizi in Florence. As we look, we rejoice in the grace and simplicity of the scene. We look again and ask ourselves ‘Why a goldfinch?’ The bird has a red spot on its head, and legend tells that the goldfinch flew down to the cross of Calvary to take a thorn from the crown of thorns. As it pulled the thorn in its beak, its head was splashed with a drop of blood. And so this painting of gentleness and innocence opens out into a wider canvas of redemptive love. Our thoughts move from infancy to the cross. Mary, sat on a rock, is reading ‘The Throne of Wisdom’, and the artist is inviting us to ponder where true wisdom is found. Here, as we look at the wonder of nature and new life with a mother and children, but also as we look ahead to the ‘wisest love’ of Jesus who is our Redeemer. 23

The Clergy Le>er for September As we come to the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, I wonder what the future holds for each of us? At one .me we would have the next three months mapped out with visits, holidays, school, college, and university. Life would be loosely predictable, but this year is different. People keep telling us there is going to be a ‘new normal’ a5er the Covid19 pandemic. BBC Radio 4 ran a series of ar.cles asking various well-known people, and members of the public, what they would like to see in this ‘new normal’. There were as many different ideas as there were people who responded. What would you put into this ‘new normal’? How would you like to see your community work with people who had a chance to change things for the be%er? If your list includes kindness, politeness, and love for your neighbours, are you sure you can live up to your own aims? Do you remember your neighbours’ open windows when you have a barbeque? Do you think of young children asleep when you spend your evening mowing the lawn? Do you smile and pass the .me of day with the noisy neighbours who chat in the garden .ll it is passed your bed.me? Oh, how wonderful it would be to live in this ‘new normal’ if everyone could follow their own ideals! What about the wider world? The Utopia that could be possible if everyone followed even the simplest of aims -love your neighbour as yourself. We all feel possessive about our own na.onal boundaries and think we have the answers to the ills of every other na.on but think bigger than that! Look at the world as God’s crea.on, the original ‘new normal’. A gi5 to humanity, set out with that simple rule of loving your neighbour. 28

Of course, since we are merely flawed human beings, the world, sadly, does not achieve its poten.al of a perfect community. We are part of this global pandemic, which means we are part of something that touches most of all the world’s popula.on and leaves us all contempla.ng the possibility of a ‘new normal’ wherever we live in the world. In this country we have marvelled at the colours and sounds of spring and summer without the pollu.on of constant traffic in the air we breathe. We have found new ways to communicate with those we love, and we have learnt to appreciate those people who put themselves out for the benefit of others every day. Chris.ans around the world have found ways to worship without gathering together, discovering that God will be with us everywhere and every day. Others have joined in with our digital worship and found something to make sense of their lives. We need our eyes and ears open to welcome those who join us. If we can all find the resolve to reboot our world a5er this pandemic using those original rules of crea.on; Love God our creator and love our neighbours as ourselves, we stand a chance of leaving this world in a stronger place for future genera.ons. It is not up to governments to legislate for the changes, it is up to individuals, you and me, to implement the change of heart needed to follow what God would like us to do for each other. Changing the world requires us all to look at the ‘new normal’ and follow God’s guidance to make it happen. Love God with all your heart and soul and mind and love your neighbour as yourself. Go for it!
