How is your school days Latin? .. On the following page copied from the 1813 of Bramham Burial Register. I tried to include a page from the 1580 register but it would not transfer to this page of the magazine. Written in Latin and elaborate script. The first registers in England were compiled in 1538 during the reign of Henry VIII. In the very early days the death would be recorded on to paper registers and in 1597 during the reign of Elizabeth I Registers had to be recorded on Vellum. In 1597 a copy of the Burial had to be made and sent to the Bishop (Bishops Transcripts) these copies were often in better order than the Parish Register. In some instances the original paper registers were transcribed onto Vellum. Which explains why, in some cases, the same hand writing is used in the register for about 60 years. Of course not many people could read or write at the time. As the centuries go by there are various changes and by 1813 the Registers were more organised and standardised. In 1678—1814 an avidavit was sworn to state that the body had been buried in wool or a fine would be imposed of £5. This was to support the wool trade. In 1783 stamp duty of 3 pence per entry was introduced but Paupers were exempt. The early records included Baptisms and Death entries together. The Baptism was the important event rather than the birth. The name of the father is mentioned and rarely the mother !! A separate register was used for Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. They are written in English and the writing is much easier to read. In 1837 Civil Registration was introduced and this gathered together all the information about residents in an area. Now the event has to be carefully registered with name of the deceased, date of burial, place of residence and their age. Date of death may be added in the margin. We have a project in Bramham now which is recording all the graves in the Churchyard and all burials in the Burial Register will be recorded together. So far the mapping of the Churchyard has been completed and the underground survey will be undertaken very soon. If you are interested in helping us transcribe the Registers do please get in touch with
Neil Ferres.

Bramham Parish Council Www.thisisbranham.co.uk January 2021 update Hello all, Happy New Year everyone ……. I hope you all enjoyed the “Christmas break” and made the best of the situation. Now we are in lockdown again, I’m using the time to catch up on all those little jobs I hadn’t got around to doing previously. I’m also thinking about the year ahead especially as I walk around the village looking out for those first signs of life in the gardens, and I’m looking forward to enjoying the beautiful blossoms in the churchyard. “I glanced out the window at the signs of spring. The sky was almost blue, the trees were almost budding, the sun was almost bright.” — Millard Kaufman Its been a quieter month for the Parish Council, as its only been a relatively short period of time since last month’s meeting with the Christmas period inbetween. PARISH COUNCIL VACANCY : We would like to thank Robin for his time on the Council and the work he has put into the activities he has been involved in. Following Robin’s resignation there is now a vacancy on the Council and we would encourage anyone who would like to join to apply, no previous experience is required. SENIOR CITIZEN CENTRE : Although the centre remains closed due to the current restrictions we are looking forward to the development, and the newly submitted plans look great. We will update you all very soon on the plans. WEBSITE : There has been a lot of work carried out on the new website and we hope to have this live during February. Thank you to all who have worked on this and submitted pictures HIGHWAYS / SPEEDING / PARKING : Work continues and there is a separate article in the magazine to update everyone on the current activity. There has been some damage to the newly installed SID (Speed Indication Device), and we would ask that this expensive piece of equipment is respected. We will shortly be downloading the information from the device in order that we can review the information captured which will be helpful for future planning activities. Please see page 27 and 29

WILDLIFE AREA : The Tree Survey and Condition Report has now been submitted to Bramham Park. We have also received some correspondence from local residents. Once we have had responses and developed a proposal for presentation to the council we will share the next steps. PLANNING ISSUES: There is little to report under planning this month, apart from noting the application for the new Senior Citizen Centre. We would encourage residents to attend the meetings as its great to have feedback and questions from the wider community. Next meeting: Wednesday 3rd 2021 7.00pm Virtual - if you would like to attend please register with the Clerk or see the Agenda for the link. Thank you for reading and for your continued support. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed the Minutes of the meeting can be found on our Parish Notice Board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. PHONE: A traditional language service of Mattins from the Book of Common Prayer will be led by the Rev'd Trish Anslow at 11am every week, and joining in is as simple as picking up the phone and dialling in. This is technology which most of us are familiar with, and this has proven very popular other parts of the country during previous lockdowns. All you need is a Book of Common Prayer (and if you don't have one, contact the parish office and we will lend you one!). Details of how to join this service are on the poster
see page 3
As far as we know at the time of writing, we are still able to keep Bramham (10am - 4pm) and Boston Spa (9.30am 3.30pm) churches open daily for foodbank drop-offs and private prayer. You can still contact the Parish Office and our clergy as before. Church has not closed or gone away, in fact we are busier than ever. Do contact us if you need help accessing our services, or simply are feeling isolated. We are here for you. Yours in Christ, The Reverend Nick Morgan The Church OPEN DOOR fund The Winning number of the December Draw was 140 Mrs Dolly Mullen. There are 4 draws during the year and the cost is £10 per person for the year. We normally collect subscriptions in September but we are happy to enrol anyone at any time. Do please contact Anne Palmer if you would like to take part. 842850. The money is used for the general every day expenses just to keep the church door open. 2020 was a very difficult year for the Church and hundreds of Charities. The Bramham
in Bloom news is very
similar to January.very llttle has changed. We have not been able to hold our Annual Action Plan Meeting as everyone is so busy coping with pandemic issues. We will all look forward to Spring arriving. There are signs in the Village of daffodils coming through on Bowcliffe Road Corner with Paradise Way. We planted bulbs last Autumn at the School, Clifford Road perennial bed and in the beds near the Milnthorpe's. So look for signs of Spring in and around the village. Bramham in Bloom were pleased to donate plants for distribution along with the Christmas hampers. Best wishes to everyone and stay safe, Lynne Marshall Chair of Bramham in Bloom
Pray with Grannie A small boy went to church with his grandmother and joined her when she quietly slipped off the pew to kneel and pray. He even copied her example of burying her face in her hands. But after a few seconds his curiosity got the better of him. “Who are we hiding from, Grannie?

BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets for the Leeds Festival together with other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £400,000. The last allocation of grants, based on the 2019 Festival took place in March 2020. The 2020 Festival was cancelled, and the majority of residents who had applied for tickets have deferred their allocation to 2021. The Fund does not intend to award any grants from these payments until after the next Festival has taken place. It is still planned, however, to make some allocations in March 2021. These will be from unallocated balances from previous years and from those projects which subsequently did not require any or all of their grants, so the amount available is somewhat smaller than usual. The Fund is therefore now inviting applications.
The closing date is 14 February 2021. To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, Bramham, LS23 6RS or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. Proposed projects should normally be completed within one year of the grant being awarded. If a project is expected to exceed that timescale, the application should indicate as such. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool 17

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
AGM The AGM took place late last year having been delayed by COVID 19.The year has been a quiet one in many ways with our focus directed towards coping with Coronavirus , managing the government regulations and ensuring the health and safety of those still allowed to use the hall. Financially , there has been a significant reduction in rental income but the hall remains in a strong position because of funds held in reserve , rent from the attached cottage and a grant from the government. The Committee members are Stewart Gibson ( Chairman ) , Pete Dunn ( Vice Chairman ) , Val Whitbread ( Secretary ) , Claire Lister (Treasurer ) , Jillian Lawson , Linda Matthews , Yvonne Gibson and Chris Gibson . We wish everyone in our village A HAPPY NEW YEAR ! CHRISTMAS LUNCH – A BIG THANK YOU ! Unfortunately the annual lunch was unable to take place this year but thanks to the ingenuity of our Vice Chairman Pete Dunn along with the assistance of a large number of helpers and many generous donations we were able to deliver 30 hampers to local residents . Our delivery “ elves “ were also able to spend a little time chatting with the recipients of the hampers. We believe this is an important event in the Bramham calendar and one which truly reflects the community spirit in our village. Along with Pete I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who donated or who gave their time and assistance in making this event the success it was. It is impossible to name all of them here , but , please be aware , we are very grateful to each and everyone of you Stewart Gibson , Chairman , Bramham Village Hall Management

Psalms for Life The Book of Psalms is a wonderful, Divinelyinspired collection of poetry, drawing on honest and heartfelt human experiences of a life of faith. The Psalms lie at the heart of Christian worship and continue to inspire, teach and guide. The Rev’d Nick Morgan offers four online reflections, each centred upon three psalms with a common theme. The reflections are live at 7pm on Tuesdays and may also be watched at any time thereafter on the Bramham Benefice Facebook page. Join Psalms for Life at www.Facebook.com/BramhamBenefice or at www.BramhamBenefice.org at 7pm on the following Tuesdays: 23rd February 2nd March 9th March 16th March
Psalms in Times of Trouble Ps.12, 18 & 20 Psalms of Trust in God Ps. 27, 91 & 146 Psalms of Penitence Ps. 32, 51 & 130 Psalms of Redemption Ps. 15, 126 & 138
Each reflection begins with an introduction to the theme and some thoughts on how the psalms we shall hear deal with those themes. The Psalms are sung in a traditional language translation, then after a pause, read in a modern translation. A time of silence follows, concluding with a short prayer. It is anticipated that these reflections will each last around 20 minutes.
If you do not have a Facebook account, the sessions are also livestreamed on the homepage of www.BramhamBenefice.org All four sessions will remain available for viewing on the Bramham Benefice Facebook page indefinitely after the life stream has finished.

HAVE I BROKEN THE LAW? HAVE I EXCEEDED THE SPEED LIMITS IN AND AROUND THE VILLAGE? At the present time there is a lot of discussion, quite rightly so, about vehicles/drivers exceeding the speed limits in and around the village and especially at the road entrances to the village along Bowcliffe Road, Wetherby Road and Clifford Road; but also the surrounding roads which include Paradise Way, Aberford Road, Toulston Lane and Windmill Road. Whilst many vehicles are undoubtedly just “passing though” from and to places further afield there are a large number of vehicles leaving and returning to the village i.e. vehicles driven by, or associated with residents. For all vehicles and especially those just “passing through” it is expected that a review of the signage, lighting and introduction of Vehicle Activated Devices (Speed Indicator Signs) of one form or another will help to slow down the traffic and control vehicle speeds; however the most important and effective measure is education and “driver awareness”. There is a lot of work to be done in conjunction with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Leeds City Council Highways but we can all benefit from a review of our own driver awareness. In a modern vehicle it is easy to unintentionally exceed the speed limit without realising it. This is especially so in automatics, they are quiet and do not give the same feedback as manuals where the driver has to make the conscious decision to change gear; however with manual gears it generally feels unnatural to cruise along in second or third gear - the gears most appropriate, in most cars, to a 20mph limit and the temptation is always there to change up a gear. 27
28
HOW CAN WE BECOME MORE AWARE? Know where the limited areas start and finish - Bramham is almost entirely within a 20mph “Zone” which includes the roads of major concern within the village, Bowcliffe Road, Wetherby Road and Clifford Road. Knowing that we are in a 20mph Zone turn off/down distractions within the vehicle and try not to be distracted by conversations within the vehicle. The village has been made a 20mph Zone for a reason - it is a residential village and if we keep within the limits then it will be a safer village for all concerned. Do not be provoked to exceed the limit by other road users. There should be little to no need to overtake whilst within the zone. Finally, many cars are fitted with GPS based Sign Recognition facilities and can set the upper limit as appropriate - use if possible. In writing this article we acknowledge that there are many residents who are already aware and drive safely whilst keeping to the limits but in order to access those who do not everyone has been targetted; on the basis that everyday should be a “school day” we hope that we can all learn something from the above.
