This year is flying by! Hard to believe we are going to be heading into Summer soon. My little one will be starting Kindergarten next Fall, which I still can’t believe. I’m looking forward to heading to Disney World for a convention and then a family vacation in May. I wanted to extend my appreciation to Andrea Latimer for serving as the EBCA Secretary for the last year and a half. We appreciate all of her hard work and will miss having you on the board. Hailey Ayres, with Wingard Construction has graciously taken over the responsibilities and I look forward to working with her.

I hope you all enjoyed the April luncheon. A big thank you to John Lee and Marty Dito from the California DOI Fraud Division for an awesome presentation. I really enjoyed hearing about the cases they investigate. Hopefully we can get them back again next year to hear about more of their cases.

I am looking forward to our May speakers, Mark E. Inbody and Jennifer H. Wahlgren, from the Selman Breitman law firm, speaking on Bad Faith Claims.

Mark Inbody is a Partner in Selman Breitman’s San Francisco Office and is a Member of the firm’s Insurance, Commercial Litigation, and Construction Practice Groups. He represents insurers in coverage disputes and litigation, including cases arising out of internet commerce, product liability, construction defect, environmental contamination, professional liability, transportation, and inter-insurer disputes.

Mr. Inbody received his Juris Doctorate from Santa Clara University School of Law, Santa Clara, Californnia in 1995, following graduating with Honors from Pomona College in 1991, where he received a B.A. degree Majoring in Government Mark’s extensive experience in Insurance provides him a unique ability to evaluate complex coverage issues for efficient

resolution of coverage disputes. He works closely with clients and defense counsel to achieve the common interest of efficient resolution of litigation against insureds.

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Mark presently resides in Marin County with his wife, Mia. When not helping clients with their legal needs he spends his time engaged in futile pursuits such as cycling and waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series... oh! wait no more!

Jennifer Wahlgren is an Associate in Selman Breitman’s San Francisco Office and is a Member of the firm’s Insurance Practice Group. Lee & Dito Tag-Team for Inside Look at CDI Fraud Investigations at April EBCA

Attendees at the April 10, 2017 East Bay Claims Association luncheon meeting were treated to an insiders’ look at Department of Insurance Fraud Investigations. The EBCA welcomed “tag team” speakers, Detectives John Lee and Marty Dito.

“There are Nine Fraud Division offices in California,” explained Detective Lee. “We cover the Bay Area.”

When investigating a claim that suggests suspected fraud, whether as a carrier or an agent for an insurance company, it is important to fill out the form Examples of multiple claims on the same vehicles. and submit to Department of Insurance.

“You are required to submit CA Insurance Code (CIC) Section 18724, print or type,” said Dito.

The duo offered guidelines and time-lines for optimum submission.

The duo shared several interesting and engaging case study examples of fraudulent claims.

They said most cases do not go further than initial charges because attorneys work it out.

“When you are investigating a claim go the extra mile and ask questions,” they advised.

MELGOZA NAMED NEW WINGARD CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ESTIMATOR Wingard Construction continues to grow, announcing the addition of long time industry pro and Project Estimator, Ed Melgoza, to their team.

Having started his career in the water/fire restoration industry back in 1995, Ed has achieved IICRC certifications in water, fire, mold and Xactimate training.

A native of the East Bay area, Melgoza is known for his friendly personality and commitment to the work.

“Helping people/businesses get back to work after a large or small water/fire disaster is a huge accomplishment for me,” he said. “Especially when I work with families and children are involved. Getting them back to normal life is a great feeling in what I do,” he continued.

President Gemma Houser shared “I’d like to go to Italy”.

VP Michelle Windsor-Baughman confided that “I’d like to go on Shark Tank!”

Secretary Hailey Ayres responded “I want to go to Burning Man!” Treasurer John Ehlert was more into the sports side, saying “Snow board and Wake board in the same day!”

Board members had their own varied priorities: Jennifer Pinney said she’d like to “Go on a shopping spree in New York City at Christmas!”

Kathleen Taylor said she would like to “Live in Italy for a year, take painting and cooking classes.”

Lisa Winn would head for France. “Visit Paris to see the Eiffel Tower,” she said.

Amaya Fine would “Vacation in Bora Bora”.

Lynna Harrison wants to visit all 50 states in the Union. “I have 5 to go,” she shared: Wisconsin, Montana, the Dakotas and Bryan Harrison stated flatly, “I want to see the Aurora Boreealis/Northern Lights”.
