May 2019 Message from SCA President, Steve Moore, PE, CASp
Golf tournaments, horse races, and educational classes. These are all things that occur on, in , or along a course! For the SCA it looks like the month of May is filled with ”course” related things. So, of course, as a matter of course, a course of action… To quote Whitesnake…”Here I go again”…a ginormous THANK YOU! to Mr. Hector Alvarez! Hector thrilled and educated our Members at the annual April luncheon. Hector’s presentation on “Workplace Violence, Prevention and Coping” was very well attended and informative. Hector focused his presentation on how our many Members, who are in the field dealing with property claims, can identify potential threats, make sure they are not perceived as a potential threat, and must consciously plan for any potential threats. Hector contacted me the day after the luncheon and let me know it was his pleasure speaking to our group and he would love to do it again! Although our own Rob Sedgwick was there at the luncheon, and was willing, Hector did not need a “practice dummy” for any selfdefense moves. Both Rob and I were a little disappointed.
SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp
sold out of both sponsorships, tee boxes, and golf foursomes! WOW! Our dual team of Eagle Sponsors, JM Environmental and Regas Group, are back to astound us with their tee box set ups on hole #1 and #18. I can’t wait to see the tee box setups for this year’s theme “Viva Las Vegas!” The SCA Board of Directors would like to throw out a humongous THANK YOU! to our Membership for your continued support of our association’s main fundraiser! So, please make sure your annual dues are paid and hopefully you can participate in the golf tournament some how or some way. For more information please visit our website at www. sacramentoclaims.org.
Looking forward at the SCA Calendar of Events, I can see our annual social mixer at Mayahuel in June and also the SCA Family Night at the River Cats game! 2019 SCA Membership! Join/Renew for 2019 NOW!
Annual Membership earns discounts, includes priority privileges and helps fund the organization The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested Jump On-Board NOW! $10 donation going to the charitable fund). Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Go to www.SacramentoClaims.org

Mr. Alvarez is a security expert who specializes in workplace violence prevention. He is a Certified Threat Manager™ by the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals and an Instructor in Mental Health First Aid. Alvarez shared from his more than 25 years of experience serving as Security Director protecting one of our nation’s most sensitive critical infrastructures, to working as a city police officer and as a professional consultant. He advocated a strong posture, demeanor and even assertiveness in defusing potentially hazardous situations, whether with workers directly, or for the many in the room who are out in the field, working with the public, distressed claimants and others. His presentation helped bring a sense of clarity to many in the crowd, with better understanding of dealing numerous challenges
professionals face when out in the world, where threats of violence can happen. Alvarez stated that the “Stranger Danger” scenario so often taught to children is a flawed perspective. “A vast majority of the violent acts that happen to children come from people they know,” he stated. Teaching kids how to interact with others, he went on to explain, is proven as a much more effective tool for them as they grow. The SCA was pleased to have a person with the depth of experience Mr. Alvarez holds to discuss this type of topic. He was inclusive with the crowd, demonstrating a few scenarios, and providing clues for being prepared, from assessing a situation when you first arrive on the scene, to the most effective language to use to avert or minimize exposure. His presentation was very well received by the crowd.
