How amazing was CCNC this year? I can honestly say it was one of my favorite conferences. The new location was great and the events that were put on were simply amazing. I talked with so many people that told me how much they enjoyed it. The CCNC committee worked so hard on putting on the event and I would like to say thank you to all of them.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to be at the October luncheon meeting, but Jennifer Pinney, our VP, will be running it for me. Gregory Meath will be speaking on The Latest on Cyber Law. From all I’ve heard, his presentation is going to have some great information on guidelines for the use of social media in investigations.

I’m excited to announce that we also have our second annual Bowling Tournament coming up on November 8th! Last year we had a great event and I’m looking forward to it again. Please check the website and newsletter for more information on upcoming events.

The Latest on Cyber Law at October 11 EBCA Join The East Bay Claims Association as we resume our luncheon meeting schedule Wednesday, October 11, 2017. It is with great pleasure we welcome guest speaker, Mr. Gregory T. Meath, of the law firm Meath & Pereira, with the latest in Cyber Claims Law.

Gregory Meath is a partner in the law firm of Meath & Pereira in Stockton, CA. He attended Pacific McGeorge School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctorate as well as a Masters Degree in Transnational Business Law. Mr. Meath was born in Lodi, and attended public schools in Stockton including Washington, Burbank, and Nightingale elementary schools and Stagg High School. He earned a B.S. in Business at University of the Pacific.

Mr. Meath is a frequent speaker on topics of interest to business people including: assessing liability and risk for the small business; protecting yourself from identity theft; franchise laws; corporations and limited liability companies; trademarks, copyrights, domain names and patents for businesses; NAFTA and international trade agreements; and many other topics. He is an adjunct professor of law at Pacific McGeorge where he teaches Computer & Internet Law, and at Humphreys University Drivon School of Law where he teaches, Corporations, Intellectual Property and International Law. After having the opportunity to work in numerous locations throughout the country, and internationally, Mr. Meath’s practice is now dedicated to providing excellence in legal services to businesses in San Joaquin County to assure that local businesses have access to the legal and business resources needed to compete in today’s rapidly expanding and changing marketplace.

CCNC Provides Timely Focus on Dealing with CAT Claims

Over the years, the Claims Conference of Northern California has experienced its share of catastrophic events on a regional and national scale during the days of its annual event.

The most heinous of these events was 9/11/2001, when most folks arriving to attend the CCNC discovered what was happening in our nation.

On a more insurance-related instance, the massive PG&E gas explosion in San Bru2017 CCNC President, Marisa Sagil, VP Jennifer no happened during the conference at the Pinney at the Opening Night Festivities Hyatt in Sacramento. Numerous attendees and vendors alike had to leave hastily to go assist with that devastation.

It’s been suggested that part of the reason CCNC has experienced these types of catastrophes is because the conference is generally held around hurricane season for much of the country.

In a bit of a nod to all that, the 24th annual CCNC planning committee chose to produce a conference centered this year around catastrophe (CAT) claims.

Despite the fact that Hurricanes Harvey and Irma forced changes to the planned schedule of events, the training that came out of this year’s program could well serve claims people and support vendors alike for years to come.

Changing the time of year of the conference has been suggested and considered. The notion sounds simpler than the reality of it would likely be. For one thing, competition with other industry events who have established themselves throughout the years with their events held at other times of the year would be a tough nut to crack. Logistically, otherwise, there are other major hurdles that would have to be addressed. Still, there are those said to be considering options.

For this year, however, CAT work training was demonstrative.

From opening day keynote speaker, Jerry Bialick, to many of the programs offered over the two days of continuing ed classes, including use of drones, cyber technology and more, attendees walked away arguably with a good deal more working knowledge of dealing with these stressful and often overwhelming situations.

Nine Valley residents sentenced in $500,000 auto insurance fraud ring SACRAMENTO, CA - In one of the larger auto insurance fraud cases in the Sacramento region, Michael Charles Young, 30, of Sacramento, the leader of a large auto insurance fraud ring was sentenced recently to more than 10 years in state prison for bilking insurance companies out of an estimated $500,000 by filing fraudulent insurance claims.

Detectives are seeking three at-large suspects with outstanding warrants and asking for the public’s help finding them-Jazlyn Ladana Burrell, 20, of Vallejo; Lavina Louise Nunally, 26, and Desiree Patricia Vasquez, 22, both of Sacramento.

“California is ground zero for auto insurance fraud and every policyholder pays for these crimes through higher auto insurance rates,” says Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “This organized crime ring was brought down by the hard work of our detectives and the California Highway Patrol. Our investigative partnerships with law enforcement partners and district attorneys are critical to eradicating insurance fraud.”

An investigation by detectives with the California Department of Insurance and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) uncovered evidence Young and several co-conspirators filed multiple insurance claims totaling an estimated half a million dollars after crashing cars into each other or filing claims on vehicles with existing damage-known as paper collisions. The case is being prosecuted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

According to detectives, Young’s ring operated in the Sacramento area between 2014 and early 2016 filing dozens of claims ranging between $5,000 and $40,000 with a number of insurance companies.

“I am proud of the hard work by our investigators to help bring these criminals to justice,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “However, with some suspects still at large, we ask the public’s help to find and arrest them and conclude the case.”

In most cases, false identities were used to register and insure the vehicles used to file claims and accomplices were provided scripts to use when communicating with insurers. Some defendants allowed their identities to be used for compensation and then cashed checks issued in their names. The ring grew as friends and family members were recruited.

Young was arrested in April 2016, and charged with numerous felonies, including insurance fraud, possession of stolen vehicles, identity theft, and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

Melvia Ann Castro, 29, of Sacramento - Sentenced to 90 days in county jail and three years of probation.

Alyce Marie Peterson, 55, of Woodland - Sentenced to 30 days in county jail and three years of probation.

Cameron Nunally, 25, of Sacramento - Sentenced to 120 days in county jail and five years of probation.
