Happy February!

I hope everyone has had a nice successful start to the new year. It’s been pretty exciting in my household as we registered our son in kindergarten. He is so excited to go to school with his sister next year.

I would like to recognize longtime EBCA member and supporter, Bob Tucknott, on receiving the 25+ Award in Business at the annual ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors) Awards Gala in San Francisco recently. I was lucky enough to attend and was happy to see him receive it. Nicely done Bob. Thank you to all who came out to our 3rd Annual New Year Kick off Party January 11th. As usual, it was a great time. Thank you Amaya Fine and Liza Wisecarver for helping and for making it successful. And thank you again to all our sponsors who make all our events possible.

CCNC (Claims Conference of N. California) will be celebrating its 25th anniversary event in beautiful Lake Tahoe this year, August 28-30.

- The Cutting Edge of Source of Vehicle & Occupant Data The East Bay Claims Association is pleased to present Dr. James Mason, of ARCCA, as our guest speaker at our Valentine's Luncheon, Wednesday, February 14, 2018.

Dr. Mason has a Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from the California Institute of Technology. Among his credits, he also holds a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering and a Bachelor of Dr. James Mason, ARCCA Science in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley.

Does your vehicle have a navigation system that tracks location information…even when the navigation system is not in use? The years of digital information that vehicles are storing will certainly surprise you…and can help solve your case.

Vehicle Systems Forensics offers a new look into the actions of vehicle performance and driver interaction with the digital world inside of their vehicle. Vehicle infotainment and telematics systems store vast amounts of data such as recent destinations, SMS messages, call logs, favorite locations, contact lists, emails, pictures, audio, social media feeds, and, if equipped, the navigation history of everywhere the vehicle has been. Many systems can even store when and where a vehicle’s lights were turned on, when and where specific doors were opened and closed, when and where Bluetooth devices were disconnected (including the phone number of the Bluetooth device that was paired!), and odometer readings with date and time histories.

Dr. Mason is a Senior Engineer at ARCCA specializing in mechanical failures. He performs analyses of failed consumer and industrial products/ equipment and machinery design/failure, as well as metallurgical laboratory analyses. He also conducts engineering evaluations and provides analyses and opinions on the fracture and fatigue of metals, plastics and welds.

Dr. Mason has experience with medical devices and routinely conducts

investigations of failed consumer medical devices, including fracture/ fatigue crack analyses of orthopedic implants, plastics, and the complex interaction of materials with the human body.

Dr. Mason is a Licensed Professional Engineer in five states and is an Accident Investigator accredited in Crash Data Retrieval and Commercial Vehicle Event Data Recorders. He performs motor vehicle accident reconstructions and conducts passenger and commercial vehicle inspections, as well as site investigations to gather photographic evidence and document conditions.

Dr. Mason has a Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from the California Institute of Technology and both a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He has also received a Professional Science Master’s Degree in Biology from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

A nice-sized crowd turned out to Kick the New Year off in style, as the East Bay Claims Association held their 3rd annual Kick-Off Party Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Lazy Dog Restaurant in Concord.

"This is a really nice way to get things rolling in the new year," said one party-goer. It's always a fun event, stated another.

"We really appreciate everyone for coming out," said 2018 EBCA President, Jennifer Pinney. Ms. Pinney, along with other association leaders, including VP Amaya Fine, produced the event for the third straight year.

Christine explained all of her 26 page handout without the aid of her planned slide show. The power cord to her projector was left in another bag at the office.

Introduction: California Insurance Code 790.03 (h) sets forth sixteen claims settlement practices that are deemed to be unfair, and thus prohibited, when an insured either “knowingly committed” them on a single occasion or committed them with such a frequency so as to make them a part of a general business practice.

She detailed such mandates as the maximum time allowed to respond to any communication

during the entire claim process is fifteen calendar days. “You must acknowledge notice of claim, provide evidence of claim, begin investigation,” she explained.

Numerous questions and discussion with the claims people in the crowd, particularly on the issue of “proof of claim” were addressed.

Ms. Reed listened and explained her understanding of the rulings.

The 50/50 Raffle prize of $50 cash was won by our good friend from Felton Bob Hampson, Robert Hampson Insurance Adjusters.

Don Sams, founder of Sams & Associates, announces retirement and plans for other pursuits Loomis, CA – Don Sams, founder and president of Sams & Associates, has announced his retirement from Sams & Associates. After 42 years in the insurance industry, Don plans to pursue other entrepreneurial ventures.

Board Member, Liza Wisecarver, Brightleaf Cleaners Idea Valentines Day, seems like such a reasonable question, although I have always considered this holiday to be a made up Hallmark Holiday. But in true woman fashion, even if its somethings we pretend to not care much about, we still look to our loves ones to shower us with love and affection on this chosen day. After all is said and done with the regular day of February 14th, I love the beautiful velvety red roses my husband always brings home, that my little boys can’t get past the tuxedo box of chocolates. As my teenager gets older, I rattle her with a ton of questions about her possible valentine. My sweet toddler will bring treats in for her teachers, and my husband will say, “I love you as much as any other day!”

Complete ideal turnout for the holiday, and I may even get some shopping time out of it! Happy Valentines Day Everyone!

Membership Chair, Lynna Harrison, ANN I enjoy gorgeous cards from my family. Twenty years ago the ideal Valentine would involve wine and beaches, my significant other, and chocolate.

Board Member, Bryan Harrison I’m not a big fan of made-up “holidays”, but do enjoy smiles that come with flowers and/or chocolate. My wife is shuns such things, however, which some would say let’s me off the hook.

Instead, we do what we can to appreciate one another on a regular basis, doing things together, and for each other as much as we can. I don’t really understand placing a grading system on how much you love those special to your heart by spending untold amounts of money on them on one day, as pre-determined by someone else’s agenda. But, whatever floats your boat :-)

Tucknott Named FEWA President

Electrical Contractor and Expert Witness, Bob Tucknott, was installed as the President of the Forensic Expert Witness Association (FEWA) as of January l, 2018, for 2018-’19 - generally a two year commitment.

Qualification for this high industry honor does not come easily or quickly. One must be a professional member, and a Board Certified Forensic Litigation Consultant/ Expert.

“We have approximately 80 members in our chapter and the overall organization has approximateiy 2,000 experts scattered throughout the United States,” Mr. Tucknott told the Association News Network.

With some 50 years of experience in electrical construction, and 100+ cases as an expert Arbitrat, Mr. Tucknott is emminently qualified. His list of licenses include: CA/NV Electrical Contractor C-10, lic. #272838; A, General Engineering Contractor; B-1 license, General Building Contractor; Hazmat & Asbestos Removal; HIC Home Improvement Contractor #272838, #755258 He is a published contributor in the Manual of Procedures (construction): preparing change orders, change order summaries. He has also wrriten on Fire Damage Causation; injury/death (power wiring & electrical distribution).

Tucknott is a Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) - electrical. He helped write the original test for American Society of Professional Estimators. He is also a Senior Construction Arbitrator, American Arbitration Association.
