I am so overjoyed and proud of our organization and the people involved making it happen! Our third annual EBCA Bowling Tournament was, by far, the best yet. Thank you to everyone who
2018 EBCA President Jennifer Pinney
played a part in supporting it. Our sponsors came through in a big way, and so many of you turned out for a fun afternoon of bowling. Congratulations to our winners: Amaya, Gemma, Eric, Tyler (from five star restoration) and Rick (from coast construction). You all set a new standard! As we gear-up for our annual holiday luncheon party, being held this Wednesday, December 12, 2018 back at Zio Fraedo’s, I am hoping you all will represent in a big way again. With profits from the Bowling Tournament nearly doubling what we saw last year, the association has more to give our chosen charitable organizations: The Bay Area Crisis Nursery, and Shelter, Inc. Once again, we hope to have in attendance representatives from at least one, if not both, of our chosen charitable beneficiaries. Please sign-up on the web site for all these upcoming events now: www.EastBayClaims.org. continued page 4

Online homeowner insurance pricing tool helps residents find coverage
Convenient online tool provides price comparison and coverage information
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - As survivors of the Camp and Woolsey wildfires begin the long road to recovery from the recent devastating wildfires that have so far tragically killed 84 people and destroyed more than 12,000 homes, other homeowners in wildfire areas may find themselves shopping for coverage when rates increase or they receive non-renewal notices, as some insurers limit their underwriting. To help consumers shop for the most coverage at the best price, the department has a convenient, easy-to-use online price comparison tool available. The homeowner insurance comparison tool is designed to take some of the guesswork out of shopping for insurance by allowing consumers to quickly and easily make comparisons of rates from both national and local insurance companies. “Finding the best coverage for your needs starts by being well informed,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “As the number and severity of wildfires grows and some insurers limit their underwriting, it is important for consumers to shop around for the most coverage they can afford and this online tool provides a wealth of information to help them in that search.”
While this tool does not provide actual premium quotes, it does provide each company’s average premium and a toll-free number and website address for consumers to ask questions about available discounts or credits and receive an actual premium quote. The tool also includes a link to the specific company’s performance based on the consumer complaint study. Consumers enter their county and nearest city, type and amount of coverage, and age of the home to compare estimated premiums. Homeowners should compare prices for various insurers along with the coverage features, limits, and exclusions. The department’s Consumer Services team is also available toll-free at 800-927-HELP to assist consumers with any questions regarding their claims, coverage, or search for insurance coverage. The Price Comparison Tool may be found at: https://interactive.web.insurance. ca.gov/apex_extprd/f?p=111:20

Taking It To A New Level at Third Annual EBCA Bowling Tourney By Bryan Harrison
The East Bay Claims Association’s third annual Bowling Tournament, held Wednesday, November 14, 2018, saw a fairly dramatic up-tick in participation over each of the first two years. A full 13 lanes, featuring some 50-plus bowlers, was nearly double last year’s showing.
The nature of this industry can often leave participation in events such as this vulnerable to various disasters and situations that may be at hand, and to which many involved must respond. Despite the Camp Fire in Butte County wrecking havoc, folks still managed to turn out for a fun afternoon, as well as a good cause. EBCA sponsored a food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Counties, and net proceeds from the event are being directed into the EBCA Charitable fund, which assists the group with contributing to the year’s chosen charities. Coming out on top at this year’s tournament was the team sponsored by Alliance Environmental Group and RegasGroup Environmental Consulting. Regardless of any competition, the event was by far the most well-attended bowling tourney to date, and arguably effectively cemented its continuation into the foreseeable future.

Insurance commissioner calls on industry to ease inventory requirement for 2018 wildfire survivors SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Due to the staggering losses suffered by thousands of residents from the 2018 wildfires, Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones has asked insurers to assist overwhelmed wildfire survivors by voluntarily easing detailed personal property home inventory requirements and, following the lead of other insurers, providing at least 75 percent and up to 100 percent of contents (personal property) coverage limits without the submission of a detailed inventory. The notice issued October 4, 2018, acknowledges that the department is aware of and applauds the efforts of certain insurers that have already gone above and beyond the Voluntary Expedited Claims Handling Procedures and have made significant efforts to assist and accommodate survivors by offering, in some cases, up to 100 percent contents limits payment without a personal property inventory. However, due to the massive scale of these wildfires, Jones is requesting all other property insurers follow suit by providing similar accommodations. He also asked insurers to notify the department by October 31, 2018 whether they will comply and what percentage they will provide. Those insurers offering an amount less than 100 percent
should allow policyholders the ability to recover additional benefits, if the policyholder subsequently completes a full inventory. “The Carr and Mendocino Complex fires rank among the most destructive wildfires in California’s history,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, even before the Butte County Camp Fire. “Entire communities were decimated, with residents suffering staggering losses of not only property, but tragically loss of life and injuries. I’m asking property insurers to ease the burden on traumatized survivors by voluntarily providing at least 75 percent of contents coverage without the onerous requirement of a detailed home inventory, so survivors may get on with patching their lives back together.” The commissioner’s request applies to all insured homes that suffered a total loss, unless the insurer has reason to believe the home was not furnished. The department advises policyholders already working with a claims adjuster to develop a settlement plan that best serves their needs, which may include taking the time to complete a personal property home inventory.

Claims Association takes lead with Camp Fire Relief Fund-raising effort Relief efforts to help the tens of thousands of victims of the Butte County Camp Fire have been dramatic and sweeping, with people and organizations reacting and assisting in so many ways. Clothing and immediate survival needs that were provided have gone a long way toward helping to ease the initial shock of the situation, as thousands found themselves instantly homeless. There comes a Donations may be made through point when what the Mid-Valley Claims Association site is most helpful are financial contributions. With that thought in mind, the Mid-Valley Claims Association set about to determine the best means to not only raise money, but to make sure that all monies raised are put to actual use to help people move forward. “After looking into numerous quality outlets, we decided to funnel funds through the Disaster Relief Fund Corporation a 501c(3) non-profit established by Rotary Int’l District 5220 in the central valley,” stated MVCA Secretary, Liza Wisecarver. “100% of funds will be forwarded through the Rotary District 5220 Disaster Relief Fund, to be administered by Paradise Rotary President Brian Gray and Past District Gov Pam Gray,” stated the district announcement. Donations may be made through the Mid-Valley Claims Association site, at: www.MidValleyClaims.org/events/2018/1812.html. Donations by cash or check may be brought to the MVCA Holiday Pizza Party Luncheon, being held Friday, December 14, 2018 at Michael’s New York Style Pizza Cafe: 2300 West Alpine Avenue, Stockton, CA. Check-in at 11:30, lunch party starts at noon. Two days prior, Wednesday, December 12, 2018, The East Bay Claims Association is holding their Holiday luncheon festivities at Zio Fraedo’s Restaurant, 611 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill. This event includes association charitable donations to The Bay Area Crisis Nursery and Shelter, Inc., as well as a TOY DRIVE for kids at the Crisis Nursery. Sign-up at: www.EastBayClaims.org Thursday, Wednesday, 13, 2018, the Sacramento Claims Association is also holding their annual Charitable Giving Luncheon. This year’s event is being held at a special venue, The Firehouse, in Old Sac. Go to: www.SacramentoClaims.org to sign up. During this time of Holiday Spirit and giving, and throughout the coming year, assistance will continue to be needed by many affect by this and other wild fires. As professionals tasked with assisting in the rebuilding, many in the claims industry are already going the extra mile to do what they can for their insureds, as well as others in need. Together, we can bring our greater community back to whole. Warmest Holiday Wishes,
