February is the month of love, and it’s even more special because I’ll be turning the big 36 in a couple of weeks. I’m excited to take my kids to the snow on a mini birthday vacation.

2018-’19 EBCA President Jennifer Pinney

Thank you so much to everyone who came to our 4th Annual New Year Kick Off Party! I’d also like to thank our sponsors for helping to make that night a success! It’s always a good time with great friends, food and yummy drinks. As you all know, we have decided as a board not to have a golf tournament this year. One of the reasons being is we are throwing our support to the Mid Valley Claims Association. Bryan Harrison, the President, and the rest of the board, is doing an amazing job revamping this association. We are asking that anyone who participated in our golf tournament, to please show them some support and participate or attend their golf tournament this year. You can reach out to Eric Gacutan or Liza Wisecarver with any questions or to sign up. Please join us this Wednesday, February 13, 2019 for the next EBCA Luncheon. We are pleased to welcome Mr. Ron Riisager, of Velocity Solar. Mr. Riisager will address continued page 4

Getting To Know Your EBCA Leaders

Kathleen Taylor -

Longtime EBCA Board member and advocate comes back to serve Leadership Profile by Lynna Harrison, with Bryan Harrison

K

athleen Taylor has a long-running history serving the East Bay Claims Association. Working in Business Development for Paul Davis Restoration for nine years, Kathleen dedicated countless hours toward the betterment of the association.

Born in Burbank, California, Kathleen was the youngest of six children. She was raised in neighboring Glendale. She moved to northern California and attended college in Sonoma County. That is where she met her husband, Mark. Kathleen and Mark Taylor have now been married for 36 years. They have four children and three grandchildren. Kathleen’s ninety year old mother now lives with them, in their home in Brentwood. Early on, Kathleen was a stay at home Mom for twenty years. She then went to work for a Restoration company, spending nine years with Paul Davis Restoration. She “retired” from Paul Davis last year. Retirement, as such, was short-lived, however. She Joined Velocity Solar in the fall of 2018, heading up the Business Development and Sales of Velocity Solar in the Bay Area, specializing in residential, new home construction and businesses. She and Mark also do work as real estate investors. “We flip houses,” she said. Of all her accomplishments, Kathleen said her four Children and three Grands represent the greatest.

Her four kids now all live in Utah. So Kathleen, and her “best friend and husband, Mark”, go to visit them on a monthly basis. Travel and food are her passions, she said. “We love cruises, and have been on several. Cruises give you the benefit of seeing several destinations,” she explained. “Our favorite place in the whole world is the island of St. Martin, in the Caribbean. We have been there over a dozen times. In fact, we named the neighborhood we developed ‘St. Martin Place’. Lastly, we are currently planning a trip to Europe with all of our children this April. Family and Travel is our. “Why”,” she said with her infectious smile. With her re-emergence and new position with Velocity, Kathleen has returned to continue serving on the EBCA Board. She has been primarily involved in planning for speakers, topics and events at EBCA luncheon meetings. “Kathleen has been a huge part of the EBCA success,” stated EBCA President, Jennifer Pinney. “She is someone who gives her time, and is the one who handles all of our speakers. She is someone who I have personally looked up to and has been a mentor to me. Thank you, Kathleen, for all that you have done, and for just being you.”

EBCA Annual Fair Claims Practices Regs Recertification at January 9, 2019 luncheon By Bryan Harrison

The East Bay Claims Association had the pleasure of hearing once again from Ms. Christine Reed, shareholder at the law offices of Low Ball and Lynch, at the January 9, 2019 luncheon meeting. Ms. Reed presented the annually mandated recertification of the “Fair Claims Settlement Practices Act” California Department of Insurance regulations. The re-certification seminar was of great benefit even to the representatives in the room who work as support in the claims process. EBCA Treasurer, John Ehlert, a Structural Engineer, was among those who stated that, specifically to Ms. Reed near the end of her presentation. Christine emphasized the importance of always documenting every detail, and maintaining communication with insureds within the mandated time frames to respond, throughout the entire claim process. Adjusters must respond “within 15 calendar days” of receipt of notice of claim. Penalties for non-compliance can be severe, especially if seen as a standard business practice, as opposed to a one-time infraction. Long time East Bay Claims member, Lisa Dowrelio, who has worked extensively with Ms. Reed and her firm, interjected with some of her hands-on experience with meeting the regulations. “It’s a matter of making it your practice,” she said.

Ringing In The New Year East Bay Style at January 10, 2019 Kick-Off Party By Bryan Harrison

A good-sized and lively crowd turned out for the fourth annual East Bay Claims Association KickOff Party January 10, 2019. Held back on the beautifully covered patio at Lazy Dog Restaurant in the Willows, the event had an electrical vibe going on, as the rain fell lightly most of the evening outside. A huge fire pit in the center of the large room made for a friendly environment for folks of all stripes within the industry gathered near and around for conversation and good cheer. Ample food offerings and dessert provided what amounted to a full meal for most. Raffle prizes pulled everyone in as President Jennifer Pinney and her officers made it all so lively. As the crowd began to thin a bit, some fun and a bit of silliness ensued. All in all, everyone had a great time, and the event successfully brought members and guests out to engage in their East Bay Claims association on a light level.
