Riding In The Wake of EBCA BINGO!
April, 2019 President’s Message By Jennifer Pinney, 2018-’19 EBCA President APRIL 2019
VOLUME XXVII . NUMBER IV
EBCA Mission Statement:
The East Bay Claims Association is a charitable and educational organization that is dedicated to the betterment of Insurance Claims Professionals, through: continuing education; industry knowledge and contacts; and a strong commitment to integrity and respect in networking. In order to accomplish this mission, the Association provides a forum and network for insurance claims professionals to meet and share information. This forum and fundraising events held by the group also help to connect insurance claims professionals in local communities and expands public awareness of the work performed by insurance claims professionals.
Happy spring everyone. It’s time for fresh air, sunshine, and beautiful flowers. Pretty soon it will also be time for some Easter egg hunts for the littles. I guess it’s also time for me to start my spring cleaning, which is never a fun time.
2018-’19 EBCA President Jennifer Pinney
I had an absolute blast at our second annual St. Patty’s Day Bingo Luncheon last month. It is always hilarious to see how intense it gets. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you so much to everyone who donated prizes, and everyone for coming. I’m already looking forward to next years. As you all know, in lieu of the golf tournament this year, we have decided to take-in a baseball game. The game is on Wednesday July 17th. It is the Oakland A’s vs the Seattle Mariners. We will be treated to special seating in the right field ‘Stomping Ground’, with food and space to move about. We’ve priced this as equitably as we can, and will be looking for sponsors to help make it a memorable afternoon. This is going to be a great event! Join us in welcoming Mr. Kurt Ahlich, PE, of ARCCA as our next luncheon guest speaker, Wednesday, April 10th. continued page 4

Getting To Know Your Leaders EBCA Membership Chair, Lynna Harrison The light of positivity
EBCA Membership Chair, Lynna Harrison
The East Bay Claims Association has long had the pleasure of the active involvement of board member and Membership Chair, Lynna Harrison, of Association News Network.
Now semi-retired, Lynna continues her work in Customer Support for the communications firm, dedicated to the betterment of insurance claims associations in Northern California, as well as dedication to the EBCA. Her attachment to the insurance industry runs deep. From her early married days to the father of her three children, Lynna learned much about Bodily Injury Insurance claims and the adjusting process from Richard “Dick” B. Harrison. Mr. Harrison worked for many years for State Farm Insurance, as well as other positions in the industry. Her direct experience with insurance has ranged from insurance agent and claims adjuster, as well as serving in the capacity of Office Manager of a law firm for five years. Lynna later achieved her Real Estate Agent license, and worked for ten years in the Santa Cruz area market, developing a successful career there. “My greatest job,” she tells us, “has been working for my incredibly talented son, Bryan, since 2010.” Lynna Jean Iskra was born in Pueblo, Colorado on January 20, 1938. Her family moved to Denver when she was four years old, including her brother - five and a half years older, and Mom and Dad. “Dad’s job brought us to California when I was seven,” she explains. “We lived in Montclair,” moving to East Oakland when she was in the third grade. Between her dad’s job with Safeway Corporate and her parents’ rocky relationship, Lynna and her brother, John Jr. “Sonny”, experienced moving quite a bit. Sonny went to UC Berkeley, while Lynna and her mom moved to New Jersey when she was 12. Reconciliation of her parents for a time brought her back to Denver when she was 14, she shares. Moving about as much as she did forced her to learn to build friendships, several
of which she has continued to embrace over the years. At the same time, she arguably learned to run from problems, becoming what she describes as being “just a bit of a Gypsy,”. Lynna graduated from West High School in Denver, and received a scholarship to Colorado Womens College. But, she met Dick Harrison through her close school friend, Shirley (Dick’s cousin), when he was visiting from Alabama in 1955. She and Dick Harrison hit it off immediately. They were engaged to be married when she was just 16, and going to college was not to be. Lynna went to work for Mountain States Telephone Company, as an Operator, in 1956. “Richard Bryan Harrison and I married when I was eighteen,” that same year, she says. “We left the snow in Denver in 1958 and moved close to my brother in Berkeley, in our brand new 1957 Ford convertible,” she continues. “Our daughter, Vicky, was born September 20, 1958, and Bryan on July 18, 1960, both at Alta Bates Hospital, in Berkeley.” By then, the couple had moved to the nearby suburb of San Pablo, where they were able to buy their first new house. They moved to a bigger house in Concord July 4, 1964, while Lynna was nearly 8 months pregnant. Their third child, Diane, was born August 18, 1964, at Mt. Diablo Hospital, in Concord. Dick went to work for State Farm Insurance, initially as an agent before becoming an Adjuster in 1963, and Lynna was expected to be a stay-at-home mom, which, for the most part, she says she loved. In late 1968, “we bought our third new home, this one in Walnut Creek. We would go visit the home as it was being built every weekend before being able to finally move-in in the Spring of 1969. There, they made fast-friends with new neighbors, as well as strengthening bonds with some close friends they’d known back at their first home in San Pablo, who had also moved to the Ygnacio Valley side of Walnut Creek. Yet, there were troubles in the marriage. Lynna and Dick split up at the end Continued page 9

2nd Annual EBCA Bingo Extravaganza Provides Fun Change of Pace By Bryan Harrison
The March 13, 2019 East Bay Claims Association luncheon meeting featured the second annual Bingo Extravaganza, much to the delight of members and guests in attendance. EBCA President, Jennifer Pinney, and Association Treasurer, John Ehlert, led a lightening speed Bingo calling that kept everyone laser focused on the four Bingo boards each attendee received. As soon as folks were done eating round and round of Bingo games were orchestrated, with winners receiving door prizes donated by many who attended. “We had so many prizes we had to keep things moving along,” President Pinney stated. Although one table seemed to dominate the Bingos, every table in the room had winners.

Advisory Board in March 2012. Nick Roxborough is the Co-Managing Partner of Los Angeles based law firm of Roxborough, Pomerance, Nye & Adreani, LLP. Over three decades, Mr. Roxborough has obtained numerous trial and appellate decisions concerning the insurance industry. He was first appointed to the COIN Advisory Board in March 2013. Mitch Steiger is the Legislative Advocate for the California Labor Federation, representing trade union interests to statewide officials and state legislators. He was first appointed to
the WCIRB Governing Committee in April 2011. About COIN and the WCIRB
Established in 1996, the California Organized Investment Network (COIN) guides insurers on making safe and sound investments that yield environmental benefits throughout California and social and economic benefits within the state’s underserved communities. The COIN Advisory Board—consisting of the Insurance Commissioner and several leaders in insurance, economic development, impact investments, and consumer advocacy—provides focus and guidance to the Commissioner and COIN to meet its mission.
The Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) is a private organization licensed by the Department of Insurance for the purpose of collecting, analyzing and compiling rating data, funding comes from assessments of the insurer members. All workers’ compensation insurance companies in California are required by law to be members of the bureau. The WCIRB Governing Committee sets policy, oversees management of the affairs of the WCIRB, and oversees all issues involving pure premium rates, classifications, rating plans, rating systems, manual rules and policy, and endorsement forms.

of 1974, with their divorce becoming final in 1976. Having been out of the workforce for some 19 years at that point, Lynna worked numerous jobs to make ends meet. She managed the challenges she faced remarkably well, learning and growing to build a better life for herself and her family. As the kids grew and found their way, she moved to the Sacramento area, near where her brother, John, had settled. In 1987, she met Fred Bujack, a talented artist and businessman, at a dance social. The two became inseparable for a time, and married in 1989. By the early ‘90s, they moved to Florida, to be nearer to Fred’s ailing mother. Ultimately for Lynna, life in the Sunshine State wasn’t working out so well, and she moved back home to California. By that time, her son, Bryan, had ventured into his own Publishing, Print Brokering and Graphic Design business, Harrison Promotional Services, and was in need of sales support and customer assistance. Lynna couldn’t have returned at a better time to help the young business survive through numerous growing pains. Several years later, Fred moved back to California, settling in the Santa Cruz area. He and Lynna were able to rekindle their original spark, ultimately living together there. Two of her closest girl friends lived in the area, as well, so it was a great move for her. Ultimately, however, she decided life on her own was what she needed, and she split from Fred. She got her real estate license in 1999 and began selling primarily manufactured homes in and around Santa Cruz, and was able to purchase her first home of her own in 2001. Like most folks in Real Estate, the market crash that began in 2007 took her by surprise.
She was surviving through the Great Recession, until, in 2009, she was diagnosed with a fairly rare form of cancer, Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma. She had a tumor lodged behind her nose. Surgery was not an option, but aggressive chemo and radiation successfully destroyed the tumor. Following a five week stay in the hospital, she began a long road to recovery. “I had no idea how extreme the treatment was going to be,” she admits. “But I’m still alive!” she states emphatically. Always the positive light, Lynna persevered through the devastation of that experience, sold her home, and moved near her daughter, Vicky, in Pleasant Hill, retiring from Real Estate. It was at that time that she began her next career, renewing her sales and customer service role with Bryan’s business, now Association News Network. She has been a member of not only the EBCA, but Sacramento Claims Association, Mid-Valley Claims, Central Coast Claims, and Modesto Claims Associations. She has overseen as many as 100 advertising accounts, helping the firm to keep billings on track, and customers satisfied. She has served as the Membership Chair for EBCA going on four years now. “I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s two years ago,” she explains. While the condition has been pretty slow to progress, in 2018, she decided to move-in full time with Vicky and her husband, Walter, just a couple of miles from her apartment in Pleasant Hill. “I am extremely happy living with my generous and loving daughter, son in law and family in Pleasant Hill,” she shares. Walter, and sometimes Vicky, even join her in her Bridge Clubs when they can.
She continues to live an active lifestyle, playing Bridge in two, sometimes three, regular groups. She and Vicky were involved together in a weekly dance class for several years, as well. “I believe whatever you speak will come to pass,” she says. “Be happy and positive and treat others as you would like to be treated,” is her mantra. “I have a glorious family. Three children and spouses; eight biological grandchildren; four step-grands; one great grandson; and three step-great grandchildren. “I have always loved dancing and raising my darling children,” she adds. “I have had the good fortune of traveling across the country many times with my second husband, Fred. We only missed seeing about seven of our beautiful United States. We also went to Costa Rica, Hawaii, plus sailing in the Caribbean together.”
Of her love for Bridge, she explains: “Dick and I played bridge when the kids were little, and I am now obsessed with playing bridge again when ever possible.” In her semi-retirement, Lynna continues to focus on working with the East Bay Claims Association, and says she is the envy of her numerous friends. “They are jealous of me getting to hang out with so many young people on a regular basis.” Known as “Munsay”, most affectionately by her kids, and many of Bryan’s high school buds, Lynna has always been the light of positivity to help others find their way. She says loves seeing the recent resurgence of the EBCA, with so many young professionals taking leadership roles with the organization, and does all she can to help promote it.
