MH High School Bangs The Drum All Day In Hosting NorCal Percussion Alliance Competition By Bryan Harrison
The Mountain House High School Music Department played host for the Northern California Percussion Alliance's a Percussion Competition March 14, 2015; an honor not normally granted a first-year program. Welcoming more than 1,000 people representing percussion ensembles from 25 different schools and organizations, along with their friends and families, this was a "world class" level event, and, by all counts, the organizers from MHHS were poised and ready to take it on..
"We kept hearing all over from the association staff and the other bands that they absolutely couldn't believe we were a first year program," stated an excited Devon Bolla, president of the boosters club. "With the quality of everything... the food spread, all of it. They were impressed." "This event brought percussion ensembles from throughout the country to our community to compete at a world class level," stated Music and performing arts director Troy Rexelle. Schools from distances as far as Glencoe, Oregon made the trek to Mountain House.
The event ran all day long, from 10:00 AM until well after 7pm, capped by an awards ceremony that followed a solid finale performance from the Santa Clara Vanguard, an internationally competitive group from Drum Corps International that competes at the highs level of competition.
"It has been pretty spectacular to be able to put this on. And the kids were saying community members were coming out and saying how great it was," Rexelle stated at the end of the day. "I'm really happy with how things turned out today," he added. "Couldn't have asked for better."
Rexelle has almost single-handedly taken an upstart group of musicians at the beginning of this school year and shaped them into a competitive and very worthy group of dedicated musicians. A resident of MH, Rexelle remains humble of his accomplishments, pointing consistently to the work put in my the students and their parents. Parents acknowledge regularly that Rexelle pushes the kids pretty hard, as well, and holds high expectations of them.
"I wanted to thank everyone for all of the wonderful community support that we received at the Northern California Percussion Alliance competition we hosted continued page 2

In addition to old favorites, new trucks are joining the fleet, including some owned by Mountain House residents like Ohana Shaved Ice and Italian Ice. Restaurant Nights is held the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of every month. Trucks rotate to offer a variety of meals during the local event, located at Central Park, 25 Main Street.

"The Northern California Percussion Alliance is one of the most respected judging associations in California and to be chosen to host as a first year school is an amazing accomplishment," Rexelle added.
