The Shrew Gets Tamed at Shakespeare In The Park - MH Style

An amazing amount of time, work, endless rehearsals, and commitment their craft all paid off with the Mountain House Actors Guild's 2nd annual Shakespeare In The Park.

Two performances, held July 9th and 10th 2016 at the bowl in the Mountain House Central Park, Director Scott Snyder brought his vision to life in most convincing fashion.

The Shakespeare comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, starring Eric Simmonds in the role of Petruchio, suitor to "the shrew", Kate), and Amber Hill, as Kate, herself, featured lots of physical (and often grueling) comedic acting.

The humor of the play came through even for those (most of us) who struggle comprehending the old-English language of Shakespeare.

Kudos to the entire cast and crew who made this happen. Producer, Jennifer Snyder (and Scott's wife), did her part in seeing an intense project and stressful schedule through to completion.

The duo, along with all their team, made the whole thing look effortless.

Notable performances included Anthony Lugo, who played both Baptisa - Father to Kate and her beautiful little sister, Bianca - and a brief role as one of Petruchio’s Servants. The part of Baptista played an integral part throughout.

President Lucid, who made the announcement known to MH Matters, said "Steve has been a steward of Mountain House with an eye for detail and an understanding of the secondary and tertiary effects of our decisions on the BOD."

Gutierrez was re-elected to a four-year term in the 2014 general election. The term for his replacement is yet to be determined, President Lucid said July 13th.

A new board member to serve the remainder of his term could potentially be made, or a more temporary appointment for a replacement to his seat on the board with an open election for a two-year seat in November may be another option.

The next CSD Board meeting is set for August 18th, at which time they will likely move forward with the most appropriate path.

Interested candidates for the role were pretty well established with the departure of Jim Lamb from the board just a couple of months ago.

"We know we have interested and qualified people for the position," Lucid said. There is a standard process to pursue in these types of instances that will be followed.

Gutierrez' leadership will be missed by the board, and the community. He has been the longtime Chair of the Public Safety Committee and was just recently selected to head-up the Incorporation Committee, a position previously held by Mr. Lamb.

"We wish him all the best in his new venture," Lucid stated. "He was a mentor to me," he added.

The official final results are in from the June 7, 2016 General Election as certified for San Joaquin County. The local Measure L bond initiative passed with more than 62% of the vote. A total of 2,399 votes were cast here in Mountain House. The Measure was approved 1,489 for to 910 against. Statistically, a huge margin of victory.

The board of directors voted at the June 8th board meeting to repeal the resolution that resulted in going to 2 days a week watering. The community is now authorized to resume three day per week outdoor irrigation between the hours of 9pm to 6am Please follow the schedule outlined below.

We are experiencing warm weather and fewer rain days and we would like to remind all residents of the mandatory 3 days per week schedule. The State is reviewing data from the seasonal snowpack, reservoir levels and aquifer depletion and there are slight chances it may modify the restrictions, but until then all restrictions are still in place and must be followed.

Commercial Childcare Facility In the Works for Hansen Village

A newly announced commercial development project within Mountain House has taken a big step with the San Joaquin County Community Development Department - Development Services Division. The county released an Appliciation Referral Public Hearing announcement on June 17, 2016 regarding a new commercial childcare facility being proposed to be built in Hansen Village of Mountain House (aka “Neighborhood C”).

The new childcare facility, as shown in the accompanying map depiction, will occupy roughly a rectangular block of at least 1.0 gross acre of land across the street from the site designated for Hansen School.

The facility, located at the corner of Vecindad and Bonner Dr., will include a parking lot consisting of 31 parking spaces, with entrances on Vencidad and the adjacent parallel block of Olsen Way.

The childcare tentative map shows separate spaces within its structure to accommodate infants, toddlers, preschool, pre-k, and school age children. Additionally, a reception/office area and staff/kitchen space fill-out the building useage. There is also a 7,800 square foot outside play area proposed, to be surrounded by green-shaded chain link fencing.

This notice for the plan, as submitted by Mike Souza, serves to announce a Master Plan

amendment in order to accommodate this type of facility, as opposed to development that might include retail use.

The Application Referral allows for a “C-N (Neighborhood Commercial)” to include only a childcare center, without any additional retail sales and/or services land uses.

Mountain House Independence Day Parade

The 11th annual Mountain House Independence Day Parade went off seamlessly, July 4, 2016. As residents lined the street along Central Parkway, they cheered as the community parade went by. CSD planners returned to the traditional route, beginning at Main Street moving southward to Heritage, then circling back to Central Park. Folks then gathered inside the park, where they were greeted by live music, food vendors, and community groups for a festive afternoon.

Mountain House Independence Day Celebration

On the heals of the 11th annual Mountain House Independence Day Parade, the crowd moseyed into Central Park to the sites and sounds of a festival. Bounce house and water rides, food and misc. other vendors, and a live band all created the crowd July 4, 2016.

The Mountain House Mothers’ Club - the first and original club in town - held a pie judging contest, and folks enjoyed the sounds and danced to their hearts’ content to the live sounds of both Country Crush and headliner, Threshold.

Kongo Dance Instruction Comes to Town

In most other areas of the world the dancer’s body moves as a whole throughout the dance. In African dance, the different centers of the dancer's body creates complex movements that move in conjunction with one another.

Angela Titus, a MH resident who has worked previously as a dance instructor with local kids, coordinated with Angel Lamb, of the Mountain House Community Services District, to make these lessons possible. The dance instructor, Bibene - also known as Byb (Beb) - is a professionally trained dancer. He dances with the Kiandana Dance Theater in San Francisco.

In Africa, I was told, dance is traditionally a means of marking the experiences of life, encouraging abundant crops, and healing the sick soul and body. It is also done purely for enjoyment.

Kongo Dance is a form of African Dance which not only provides a great cardio workout, but also gives students a chance to explore something new. Dancers learn about a different culture, get to experience the feel of the rhythm, “and be happy inside the music," Angela explains.

Anyone up for a good dance workout may join these classes, she explained. "Music is color-blind, and we would like an assortment of colors to join us" she said.

I asked Ms. Titus how she got involved with the classes

"I've always had a passion for sports and dance,” she replied. “Angel Lamb contacted me a few years ago, as she was putting together programs for the Mountain House Parks and Recreation Department.

I then started teaching a Recreation Hip Hop Class for kids. After doing Hip-Hop Dance for a couple of summers, I thought it would be super cool to try Kongo Dance (African Dance Style from Congo),” she explained.

“My friend, and fellow Mountain House resident, Maame Alice Yelbert-Sai, introduced me to Bibene. Bibene has an awesome personality and has been really patient with the first time Kongo dancers.

“The history of African Dance is deep, and each dance tells a story. The dances for this class are uplifting and happy,” she further explained. “The pieces that we will learn are energetic and joyful. If you love dance, you will love this!!”

I loved watching this class and would have joined in the fun and rhythm if it wasn't for a foot and ankle issue that I'm having. But, let me tell you, these dances are energetic and fun!

African dance embodies athleticism and a graceful beauty flowing with rhythm. One of the main differences between African dance and dances from other parts of the world is that African dance is considered “polycentric”. This means that the dancer’s body is not treated as one single central unit. Instead, it is divided into several centers, or segmented areas, of movement, with each area being able to move to different rhythms within the music.

Mindset Matters

A new and different type of dance class is now being offered at Central Park in Mountain House, in the form of Kongo Dance Lessons. A type of African Dance, these classes are being held at the basketball court near the bowl in Central Park every Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. for a mere $5 per class.

This eight week program started July 11, 2016, and will run through August 29th.

Examples of the different centers of a dancer’s body include: shoulder, arms, chest, pelvis and legs.

African music and dance in its essence communicates concepts of life on an elevated level; dance, in many African cultures, is a universal, transcendent language.

Historically, people throughout the continent of Africa achieve direct communication between themselves and their gods through ritual music and dance, including many with masks. Dances are frequently performed/ learned in circles.

Circle formations are inclusive, Angela explained, and do not point out one individual as more important than others.

Dance and music are important to the entire community, young and old, male and female.

It has been proven time and time again that one’s mindset essentially determines what kind of life they lead. A positive mindset generally results in positive outcomes, and

vice versa. Of course, a positive mindset is important, but what is also important is a strong mindset. A positive mindset is one that remains optimistic through life’s trials, but a strong mindset is one that is both optimistic and resilient, but that’s not all. There are six traits of a person with a strong mindset.

First: be in the moment. Thinking, or overthinking, of the past or the future does not change either one of those.

It only takes away from the moment that is. Being in the moment eliminates distractions from the now, and ultimately leads to increased focus and concentration.

Second: connect inner purpose with outer effort. There is no point in doing something if your heart is not in it. Act with all that you’ve got, and only then will the results be evident.

Third: accept and embrace challenges.

If you are not faced with challenges, you are not taking risks. If you aren’t taking risks, you aren’t doing anything new. If you aren’t doing anything new, you aren’t doing anything that will help you progress.

Fourth: remain positive through setbacks. With challenges and new tasks, setbacks are almost guaranteed, but they should hold you back or discourage you.

They are life’s way of giving you a lesson, and then a second chance.

As Thomas Edison said, “I haven’t failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Fifth: channel anger effectively. Anger can be your best friend, or your worst enemy, but it all depends on how you deal with it. Whether you want to let your anger overpower you, or you want to overpower your anger, that is a choice only you can make.

Sixth: Lastly, have a willingness and drive to help others. No one has ever been successful totally on their own.

People are remembered and recognized not for what they do for themselves, but what they do for others despite having the option to choose otherwise.

Ultimately, having these six characteristics, and being optimistic will together become your formula for success. Remember: your mindset matters, and only you can decide what it’s going to be.

Hey guys! How’s your day going? I hope it’s well! Today I wanted to talk to you about dogsitting.

I recently volunteered to watch my best friend’s dog. I’ve never watched or taken care of anybody’s dog and I don’t have one.

I never had any experience. The only thing was that I’ve known the dog since my best friend first got him and I know what he eats.

Watching him was an awesome thing to do.

While I’m writing this I am watching him.

I love watching him and it’s an awesome experience! This tests my responsibility and patience. So far, I’ve been doing okay.

At first it was a little challenging.

The first time, I had trouble putting his leash on, but then I got it. The dog is between the age of 9 and 10. So, he’s pretty simple to take care of.

For some reason I wanted to challenge myself and I took him on a lot of walks that he actually started to run on his walks. I was excited because that showed he got exercise and he was able to build up his stamina.

My best friend told me at around 7 in the evening that he would want to play with one of his toys.

She said just play fetch with him 2-3 times and he’s get exhausted. I did that and he did get exhausted. Now, he’s getting more energy and I have to throw his toy across 5-10 times!

I watched from the middle to the end of June. He seemed to develop more energy and began eating a lot better too!

I’m really happy about this because I think he’s doing good. Him getting exercise is the best thing and I’m really excited I’m going to be able to tell my best friend that.

I bet you’re wondering what the dog’s name is. His name is Patches and his breed is a Shih-Tzu. He’s a great dog and I love him so much!

Mountain House Golf Club Travels to Angel’s Camp for June “Major”

“Rotary Serving Humanity” Theme For The Year The Tracy Sunrise Rotary Satellite Club at Mountain House invites all residents to come learn about this highly respected and trusted service organization.

Meetings are held the second and fourth Fridays of each month, from 9am-10am at the Firehouse Community Meeting Room.

The Mountain House Golf Club took their monthly tournament on the road Sunday, June 26, 2016, with a “Major” tournament at Greenhorn Golf Club in Angel’s Camp.

Lowest Net Winner was Greg Holtz, with Gerard Nazareno taking the Closest To The Pin award.

Can’t make weekday morning meetings?

That’s ok. The Mountain House satellite club, in conjunction with our parent club, the Tracy Sunrise Rotary, is working toward building the structure to allow for what is known as an “E-Club”. Members will be able to access podcasts videos of meetings, and eventually log-in and attend virtually in real-time.

Tournaments are generally held the last Sunday of the month at various courses nearby to Mountain House. “We move it around to keep things interesting and fresh,” said league organizer, Andy Su. To register, you are asked to please Email andy@mhflagfootball.com

The long wait is over, and word is beginning to catch-on... The Gym Is OPEN! The day began in the early afternoon with an open house grand opening. Tours of the facilities, raffle prizes and more greeted members and guests.

Heather Lee, of Holistic Ninja Wellness Services, was onhand to share information on her BIE methodology - think accupuncture without needles.

By late afternoon, all were present and the team at ETA, led by partners David Luera and Jim Carr, held the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

West Coast Wildfire U17 Girls Undefeated at Regionals Submitted by Becky McDougald, West Coast Soccer

West Coast Wildfire U17G – The West Coast Wildfire went undefeated in four games in the U.S. Club Soccer West Regionals tournament to earn a spot in the national competition to be held in Aurora Colorado in late July.

In the first game in Davis, California, Wildfire faced a visiting team Nevada. Within the first 10 minutes, Wildfire’s Tatiana Elsea scored with an assist from Rachel McCarthy. Goal two came 4 minutes later came from Midfielder Sydney Mendoza with a long shot that sailed over the Keepers fingertips. The third goal came 6 minutes later with a beautiful pass from Kate Wallace to Savannah Seals. Sierra Martin scored another two right be half to make the score 5-0. As the second half got underway, Tori Borga crossed to Tatiana Elsea for goals 6.

McCarthy got goals 7 unassisted, and Sara Shea passed to Kayla Grisham for goal 8. Nevada didn’t know what hit them, the match ended 8-0 Wildfire.

The second game was against long time rival, Bay Oaks. Wildfire’s Megan Clifton scored first from a pass from Borgna. Bay Oaks managed to get one back to go 1-1 at the half.

In a good passing battle, the second half went scoreless until the 70 minute. Wildfire’s Isabella Barbero sent a perfectly placed corner kick to the middle of the box where Martin pulled off a flick over her back to place the ball into the net.

Wildfire moved ahead 2-1 to win the match.

In game 3, Wildfire faced a physically big team from Boulder, Colorado. FC Boulder scored first by executing off a nice pass to their right wing. Wildfire could not answer through the rest of the first half. The second half started slow but Wildfire adjusted to ramp up the offensive attack. With numerous shots on goal, one was bound to go in. With one minute remaining in the match, Martin connected on

a loose ball on the left side of the goal to tie the match. Game 3 ended in a 1-1 draw.

The two top point earners, Wildfire and FC Boulder, moved on to the fourth and final game.

The winner would win a chance to compete at Nationals. Knowing FC Boulder would put up a good fight, Wildfire showed up ready win. At the whistle, Wildfire attacked first with a few shots on goals but couldn’t sink any. As both teams tried to find a rhythm, the game quickly turned into a battle in the midfield. Wildfire’s Amanda Zeck, Mayzin Kung, Martin, and Mendoza took control in the middle forcing Boulder to the outside where Wildfire’s defensive line of Seals, Clifton, Shea, Leila Anzo, Bri Torres, and Krissy Keller disrupted plays and picked off runners. The few shots on goal by Boulder were deflected by Wildfire Keepers Mackenzie Long, and Brianne Radliff. With 20 minutes remaining in the second half, Wildfire finally executed on an offensive play. Wildfire’s Zeck stole a ball from a Boulder Forward and distributed it to Borgna making a run down the right side of the field. Borgna sent a perfectly placed crossed into the middle of the box where Kate Wallace headed the ball toward the left side of the goal. The ball was deflected by Boulder’s Keeper into the path of Clifton who cleaned up from the left and scored the only goal of the match. Wildfire moved ahead 1-0 and claimed the victory.

With one summer tournament championship under their belt, the Wildfire now focus on a few upcoming college showcases including the Davis Legacy College Showcase and Surf Cup, and the U.S. Club Soccer National tournament.

Join a recreational-level softball program that will take place in Fall for girls aged 7 – 14 years old.

We would like to encourage girls of all skill-levels – including those without prior experience – to participate. Mountain House does not have a traditional Spring Softball League and we would like to offer girls who play softball in the spring a chance to continue their skill development in the fall without joining a travel team.
