The newest Sunday morning tradition in Mountain House appears to be catching on. The Mountain House Certified Farmers’ Market, located every Sunday morning at the edge of Wicklund Park, along Legacy Dr. and around the corner at Historic, is going year ‘round. Market Manager, Bill Harlow, with All Bay Farmers’ Market Association, made the announcement October 16, 2017.

“Great news! We’ve decided to extend the new farmers’ market here in Mountain House to go year ‘round,” he stated.

Stockton, CA - The San Joaquin County Planning Commission held their second Public Hearing in as many months Thursday, October 5, 2017. Both hearings were concerning development at the county’s southwestern edge, in the unincorporated municipality of Mountain House.

Classic Video Game Theme Flavors 2017 Home Coming Parade

Lammersville Unified School District held their annual Homecoming Parade through the heart of Mountain House Friday, October 20, 2017, sporting a classic video game-based theme throughout.

The MH High School Cheer squad and Brigade Band led the way as they paraded along Central Parkway, from Main St. on down to the High School across Mustang Way. Each of the five current K-8 Elementaries was aptly represented, with MH High School leading the way.

Homecoming Royalty basqued in the warm Autumn afternoon as a respectable crowd of family and friends cheered them on.

MHTC Celebrates Bathukamma With Style Submitted by Srini Mittapelly

Mountain House Telugu Community (MHTC) celebrated Bathukamma and Dassera with gaiety and fervour on the 30th of September in Wicklund Park Gazebo. The very word Bathukamma means ‘come back to life mother’ and the festival is a way of asking for Goddess Sati to return. Legend has it that Sati returned as Goddess Parvati, hence the festival is also dedicated to Goddess Parvati.

About 100 ladies participated on September 30th for a day long festivity; all danced forming circles and clapping around the Bathukamma to the tunes of the traditional folklore. Later in the evening these flowers were immersed in the water.

Flowers for the event were bought and arranged a day before with great enthusiasm. Lots of effort was put in by the team to bring the best quality flowers which were later arranged in a order on a plate in circular layers making a conical form. This flower arrangement workshop was attended by 30 ladies on the evening of 29th September.

From the weather to the culture from people to the festivities, leveraging the unity in the community. The weather lent credence to the overall celebrations.

The community also celebrated Diwali on the 22nd of October. Stay tuned for more from that!

Planning Commission Gives Green Light to Town Center Construction Plans continued from page 1

He pointed out major chosen street names, all consistent with the Master Plan’s “Italianate” design theme. Giotto St., Raphael and Vivaldi Streets. He also pointed out a change in the working name of “Plaza Street” to what will now be known as “Grand Avenue”.

The latest design adjustments made to these final maps served mainly to “achieve consistency” throughout. Bringing the tentative map into compliance included meeting the Community Development Department’s requirements for safe and consistent intersections, which he said has been achieved.

Commissioner Stan Morri inquired about the parks, seeking clarity on to what degree the land throughout the parks area would be developed. Mountain House Community Services District General Manager Ed Pattison stepped up to address his question. He and Mr. Funderburg both weighed in on the beauty of the creek trail, and how there would also be plenty of ball fields and the like.

Development Manager, David Sargent, addressed the commission, expressing to them the long-term planning that has gone into the town center design, and the need to move forward, with the grocery store, in particular.

“They’re starting to not believe us,” he quipped about comments from residents. “but we are moving forward with this,” he added a moment later.

The only point of potentially great concern over the master plan came from Commissioner Shane Rawlings. He stated that nowhere in the plans for a town that will ultimately house some 44,000 people did he see a hospital.

While there is no hospital, per se, planned for Mountain House, zoning for an urgent care center and other medical facilities are included, Sargent stated.

Commissioner Morri also pointed out that Sutter Hospitals recently purchased a good bit of land on the western side of Tracy, along Corral Hollow Rd., that, in his view, continued page 8

I was just outside my front door the other day, coming back from having taken our little dog out for a bit of a walk, when a friendly woman in a minivan pulled up to speak to me.

“You’re Bryan, right?” she queried. Not really waiting for my reply, she told me her name and mentioned that we had spoken once before, albeit a little while ago. I vaguely recalled.

“I just want to tell you how much we really appreciate your paper!” she said enthusiastically. Given that my head in that moment was deep in the creative process of putting this issue together, I admit I surprised, and was pleasantly taken a little aback.

I thanked her quite profusely, and explained to her that I was in the throws of getting it ready to go to press. I also thanked her for her kind words, as it’s truly inspiring for me - especially when I’m in the throws of crunch-time deadline - to know that people do still look forward to receiving their paper in the mail.

It’s been five years, as of this issue, since I got the hair-brained idea to start a newspaper. Who does that?!, I still ask myself. In this technology age, with large papers having already pretty much fallen by the wayside, why would anyone in their right mind launch a new paper?

Short answer is, because we needed it.

The notion came to me over a period of a few months when, in 2012, having been living here in Mountain House for about three years, my wife and I became quite aware that there really was no means of reaching everyone in town, other than those engaged in social media.

Anyway, I’ve told that story too many times. Suffice it to say, that I discovered, only after I was several issues into this, that newspapers haven’t gone away, they’ve adapted, and shifted to a local market

model. Papers similar to Mountain House Matters are doing quite well in numerous other areas.

I do still think that my choice to mail the paper to every address in our zip code was the way to go. We are limited to only our paid advertisers as our sole source of revenue - and, quite frankly, I didn’t really realize there could be worthwhile revenue in subscriptions. The notion of it just seemed a logistical nightmare when this was all originally stirring around in my brain.

I want to thank anyone and everyone who has played any role in helping forward the progress of Mountain House Matters, from all the community leaders and groups who engage with me/us, to every advertiser who’s ever placed an ad. None of it could happen without all of that.

I continue to see this community as a very special place to live. Yes, we have issues, and folks don’t always see eye to eye. But, we it happens all the time: when push comes to shove - when someone is in need of help in any way - our neighbors respond in the most caring of ways.

The whole village concept I think helps set the tone for a different approach to life and living here. Whether you commute for hours everyday, or are able to be able to stay closer to home, we not only have a lot going on here, but a lot to offer.

The paper’s circulation has grown by close to 70% these past five years from just over 3,400 when we started, to now reaching just shy of 5,000 addresses (4,955 as of this issue). The numbers will continue to grow, as we’re only about a third of the way to build-out.

For those of you new to town, I would encourage you to find what works for you and get involved in your community. We have a unique opportunity to build our home pretty much from scratch. Together, we get to create this.

STORM WATER DRAINAGE

When it rains, water washes over roofs, streets, driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, and land surfaces. Along the way, it can pick up a variety of pollutants, such as oil, pesticides, metals, chemicals, and soil. This polluted stormwater drains into the storm system that eventually discharges into our creek and rivers. The pollutants can endanger the water quality of our waterways, making them unhealthy for people, fish, and wildlife. No matter where you live, there's a drainage system in place to help rainwater find its way to the river.

Given the MHCSD's limited budget and staff, MHCSD relies heavily on citizen involvement to help keep streets safe and storm drains clean and to notify MHCSD if a higher level of maintenance is needed at a particular location.

How you can help keep storm drains clean To lessen street flooding, the MHCSD asks residents and property managers to help clean the inlets and storm drains in front of your properties. Use a rake or pitch fork to clear leaves, limbs, and debris from the storm drain. Do not put your feet and hands into the storm drain because all kinds of debris collect there that could be dangerous. Do not try to remove the grate, only the debris on top of the grate.

The best time to inspect the storm drains in front of your house or business is prior to a rain event and right after a rain. If you cannot clear a clogged storm drain yourself,

notify the MHCSD that help is needed. Call 209-831-2300 and report the particular location.

Please do not rake or blow the leaves from your yard into the street. Bag them at the curb in the parking strip and prepare them for curbside pickup by your garbage hauler.

For leaves that have fallen into the street, please keep them out of the channel right along the curb, where they will block the path of rainwater. Rake them at least one foot from the curb.

How to prevent neighborhood drainage problems Water is the most common cause of unstable slopes and erosion. Check your home's drainage system. Maintaining the drainage system on private property is the owner's responsibility. Make sure your drainage system directs water away from your foundation and not on to your neighbor's property.

Clean your gutters and downspouts. Check your gutters once a week during fall and winter. Just one wind or rainstorm can clog a well-flowing drainage system.

Never block any part of the MHCSD's drainage system.

Do not put leaves, dirt, grass clippings, or any materials in ditches, culverts, or drains. Doing so can cause flooding.

It is against the law to dump any material into the drainage system. To report illegal dumping, call 209-831-2300.

should help provide closer access for Mountain House.

Sargent’s presentation also pointed out a prominently located three acre transit center, with a bus stop right on Main Street. Plans for early development along Grand Avenue (shown on the map as Plaza St) will focus primarily on shops and restaurants on the northern side of the street, with the other side being built in the subsequent phase of development.

Grand Ave. is to also include a 10-20,000 square foot community center.

Sargent included a slide of the original Town Center map, as portrayed in 2012. Ultimately, the biggest change from the original map, he said, was in breaking up the roadways to make the town center “more pedestrian-friendly”. Removing the original design of DeAnza Blvd as a thoroughfare running through the

heart of the downtown made sense, he explained, even in early community workshops a few years ago.

The hope now, assuming a final approval vote is achieved by the County Board of Supervisors in November, is that grading may begin as early as next Summer. Work on the Town Hall/Library complex on the Western side of downtown, approved a month ago, could well start even before that.

The commission passed the proposed final map plans in a unanimous vote, and Chair, Kitty Walker, expressed her appreciation to the Community Development Department in doing excellent work.

CDD Manager, Kerry Sullivan, stated that, with no objections having been made, the board of supervisors will likely vote on these plans at their second meeting of November, just before Thanksgiving, November 21.

Home staging is simply the preparation done to house mostly decorating to promote the house and increase its appeal to the buyers. It allows the House to speak to the buyer. When selling your home, you must make it appealing to the buyer and not sell it as you love it.

Professionals who are great at staging know the trends and the different tastes in the current market. This helps you to set up your home in the right way and more to the buyers’ taste. With the right staging, 81% of buyers find it easier to visualize the property as a future home. This according to the Realtors’ report is 45% more likely to positively influence the value of your home if it is decorated to a buyer’s taste. On the other hand, when the staging is not done to the buyer’s taste it will negatively influence the value of the home.

So, which areas of a house need to be staged?

Naturally, it would be very time consuming and probably expensive to stage the entire home. On the other hand, these seven areas of your home should undergo the staging process if you are looking to sell your house fast and at a very good price. Below are the seven areas of your

home you should stage and why it is advised that you do so.

Living Room The living room is probably the one part of the house that unites the whole family. It is a room where laughter and quality family time is spent amongst all the family members. Therefore, prospective buyers need to be sure that it is spacious and big enough to entertain guests, they also need to be sure that it feels bright and can find a nice spot where they can watch television for entertainment.

A room full of accessories can feel cramped even if it is spacious and likewise an empty living room can be difficult to envision. The idea here is to give the buyer something to work with in their mind. A few light bulbs that are not very bright nor dim, as well as subtle but beautiful accessories like a flower vase, beautiful window drapes and some flowers for the aesthetics, can make the living room looking a lot better. Remember to clean all the surfaces too.

Kitchen Contrary to what many people may believe, staging a kitchen is also very important. You want to convince the buyer that they will enjoy making meals there.

For starters, make sure the kitchen is free from clutter and unnecessary utensils.

However, you can leave the coffee maker, toaster and a beautiful fruit bowl on the counter. Remember, the kitchen drawers and sink should be absolutely clean and sparkling too.

Master Bedroom You want to project this feel of the master’s bedroom being a haven for relaxation and leisure. Therefore, ensure it is as clutter free as possible. Wardrobes

should be empty and hangers should be nicely placed. In addition, the bed should be neatly made with a bright colored bedspread and the pillows should be well tucked and placed. Also, ensure the night lamp is on and you could place a few books just beside the bed, but nothing too much. Again, ensure that the room is spacious and comfortable to walk around in. Conversely, if the room has a study area, you can go ahead and neatly arrange books and a reading lamp there too.

Dining Room The dining room is another great place in a house where meals are served and the family can all gather around and eat. Thus, the dining area should feel spacious and bright. So, if the paintings are dark colored, it would be nice to have a bright colored table cloth and a beautiful flower with bright colors too. Also, you want to be sure that the dining table and chairs are just the perfect fit for the room, you don’t want a big table for a small dining area and vice versa.

Similarly, keep it clean, spacious and neatly arranged.

MH Students Excels in State “CAASPP” Testing

So many scholars were present, along with their families and supporters, to receive certificates and medals for perfect scores in Math and/or ELA testing. The numbers were so many, in fact, that District Superintendent, Dr. Kirk Nicholas, instructed the crowd to recognize each announced recipient with a single clap, versus the standard round of applause.

40 students were said to have achieved the English Language Acquisition ELA perfect score. Some two dozen were present this night to receive certificates and medals in person (each acknowledged with the single clap).

18 students received the perfect score award in Math, and 20 scholars achieved perfection in both ELA and Math.

“It was wonderful to see so many students performing at such a high level,” Dr. Nicholas stated. “In total, 78 students were honored.

The CAASPP is given to students in grades 3 through 8, as well as grade 11, in Math and English/Language Arts,” he explained.

“We want to thank our Teachers, Site Administrators, and Parents for providing an environment where students can thrive.”

Assistant Superintendent, Heather Sherburn, stated that these tests really do provide a comprehensive means of tracking the progress of students as they move through their years in the district.

The Lammersville Unified School District ranks as the number one district in San Joaquin County, and has surpassed Livermore in the statewide testing, Nicholas reported.

Once the ceremony was complete and families had gone home, Sherburn, together with Associate Superintendent Thor Harrison, gave a presentation on the District’s Professional Development program later at the same meeting. The LUSD’s commitment to providing on-going training development of district teachers has done a great deal to help facilitate the results seen with the testing.

“We can see we’re on the right path,” she said. Stating the commitment of so many teachers who gave of their Summer “offtime” to further themselves with the Professional Development training offered was commendable, she said.

“We are doing all we can to teach our teachers how to better teach within this new system,” she explained. She also stated that, while great progress has been made, there is still plenty of work to be done.

On this night, the accomplishments were well worth celebrating.

More than half of the 40 LUSD Students who achieved perfect scores on their ELA CAASPP scores last Spring were on-hand at the October 18th LUSD Governing Board Meeting to be honored with certificates and medals.

Launched originally just this past August, the initial plan was to run just through November 19th, anticipating a Winter break, with plans to start-up again in the Spring.

However, support has been consistent enough, Harlow said, that his organization, and the associated market vendors, are willing to keep things going.

“We really appreciate everyone’s support,” Bill said. “We are going to need it throughout the winter/lean times,” he added.

Additionally, the market hours are being changed to 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. from the previous 8am-noon.

“We set the hours earlier to start in consideration of the Summer heat,” Harlow said.

We’ll go with these more traditional market hours through the Winter and likely go back to the earlier time slot next Spring/Summer.”

Farmers’ markets provide much more than just fruits and vegetables. A veritable store on the street corner is now available to the Mountain House community on a weekly basis.

“Come on out and get your fresh, in-season produce, artisan baked goods, hummus, fresh fish,” Bill encouraged. “For lunch you can pick up tamales, and pizza coming soon. We have Jolt Coffee in the mornings and fresh asian vegetables,” he added.

“We also have American organic vegetables and, during winter, a full array of citrus: Oranges; mardarins; grapefruit; pomelos; and more. Of course, there’s also local honey and farm-fresh eggs.”

Harlow expressed some concern about how well the word is getting out throughout town.

Community Events: The Month of September 2017, our French Camp McKinley Fire District and our Mountain House Fire Department personnel were thrilled about the number of opportunities they had with the members of the communities of Mountain House Community Services District.

• 09-09-2017: On-Duty crews visited a child’s birthday party from 4:45 to 5:45 pm. The On-Duty crew donned their PPE for the children and showed the children some of MHFD apparatuses.

• 09-28-2017: On-Duty crews welcomed Little Learners to the Fire House for a fully involved station tour from 9:00 am to the early afternoon that day. The children got a chance to meet some of the MHFD staff and they took pictures while exploring the fire apparatuses at Station 16-1. The crew members were happy to provide fire safety tips to the children.

• 09-29-2017: The On-Duty crews welcomed the Little Learners to another day to the Fire House for another station tour but this time it was with different children. Similar to the day prior, the On-Duty crews provided fire safety tips and provided exploration of the fire apparatus. Many pictures were taken with the children. Crew members enjoyed this day as much as the day prior.

• 09-30-2017: On-Duty crews attended the Mountain House Telugu Community’s Floral Festival (known as Bathukamma). On-Duty crew enjoyed lunch with the Mountain House Telugu Community. MHFD staff are excited for more events like these in the future, they were very grateful for the invitation.

• 09-30-2017: MHFD staff members and On-Duty crews were present at the intersection of Mustang and Tradition Street for Fill the Boot fundraiser.

Wine Club Delights in South African Theme

Mountain House, CA - Local Wine Club members and guests were treated to an authentic South African Braai at the October 14, 2017 tasting event.

A joint effort by three host families: Jaco & Anne-marie Swanepoel; Jennifer & Scott Snyder; and Patricia & Bryan Harrison, the event featured a veritable feast of flavors and varietals, all with South African roots.

Held at the Snyder residence in Questa Village, the sold-out event had the club all a-buzz in the lead-up.

Altamont resident Krysten Hahn said the day after, "Last night was my first Wine Club event. I was hesitant and a little nervous because I'm just now entering the wonderful world of wine, and still somewhat new to the community. But I was welcomed with a warm greeting at the door and lots of smiling faces. Everyone I talked with was so nice and it was great seeing everyone having a good time.

“And then the food! Oh my gosh!

Each dish was delicious in its own way. Thank you all again for a wonderful time. I will for sure be coming back."

Board member, Lorrie Rudock, gave a glowing review. “What an awesome evening! Jennifer, Scott, Patricia, Bryan, Anne-marie and Jaco... you outdid yourselves. The food was absolutely amazing, the pairings incredible, and the company was outstanding. It was a fabulous night! So wonderful to see so many new members having a great time.”

And, new member, Mayra Moniz, expressed her pleasure, as well. “It was super great,” she exclaimed. “Thank you to the hosts of the event this evening. I cannot wait for the next month event.”

Following the initial customary happy hour of members sharing favorite wines, the first featured pairing was a delicious curry-based savory delight known as “Bunny Chow”, served over a hollowed-out bread, as presented by Patricia Harrison. The dish was paired with the South African wine, Amy Sauvignon Blanc (Western Cape, South Africa).

The second pairing, more of a main course, featured the braai/barbecue, as done expertly

by Jaco Swanepoel - a native South African.

discovered being made locally, in Manteca.

The over-abundance of meat wound up being pretty well scarfed up, with the excess having been put out separately after the serving. The Braai serving also featured a particular favorite dish, known as “Pap & Sheba” (maize porridge and a sweet tomato sauce). Paired with Glen Carlou Grand Classique Bordeaux red blend (Cape Winelands, South Africa), the crowd continued the swooning that began with the first pairing.

The third and final pairing course was a Malva Pudding (Google it, it's amazing!) paired with Graham Beck Brut, from Western Cape, South Africa. The Malva Pudding was absolutely amazing, especially paired with the dry brut sparkling wine. A rich, buttery but flaky, spongy cake of sorts, had a light flavor that exploded with sweet yumminess upon entering your mouth. So good!

The last of the pairing dishes did run a bit late for this one, and the party carried on well beyond the midnight hour.

Is Inflammation and Pain A Good or Bad Thing?

For many people the word inflammation is often seen as a negative thing.

But is this true? The short answer is sometimes it is and sometimes it is not.

Acute Inflammation

Remember that the acute inflammatory process is what helps heal the tissue. Hypothetically, if it were possible to remove all the inflammatory chemicals after an injury, the damaged tissue would NOT heal. Inflammation triggers the body’s healing process to occur. The key is not to stop inflammation but rather to control it. In this state, ice can be very helpful to allow the healing process take place.

Ice vs. Heat

If the injury is severe and there are obvious signs of inflammation; (pain, heat, redness, swelling and loss of function), then ice works well as it causes the blood vessels to vasoconstrict thus slowing down the flow of inflammatory chemicals into the injured soft tissue.

If, however, the injury is mild and there are minimal or no signs of inflammation then heat works well. Think about what works best after a hard day’s work. A nice warm bath or a heating pad is very effective for tight muscles even though there is some minor inflammation occurring. In this situation, it is best to keep the blood vessels open and encourage the fluids to flow out of the joint space.

NOTE: Always consult with a reputable health professional in terms of using ice or heat, if you are uncertain. As a general rule of thumb, however, you want to use ice the first 48 hours after an acute inflammatory process occurs, and use heat after the first 48 hours.

Chronic Inflammation

This is a different story altogether. Chronic inflammation may occur in soft tissue areas of the body from old nagging injuries that never healed correctly or from serious disease processes of visceral organs. Chronic inflammation is generally considered an unhealthy over-response of inflammation

that can linger for months to many years.

Numerous diseases have been linked to chronic inflammation.

And What About Pain?

Pain should be seen as neither good or bad, but rather as an indicator that something is out of balance in the body. The severity of pain does not always correlate with the severity of the injury. Here are some examples: Calf cramps, paper cuts, hitting your shin on the coffee table… Initially, these all may hurt tremendously but are typically not very significant long term problems.

Certainly, you won’t be heading over to the Emergency Room for these types of issues.

For Example, Try this:

Really pinch the skin on your forearm. Go ahead. That really hurts, but the lesson is a high degree of pain is not always a big problem. And try this. Bend your finger back until it’s painful. (I know a little silly).

A biopsy of the tissue won’t reveal a tumor, infection or any lesion. But releasing the finger and letting it return to its “position of comfort” will allow the pain to subside.

The Potential Bad News.

On the flip side, many deadly diseases like cancer and diabetes that are life threatening, can cause virtually no pain in the early stages.

Chiropractic Vs. Pain and Inflammation:

Chiropractors are often sought out to deal with back and neck pain. However, we need to think about low back and neck pain in a similar way as returning a bent finger back to its original “position of comfort”- it’s less about pain, and more about returning the structures back to it’s state of full functionally. Here’s a quote: “97% of back pain seen by primary care physicians is mechanical in origin - there’s something wrong with the muscles, ligaments or connective tissues.

So What Did We Learn?

Acute inflammation can be a good thing because it tells the body to initiate the healing process. Ice an acute inflammation initially to control inflammation, and use heat subsequently to move inflammation out of the joint space. Chronic inflammation is bad news. Pain is not a great indicator of the severity of a problem. Chiropractic is less about pain then returning spinal structures back to their original position, where ironically, pain typically goes away.

October is here, which means Halloween is, too!

Many children think of Halloween as a chance to get loads of free candy, but many people don’t know what Halloween is actually celebrated for. The festival of Samhain (aka Halloween) was a part of the Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe.

Held at the midway point between the Autumanl Equinox and the Winter Solstice, they believed the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts/evil spirits got really thin. This allowed weird creatures to be able to roam the Earth. In order to stop that from happening, the Celtics would have a big party to ward off those evil spirits. As time went on, more and more people started to practice this tradition. Today, it is known as Halloween.

This is the history behind one of the most popular holidays in America. To contribute to this scary month, here is a short horror story that I wrote based on a famous quote, “The last man on this Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock at the door.”

He looks up from his desk, pausing the Youtube video he was watching. He sits alone, wondering if he heard what he just thought he heard.

There’s another knock at the door, a little louder than the first time. The doorknob shakes and rattles a little. The man holds his breath, hoping that this all was just a dream.

He quietly stands up from his chair, making sure not to make too much noise. Inevitably, the chair makes a dragging sound on the cold tiles of the floor. He quickly stands up and steps to the right, pushing his chair back into the desk. This time though, he lifts up the chair and places it beneath the desk, making sure not to make the same, noisy mistake he had made a couple of seconds ago. His heart was beating loudly, right out of his chest.

and lots of scratching. This creature was trying to eat away at the door!

The doorknob rattled, more menacingly and fierce than the last time. The man was terrified, cold sweat ran down his forehead. He stepped back, faltering in each and every step. His back touched the white wall, he jumped and yelled, “Ahhhhh!” He suddenly covered his mouth, aware of the mistake he had just made.

There was a long silence. The man didn’t move a muscle. His heavy breaths were synchronized, inhale….exhale…..inhale….. exhale. He leaned against the wall and slid down into a sitting position. He sat there, staring down at his legs as if he had never seen them there before.

A minute passed, he sat very still, staring at his legs in fear. He didn’t want to look up. All of a sudden, there was loud bang on the door.

The man’s head jerked up and he immediately stood.

“Wait a second...,” he reached up to touch his ear. He pulled out a his left earbud and then his right one. “Seriously?” The man puts his hands on his hips and stared at the dangling, white earbuds in his hands. “Hahahaha…. all this time!” He nods side to side, smiling and chuckling. He takes out his iPod from his back pocket and checks the playlist. The current song that was playing read “Monster @ The Door”. “I forgot about this old song... to think that it ACTUALLY fooled me today!”

The man lightly walked back to his desk and resumed watching his Youtube video. All of a sudden, there was a knock at the door...

Board and Committee Reports October 18 2017 Facilities Committee After the tongue lashing I received in response to my last Facilities Committee Report I did some research to verify my recollection of events and found a few things; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmRSTgOl-Bs& feature=youtu.be (time:21:30) At the LUSD Board meeting of May 17, 2017 a Discussion Item had been placed on the agenda at my request. After a short discussion where Trustees Lampel, Balzarini, and Goodrich all spoke against the idea of changing District Policy to allow alcohol on district property. I asked if my fellow board members would object to my taking it to the Facilities Committee, both Trustee Balzarini and Trustee Lampel were opposed, while Trustee Goodrich was in favor of taking it to committee, even making a suggestion as to some elements she would like to see in any proposal. During the LUSD Board meeting of August 2, 2017 numerous members of the public spoke in favor of us exploring a policy that would potentially allow the consumption of alcohol at events on district property. I told the speakers and my fellow Board Members that it would be placed on a future Facilities Committee meeting agenda with the possibility of bringing a recommendation to the full board at a future meeting. I find it somewhat disingenuous that another Board Member would not recall these events, while choosing to chastise me for my actions.

I feel my integrity was called into question when it was alleged that I put my personal interests above those of the Board and District and that I had abused my power as president and committee chair. I have not, do not and will not ever put my personal interests above those of this Board or District, nor have I ever abused the position of president, I’m continued page 20

“We tried a market in Discovery Bay for a time, but found it difficult to compete with the nearby Brentwood market, which is quite a large market,” he explained.

His experience thus far with Mountain House is encouraging. “It’s been good,” he stated.

“Culturally, this market is bit differnet than I thought it would be. We’re finding that much of our most regular customer-base leans toward the Filipino and Indian communities.

We are doing our best to bring in all producers to maintain an attraction to the wealth of different cultures represented here in Mountain House,” he said.

“The diversity and consistency of those who come out to shop makes for a great farmers market, as far as sustainability.”

Harlow also said that the live music, which provides a nice ambiance for market-goers, will continue through the winter season.

Bill’s day-job is that of a substitute teacher in East San Jose, a position that keeps him employed consistently.

He shared with MH Matters that he initially got involved with farmers’ market manage-

ment in 2001, when he started with Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association. “I was seeking a managerial position mostly to help pad my resume,” he admitted. “It turned into career!”

Bill said he work for 10 years through the course of 2001-2013, taking some time-off from management for part of that time, but remaining involved with farmers’ markets throughout.

He ventured on his own with the launch of the Rio Vista June 28, 2014, he said. “Alamo opened a month later, and Saratoga was added in 2015. Discovery Bay was in 2016, and then, of course, Mountain House this year,” he explained.

Mountain House Community Services District Event Planner, Angel Lamb, has been pushing for the past three years to get this market off the ground. Her excitement at the early success and decision to extend to year’round was clear.

“From the overwhelming launch date turnout August 20th onward, this has been an encouraging development for our town,” she said with a broad smile.

Every vote I’ve ever made as a member of this board has been with one goal in mind, what is the best for this District and our students.

It was suggested that I owed an apology and considering all of the above facts, an apology may indeed be in order! I shall leave it at that!

As is my custom I will be posting this Committee Report on my Facebook pages along with links to the above referenced YouTube recordings of the sited LUSD Board meetings.

Wellness Committee Report We discussed what the priorities of the committee would be this year, the top priority will continue to be Anti-bullying/Character Counts. We reviewed the update of the District Wellness Plan, the Physical Fitness Test results and the placement of AED’s at district facilities. Also discussed was the possibility of adding a Mental Health position in the District and the Character Counts Training that took place this past Monday.

Governing Board Report I attended the Wellness Committee meeting as reported earlier.

I went to both the Mustang home Football game against Ripon and the away game against Escalon and although neither game resulted in a Mustang win our boys never gave up battling to the end.

I also took my 5 grade Volleyball playing granddaughter to her first MHHS Volleyball game against Escalon and like the football team they fought hard, unfortunately the result was a loss.

On Saturday my wife and I volunteered at the first competition for the MHHS Marching Band at Washington Union High School in Fresno. And I am proud to report the Mustangs swept their division bringing home 6 trophies including 1st place overall!

On Monday I attended the aforementioned Character Counts training. I found this training to be very informative and I believe will be very helpful to staff in dealing with student behavior and bullying.

West Coast Warriors 02 NPL Girls remain undefeated in NPL fall league after a 3-1 win October 23, 2017, against SF Elite Academy, and a 4-3 come from behind victory over Brentwood Impact.

Wildfire met with Walnut Creek in a Friday night matchup. Starting it off for wildfire was forward Tatiana Elsea with an assist from Savannah Boone to give wildfire the 1-0 lead.

The lead wouldn’t last long as Walnut Creek would tie it up before the half.

In the second half, a penalty in the box against Wildfire would give Walnut Creek the 2-1 advantage. Wildfire continued to battle and regained the lead when Savannah Boone connected twice to the net with assists from Jaden Hall and Tatiana Elsea.

Midfielders Kayla Grisham, Kaitlin Carlton and Amiah Leak continued to distribute the ball well while the Defense led by Kate Wallace, Meredith Hagler, Isabela Saavedra and Heather Tarabini would hold off Walnut Creek from scoring anymore.

Jaden Hall and Savannah Seals would add to Wildfires lead by scoring again late in the second half with help from Savannah Boone and Kayla Grisham giving West Coast a 5-2 victory and clinching the NPL 2 Fall League.

WCS Krossfire Complete State Cup Round 1 Sweep with Win Over Fusion This past Sunday, West Coast Krossfire 06 Girls hosted their crosstown rival, Livermore Fusion 06 Girls Maroon, in the third and final NorCal State Cup Round 1 match.

The match started out as a back and forth battle of the midfield with neither team really giving up any ground. Fusion was able to strike first, netting a hard shot to go up 1-0.

Krossfire answered back as Kendra Riddiough sent in a corner kick to Madylin Harrell, who crashed in from the back line to knock in the equalizer.

After that goal, Krossfire never looked back. Alana Albarran knocked in the go ahead goal off a pass from

Adriana Paneda. Madylin added an unassisted goal off a steal. Riddiough completed the first half scoring, knocking in a long pass from Ariana Butler to give Krossfire a 4-1 lead at half.

The second half picked up right where the first half left off. Summer Lane netted a pass from Alana in the first minute of the half. Minutes later, Kendra knocked in another one to put Krossfire up 6-1. Fusion wouldn't give up, though. They stormsed back, knocking in 2 goals to cut the Krossfire lead to 6-3. Krossfire defense held strong allowing no more goals to get the 6-3 victory and complete the three match sweep in the first round of State Cup play.

Next up in State Cup play for Krossfire will be Round 2, which begins on Dec. 10.

MHHS Homecoming Game Falls Just Short

The Mountain House High School Varsity Football Mustangs took-on the Hughson Huskies for the MHHS Homecoming game Friday, October 20, 2017.
