Mountain House, CA Manuel “Manny” Moreno, won the confidence of his fellow board members, receiving top honors in the board’s annual election of President and Vice CSD Board Member, Manuel Moreno, was elected President of the Board for 2017 at the December 13, 2017 meeting President for the coming year.

Joined as VP for 2018 is Ms. Bernice King-Tingle, who received the top votes in the subsequent VP election process.

Logic would dictate that these threats likely are doing nothing to force Kim to back off from arming his country with nuclear weapons but, instead, to try even harder to create a missile that is stronger and much more destructive.

If arrangeable, stay in a sheltered area that is beneath as many layers of protection as possible. Dispose of all your clothes, take a shower as soon as you can, and don’t use any conditioners because they bind radioactive material right onto your hair!

The US Government has also recommended to assemble a survival kit that includes water, food, flashlights, batteries, and any other necessities.

It is also a very good idea to make a list of shelters near you, just in case something might goes wrong inside your own home.

Keeping up with the news during a nuclear explosion is a safe way to be informed, as well.

These precautions may help us all to be as secure as possible and provide ways to take care of your family and yourself if anything like this were to happen.

None of us wants war. We all want to be safe from the dangers of it, but that may well be out of our hands. The best we can do, as citizens, is prepare ourselves. For what may come next.

MAINTENANCE STANDARDS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD STREET TREES

Street trees in the parkway strips are critical to the creation of an attractive and harmonious landscape expression in each Mountain House neighborhood.

The Mountain House Community Services District will reach out in the following months and offer some helpful information to perform routine maintenance on street trees. This information will include proper pruning techniques, when a tree should be replaced, when a tree needs pruning, when an arborist should be called and many other helpful hints and guidlenes.

Appendix F section of the Mountain House Residential Design Guideline Manual provides the requirements that each resident must follow. This document can also be found on the Mountain House website. Here are some examples of the requirements: • Those trees that have over extended, dead and unsightly branches, shall be pruned and trimmed. Damage from wind, etc., shall be repaired.

• All trees shall be pruned and trimmed only as necessary to maintain their natural form.

Trees shall not be topped, “hat-racked”, “lolly-popped”, sheared or pruned in any manner which alters the natural growth habit of the tree.

• Trees shall be pruned to maintain a central leader and to remove branches which form narrow crotches. Prune trees to maintain permanent scaffold branches which have a radial orientation and do not overlay one another. All suckers shall be removed from trees.

• All trees that are located adjacent to street and/or sidewalks shall be pruned and trimmed as necessary to maintain a height clearance of 8 ft. over sidewalks and, 12 ft. over local (inner neighborhood) streets, and 14 ft. over collector (main neighborhood) streets for vehicle and pedestrian safety.

• Trees shall be pruned to allow clearance for street light illumination and to train the trees to eventually rise above the top of the light fixtures.

• Pruning shall be completed while the tree is dormant (after leaf fall in autumn).

• Inspect each tree on a continuous basis for cross branches that may rub, broken branches, and damage from mowing equipment, etc.

• Perform “same day” clean-up of all pruned and trimmed material and dispose of this material off site.

• The watering of the tree, health and welfare is the responsibility of the homeowner.

When utilizing best practices and proper pruning techniques, results will be noticed and achieving our goal of graceful mature tree lined streets will be a reality.

OUTDOOR IRRIGATION

In the fall and winter months outdoor irrigation is no longer needed. Because of the temperatures and the frequent periods of rain, the moisture content of the soil is adequate to support turf, shrubs and trees that go dormant. The exception might be potted plants however; they will be needing much less than the warmer months. Turning off landscape irrigation will save up to 40% on water usage compared to the top of the season in July. We are still in a drought and every drop counts so please do your best to conserve.

LEAF SEASON

MHCSD encourages all homeowners and residents to maintain their yards. This should include the proper disposal of yard waste. Please use the brown tote for all yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, branches, etc.) Keep the curbs and gutter clean of debris in front of your home to prevent flooding and to protect the environment from pollution, as our Storm Drains flow directly into the creek and out to the Delta waterways. As a friendly reminder, weeds, rubbish, debris, manure, composting or decaying vegetation material should be removed and not allowed to accumulate on lots.

Mountain House maintains an intricate, gravity-based storm water system built around a number of detention basins that discharge storm water runoff to Mountain House Creek. The BMP detention basins are located within the Mountain House Creek corridor.

Mountain House has implemented a series of wet and dry detention basins as part of their regional BMP treatment process. The regional BMP treatment consists of 25 detention basins, with 17 dry detention and 8 wet detention basins. The BMP basins are designed to capture and detain runoff from storm events, which serves to control erosion, remove pollutants, and create habitat for wildlife. Treatment processes include sedimentation, absorption, filtration, and biological uptake. Runoff is treated within the basins and slowly released into a pair of perforated pipes buried in a gravel bed for dry detention basins. Given a sufficient detention period, a substantial reduction of target pollutants can be achieved prior to its discharge into Mountain House Creek. Mountain House Creek is a tributary to Old River located to the north of the Community.

What is an illicit discharge?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines an illicit discharge as, “any discharge into a storm drain system that is not composed

entirely of stormwater.” This means that anything other than simply the water that falls from the sky is an illicit discharge. There are many hazardous household products, yard care products, fertilizers, dog waste, car soaps and automotive fluids that turn what should only be stormwater into an illicit discharge that pollutes and degrades local water quality.

Kiwanis Builds Momentum with Ice Cream Social Submitted by Tony Montalbo Photos by Eric Endow, Endow Photography The developing Mountain House Kiwanis Club gathered together with the MH High School Key Club for an Ice Cream Social event November 30, 2017. Held at the MHHS Multi-Purpose Room, the night was orchestrated

by District Trustee, Tony Montalbo, and included Kiwanis Club Presidents from several area clubs: Larry Alegre, of the Tracy club; Scott Heath, of Manteca Sunrise; Brian Kass, of Stockton; and Lodi club President, Jason Clark. Brian Swanson, Division 27 Lt. Governor, was in attendance, as well. They all addressed what it means to be a Kiwanian.

The Tracy Club provided the ice cream and served the ice cream to the attendees.

There were three other Tracy Kiwanians in attendance, as well: Bob Haupt; Richard Hughes; and Steve Viado.

Key Clubbers Angelina Trinh, President of MHHS Key Club, and Eunice Nguyen, who is the Assistant to the Key Club Lt. Governor for DIVISION 27 South, both spoke about what Key Club means to them.

Tracy Council Woman, Nancy Young, was the special guest for the evening. Ms. Young also serves as the Kiwanis advisor for MHHS Key Club, and said some words concerning the value of Key Club.

“We had a total of fifty people in attendance,” reported Mr. Montalbo.

“We discussed some of the attributes of what Key Club and Kiwanis can do for the community. We are in the process of starting a new Kiwanis Club in Mountain House.”

Mr. Montalbo addressed the attendees, as did Tony’s wife and fellow Kiwanian, Dianne Colon-Montalbo.

KIWANIS serves the children of the world and our local communities, the couple explained.

Holly Jolly Christmas Draws a Crowd

A sold out crowd filled the halls of the Questa School multi-purpose room Saturday, December 10, 2017 for a special evening of performances at “Holly Jolly Christmas”.

Orchestrated by Vanitha Daniel, and the crew at Smartling Learning Center, the evening featured holiday performances from children of various Moutain House daycare and preschool programs. A benefit for the MH High School Speech & Debate Club, the show was chalk full of nicely rehearsed singing and dance performances.

“The three hour event was packed with Mul-

tilingual Christmas Carols, Christmas Dance Performances (Classical, Bollywood and Western), Puerto Rican Drums, Christmas Nativity Musical which comprised of about 85 kids and orchestra performance,” Ms. Daniel stated on her Facebook page.

She added, “A BIG Thank you to everyone who joined us in the Holly Jolly Christmas celebration on Dec 10th... and making it a grand success!!!”

Profits were to go to the MHHS Speech & Debate Club, as well as the One Million Lights organization.

Donations Come Through for Chest Of Hope Coats & Toys Drive

Chest of Hope, a non-profit agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence, held their annual Coats & Toys Drive Saturday, December 16, 2017 at their facility in Tracy.

Local dignitaries and general supporters from the area stopped by with gifts for the many families the organization assists throughout the year.

Led by President Merlyn Pittman and her board and advisory council, Chest of Hope survives on donations and fund-raising.

Founded originally in 2005 by a group of friends and volunteers, Chest of Hope’s mission is not only to work to break the cycle of domestic violence, but also to build a community free of abuse. For more, go to: www.

Big Turnout for Fourth Annual Photos with Santa Event at Klemm

Families lined up continually December 9, 2017 for the annual opportunity to have their photos taken with Santa, courtesy of the fine folks at Klemm Real Estate. A joint community effort, in conjunction with Valley Chiropractic next door, literally hundreds of families paraded through Santa’s workshop at Wicklund Crossing throughout the afternoon.

“Thank you to our ENTIRE community for allowing us at Klemm Real Estate to serve you today!,” stated Josh Anderson. “The

photos were amazing, the event was a record turnout, and we had a blast!”

A converted golf cart provided sleigh rides, courtesy of Ryan and Lorena Baker. Noted local photographer, Jenni Kaus, ran the show with Santa. Crafts and cookies were provided by Annie and Paul Gallegos, and Valley Chiropractic offered free massages and a welcoming cocoa bar.

Events:

The Month of November 2017, our French Camp McKinley Fire District and our Mountain House Fire Department personnel were thrilled about the number of opportunities they had with the members of the communities of Mountain House Community Services District.

• 11-1-2017: iKids Academy Preschool & After School Program and Hema Ramesh visited the on-duty crew at the MH Fire Station for a Station Tour. The on-duty staff showed them the equipment and tools on the apparatus.

There were around ten children of the ages of 2-10 years old and three adults accompanied them during the Station Tour.

• 11-7-2017: On-Duty crews visited the Mountain House High School Library to visit the LDS Youth in the evening because the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invited on-duty crew and the on-duty Battalion Chief and the Fire Chief to MHHS Library to honor all firemen of the MHFD. The on-duty Battalion Chief attended on the behalf of the Fire Chief; the on-duty crews provided explanations and information to the youth about what they can do to assist in emergency situations. Many topics were covered and the staff would like to attend more of these kinds of events because it helps the community very much.

• B: On-Duty crews had one ride-along during the mid-day whom has an interest in involving themselves in the fire service some day soon.

The popular Jingle All The Way 5k run was held on a beautiful, clear and crisp, Saturday morning, December 2, 2017. Hosted by the Service Organization of Mountain House non-profit group (SOMoHo), the event featured some 250 runners, many dressed in the spirit of the holiday season.

Submitted by Becky McDougald West Coast Soccer 05 boys Earthquakes started the 2nd round of State Cup with a strong performance. After going down 1-0 early in the game to the Turlock Tornados, the Earthquakes 05 team came charging back with a goal from Diego Collazo on a beautifully placed free kick from the far left side that drifted over the Tornados GK head. Emanuel Collazo put in the go ahead goal making it 2-1 at the end of the first half.

The West Coast Quakes dominated the second half scoring six more goals. A goal from Ricardo Ramos just after the whistle blew set the tone for the rest of the game. Three players were recently

identified by coach Friday Ebeji and brought into the Earthquakes Academy 05 training by Director Troy Dayak “The entire team played great and the three players showed why they were selected to Earthquakes full Academy training” Emmanuel Collazo & Diego Collazo each ended the game with hat tricks and defender Zachariah Williams helped the team shut down the opponent while scoring a goal of his own. The West Coast Earthquakes is an affiliate of the San Jose Earthquakes and is dedicated to finding and developing top local talent while providing a pathway for the players to get to the professional level.

The West Coast Krew u13 girls faced-off against El Dorado Hills SC 05 Girls Blue in the Silver 2 division for state cup champions in Modesto CA December 10, 2017. The Krew girls advanced to the finals after beating Santa Rosa united 6-1 the previous weekend.

The championship game did not start out well for West Coast as El Dorado scored first just 2 minutes into the match. Krew collected their composure and then proceeded to play a much more evenly matched game that saw a number of great chances by Paisley Merlin, Marina Rivera and Lauren Stoneberger turned away by the El Dorado goalkeeper before the half.

As the second half got underway Krew began to really get into a rhythm and spent most of the second half on the El Dorado end of the field. for 30 minutes Krew continued to attack but could not put the equalizer into the net. With just about five minutes left in the

game Chloe Lucero took a long range shot from 15 yards outside of the box and placed it perfectly over the El Dorado goal keepers head and hands to tie the game at 1-1.

Krew kept the pressure turned up and not satisfied to play for extra time continued to attack the El Dorado team. With just a little more than 2 minutes left in the game, Summer Lane who was brought up from the u12 Krossfire team to play with Krew for State Cup hit a perfectly struck ball that sailed in over the outstretched arms of the El Dorado Goal Keeper to put Krew up 2-1 and become the 2017 U13 girls Silver 2 champions.

“It was a great team effort with sound defense and well timed attacks. The girls continued to fight the entire game while playing over 65 minutes down 1-0. What a great way to end the season for West Coast Krew.” - Head Coach Stuart Rafferty.
