gave the go-ahead to finish final maps of streets and plots. At the July 11th presentation, CSD Board Director Andy Su asked Docto if there could still be further changes even after approving this Final Map, or if this was it. Docto explained that, while there can, and will likely, be alterations within the various plots, depending on whatever businesses and such wind up coming, this Final Map defines the roads and plot lines through all four (4) phases of the impending Town Center Development, and is the crucial step needed to move toward building it. “The lot lines are firm,” he said. When construction does finally begin, one of the first steps will be the

Town Center Final Map Approved by CSD Board Mountain House, CA – The Mountain House Community Services District Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the “final map” plans for the Town Center development at their July 11, 2018 meeting. CSD staff engineer, Anthony Docto, P.E., M.ASCE, presented the board with a thorough explanation of this vital step in the process. He included a slide show presentation of the 145.3 acre area in question, and key points to what will serve as the roadmap, as it were, to building out the Mountain House down town. Last November, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the overall Site Plan for the project. That nod

Blvd intersection in Dublin,” Docto explained. Quite expansive. The MH Master Plan calls for a Transit Center to be included, as well, which the final map plan places in the heart of down town. Additionally, just north of Byron Rd., Docto pointed out plans for a future rail station (depending on available use of the track system already in place) As a “transit center”, Docto painted a picture of a hub site that could accommodate numerous modes of transportation, including: bus and/ or shuttle service, and more. With the Board’s approval, the remaining step to get things moving is a final nod by the County Supes. That is expected to happen quickly. Mountain House Developers Project Manager, David Sargent, who was among those on-hand at the board meeting for this issue, stated that ground-breaking on the new Town Hall and Library complex will begin in August. continued page 5

innovative approach to construction. Many residents pondered what that shrink-wrapped structure might be as the building was effectively wrapped to allow construction to continue through the rainy winter months. “Enrollment is exploding in Mountain House,” LUSD Board Trustee, Sharon Lampel, stated at her monthly Community Services District Board meeting presentation. The explosion in enrollment is a direct result of the fast-pace of housing starts the town is experiencing. The School district continues to demonstrate their commitment to excellence in keeping this project on-track to meet such a rigorous deadline.

The first day of school throughout the district is August 8th, and preparatory time was necessary for teachers to be ready when those doors open. That feat has been accomplished. The District will host a Grand Opening celebration and open house of the all new Peter Hansen Elementary School Thursday, July 26, 2018. The Open House and tour of the buildings starts at 2pm, with an official ribbon cutting ceremony slated for 2:45 at the front of the school. The event is scheduled to end at 3:30. The community is invited and welcome to attend this momentous occasion, as Mountain House, and Lammersville Unified School District, take another big step in growth.

Director Bernice King Tingle asked for clarification, “as in, next month?” Sargent confirmed he meant next month. The plot for the Library and Town Hall complex has already been approved, and the urgency to get that project rolling is tied-in with the CSD’s current building lease, with Master Developer, Trimark Communities, LLC, which expires at the end of 2019. The other part of the urgency is that MH Developers also committed to building the permanent library within five years as part of the agreement that established the current temporary library building. That time is also impending. Located at what will be the corner of Main Street

and Providence St., the Town Hall and Library buildings, together, promise to provide a very impressive and inviting western cornerstone to the Town Center.

Sargent told MH Matters just after the meeting that, while the library and town hall will break ground next month, the work on the major intersection improvements won’t

Sunday Open Mic Jams Return to MH Bar & Grill Mountain House Bar & Grill is very pleased to announce the return of their Sunday afternoon Open Mic Jams. The events run from 2pm till 6pm every Sunday afternoon through the Summer. The program has been expanded this year to include two house bands, performing alternate weeks. “This, we feel, will allow a broader performance base,” said owner Josie Alvarez. “In the past, we’ve always had a Blues

Jam, which is always well received,” she explained. “But, we felt we could do more to open up the field a bit. So, with these two bands, we now are able to broaden the scope of music to include more Rock and Country players.” The events are free to attend, and all ages are welcome. Fresh Barbecue menu items are generally available. Players are invited to bring their instrument(s) and come sign up to play. “It’s a great time for everyone!”

Gas Station & Restaurant Center Plans Taking Shape for Mountain House

Back in March, the San Joaquin Community Development Department released a series of “referral maps” and information, as seen in MH Matters. One of those projects was listed as “Commercial Retail Use” at the corner of Grant Line Rd and Mountain House Parkway. MH Matters has obtained a map and bullet points on that project, as presented here. Neighborhood D (Cordes Village) East - Commercial Retail Use - Proposed development project will consist of a restaurant, gas station, and coffee house. Located at the northwest corner intersection of Mountain House Parkway and Grant Line Road. (SP Ill Planning Area) The project, being developed by Agora Land Services, will not only provide Mountain House with easy access to a gas station with mini-mart, but will include several food and refreshment options. Plans for projected roll-out: • Application submittal for County review and approval (site plan, architectural, site circulation, traffic, noise, landscape, signage, General Plan amendment and Specific Plan amendment). This portion is reported to be at the county, expecting to hear back mid-August 2018 • Architectural review by Mountain House Community Services District: August -September 2018 • Resubmit of comments to county for approval September 2018 • County review and possible approval to County Planning Commission late November 2018 • Possibly County Board of Supervisor approval last meeting in December 2018 • Start working on Construction Document after Planning Commission approval (November) • Submittal of Construction Document: January-February 2019 (usually includes 2-3 rounds of comments before pulling a building permit - if the county takes 4 weeks for review, developer expects 2-3 weeks to get to them, this process is expected to take approximately 4-5 months) • Bid documents February- March 2019 • Possible pulling of a Grading Permit in March-April 2019 • Pulling a Building Permit possible in April -May 2019 • June 2019 construction starts.

MH Run Jump Play founder faces long road to recovery from near-fatal accident GoFundMe account set-up for Carlos Basurto family www.gofundme.com/help-officer-basurto-and-his-family On June 14, 2018, San Mateo Police Department Patrol Officer, and founder of the popular Run Jump Play summer camp, Carlos Basurto, was driving home after a long patrol shift when he was involved in a major collision near the Highway 205/Interstate 5 Interchange. Basurto’s vehicle rolled multiple time and First Responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate him from his vehicle. For the first several days after the accident, Carlos had multiple surgeries and doctors were fighting to save his life, and limbs. Carlos is now in Intensive Care and has had four major surgeries. Unfortunately, he will still need numerous reconstructive surgeries on his extremities to be able to walk and play with his kids again. Carlos grew up on the Peninsula and graduated from Burlingame High School. He and his wife of 11 years, Cindy, have four sons. Following in his brothers’ and sister’s footsteps, Carlos became a Police Officer in 2005. He is extremely active in his church, coaches boys’ little league baseball and flag football. Six years ago, Carlos created his own summer camp for kids, Run Jump Play, where he helps the children of Mountain House stay active, involved and out of trouble each summer. A GoFundMe account was set-up by the San Mateo Police Officers’ Association to assist Carlos and his family through this most difficult time. Money raised will go directly to Carlos and the Basurto Family. Donations will be used to off-set any medical costs and supplement any additional costs to the family, as Carlos is the primary income provider. SMPOA asks everyone to please consider donating to this cause. “On behalf of the San Mateo Police Department, San Mateo Police Officers’ Association, our entire law enforcement community, and the Basurto Family, we thank you for any support you can provide and will be forever grateful.” Donations can be made via credit card on Go Fund Me. For checks, please make the check payable to the “SMPOA-Off. Carlos Basurto Relief Fund”. Checks may be sent to: San Mateo Police Officers’ Assoc., 200 Franklin Parkway, San Mateo, CA 94403

Update posted by San Mateo POA 6/25/18 Carlos was in good spirits today. He continues to make progress and was able to sit up in bed and move some. He is determined to get home to his family and is able to remain positive because of the support of his family, friends, and those who have rallied together for him. You all have given in this time of need and we could not be more grateful. Thank you!

Townsfolk lined the parade path along Central Parkway from Heritage to beyond Main Street in greater numbers than arguably has been seen in years past. Probably nearly as many (if not more) marched in the parade, representing the diversity of this growing town in grand fashion. The Mike Beck Band treated festival goers to country rock brand of music befitting the day. Cub Scout Pack 511 presented the colors and the pledge of allegiance. The Mothers' Club held their annual pie tasting contest, and a grand new water feature was added to the mix for all the kids to enjoy. Pie Tasting contest winners were as follows: Adult: Karyn McQueenquad berry pie Kids 7-17: Sofia Adamostrawberry patriotic cake Kids1-6: Aryash Aramallabread pizza. Congratulations to all! Camp Sew and Sew Summer Back to Basic Program Gears up for their Summers End dinner Camp Sew & Sew is a long-popular locally-based program where children get to learn some invaluable tools for life and living. In a warm and welcoming environment, they learn basic use of a sewing machine, hand sewing and creating a finished product. Small and private classes are offered based on the individual child’s interest and skill-level. “I have been teaching home sewing classes for 35 years to

children as young as 4 to adults,” said Camp Sew & Sew owner, Judy Ridpath. Kids in this year’s Summer Back to Basic program will be hosting a special “Summer’s End Dinner” for loved ones at the end of July. This will be Ms. Judy’s final Summer’s End Dinner, as she is retiring at the end of this season.

By Rajvee Patel

I looked outside the car window as the tall, dark trees and long, grey road swept by. It was a Saturday, normal and like every other. My mom, brother, and I were on the way to pick my father up from a college campus, where he was attending a job-related event. As soon as we reached the area, a beautiful water fountain surrounded by a large swamp greeted us. My mom parked the car on the side of a parking lot, fairly close to the fountain pool. She spotted my father walking towards the car and stepped out, with the engine on, to greet him. I was sitting in the backseat with my 3-year-old brother who was fast asleep from the exhausting day we just had. I suddenly started to feel a bit thirsty, and knowing there was a water bottle in the trunk, I stepped out to get it. I waved to my dad as I walked over to the back of the minivan. I tried to open the trunk, but the car made a weird beeping noise every time I tried to pull the swinging door open.

Camp Sew and Sew Summer Back to Basic Program gearing up for their Summers end dinner!!!

Since the car didn’t allow me to open the trunk, I figured that maybe the problem had to do with the mode the car was currently on. Out of nowhere, my 10-yearold self decided to fiddle around with the gear shifters in order to get what I wanted (an open trunk). I briskly walked to the driver’s seat and looked over to see what was taking my parents so long, they were chattering about something a few feet

away. I shrugged, leaned over, grabbed the gear-shifter, and tried to change it into the mode I thought was right.

Accidentally, the gear latched onto reverse mode and the minivan started to move all by itself! Without a driver! Panic started to settle in as the situation arose. My brother was sleeping inside a car that was about to go into a swamp if it wasn’t stopped in time. I yelled out loud as the car continued to move all by itself.

Suddenly, my dad saw what was happening and quickly started to run alongside the moving minivan. He threw his things on the ground and jumped into the driver’s seat (a heroic move, if you ask me). He stepped on the brakes before anything else could get worse. My mom and I stood in shock. He was quick to act and stopped the problematic situation in a second.

That day, I learned two lessons. One, to try and keep my cool in the most toughest of situations and to think a way out of the problem. Second, that my father is a hero. Even though he might not wear a cape.

• 6-22-2018: Mountain House FD firefighters were able to visit with a patient that they had encountered earlier this year after he was involved in a high-speed, headon vehicle collision. After months of surgeries, treatment and rehabilitation, the patient was eager to meet with the crews that responded to his accident. For a few hours, he was able to talk with the emergency responders from all agencies involved and had nothing but great things to say. We are proud to have been able to help our local EMS neighbors and save a life.

Summer Pool Program Going Along Swimmingly CSD announces Half Price Season Passes for remainder of month Mountain House’s first-ever Swim Program has been gaining in popularity since opening near the end of June, reported Events Program Director, Angel Lamb, at the July 11, 2018 Community Services District Board Meeting. The pilot program came together through some turbulent waters, but is now going swimmingly, according to reports. CSD Director, Dan Harrison, commended Ms. Lamb for the professionalism and smooth interaction he experienced when he stopped in on a Saturday. “This could easily have been a program that’s been running for five years or more, it was so smooth,” he stated. “We are seeing a lot of happy faces out there,” stated General Manager, Ed Pattison. Ms. Lamb shared with MH Matters that maintaining the mandated number of certified lifeguards on-duty at any given time has been the biggest challenge to the program. “But we haven’t had to close early yet,” she affirmed. Pattison reported the numbers to the board,

stating that to date they have had 1,139 people purchase the daily passes, with 106 season passes, 21 lap passes, and 77 swim lesson participants. Lamb stated that the swim lessons have been very popular, with 11 classes of seven students each. Through it all, the program has been pretty revenue neutral, as hoped, Pattison said. At Pattison’s suggestion, the board agreed to cut the season pass rate in half at this point, since the program is half way through the short season. “I applaud the board for taking this on, and working with the LUSD (Lammersville Unified School District board) to make it happen,” he said. Ms. Lamb stated they are averaging about 170 swimmers per day, with plenty of room for more at any given time. “The 5:00 hour seems to be the peak time,” she said. She added that the program has stayed within the mandate for lifeguard ratio at all times.

West Coast Soccer Kaos 03 Girls Earn A Spot at Nationals Submitted by Becky McDougald, West Coast Soccer

West Coast Soccer 03 Girls competed in a four day US Club Regional Championship held in Davis Ca where the winner earn a spot to go to Nationals held in Aurora Colorado July 20-24. The National Cup is US Club Soccer’s Cup-based national championship competition. Qualifying U13 through U19 teams from multiple Regional Cups and qualifying state cups across the country advance to the National Cup XVII Finals in Colorado. West Coast Kaos faced Diablo FC girls competitive team in the first game. It took just over a half to get the newly put together Kaos team firing on all cylinders as they quickly turned a goalless game into 3-0 victory. Anaya Shelton put a ball to Alivia Ganz to get on the score board. After that Daisy assisted

Madison Del Prado for goal two. Alina Garcia’s pass gave Del Prado her second of the game and the third and final goal. Goal keeper Maddie Mannina registered her first shutout. West Coast Kaos faced Simi Valley Eclipse FC for game two. Kaos picked up where they left off scoring five. Anaya Shelton recorded a 3 goal hat trick while Del Prado scored two again. Allison Rickman, Daisy Samuelson & Jayden Sanders registered assists as West Coast came out ahead 5-2. Kaos played the local Davis Legacy Black to a 2-2 tie on day three which was enough to send them to the championship match. Anaya Shelton and Del Prado scored again with Katie Zeck and Haylee Heffner each got assists. After three long days of competition it came down

to West Coast Kaos and IR Academy for Regional bragging rights. In a closely contested match it would be West Coast Soccer that came out ahead 2-1. Alina Garcia got the games first goal assisted by Anaya Shelton and Haylee Heffner put Madison Del Prado in to score the game winner. “It was great to be able to help coach the team at Regionals, the players are very talented and it’s exciting to see what’s in store for this age group in the future.” Said staff coach Tony Martins. This makes 8 consecutive years that West Coast has qualified to be at Nationals. West Coast has been a consistant national contender playing in the national final 7 times and has earned 3 national titles making them one of the most successful soccer programs in the country.
