This Summer Classic will be held August 19-20, 2014. The two-day series will take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday this year, back at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Sacramento.

“Hitting A Home Run - covering all the bases” is an apropos theme, both in honor of the Baseball “Summer Classic”, and in making the most of a mid-week conference experience, offering a chance to get out of the Sacramento Summer heat for a time.

On deck presently is Exhibitor Registration. First pitch for returning exhibitors is planned for Wednesday, March 19th. CCNC will once again maintain a maximum roster of as many 63 players for the Tradeshow portion of the two-day series. Once returning players get a chance to weigh-in, newcomers will be invited to camp.

A huge thanks to all our exhibitors. The overall CCNC experiencing is greatly enhanced because of you all.

What You Need To Know Before You Climb That Ladder

Andy Bull, “The Ladder Guy”, gave his fabulous presentation to the Mid Valley Claims Association on February 21st.

He explained that the Senate passed a mandatory Safety Meeting for all businesses back in 1989. He has been giving his talk about Ladder Safety to 8 or 10 groups a month regularly now for years.

Falls from a ladder, he said, represent the second most common cause of accidental deaths, just from six foot ladders or shorter.

Developing the ability to choose the right ladder MVCA President, Deena Lucero, thanked guest for the job at hand is a must to become a safety expert. Andy Bull, known widely as “The Ladder Guy”, demonstrated numerous ladders and their various appropriate uses. speaker, Andy Bull, of CH Bull & Company.

Andy gave the example that most of us started with Fisher Price toy ladders at the age of two, and our Grandmas took us to the slides at Parks. That means we don’t see the real danger of climbing a ladder. “Superman would stand on the edge of a building and say ‘it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman.’ WE are not planes,” he stated in his emphatic way.

If you were to fall from four and one half feet it would be an eleven mile an hour impact, he explained. Six feet would be an impact of 2400 pounds. It doesn’t take much to cause serious injury.

The main point Andy wanted to drive home was for us all to change the way we think about using ladders. Keep knees touching Past Pres. Beth Ossino and CCNC Andy Bull shows the stability of the ladder with side the ladder like the “thrill of victory”. It can become “the agony of Pres. Barbara Hall. supports. Never do this on a standard ladder! defeat if you go higher”. He suggested keeping your body pressed into the ladder. He gave the example of a man that reached into his back pocket to answer cell phone and fell and died. Don’t text and climb!

Each ladder has a “duty type” with important weight limit information. He is over 300 lbs and requires a “Type 1A” ladder. A “Type 1” is rated for a maximum 250 lbs. “Type 2” is 225 lbs. “Type 3” is 200 lbs (most common). The “Type 1AA” is rated for up to 375 lbs. The specific Type rating should be on the side of the ladder.

The safest now, he said, is a three legged stepladder.

Join the MVCA Mr. Berry has been gracious enough to offer up this presentation annually for the Mid-Valley Claims Association membership for more years now than anyone’s really sure of - at least eight or nine now, conservatively.

Mark E. Berry is a shareholder in the Stockton-based firm of Mayall, Hurley, Knutsen, Smith & Green. Born in Sacramento, California, June 25,1962, Mr. Berry graduated from California State University at Sacramento with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985, following graduation from the Northern California Police Academy in 1984. He earned his Juris Doctorate from McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific in 1991, and was admitted to was admitted to the California State Bar that same year.

Mark was employed at the City of Berkeley Police Department from 1984 until 2001. He is a member of the San Joaquin County Bar Association, having served as President in 2001. He is also a current member of The State Bar of California. Mr. Berry has been named a Fellow by the Litigation Counsel of America.
