From Fires to Collisions Happy February everyone!

I would like to thank Mr. Jim Nolt, with JH Nolt Associates, for his presentation last month. Jim filled our association in on all sorts of interesting facts with regards to “Electrical Fires”. Mr. Nolt reminded us of some rules to follow: Unplug anything with a heating element, when not in use (coffee maker, toaster); “Unplug it” do not run appliances when your not at home (dishwasher, washer/dryer); do not leave electric heaters or candles unattended, and; most importantly, “listen and be-aware of what you’re hearing” - usually a noise will generate because the appliance is neglected or just worn out (bathroom fans)!! Thank you, sir, for your presentation.

February’s presentation is a must see for both claims handlers and for those of us who service the industry, as we welcome back Paul Kayfetz, of Paul Kayfetz, Inc. Engineering and Photography. Nolt Presents “Things That Burn in the Night” at January MVCA

Mid Valley Claims Association presented Mr. Jim Nolt, PE, from JH Nolt Associates - Electrical, Mechanical, & Corrosion Engineers as the guest speaker at their January 15, 2016 Luncheon Meeting.

He spoke extensively about the shortfalls and perils of powerstrips and extension cords. Surge protectors, he said, can actually wreck the most havoc. The MOV devises that prevent surges from destroying appliances can become damaged and catch fire. He recommended Metal Power strips.

People tend to plug too many appliances into one power strip, he also said.

Other possible fire hazards include attic exhaust fans, which should be cleaned periodically.

Jim showed an attic fire that the fan blade had broken away from its spindle, the friction resulting in a fire.

Jim Nolt shared his vast knowledge with the Mid-Valley Claims Association Angela Hintz with President Staci Moreno He suggested listening to the sounds appliances make. January crowd.

When their normal sounds give way to other noise, pay heed.

He also discussed live candles, stating that one should never leave the room with lit candles unattended.

He recommended regular cleaning of clothes dryer lint filters, and even vacuuming out the back exhaust hose. Heat cannot escape when too much lint accumulates, which can result in fire - as well as clothes no longer getting very dry.

He warned about leaving portable electric heaters unattended, or in use for extended periods. Furnace air duct intake vents should never be blocked by furniture or other household items.

He also covered bathroom & laundry exhaust fans, and touched on results from putting metal items, even tea cups with metal trim, in a microwave oven.

He urged unplugging appliances not in use; not to leave home with Dishwasher running, and the importance of having GFI outlets, with reset buttons, where ever possible, even beyond where mandated.
