We attended the 24th annual Claims Conference of Northern California this past month in Sacramento. What a wonderful event this was. The new venue provided a more open feel, as well as being more conducive for attendees to mingle with the exhibitors. The educational programs Marvin and I attended were outstanding, as well. Congratulations to the entire CCNC Planning Committee. You all did a great job!

CCNC Provides Timely Focus on Dealing with CAT Claims

Over the years, the Claims Conference of Northern California has experienced its share of catastrophic events on a regional and national scale during the days of its annual event.

The most heinous of these events was 9/11/2001, when most folks arriving to attend the CCNC discovered what was happening in our nation.

On a more insurance-related instance, the massive PG&E gas explosion in San Bruno happened during the conference at the Hyatt in Sacramento. Numerous attendees and vendors alike had to leave hastily to go assist with that devastation.

It’s been suggested that part of the reason CCNC has experienced these types of catastrophes is because the conference is generally held around hurricane season for much of the country.

In a bit of a nod to all that, the 24th annual CCNC planning committee chose to produce a conference centered this year around catastrophe (CAT) claims.

Despite the fact that Hurricanes Harvey and Irma forced changes to the planned schedule of events, the training that came out of this year’s program could well serve claims people and support vendors alike for years to come.

Method of Determining Cause from the perspective of the engineer at October 20, 2017 MVCA Join the Mid-Valley Claims Association as we resume our regular luncheon meeting schedule Friday, October 20, 2017. We are pleased to present Mr. Jack H. Osborn, P.E., P.M.P., CFEI, Mechanical Consulting Engineer with Engineering Design & Testing Corp. as our guest speaker. Mr. Osborn’s presentation will be an overview of a method of determining cause from the perspective of the engineer. The method was first published in “Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention” by Mark Russell, PhD, Engineering Design & Testing (ED&T) Chief Engineer and Tim Jur, PhD, founder of ED&T. The presentation will go over the process the engineer may use to identify the root cause of defects that lead to failures. As time permits, claim examples may be used as examples in using the meth As the son of career military man, Mr. Osborn’s childhood traversed all of California and Hawaii and gave him plenty of opportunity to tour the many helicopters, jets and aircraft carriers to which his father was assigned.

His father’s interest in automobiles and motorcycles and fixing mechanical devices eventually became his own.

After earning a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Mr. Osborn began a career tending to the mechanical production needs of manufacturing plants by designing or modifying custom equipment for steel stamping, publishing inks and pencil slat production businesses. His projects included automating older manufacturing equipment with modern pneumatic, hydraulic, or electronic controls.

Mr. Osborn later joined the design staff at one of California’s pioneering water and wastewater treatment engineering companies. His design team and their projects were located in many disparate parts of the United States, giving him an appreciation for good communication and teamwork. He provided pump station and treatment plant mechanical design of HVAC, pumping, compressed air, and plumbing systems for his municipal and state clients.

Mr. Osborn eventually became a project manager, with project experience in facility improvements, industrial and process production work. His last assignment had him managing a team of young Kazakhstan engineers in Tengiz, Kazakhstan as they completed several warehouse and building construction projects.

Now with ED&T, Mr. Osborn provides consultation on industrial, commercial, and residential incidents involving equipment and machinery. His services include origin and cause, failure analysis, and scope of damage assessment.

In his off time, he enjoys rooting for his local sports teams, backpacking and camping with his wife and family, and caring for his sports car.

Mr. Osborn is a licensed engineer in the states of California and Washington.

and considered. The notion sounds simpler than the reality of it would likely be. For one thing, competition with other industry events who have established themselves throughout the years with their events held at other times of the year would be a tough nut to crack. Logistically, otherwise, there are other major hurdles that would have to be addressed.

Still, there are those said to be considering options.

For this year, however, CAT work training was demonstrative. From opening day keynote speaker, Jerry Bialick, to many of the programs offered over the two days of continuing ed classes, including use of drones, cyber technology and more, attendees walked away arguably with a good deal more working knowledge of dealing with these stressful and often overwhelming situations.

And, a good bit of fun was had along the way.
