It’s All About “Mc-SCA”!

July 2016 Message from 2015-’16 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp

Imagine if you will...it’s an already warm early June morning at the Lincoln Hills Golf Course and the breezeway between the pro shop and restaurant is filled with people registering for the 2016 SCA Golf Tournament. As I approach the buzzing crowd, above all others, I hear a cheerful and contagious laugh which appears to be coming from 2015-’16 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp someone wearing a red wig standing Barrish Pelham & Associates, Inc. tall above everyone else. The crowd around the red beacon parts and Ronald McDonald begins walking towards me! He eagerly takes my hand in greeting and then I ask him, “How are you Ronald?”, to which he replies, “McExcellent!” I think to myself, it’s going to be a good day!

Under Mathieu Schwartz’s lead, golf committee members Ashley Ramsey, April Wilkinson, and Ralph Gomez were able get Ronald McDonald himself at this year’s event. The SCA partnered with the Ronald McDonald House for this year’s golf tournament in order to heighten awareness for the charity. The Ronald McDonald House

is one of two charities the SCA will be donating to through the Giving Committee at our December lunch meeting. Well, needless to say, everyone attending was extremely generous with the donation box being stuffed and a portion of the raffle ticket sales going to the RMH. THANK YOU EVERYONE!! I would like to take this opportunity to give an absolutely humongous THANK YOU and JOB WELL DONE to JM Environmental for their Eagle sponsorship, all the sponsoring Members, and last but not least to Mathieu Schwartz for a tremendous effort in making this year’s tournament a HUGE SUCCESS! Moving forward to the SCA’s next McAwesome event will be the Education Seminar luncheon scheduled for Thursday, July 14, 2016, at the Lions Gate Hotel. The legal firm of Greve, Clifford, Wengel, & Paras will present “Hospitality & Premise Liability Claims” during the final two hour continuing education unit presentation of the calendar year. Please be sure to register for the luncheon by Monday, July 11, through the SCA website! Any questions or concerns about the program, do not hesitate to contact me, Steve Moore, at smoore@barrish.com. This seminar will be a valuable educational program for our Members concentrating more on the liability side of insurance claims rather than the familiar property side.

An SCA “Night With The Rivercats” is scheduled for Friday, August 19 and promises to be another great Social event for our Members.

Closing out this month’s President’s McMessage, I would like to encourage all of you to take some time during the next month or two and really look at the SCA. The Board of Directors needs to know how we are doing, and we need to hear it from our Members.

I would like to strongly encourage you to attend the Social and Educational events scheduled for the remainder of 2016 and/or visit our website. As usual, if you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or would like to volunteer for a committee, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please join the SCA for a two-hour luncheon seminar Thursday, July 14, 2016, as we welcome guest presenters Julie Chopourian and John D. Broghammer to address the topic of the day: Hospitality & Premises Liability Claims Litigation.

Julie Chopourian is a partner at Greve, Clifford, Wengel & Paras, LLP. Ms. Chopourian was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1998. She obtained her J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where she graduated Order of the Coif. Ms. Chopourian received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from California State University, Fresno.

Prior to joining Greve, Clifford, Wengel & Paras, LLP, Ms. Chopourian was a partner with the law firm of Sieving & Momjian, LLP. Her areas of civil practice with Sieving & Momjian, LLP included construction litigation, tort litigation, contract and business litigation, bankruptcy and collection matters.

Ms. Chopourian has vast experience in complex litigation matters and has litigated matters in virtually every court in California. She is an aggressive litigator who is committed to obtaining the best possible outcome for her clients. She prides herself in making her client’s objectives her main priority.

At Greve, Clifford, Wengel & Paras, LLP, her focus has been on construction litigation, representing design professionals, and tort and business litigation.

Ms. Chopourian is married with two children. Her interests include running, biking and cooking.

John D. Broghammer is a partner at Greve Clifford Wengel & Paras, LLP specializing in insurance coverage disputes and the representation of design professionals. Following admission to the California Bar in 1990, his practice area has focused on civil litigation with a particular emphasis on the representation of architects and engineers in construction defect litigation and the defense of public entities and corporations in landslide and flood claims. John advises and counsels design professionals in all aspects of contract preparation, risk allocation and insurance issues. He regularly lectures and writes on these items and how design professionals can work to effectively represent their clients while protecting their own interests for risk allocation, construction defect claims and contract disputes. John currently represents many of the area’s preeminent architectural and engineering firms. John also actively represents prominent insurance carriers in insurance coverage disputes and bad faith actions. His emphasis is on the defense of

He has litigated coverage for contamination sites involving the laws of many states including California, New Jersey, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Virginia and numerous others. John has aggressively litigated, arbitrated and mediated countless disputes for his clients in virtually every county in Central and Northern California. His goal is litigating actions in a manner that fully protects his clients’ interests in a business conscious and cost effective manner. He practices aggressive representation with attention to his clients’ current and long term business and community interests. John has substantial trial experience and always remains prepared to protect his client’s interests at trial if required. John was born and raised in the Midwest and brings his Midwest work ethic to the representation of his clients. Updated Online Price Comparison Tool Helps Homeowners Find Lower Insurance Rates SACRAMENTO, Calif. - To get lower insurance rates, the California Department of Insurance encourages consumers to shop around, which is why Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones is announced his desire for Californians to take advantage of the department's easy to use online tool that helps consumers shop and compare rates before buying homeowners, condominium, renters, mobile homes, or earthquake insurance.

The homeowners insurance comparison tool is designed to take some of the guesswork out of shopping for insurance by allowing consumers to quickly and easily make comparisons of rates from both national and local insurance companies.

"The best coverage decisions are informed ones. Consumers know the large insurers that advertise, but they may not be aware of local insurers who may offer a lower price," said Commissioner Jones. "The online comparison tool helps consumers understand their options and find the coverage and features offering the best protection and cost to meet their needs. Often, it pays to shop around."

While this tool does not provide actual premium quotes, it does provide each company's average premium and a toll-free number and website address for consumers to ask questions about available discounts or credits and receive an actual premium quote. The tool also includes a link to the specific company's performance based on the consumer complaint study.

Consumers enter their county and nearest city, type and amount of coverage,

and age of the home to compare estimated premiums. Homeowners should compare prices for various insurers along with the coverage features, limits, and exclusions.

Using this tool, a couple in Sacramento shopping to insure their apartment with a $35,000 renter insurance coverage plan and a $250 deductible might find their premium options range from $125 to $583, with an average price of $307.

Compare this to a family in Folsom shopping to insure their 15 year-old home with a $400,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan and a $1,000 deductible who might find their premium options range from $663 to $2,095, with an average price of $1,145.

For a three-year-old home in Plumas, a $250,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $411 to $2,197, with an average price of $825.

In Sierra County, for a 25-year-old home in Loyalton, a $150,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $316 to $2,454, with an average price of $752.

In Nevada County, for a 15-year-old home in Grass Valley, a $200,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $404 to $2,006, with an average price of $853.

In Yuba County, for a condominium in Marysville, a $25,000 condominium insurance coverage plan with a $250 deductible, the premium would range from $88 to $331, with an average price of $203.

In Placer County, for an apartment in Lincoln, a $35,000 renter insurance coverage plan with a $250 deductible, the premium would range from $118 to $508, with an average price of $271.

For a 15-year-old home in Sutter, a $250,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $1,000 deductible, the premium would range from $426 to $2,741, with an average price of $874.

For 15-year-old home in Colusa, a $250,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $521 to $3,054, with an average price of $1,016.

In Yolo County, for an apartment in Davis, a $50,000 renter insurance coverage plan with a $250 deductible, the premium would range from $134 to $700, with an average price of $336.

In El Dorado County, for a 25-year-old home in Placerville, a $250,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $1,000 deductible, the premium would range from $489 to $1,778, with an average price of $920.

In Solano County, for an apartment in Fairfield, a $15,000 renter insurance coverage plan with a $250 deductible, the premium would range from $109 to $329, with an average price of $191.

In San Joaquin County, for an apartment in Stockton, a $50,000 renter insurance coverage plan with a $250 deductible, the premium would range from $138 to $700, with an average price of $355.

For a 15-year-old home in Amador, a $150,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $318 to

$2,199, with an average price of $722.

For 15-year-old home in Calaveras, a $300,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $634 to $2,490, with an average price of $1,172.

In Stanislaus County, for a 15-year-old home in Modesto, a $200,000 homeowner insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $323 to $2,196, with an average price of $750.

In Tuolumne County, for an apartment in Sonora, a $25,000 renter insurance coverage plan with a $250 deductible, the premium would range from $106 to $457, with an average price of $239.

Those who are not able to get homeowners insurance may obtain fire coverage through the FAIR Plan. Please ask your agent or contact the FAIR Plan for assistance.

A toll-free telephone number and/or web address for each company is provided so consumers who are interested can request an actual premium quote that specifically addresses their insurance needs.
