So much is happening with the start of the Fall season! All four major sports are going, the holiday season officially starts with Halloween, the weather is definitely getting colder, and the SCA continues to charge forward!

The Claims Conference of Northern California (CCNC) was a huge success at the McClellan Convention Center!

The venue was spacious with a fantastic layout! It still surprises me how elaborate, professional, and informative the vender booths have become. I attended an excellent educational course which was packed and walked out of the room with at least three new concepts that I can apply directly to my job! Hats off to the CCNC staff for an excellent event!

It’s time for some Top Golf! Our inaugural event last year was a huge success and a lot of fun for those attending. We are expecting an even greater attendance and more fun if that is even possible.

This year we will be introducing a new side event…Out-Drive The Director! That’s right, you can challenge an SCA Board Director in a driving contest. Mathieu Schwartz will be crushing it for the men and Tami Umland for the women. We will work out the details the night of the event, but it should be very entertaining watching our Vice President “swing out of his shoes”! CCNC Provides Timely Focus on Dealing with CAT Claims

Over the years, the Claims Conference of Northern California has experienced its share of catastrophic events on a regional and national scale during the days of its annual event.

The most heinous of these events was 9/11/2001, when most folks arriving to attend the CCNC discovered what was happening in our nation.

On a more insurance-related instance, the massive PG&E gas explosion in San Bruno happened during the conference at the Hyatt in Sacramento. Numerous attendees and vendors alike had to leave hastily to go assist with that devastation.

It’s been suggested that part of the reason CCNC has experienced these types of catastrophes is because the conference is generally held around hurricane season for much of the country.

In a bit of a nod to all that, the 24th annual CCNC planning committee chose to produce a conference centered this year around catastrophe (CAT) claims.

Despite the fact that Hurricanes Harvey and Irma forced changes to the planned schedule of events, the training that came out of this year’s program could well serve claims people and support vendors alike for years to come.

Changing the time of year of the conference has been suggested and considered. The notion sounds simpler than the reality of it would likely be. For one thing, competition with other industry events who have established themselves throughout the years with their events held at other times of the year would be a tough nut to crack. Logistically, otherwise, there are other major hurdles that would have to be addressed. Still, there are those said to be considering options.

For this year, however, CAT work training was demonstrative. From opening day keynote speaker, Jerry Bialick, to many of the programs offered over the two days of continuing ed classes, including use of drones, cyber technology and more, attendees walked away arguably with a good deal more working knowledge of dealing with these stressful and often overwhelming situations.

Department updates homeowners’ premium comparison tool to save consumers money SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Over the last decade, the housing market has changed dramatically. To keep up with those changes, the California Department of Insurance updated its Homeowners Premium Comparison Tool to reflect the changing insurance market and ensure California consumers have the most up-to-date information to make informed decisions and hopefully save money.

The department’s Homeowners Premium Comparison Tool is an easy-to-use online tool designed to take some of the guesswork out of shopping for insurance by allowing consumers to quickly and easily make comparisons of premiums from national and local insurance companies before buying homeowners, condominium, renters, mobile homes, or earthquake insurance. With more than a hundred insurers licensed to sell residential insurance in California, the range of coverage options is wide. Making side-by-side feature comparisons allows consumers to make informed coverage choices.

“It pays to shop around to find the coverage that meets your needs,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “Because this update provides consumers with realistic estimates, it’s an even more useful tool.”

While the online tool does not provide actual premium quotes, it does provide each company’s sample premium and a toll-free number or website address for consumers to ask questions about available discounts or credits and receive an actual premium quote. The tool also includes a link to the specific company’s performance based on the most recent consumer complaint study.

Using this tool, a couple in Sacramento shopping to insure their 26-year-old Southgate area home with a $200,000 homeowners insurance coverage plan and a $1,000 deductible might find their premium options range from $290 to $1,693, with an average price of $709.

Compare this to a family in Los Angeles shopping to insure their six-year-old Norwalk area home with a $500,000 homeowners insurance coverage plan and a $1,000 deductible who might find their premium options range from $555 to $4,535, with an average price of $1,392.

In San Francisco, for a 26-year-old home in Glen Park, a $750,000 homeowners insurance coverage plan with a $2,500 deductible, the premium would range from $738 to $4,666, with an average price of $2,262. For a condominium in the same area for a $75,000 condominium insurance coverage plan with a $1,000 deductible, the premium would range from $153 to $977, with an average price of $393.

In Orange County, for an apartment in Santa Ana, a $50,000 renters insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $134 to $1,590, with an average price of $324.

In San Diego, for a 41-year-old home, a $300,000 homeowners insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $465 to $2,074, with an average price of $983. For a condominium in the same area a $50,000 condominium insurance coverage plan with a $500 deductible, the premium would range from $89 to $864, with an average price of $272.
