Summertime SCA Style
3
July 2018 Message from SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp I don’t know about you folks, but I was beginning to think the 2018 Summer season was going to be really great, with lower than normal temperatures. But, OH NO!, it just took the mention of “Summer Solstice” or “The First Day of Summer” SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp to unleash the heat! Well, the SCA Social Barrish Pelham & Associates, Inc. Committee is making a valiant effort at distracting you from thinking about the high heat by planning some super fun events!
SCA MISSION STATEMENT:
“The Sacramento Claims Association is a professional organization fostering contact and communication among its members and others in the insurance claims industry. The cornerstone of the Sacramento Claims Association is rooted in four primary areas: Education; Charitable; Communication; and Social.”
We just had our annual Mayahuel mixer and it was once again a huge success! THANK YOU! to Tami Umland for spearheading this event and making it happen. We had a great turnout and our AWESOME members continued their enduring support by sponsoring the tequila tasting event. I couldn’t make the event, but I was told we had a lot of new faces there who were excited about the SCA!
Are you ready for another great Social event? The annual SCA “Night With The River Cats” event is right around the corner. July 13, 2018, the SCA will be rooting for the Cats, enjoying BBQ, and cooling off with some drinks. Jason Kettlehut has done another amazing job in coordinating this fun event! Jason tells me our group is sitting closer together this year and we are much closer to home plate, so that those of us who wish to protect our loved ones from foul balls should probably bring a glove…and use it! This is always a fun event and a great way to connect with fellow SCA members and treat clients. To purchase tickets and more information please visit our website at www.sacramentoclaims.org.
Everyone stay cool…physically and mentally! Hopefully, we will see you soon! Thanks,
Steve Moore

In Memoriam:
Tami Lynn McLarty APRIL 21, 1961 ~ JUNE 22, 2018
We are sad to report that long time claims person, friend and member of the Sacramento Claims Association, Tami Lynn McLarty, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018 at the age of 57. Tami is survived by her father John McLarty, sister Lisa Jay and husband John; brother John McCarty and wife Christine; nephew John Michael Duncan; and niece Shannon. She is preceded in passing by her mom, Pat. Tami loved vacationing in Hawaii and Mexico. Thanks to Maureen Parnell and her other friends that helped so much. A celebration of life will be announced soon. Her ashes will be spread in Hawaii as her mother's were. She was a great sister and friend and will be missed by all.
Excerpts from a 2009 Association News Network Personality Profile article on Tami, written by Joan Barrett Coming from a true multi-line background, Tami started her adjusting career with State Farm and has always been intrigued with the investigative aspect of claims. She cites her father’s job as a California Highway Patrol Captain with instilling that quest to discover the cause of an event in her as she grew. Later in her career she found a field job working with litigated files that she “loves, loves, loves!” she stated. “The art of negotiation is another challenge I enjoy” Tami went on. “Sometimes it isn’t about the money. I’ve learned to think outside the dollar amounts and really try to listen to what will make the claimants feel that a wrong has been
atoned. Sometimes it is a written apology; it could be that a bench commemorating their loved one is what success looks like to the claimant. One only learns by careful listening. “Furthermore, I believe in mediation,” she said. “I think it is smart claims handling. I like to become
involved in the mediation process, and the attorneys that I work with respect that I’m not impassive about the process.” Tall and athletic, Tami excelled at sports, from golf to snow and water skiing. “People scoff when I say I love knee boarding” she said in her 2009 interview, “but when I come off of a wake and catch another wake, they wave and cheer and I love it. But, then I get to pay for it in pain in my joints for the next week.” An imaginative cook, Tami’s signature dish is Beef Wellington and she has made it so many times that she loves to improvise the ingredients surrounding the filet for variety.

100 Deadliest Days of Summer begins as young driver at-fault collisions trend upward Statewide campaign kicks-off to warn about dangers of driving drugged SACRAMENTO, Calif. —The 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are recognized as the deadliest for teens, as collisions involving young drivers spikes sharply during this period. This year the Department of Insurance, the California Highway Patrol, Impact Teen Drivers, and the insurance industry are hoping to turn the tide by teaming up with the Ford Motor Company's Driving Skills for Life Program to educate young drivers about the dangers of driving impaired with a unique behind-the-wheel experience. "One mistake or poor decision can lead to painful and life-altering consequences from fines and increased insurance rates to the unthinkable-injuring or killing another person," said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. "Educating young drivers and building their behind-the-wheel skills is one of best investments we can make." Launched in 2003, the Ford Motor Company's Driving Skills for Life program is designed to help improve young drivers' behind-the-wheel skills beyond what they receive in basic driver education courses and teach them about risks, including distractions and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. "Traffic collisions are the number one killer of teenagers in America. New drivers often don't recognize dangerous driving situations," said CHP Valley Division Assistant Chief Ryan Stonebraker. "Driving under the influence of any amount of alcohol or drugs, or even the slightest distraction, like reaching for a cell phone, can have devastating repercussions."
While efforts to educate young drivers about the dangers of distractions and driving under the influence of alcohol are well established, the legalization of recreational cannabis presents a new opportunity for parents to talk with their teen drivers about a new impaired driving hazard, as a recent survey by the Property and Casualty Insurers Association of America found. "Our survey found that many Californians are hearing the messages warning against distracted driving, but too many people appear to have nonchalant attitudes about the dangers of drug impaired driving," said Armand Feliciano, Vice President Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. "We need more research, public awareness, and sound public policy surrounding the dangers of marijuana-impaired driving to help save lives and reduce crashes." James Lynch of the Insurance Information Institute added, "There is substantial evidence supporting that THC impairment leads to a higher rate of motor vehicle crashes, and the chance of an accident increases with consumption." This year's focus is on impaired driving and uses Ford's newly designed Drugged Driving Suit, which simulates being under the influence of marijuana and driving impaired, as drivers navigate a controlled course. Students will perform some basic tasks (walking in a straight line, catching a ball, etc.,) while wearing the suit. Leaders in law enforcement, insurance and safety will be on hand to discuss the effects of impairment on a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely and the consequences for drivers arrested for impaired driving.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced May 1, 2018 that he has approved the first insurance coverage for commercial landlords that addresses risks specific to renting to cannabis businesses. California Mutual Insurance Company is the first insurer in the state approved to add Lessor's Risk coverage for property owners who are exposed to specific risks resulting from cannabis related business activities of their commercial tenants. "As Insurance Commissioner, my goal is to make sure all Californians have insurance protection-including the legalized cannabis businesses in California," said Commissioner Jones. "I want to make sure that when consumers shop in cannabis businesses, when investors and owners invest in cannabis businesses, when vendors sell to cannabis businesses, and when landlords rent to cannabis businesses, there is insurance coverage available to cover everyone from losses. I encourage more insurance companies to follow California Mutual Insurance Company's lead and file insurance programs to fill the gaps in coverage for the cannabis industry." Lessor's Risk coverage provides liability and property insurance for commercial property owners who lease building space to commercial tenants. Specific commercial activities and businesses addressed by this coverage include cannabis labs, product manufacturing, cultivation, and dispensary operations. Commissioner Jones launched an initiative last year to encourage commercial insurance companies to write insurance to fill coverage gaps for the cannabis industry. As a result of Jones' initiative, the first filing and approval of commercial
insurance for the cannabis industry was announced in November of last year and the first surety bond program for the industry was announced in February. Today's announcement is another first - the first insurance for commercial landlords renting to cannabis businesses. The availability of this insurance will reduce barriers to obtaining leased space faced by the cannabis industry. Last week, Commissioner Jones renewed his call for insurers to offer insurance products for California's legalized cannabis industry in the wake of published reports that President Trump has abandoned Attorney General Jeff Sessions' policy on federal law enforcement of cannabis. Jones sent a formal letter to California insurers encouraging them to fill insurance gaps for California's cannabis businesses. Jones has convened meetings between commercial insurance executives and cannabis business owners to educate the insurance industry about the sophistication, professionalism and risk management of the cannabis industry. Jones has also organized tours for insurance executives at cannabis businesses. In October of last year, Jones held a first-in-the-nation public hearing to identify insurance gaps faced by the cannabis industry. Cannabis businesses and insurance industry representatives testified about the limited availability of insurance for cannabis businesses. The hearing revealed that while there is insurance available from surplus lines insurers, coverage is limited in scope and, until the approval announced last November, commercial carriers were not yet writing insurance. Jones also announced that department staff would be allocated to expedite cannabis insurance filings.

Remembering Tami McLarty By Bryan Harrison, Association News Network Publisher
As I knew her, Tami McLarty was always so full of life. While I really never got to know her as well as I would have liked, every event she participated in with the SCA was brighter for her being there. She was kind, fun, and engaging. I can say that she loved being out on the golf course. Golf tournaments were the time we could most expect to have the pleasure of her company. From an outsider’s perspective, she didn’t suffer fools, but, at the same time, knew how to have a good time. Her vibrancy was memorable. I was saddened at the news of her passing, as she was clearly one of the good ones. Joan Barrett wrote about her back in 2009. I have included portions of that interview in her In Memoriam as I felt it may offer a glimpse into her viewpoint on the world. She will certainly be missed. Summer continues in the Northern California claims association community. Baseball and golf will be featured in July, with the 25th annual CCNC happening in August. This week kicks it off! There are NO LUNCHEON MEETINGS this month, or in August. However, this Friday, July 13, 2018, join the Sacramento Claims Association for their annual SCA Family Night at the Rivercats baseball game. This is always a fun event, and should be even better this time around. In fact, word has it that one of our own will be singing the National Anthem! Go to: SacramentoClaims.org to sign up and/ or sponsor the event. Friday, July 27th marks the date for the 17th annual East Bay Claims Association Golf Tournament, being held once again at the ever popular Eagle Vines Golf Course in Napa. It’s an ‘80s theme, so should be a blast! Go to: EastBayClaims.org to sign-up to play or sponsor that now. Mid-Valley Claims Association is taking July off, and encourages all members to attend the Claims Conference of N. Calif. Aug 28-30th i Tahoe. September 21st marks the date for the first-ever MVCA Bowling Tournament! Plan now to join in. Go to MidValleyClaims. org for more. As just mentioned, CCNC is celebrating their 25th “Silver-Lining” anniversary event August 28-30th at Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe. As a founding member of the planning committee, CCNC holds a spot near and dear to my heart. Please join us for this very special event. May we all have the capacity to see, hear and enjoy those we revere in this life,
Bryan

Membership Drive for 2018 Is On! - Join/Renew Now The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested $10 donation going to the charitable fund). Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Sign up or renew now at www.SacramentoClaims.org.
