he World Series is behind us and, even though the Boston Red Sox are not my favorite team, and I have several good friends that are Dodgers fans, I gotta say… WOW! That was impressive! The three games I watched this weekend were the only ones I SCA President watched ALL season, and I had a blast! To quote one of my Dodger loving friends, Steve Moore, PE, CASp Barrish Pelham & Associates, Inc. “now, moving on…” Another successful Top Golf event has been flawlessly executed by Mr. Jason Kettlehut! THANK YOU AGAIN, SIR! I wasn’t able to make this event due to a very busy life, but I was told at our last Board of Directors meeting a fun time was had by all! There was great attendance, several sponsorships, and the venue did a fantastic job. I missed seeing Mathieu Schwartz swing out of his shoes trying to hit the back screen. I also didn’t get to see if Amaya was able to repeat her double bounce shot over the concrete edge! Oh well, looks like there is always next year. With the holiday season approaching, everyone will probably become even busier if that is actually possible! So, please make sure to take care of yourself during these “holi-daze” and keep your head on straight. Unfortunately, there are no planned events for the SCA in November, which means everyone should be geared up and ready to attend the December Charities luncheon at the Firehouse in Old Town Sacramento. That’s right, we have changed venues for our annual December Charitable Giving Holiday luncheon festivities in hopes of sparking new interest and increasing attendance. We will be donating money to another worthy charity and holding elections for the 2019 SCA Board of Directors. Any of you interested in running for a position on the Board of Directors, or considering it, please complete an application available on our web site. This is a fantastic opportunity to get more involved with the SCA and help us to plan the future of our association! Don’t forget…we will also be conducting our annual Sacramento Food Bank canned food drive where anyone can bring non-perishable food items to the luncheon. “Always remember and never forget” my office door is open, so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I’m really looking forward to seeing all of you again!

California Residents Forced To Evacuate Could Tap Insurance for Cost Reimbursement

Insurance may help evacuated residents even if homes are not damaged

BUTTE/LOS ANGELES/VENTURA, Calif. — Thousands of residents from Butte, Los Angeles, and Ventura counties ordered to evacuate due to wildfires may have homeowner or renter insurance coverage to help with evacuation and relocation costs, even if their homes are not damaged or destroyed, and in many cases no deductible is required. “With sometimes only minutes to evacuate, residents often escape with only the clothes on their backs,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “Additional living expense coverage can help ease the financial burden of evacuation and is often the first step in helping residents begin the recovery process. I urge residents to reach out to their insurer and verify their coverage to get the help they need.” Many homeowners are unaware they may have insurance cov-

erage under their homeowner and renter policies to help them with evacuation and recovery expenses under additional living expense coverage, known as ALE. ALE coverage typically includes food and housing costs, furniture rental, relocation and storage, and extra transportation expenses. The department is urging evacuees to contact their insurer to verify their ALE coverage provision, limits and learn about requirements to use the coverage. It is critical to keep all receipts and document the date, time and names of any insurance company

employees you speak to regarding your coverage and details of the conversation. Here are some tips for consumers: Policy provisions, including deductibles, vary by company, residents should check with their insurer or agent as soon as possible to confirm coverage, limits, and any other limitations and documentation requirements. Most renters’ policies also typically include ALE coverage. Consumer should make sure any insurance agent or public adjuster offering their services

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Climate scientists warn that rising global temperatures are contributing to severe weather events-fires, hurricanes, droughts, and floods-which are causing or may cause loss of life, injuries, property damage, and economic disruptions. Many residents may not be aware that flood damage is not covered by traditional homeowners’ insurance.

Now, more than ever, is the time for consumers to evaluate their risk and consider purchasing flood insurance to protect their assets. “Flood insurance may be all that stands between you and devastating financial losses,” said Commissioner Jones. “As we move into the rainy season, I urge homeowners to review their coverage needs and consider a flood insurance policy.

Consumers need to know their risks and prepare before disaster strikes.” Flood insurance is available through the Federal Flood Insurance Program and must be in force for 30 days prior to a flood, so experts are suggesting consumers, including those in low-risk areas consider purchasing coverage well before storms hit. The Department of Insurance encourages consumers to review existing homeowner coverage to make sure they understand what is and is not covered when rain storms cause damage other than flooding from rising water. The commissioner also advises consumers to prepare for potential disaster by using their smart phone to perform a home inventory to document their belongings and store it in your cloud along with

Don’t forget copies of insurance policies, important papers and a photo or video inventory of your possessions. Keep all receipts accrued during the evacuation. An inventory can be completed quickly and easily on your smart phone and safely stored in the Cloud.

SCA Top Golf Always an Adventure!

Roseville, CA — The third annual Sacramento Claims Association Top Golf Adventure was held here Thursday, October 11, 2018. Always a fun event, the now-entrenched tradition brought out a good mix of members and guests, including numerous adjusters, as well as vendor representatives to the industry. SCA Social Committee Events Coordinator, Jason Kettlehut, handled the details for the event, with sponsorships from his company, Water Smoke & Mold Removal, as well as 91 Plumbing, ATI and Lawton Construction & Restoration. A nice selection of appetizers and a drink ticket were provided for each participant. Back on the top floor for this one, participants got to do their best to hit the back wall, aim for targets, or play any number of the computer-enhanced golf games, all while socializing and visiting with work associates, friends and clients. “Thanks to all our sponsors, and to everyone who came out for this one,” Kettlehut said. “We really appreciate the support for the SCA.”

Smart Home Device Technology Now Warns Against Threats of Water Damage The functionality and use of smart home devices is all the rage. From smart doorbells, smart speakers, smart thermostats, laundry appliances and more, control of the household from a handheld device has never been greater - until now. With home safety and security in mind, an all-new smart device is now available; one that could alert you to the threat of water damage, help save water, and monitor the whole home for the smallest of leaks. The new device, called FLO Microleak™ technology, actively monitors the integrity of a home’s entire water system, and can alert users when it uncovers even the smallest leak. FLO’s mobile app makes it easy to monitor and control your water system from anywhere in the world.

American Leak Detection (ALD), announced a strategic partnership with Flo Technologies, Inc. to provide distribution, pin-point leak detection and repair capabilities for its Flo smart home water security and conservation system. Its partnership with ALD provides Flo with the ability to offer customers installation and repair capabilities when issues are detected, making it the first end-to-end solution for home leak detection, able to prevent, detect and repair faulty plumbing all while saving money and the environment. ALD and Flo Technologies will be partnering to offer consumers and insurance providers a one stop capability for the purchase and installation of Flo with proactive maintenance of home water systems.

Flo's technology and approach reportedly differs from other systems in the following ways: Preventative Technology - Most systems use point moisture sensors or basic water metering technology limited to flow to detect leaks after-the-fact, while Flo measures all vital characteristics in real-time, including water pressure, temperature and flow rates in the water system to detect vulnerabilities and prevent damage. Multi-Sensor Approach - Flo is the only system to monitor water pressure, which is both a cause of damage and the only way to accurately detect leaks as small as a drop or two per minute. Learning Algorithms - FloSense™ machine learning technology personalizes Flo's conservation and security monitoring to the individual home.

Proactive System-wide - Unlike a multitude of individual point moisture sensors that have to be placed in perceived trouble areas, a single Flo device works throughout the home. Its Microleak™ technology proactively checks for the smallest vulnerabilities anywhere in the home water system. Water Shut-off - If something critical happens, Flo can alert users and stop the water with or without their input. Shut-off can be automatic or enabled remotely after an alert. Visible & Invisible Waste - Can detect visible water wastage such as toilets running as well as invisible ones like leaks behind the wall. Flo Technologies is the company behind the Flo Smart Home leak detection system is rolling out a new reimbursement program. continued page 11

The devastation caused by extreme fires in California continues with the Butte Fire, leveling the City of Paradise, and the Woolsey Fire in the South-land that has caused extreme damage, as well. The heartbreaking loss for so many

affects us all, whether through family and friend ties, or even just as members of the broader community. The tinderbox that our state has become following so many years of drought, with not much relief, has shifted authorities to view the “fire season” now as a year-round reality. Relief efforts for the folks in Paradise are in high-gear. Organizations all around are assisting with basics for folks who really have lost all their worldly possessions. So, what can we do? The SacBee published an article update on donations and such, stating that warehouses are already full of item. The article also stated some solutions: “The impulse from people to help is incredible; it’s very strong, but the best way to do so is by donating through the Habitat for Humanity fund-raiser or through the Red Cross,” said Chuck Smith, public information officer for Sutter County, which also has opened a shelter, as reported by The Marysville Appeal-Democrat. “Cash donations and gift cards offer more flexibility,” Smith said, according to the publication. “Gift cards to places like Target or Walmart can help someone buy clothes or other items they might have left out of their go-bags.” Gift cards for gas stations, supermarkets and pharmacies also can be useful for evacuees, said Stephanie Hayden, of Hope Center, which organizes donations in Oroville, California, reported The Redding Record-Searchlight. Hayden said shelters do still need some specific items, such as new underclothes — particularly for women — backpacks, duffle bags and luggage, reported the publication.

Upcoming Association-related activities include the following:

East Bay Claims Association is holding their third annual Bowling Tournament Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Danville Bowl. Net proceeds will go to the EBCA Charitable Fund; Mid-Valley Claims Association is featuring their regular luncheon this Friday, November 16th at Dave Wong’s Restaurant in Stockton. Guest speaker will be Mr. Garrett McGinn, of Digistream, with his presentation “Social Media/Cyber Investigations and Geolocation in the Real World”; Sacramento Claims Association has no events in November, but is holding their annual Holiday Giving Luncheon at a special venue this year - The Firehouse, in Old Sacramento. EBCA and MVCA also have holiday luncheon festivities planned. East Bay’s is Wed., December 12th at Zio Fraedo’s in Pleasant Hill. Mid-Valley Claims will be Friday, December 21, 2018 at Dave Wong’s. Please do what you can to support all these events. Peace and solace to all those who are suffering so.

New Smart Home Tech continued from page 8

HomeProtect is a unique program that will reimburse homeowners for their insurance deductibles if their Flo-equipped home suffers major water damage. The Flo device utilizes pressure, temperature, and flow sensors along with proprietary machine learning to detect leaks as small as a drop per minute anywhere in the home’s water system. Flo then also has proactive technologies that monitor the home in real time as well as a whole-home test done to ensure the home is leak free and protected. Flo says that, on average, 13 percent of a home’s water is lost to leaks and over $8,500 is paid per water damage claim in the U.S. Gabriel Halimi, CEO and Cofounder of Flo Technologies, said: “Water damage is the leading cause of preventable homeowner’s insurance claims every year, costing over $9 billion annually. “We’ve analyzed the results from our diverse customer base and proved our initial hypothesis: The Flo System’s proactive technology helps dramatically reduce the likelihood of water damage. “With this data,” he continued, “we can now stand behind our customers in an unprecedented way. We are so confident in the Flo system that we will refund customers’ deductibles in the unlikely event their Flo-equipped home suffers major damage that Flo should have prevented. We are excited to offer our customers this added layer of protection as we further Flo’s mission of preventing costly water damage and water loss.” For a small monthly fee, Flo is offering its HomeProtect subscribers an additional layer of

protection, including: A water damage prevention guarantee; Proactive Monitoring by Flo’s experienced support team, as well as Live Chat Support; Access to Flo’s Water Concierge to answer questions about your home’s water system and help resolve water and plumbing issues (whether or not the issues involve the Flo System); An extended 3-year product warranty; Access to enhanced analysis and information about water usage, including usage per water fixture (currently in beta); and access to the Flo Standard Plan, which comes with every Flo device purchase. Flo is also offering a Certified Letter for Insurance purposes that may help reduce monthly homeowners insurance costs (depending on your insurance provider). “ALD's partnership is the industry’s first end-to-end solution for leak prevention, detection, and repair,” says Monte Routon. “Together, we’ll bring you water damage protection solutions that save you time and money, while also saving water and protecting our environment,” he added. “Utilizing American Leak Detection™ for your brand new FLO device installation allows our clients to feel confident that they’re making the right choice. Our superior leak detection and repair services are better than ever with the smart technology of FLO.”

Earlybirds! Join/Renew Your SCA Membership for 2019 Now!

The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested $10 donation going to the charitable fund). Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Sign up or renew now at www.SacramentoClaims.org.
