December 2018 Message from SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp
We snuck by Halloween! We chewed our way through Thanksgiving! And now everyone is gearing up for the big duo…Christmas and New Years! Why is it that Christmas and New Years are so much more work for everyone than the other holidays? I think it’s because the New Year is looming and we have to successfully wrap things up in a pretty package with a large bow in order to SCA President make room for new opportunities and adventures Steve Moore, PE, CASp in 2019! Well, that is just what your Sacramento Barrish Pelham & Associates, Inc. Claims Association is going to do! A very successful 2018 will wrap up with our December Giving luncheon on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at the Firehouse Restaurant. A lot of great things will be happening that day! We will start the event by holding our annual Elections for those current Members who are interested in joining the Board of Directors (BOD). It is a great opportunity to really see what the SCA BOD is doing for its Members and the Association as a whole. Another very important item for the December luncheon is the SCA’s second of two annual monetary donations to a local charity. Our first donation for 2018 went to the Sacramento Fire Fighters Burn Institute at our annual golf tournament this past May. With the Camp Fire thankfully behind us, we are considering having our second donation going towards ongoing relief efforts. The SCA Winter Gala event is scheduled for Saturday, January 26, 2019. The phenomenal Jason Kettlehut and his Social committee have promised it will once again be a fantastic event! For more information about the event and to purchase tickets please visit the SCA website at www.sacramentoclaims.org. I am looking forward to spending another fun evening with all of you! Hope to see you there! The SCA annual Membership drive is currently in full swing! If you are an existing Member, you need to make sure and get your dues in for 2019 so you can attend the Winter Gala and the Golf Tournament. If you are considering becoming a new Member of the SCA now would be a perfect opportunity! Please do not hesitate to contact anyone on the Board of Directors or visit our website for more information. Finally, for both existing and new Members, the early bird special is nearly over so please try and take advantage of the lower pricing. THANK YOU!! to the SCA Board of Directors and the Membership for making 2018 a huge success! THANK YOU AGAIN!! for making my job as President such a worthwhile and fun adventure in 2018! I hope all of you can successfully wrap up 2018 into perfect bow topped packages and make room for an even better 2019! Happy Holidays and hopefully I will see you soon!

Online homeowner insurance pricing tool helps residents find coverage
Convenient online tool provides price comparison and coverage information
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - As survivors of the Camp and Woolsey wildfires begin the long road to recovery from the recent devastating wildfires that have so far tragically killed 84 people and destroyed more than 12,000 homes, other homeowners in wildfire areas may find themselves shopping for coverage when rates increase or they receive non-renewal notices, as some insurers limit their underwriting. To help consumers shop for the most coverage at the best price, the department has a convenient, easy-to-use online price comparison tool available. The homeowner insurance comparison tool is designed to take some of the guesswork out of shopping for insurance by allowing consumers to quickly and easily make comparisons of rates from both national and local insurance companies. “Finding the best coverage for your needs starts by being well informed,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “As the number and severity of wildfires grows and some insurers limit their underwriting, it is important for consumers to shop around for the most coverage they can afford and this online tool provides a wealth of information to help them in that search.” While this tool does not provide actual premium quotes, it does provide each company’s average premium and a toll-free number and website address for consumers to ask questions about available discounts or credits and receive an actual premium quote. The tool also includes a link to the specific company’s performance based on the consumer complaint study. Consumers enter their county and nearest city, type and amount of coverage, and age of the home to compare estimated premiums. Homeowners should compare prices for various insurers along with the coverage features, limits, and exclusions.

Degenkolb Engineers and Barrish Pelham Consulting Engineers Announce Merger San Francisco based structural engineering firm Degenkolb Engineers (Degenkolb) and Sacramento based structural engineering firm Barrish Pelham Consulting Engineers (Barrish Pelham) signed a Purchase Agreement to complete an the acquisition/merger on October 1, 2018. Barrish Pelham’s 22 employees joined Degenkolb, which will now have 180 employees in seven offices throughout the Western Region of the United States. The agreement includes current Barrish Pelham Principals retaining their positions, serving in the same capacity with Degenkolb. The acquisition effectively expands Degenkolb’s Sacramento presence while increasing its portfolio and experience in the K-12 education market and forensics investigation. Degenkolb will operate in Sacramento as “Barrish Pelham, a Degenkolb Company.” The firm’s seven offices are located in: San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Tahoe/Reno, as well Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego. “This is a great time for Degenkolb and Barrish Pelham,” stated Degenkolb CEO, Stacy Bartoletti. “(Historically), we have collaborated in the past, sharing staff on projects, and working together through the Structural Engineers Association of California and Applied Technology Council,” Mr. Bartoletti explained. “The Barrish Pelham staff embodies the same Degenkolb values of service and excellence that our clients have come to expect, and we’ll now have that resource in the greater Central Valley region,” he surmised. Barrish Pelham is a 73 years old structural engineering firm headquartered in Sacramento, California, with strong portfolios of forensics investigation, reconstruction engineering for damaged buildings, educational and healthcare facilities. Since October 2017, Jason Scanlan served as President; and Stephen Pelham served as Chairman. “We have known, worked with, and respected Degenkolb Engineers and their leadership for many years,” stated Barrish Pelham Chairman, Steve Pelham. “This is the next logical step in continuance of
Barrish Pelham’s expertise, integrity, and service to our clients,” he added. “Barrish Pelham is truly excited to join the Degenkolb family, extending both the bandwidth and expertise of locally based structural engineering services in California’s Central Valley.” Degenkolb previously opened a small Sacramento office and those employees will join the Barrish Pelham staff in a combined office at 3001 E. Street, Sacramento CA 95816. Founded in 1940, Degenkolb Engineers’ practice reflects more than seven decades of commitment to technical expertise, exceptional client service through close collaboration, and life-long learning. “Our award-winning structural designs have saved clients hundreds of millions of dollars and are delivered by taking full advantage of our expertise and experience,” Baroletti said. Barrish Pelham, a Degenkolb Company, may be reached at: 916-4189100, or online at: www.Barrish.com.

The combination solidifies EFI Global’s Terri and Mike OConnor position as a premier global consulting firm in engineering, fire investigation, environmental health and safety, and specialty services. On a local level, the change is reflected in the long-standing local engineering firm that had been OConnor Engineers. Having merged with Unified a little more than two years ago, OConnor now becomes EFI Global. Terri D. OConnor serves as the District Manager Northern California/Nevada/Hawaii for EFI Global, Inc. The local contact information remains the same: 1172 National Drive, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95834; 916-640-0640; with a new web site and email address - Terri.OConnor@efiglobal.com; www.efiglobal.com. Insurance commissioner calls on industry to ease inventory requirement for 2018 wildfire survivors SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Due to the staggering losses suffered by thousands of residents from the 2018 wildfires, Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones has asked insurers to assist overwhelmed wildfire survivors by voluntarily easing detailed personal property home inventory requirements and, following the lead of other insurers, providing at least 75 percent and up to 100 percent of contents (personal property) coverage limits without the submission of a detailed inventory. The notice issued October 4, 2018, acknowledges that the department is aware of and applauds the efforts of certain insurers that have already gone above and beyond the Volun-
tary Expedited Claims Handling Procedures and have made significant efforts to assist and accommodate survivors by offering, in some cases, up to 100 percent contents limits payment without a personal property inventory. quently completes a full inventory. “The Carr and Mendocino Complex fires rank among the most destructive wildfires in California’s history,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, even before the Butte County Camp Fire. “Entire communities were decimated, with residents suffering staggering losses of not only property, but tragically loss of life and injuries. I’m asking property insurers to ease the burden on traumatized survivors by voluntarily providing at least 75 percent of contents coverage without the onerous requirement of a detailed home inventory, so survivors may get on with patching their lives back together.”
The commissioner’s request applies to all insured homes that suffered a total loss, unless the insurer has reason to believe the home was not furnished. The department advises policyholders already working with a claims adjuster to develop a settlement plan that best serves their needs, which may include taking the time to complete a personal property home inventory.
