February 2019 Message from SCA President, Steve Moore, PE, CASp

The Superbowl is behind us and, WOW!, Boston fans have another great reason to celebrate! Not only did their Red Sox win the World Series, but Tom Brady and the Patriots continued their dynasty! I’m not necessarily a Boston fan, but I am a fan of continued greatness.

SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp

Speaking of GREATNESS, the SCA Winter Gala was fantastic! JASON KETTLEHUT, Tami Umland, and Nannette Hay put together another fun and truly memorable night. Jack Corry was beautifully honored as this year’s recipient of the SCA Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations again to Jack in his retirement and THANK YOU! for all of your support and wisdom over the years on the SCA Board of Directors. To view some wonderful photos of the Winter Party, taken by our own Bryan Harrison, please go to page 6. A complete photo gallery is also posted on our website: www.SacrametnoClaims.org. Although there is nothing planned for the SCA in February, we will be making up for that in March. Plan now to join us Thursday, March 21, as the SCA will be hosting what has become an annual event: the March Madness Social at the Blue Cue. The event will run from 4:00 pm to 7:00pm and has been a really fun time. We will have March madness brackets available to fill out for $5 each. You can bring in your own bracket, just please make sure it is up to the minute with teams. Please visit our website for more information on ticket costs. you’ll find a bit more detail on page 5 of this issue, as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone there, especially the reigning Bracket Champion, Donovan! Continuing on with the madness, the SCA is having a March Madness Membership Drive! That’s right, if you haven’t renewed your SCA Membership, please do so now. Remember, please, you must have your Membership dues paid to participate in the Golf Tournament in May. We would like to see our membership roster grow substantially by the March mixer. Visit our website for more information. A little bird told me the theme for this year’s golf tournament will be “Viva Las Vegas”. Looking forward to seeing all of you very soon!

2019 SCA Membership! Join/Renew for 2019 NOW!

Annual Membership earns discounts, includes priority privileges and helps fund the organization The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested Jump On-Board NOW! $10 donation going to the charitable fund). Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Go to www.SacramentoClaims.org

Commissioner Lara Announces New Members of Department of Insurance Executive Team Names first Latina chief deputy in Department’s history and nation’s first executive-level position to fight climate change SACRAMENTO, CA — Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced new members of his executive team, including the first Latina chief deputy in the history of the Department of Insurance. The new executive team members join an existing leadership team that oversees the nation’s largest state consumer protection agency. Commissioner Lara swore in the new members after taking office on January 7. “I am proud of naming our first Latina chief deputy in the Department’s history because I believe all levels of government should reflect California’s diverse communities,” said Commissioner Lara. “Our team will embrace innovation, with the first in the nation executive-level position engaging the insurance industry in the fight against climate change. Protecting California’s consumers demands we confront the growing threats

from wildfires, fraud, and the rising cost of health care in partnership with the Governor and Legislature.” Chief Deputy Catalina Hayes-

of Speaker Toni Atkins, served as Legislative Director in the Office of California State Senator Ricardo Lara, and as Legislative Aide in the Office of California State

Bautista joins the Department of Insurance after serving as Deputy Legislative Affairs Secretary in the Office of Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. She previously served as Deputy Secretary for Legislative Affairs at the California Environmental Protection Agency, was a principal consultant in the Office

Assemblymember Fiona Ma. Senior Deputy Commissioner and Legislative Director Michael Martinez rejoins the Department of Insurance, where he served as Deputy Insurance Commissioner and Legislative Director under Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. He was previously a Deputy Legislative Affairs Secretary and Deputy Appointments Secretary in the Office of Governor Brown. Michael Peterson will serve as Deputy Commissioner for Climate and Sustainability, the nation’s first executive-level position focused on engaging the insurance industry in the fight against climate change. He previously served as legislative consultant to Senator Lara, focusing on climate change, natural resources and

energy policy, and as a consultant for the California State Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water. Director of Community Outreach Julia Juarez will lead the Department’s engagement with California communities. She previously served as District Director for Senator Lara when he represented the 33rd Senate District. Special Assistant David Green joins the Department after serving in the Capitol office of Senator Lara. Michael Soller will serve as Deputy Commissioner for Communications and Press Relations (Northern California). He previously served as Communications Director to Senator Lara and as Communications Director for the California Democratic Party under former Chairman and Senate President pro Tempore-Emeritus John Burton. Commissioner Lara is the eighth Insurance Commissioner of California since voters created the position in 1988, and the first openly LGBTQ person to be elected to statewide office in California. The more than 1,300 employees of the Department of Insurance work to protect Californians from unfair insurance practices and fraud, preserve communities and businesses, and prevent losses through innovative approaches.
