March 2019 Message from SCA President, Steve Moore, PE, CASp

Join us as March Madness gets underway! The SCA is gathering for our third annual March Madness Mixer event at the Blue Cue in downtown Sacramento Thursday, March 28th. It’ll be down to the Sweet Sixteen, so bring your brackets if you have them and join in on ours.

SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp

Good times, appetizers, pool and camaraderie. This event, which will run from 4:30 pm to 7:30pm, has become a look-forward-to fun time. We will have March madness brackets available to fill out for $5 each. You can bring in your own bracket, just please make sure it is up to the minute with teams. Please go to page 5 of this issue for more information on ticket costs. We ask that you secure your spot to attend on our sit: SacramentoClaims.org. Looking forward to seeing everyone there, especially the reigning Bracket Champion, Donovan!

Continuing on with the madness, the SCA is having a March Madness Membership Drive! That’s right, if you haven’t renewed your SCA Membership, please do so now. Remember, please, you must have your Membership dues paid to participate in the Golf Tournament in May. We would like to see our membership roster grow substantially by the March mixer. Thursday, April 18, 2019 will be the first SCA luncheon meeting of the year. We are very pleased to present Mr. Hector Alvarez, CTM, with a detailed look at Safety on the Job Site. We’re also excited to return to The Firehouse, in Old Sac, for this one. The purchase page is up on the web site, so please secure your spot now. Always great to reconvene with our members in the luncheon business setting.

Our stellar Golf Chair (and SCA VP), Mathieu Schwartz, has all the pieces in place for this year’s big tournament event. We are pleased to be returning to Turkey Creek Golf Course in Lincoln Friday, May 17th. Shotgun start has been bumped back a half hour to 9:30 a.m. Registration starts at 7am. Foursomes, sponsorships and more are available for purchase on our site, as well. Please visit the website for more information. Theme for this year’s golf tournament is “Viva Las Vegas”! Looking forward to seeing all of you very soon!

RGL Forensics Merges with Baker Tilly, just as Barrish Pelham becomes part of Degenkolb Engineers

Barrish Pelham’s Steve Moore, PE, CASp

San Francisco based structural engineering firm Degenkolb Engineers (Degenkolb) and Sacramento based structural engineering firm Barrish Pelham Consulting Engineers (Barrish Pelham) signed a Purchase Agreement and closing on the acquisition in October, 2018. Barrish Pelham’s 22 employees, including SCA President, Steve Moore, have joined Degenkolb, which now has 180 employees in seven offices.

The acquisition expands Degenkolb’s Sacramento presence while increasing its portfolio and experience in the K-12 education market, and forensics investigation. Degenkolb operates in Sacramento as “Barrish Pelham, a Degenkolb Company.”

“This is a great time for Degenkolb and Barrish Pelham. As firm’s we have collaborated in the past, sharing staff on projects and working together through the Structural Engineers Association of California and Applied Technology Council,” stated Degenkolb CEO, Stacy Bartoletti. “The Barrish Pelham staff embodies the same Degenkolb values of service and excellence that our clients have come to expect and we’ll now have that resource in the greater Central Valley region.“

Barrish Pelham is a 73 years old structural engineering firm headquartered in Sacramento, California, with strong portfolios of forensics investigation, reconstruction engineering for damaged buildings, educational and healthcare facilities. Since October 2017, Jason Scanlan has served as President; and Stephen Pelham has served as Chairman. “We have known, worked with, and respected Degenkolb Engineers and their leadership for many years. This is the next logical step in continuance of Barrish Pelham’s expertise, integrity, and service to our clients. Barrish Pelham is truly excited to join the Degenkolb family extending both the bandwidth and expertise of locally based structural engineering services in California’s Central Valley,” stated Barrish Pelham Chairman, Steve Pelham. Degenkolb previously opened a small Sacramento office and those employees will join the Barrish Pelham staff in a combined office at 3001 E. Street, Sacramento CA 95816.

Degenkolb Engineers is a San Francisco headquartered structural engineering company. Founded in 1940, Degenkolb Engineers’ practice reflects more than seven decades of commitment to technical expertise, exceptional client service through close collaboration, and life-long learning. Our award-winning structural designs have saved clients hundreds of millions of dollars and are delivered by taking full advantage of our expertise and experience.

Forensic Accounting firm, RGL Forensics, is pleased to announce that they are now part of Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (trading as Baker Tilly). Accounting and advisory firm Baker Tilly Virchow Krause and the global financial investigations firm RGL Forensics have merged. “We were really looking at what our next 20 years could provide ... we’ve had a great journey, growing and expanding internationBaker Tilly’s Jim McCurley, CPA ally .. and we’ve been looking at how we can continue along that path’’, says Angela MacPhee, partner and head of the Global Forensics practice at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause and former CEO of RGL Forensics. The enlarged group will help both companies expand nationally as well as provide Baker Tilley with an international presence. Long time Treasurer for the Sacramento Claims Association, Jim McCurley, says that the change, which occurred late last year, has gone pretty smoothly, overall. Please note Jim’s new email contact information: Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP, (916) 637 9052, or his cell, at (916) 342 1465, or jim.mccurley@bakertilly.com | bakertilly.com

Workplace Violence & Prevention Hector Alvarez at April 18, 2019 SCA Luncheon Working in the “Field" - Strategies to help keep you and your employees safe

Presentation to focus on the work of many SCA members dealing with the CAMP and CARR fires.

Employees who work away from the structure and support of an office environment face a wide range of challenges, hazards and potential threats, and very often they face these situations alone. Recognizing and learning how to avoid putting oneself in harm’s way, as well as gaining the knowledge to deal with those times when avoidance isn’t feasible, is the essence of what may be gained in this session. Please join the Sacramento Claims Association in welcoming special guest speaker for our April 18, 2019 luncheon meeting, Mr. Hector R. Alvarez, CTM, of Alvarez Associates, LLC - Workplace Threat Management. Mr. Alvarez’ presentation is intended to help your employees recognize these hazards, so they can be avoided. We also give them specific tips and strategies on how to respond to unwanted situations and challenging people. Mr. Alvarez is a security expert who specializes in workplace violence prevention, a Certified Threat Manager™ by the

Association of Threat Assessment Professionals and an Instructor in Mental Health First Aid. He has built over 25 years of experience from serving as Security Director protecting one of our nation’s most sensitive critical infrastructures, to working as a city police officer and as a professional consultant. He understands the challenges organizations face when addressing the threats of violence because he has responded to them. He has personally assessed and/ or responded to thousands of potentially violent situations, developed numerous violence prevention programs and trained tens of thousands of employees and managers in the areas of crisis intervention, violence prevention, domestic terrorism and emergency management.

Plan now to attend the first SCA Luncheon Meeting of the year,

Sacramento Claims Association

2019 SCA Membership! Join/Renew for 2019 NOW!

Annual Membership earns discounts, includes priority privileges and helps fund the organization The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested Jump On-Board NOW! $10 donation going to the charitable fund). Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Go to www.SacramentoClaims.org

Department of Insurance assists with Russian River flood recovery, urges state homeowners to consider flood insurance

Reminder that standard homeowners’ insurance does not cover flood or mudslide damage SACRAMENTO, CA — In the wake of record rains and recent flooding Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara dispatched Department of Insurance staff to Sonoma County to assist with recovery efforts. With many Californians not aware that traditional homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, he urged homeowners to consider purchasing flood insurance. Department staff are available to answer questions through Saturday,

March 9 at the Local Assistance Center in Guerneville or by phone at 800-927-4357 following the winter storms and Russian River flooding that inundated 2,600 homes and businesses and damaged or destroyed many automobiles. “Climate change is driving more extreme weather events than ever, including floods,” said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. “We want to make sure people have the coverage they need before the next

storm puts their home at risk. Having flood insurance may be the difference between recovering quickly from a catastrophic event or suffering devastating financial losses.” Flood insurance is available through the Federal Flood Insurance Program and must be in force for 30 days prior to a flood, in most cases. February was the sixth wettest month on record, and it is not too late for homeowners to assess their risk for flooding and ensure they

have the coverage they need to protect their home which is typically a family’s most valuable financial asset. The department has a number of resources to help consumers with insurance coverage or claim questions. Consumers with questions or needing assistance should call the consumer hotline at 800-927-4357.

Department assists wildfires survivors at insurance claims workshops

Survivors encouraged to call the department’s Consumer Hotline for assistance during their recovery AGOURA HILLS, CA — Consumer service representatives from the California Department of Insurance met with dozens of Woolsey and Hill fire survivors at an insurance claims workshop hosted by Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara this past Saturday. The week before Commissioner Lara hosted a similar workshop in Chico where the department was able to meet with over 500 Camp fire survivors. “We want wildfire survivors to know that we are here for the long haul not just the weekend,” said Commissioner Lara. “Recovering from these devastating fires is a long and emotional process and we are committed to helping every survivor with their insurance claims and questions.” The department wants to make

sure that residents affected by the wildfires are aware of the resources available during the rebuilding and recovery process. If survivors were unable to make it to the workshop but have questions, they are encouraged to call the department’s toll-free Consumer Hotline at 800-927-4357.
