April 2019 Message from SCA President, Steve Moore, PE, CASp
Brackets? Brackets are a very big deal right now, because we are right in the middle of March Madness! The SCA recently held its March Madness Mixer at the Blue Cue and it was once again very well attended. A huge THANK YOU to Jim McCurley who coordinated the event a made it happen. The “new” crowd, as I like to call them, once again showed up in support of our association and we greatly appreciate it. We even saw several long-time members that peeked their head in for a short visit.
We had 15 entries into the Bracket Pool, which I believe is going to be very tough to win. Several of our members claimed to be rookies in the bracket pool, or they claim they don’t know what they are doing. Why do I have the distinct feeling one of these folks will win it all! I will post the results after each weekend on the SCA Facebook page, so keep a look out. Being aware? It looks like the next event up for the SCA is the annual April Education Luncheon to be held on Thursday, April 18. We are super excited about this year’s speaker, Mr. Hector Alvarez! Hector’s presentation will be on work place violence and prevention, including situations outside the office such as at a building site. With so many of our members involved with the CAMP and CARR fires, being on site in such difficult conditions, individuals need to be aware of their surroundings and any potential threats to their safety.
SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp
We will hold the presentation at the Firehouse in the lower room where we had our December luncheon. Please visit our website for further information and to make your lunch reservations.
Personally, I am really excited about Hector’s presentation and I heard that our own Secretary, Rob Sedgwick has volunteered with the utmost conviction to be a “practice dummy” for any self-defense moves Hector might show us! Thank you so much Rob! Baseball? While April brings the start of baseball season, there is another “small ball” event on the horizon for the SCA! That’s right, it’s the annual SCA Golf Tournament. Mathieu Schwartz is once again at the helm and captaining the ship! We already have our Eagle Sponsorships, nearly all of the tee boxes sold, and most of the sponsorships taken! It just keeps getting better and better! The theme for the tournament this year is “Viva Las Vegas”. This means Elvisness baby, giant dice, walking slot machines, and perhaps a mobile wedding chapel! You never know. We are at Turkey Creek

Insurance Commissioner Lara Re-Appoints Board Members for COIN & WCIRB SACRAMENTO, CA — Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced April 4, 2019 two reappointments to the California Organized Investment Network (COIN) Advisory Board and one reappointment to the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) Governing Committee. Both the COIN Advisory Board and the WCIRB Governing Committee met yesterday for the first time under Commissioner Lara’s administration. “My department is committed to socially responsible investing in our communities and environment, and to keeping the costs of workers’ compensation insurance affordable for businesses and their employees,” said Commissioner Lara. “Our board members are critical to ensuring we are accountable to the people of California.” Douglas Bystry is the President and CEO of the Clearinghouse CDFI, a for-profit community development financial institution. Mr. Bystry is considered an expert in affordable housing,
community development and New Markets Tax Credit lending. He was first appointed to the COIN Advisory Board in March 2012. Nick Roxborough is the CoManaging Partner of Los Angeles based law firm of Roxborough, Pomerance, Nye & Adreani, LLP. Over three decades, Mr. Roxborough has obtained numerous trial and appellate decisions concerning the insurance industry. He was first appointed to the COIN Advisory Board in March 2013. Mitch Steiger is the Legislative Advocate for the California Labor Federation, representing trade union interests to statewide officials and state legislators. He was first appointed to the WCIRB Governing Committee in April 2011. About COIN and the WCIRB Established in 1996, the California Organized Investment Network (COIN) guides insurers on making safe and sound investments that yield environmental benefits throughout California and social and economic benefits within the
state’s underserved communities. The COIN Advisory Board—consisting of the Insurance Commissioner and several leaders in insurance, economic development, impact investments, and consumer advocacy—provides focus and guidance to the Commissioner and COIN to meet its mission. The Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) is a private organization licensed by the Department of Insurance for the purpose of collecting, analyzing and compiling rating data, funding comes from assessments of the insurer members. All workers’ compensation insurance companies in California are required by law to be members of the bureau. Workplace Violence & Prevention Hector Alvarez at April 18, 2019 SCA Luncheon Working in the “Field" - Strategies to help keep you and your employees safe
Presentation to focus on the work of many SCA members dealing with the CAMP and CARR fires.
Employees who work away from the structure and support of an office environment face a wide range of challenges, hazards and potential threats, and very often they face these situations alone. Recognizing and learning how to avoid putting oneself in harm’s way, as well as gaining the knowledge to deal with those times when avoidance isn’t feasible, is the essence of what may be gained in this session. Please join the Sacramento Claims Association in welcoming special guest speaker for our April 18, 2019 luncheon meeting, Mr. Hector R. Alvarez, CTM, of Alvarez Associates, LLC - Workplace Threat Management. Mr. Alvarez’ presentation is intended to help your employees recognize these hazards, so they can be avoided. We also give them specific tips and strategies on how to respond to unwanted situations and challenging people. Mr. Alvarez is a security expert who specializes in workplace violence prevention, a Certified Threat Manager™ by the
Association of Threat Assessment Professionals and an Instructor in Mental Health First Aid. He has built over 25 years of experience from serving as Security Director protecting one of our nation’s most sensitive critical infrastructures, to working as a city police officer and as a professional consultant. He understands the challenges organizations face when addressing the threats of violence because he has responded to them. He has personally assessed and/ or responded to thousands of potentially violent situations, developed numerous violence prevention programs and trained tens of thousands of employees and managers in the areas of crisis intervention, violence prevention, domestic terrorism and emergency management.

2019 SCA Membership! Join/Renew for 2019 NOW!
Annual Membership earns discounts, includes priority privileges and helps fund the organization The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested Jump On-Board NOW! $10 donation going to the charitable fund). Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Go to www.SacramentoClaims.org

All about the brackets at SCA 2019 Blue Cue
March Madness The Sacramento Claims Association reconvened for another festive “Blue Cue March Madness” mixer event Thursday, March 28, 2019.
A friendly March Madness brackets pool was orchestrated once again by SCA President, Steve Moore, with winner(s) to be announced at the April 18th luncheon meeting.
A good crowd of SCA members and guests turned out for the afternoon/early evening event. Appetizers were served and each participant received two drink tickets with their admission to the event. Events such as this provide a relaxed environment for everyone to get to know one another a bit more personally. Fun was had by all!
