The Spoils of War: Finding and Returning Nazi Treasure by Kenneth Alford
Long rows of bags filled with gold coins found in the Merkers salt mine. Note: Kenneth Alford is the world’s foremost writer of Nazi treasure stories. He has spent more than 30 years researching archival material relating to the looting of art, gold and other treasures. His books include: Monetary Men, American Crimes and the Liberation of Paris, Sacking Aladdin’s Cave, Hermann Göring and the Nazi Art Collection, Civil War Museum Treasures, Allied Looting in World War II, Nazi Millionaires, Nazi Plunder and The Spoils of World War II. He is a frequent consultant for television productions around the world, and his first book, Spoils of World War II, was the subject of a History Channel documentary. His work has often uncovered lost treasures and helped to re-unite items with their rightful owners. His views are multi-dimensional in that he not only investigates the original plundering but also what happened subsequently at the end of the war—in many cases resulting in a second round of plundering and looting by certain Allied servicemen and women. The stories often start in the 1930s and do not conclude until the modern day. The following are excerpts from his books. During World War II, Nazi treasures recovered by the U.S. Army were delivered to the Foreign Exchange Depository located in Frankfurt, Germany. The first shipment to arrive was the Third Reich gold reserves taken from the salt mine in Merkers. This hoard consisted of gold bullion, gold and silver coins, platinum, jewelry and a large quantity of SS loot in bags, boxes, and parcels. Seventy-five additional shipments were received at the Depository during the remainder of 1945. They came mainly from the U.S. Zone of Occupation in Germany, but some shipments were from Austria, Czechoslovakia and other areas occupied by the U.S. Army. By the end of 1945, the Depository contained the largest single collection of wealth in the world—the gold holding alone was only second to that at Fort Knox. Deposited in the Foreign Exchange Depository as shipment 16 were the valuables from Buchenwald Concentration Camp. On April 28, 1945, Major Howard M. McBee traveled to the camp to investigate the atrocities and brutal treatment of the prisoners. Two German political prisoners told Major McBee
that a large deposit of valuable property was hidden in a cave at the stone quarry in the western part of the camp. Twenty men went to the quarry and began excavating. After three hours of difficult digging, they gained entrance into the tunnels. When all was completed, the retrieved valuables filled nine two-and-one-half ton army trucks. After clearing out the tunnels, U.S. Army engineers blasted the entrances closed. A bulldozer finished covering the opening with rocks so no one would be injured should the tunnels ever cave in. Valuable gems were separated and were placed under the command of the finance officer. The contents were astonishing: an estimated 17,102 pounds of tableware, 4,030 pounds of coins, 7,811 pounds of alarm clocks, and sadly, 134 pounds of children’s toys. Many items were identifiable as to the owners, such as a marriage certificate, passports, bank statements, bank books, graduation certificates and many Hungarian life insurance policies. It appears the Foreign Exchange Depository made an earnest attempt to return the identifiable objects from Buchenwald to the country of origin. Shipment 76 contained some of the personal items of Mrs. Adolf Hitler, the name his young mistress Eva Braun held less than 48 hours due to her suicide pact with the Führer. Based on the undercover work of U.S. Seventh Army investigators, recovered were her personal items: photographs, motion pictures depicting the life of Eva and Hitler, stamp collections, and the suit worn by Hitler during the attack on his life on July 20, 1944. One of greatest robberies by U.S. Army servicemen of all times was the theft of the Hesse Crown jewels, stolen after World War II from the Kronberg Castle northwest of Frankfurt by Major David Watson, Colonel Jack Durant and his lover Captain Kathleen Nash. The Kronberg Castle was requisitioned as a country club for U.S. Army officers, and Captain Kathleen Nash was appointed hostess of the officers’ club. In November 1945 while exploring the castle, Nash and her staff stumbled upon a wooden box full of individually brown-paper-wrapped packages containing millions of dollars’ worth of valuables.

Watson, Durant and Nash removed diamonds and other gems from settings by pushing them or cutting them loose from tiaras, necklaces and bracelets found in the packages, and then they sold the gold settings in Switzerland. In January 1946, after the three looters returned to the U.S. with the bulk of the valuables, a member of the Hesse Family, owners of Kronberg Castle, reported the missing jewels to the U.S. Looted from the Russian Army. Investigations by the Orthodox Church in Prague, Army’s Criminal Intelligence this miniature church of Division determined the irreplaceable value and magnitude of the thefts, and exquisite workmanship Watson, Durant and Nash stood about three feet tall. were thereafter arrested. The three were tried in Germany and sentenced to light prison terms. The trials were completed in the spring of 1947. The Army relentlessly attempted to recover the jewels. Half of them were recovered at the home of Nash’s sister. After a further search, the remaining bulk was traced to underground criminal elements in Chicago. Understandably, these larger and more valuable precious stones were never recovered. The most provocative treasure uncovered by my research Continued on Page 10

Decorated with a Polish coat of arms, it was stolen from the Hapsburg Family. was the fate of the Hungarian Gold Train, seized by the U.S. Army in 1945. The Presidential Advisory Commission on Holocaust Assets visited me and copied thousands of pages from my personal library. In 1998, this commission found there was “…documentary evidence that American Forces in Austria misappropriated so-called unidentifiable property of Hungarian Jews found on the Gold Train.” On May 7, 2001, the law firm of Cuneo Waldman & Gilbert filed a class-action suit in the United States District Court, Miami, on behalf of Hungarian Holocaust survivors and their heirs. $25.5 million paid into the settlement fund. This fund was allocated to pay for social welfare benefits to financially needy Hungarian Holocaust survivors. On January 31, 2006, the lead counsel wrote: “There is little question that this whole sorry episode would never have come to light had you [Kenneth D. Alford] not unearthed it. For that and for your generosity in sharing with us your time, your expertise and insights, and your files, I want to express deep gratitude on behalf of the lawyers and plaintiffs. You should be extremely proud of your role in helping to right this historic wrong.” A Synopsis of Monetary Men: In the closing days of World War II, the U.S. Government took into custody 370 tons of gold from Nazi Germany, but the gold, silver, and currency still missing is even greater. Author Ken Alford traces the recovery of more than 500 of these large caches by the Allies and then their mysterious disbursement. Among their finds, the Monetary Men of the U.S. Army uncovered 288 tons of gold, with hordes of silver, diamonds, and precious jewels in a salt mine in Merkers, Germany. They took in Holocaust valuables from Dachau and Buchenwald, Ustasha Croatian gold and Italian Fascist gold. You can furnish everything from a dorm room to a mansion, or find that missing piece of Grandmother’s china.
The signatures of William Shakespeare These are the John Hancocks (so to speak) of the great playwright William Shakespeare, who would probably would have earned a D in penmanship in school. It is safe to say that William Shakespeare is one of the most misunderstood playwrights of all time (who can’t remember struggling in high school to understand his words?) and one of the greatest wordsmiths of all time. Consequently, and in consequence of its rarity, his signature is worth millions of dollars, if you come across one by chance. But good luck on deciphering his signature; it seems he often spelled his name different ways or shortened it. A few tidbits relating to Shakespeare: *At the age of 16, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway who was 24 years old. They had twins, Judith and Hamnet, on Feb. 2, 1585. *The first recorded mention of Shakespeare and his work was a stinging criticism by poet Robert Greene who wrote in a pamphlet, “…there is an upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers, that with his Tiger’s heart wrapped in a Player’s hide, supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blank verse as the best of you: and being an absolute Johannes factotum, is in his own conceit the only Shake-scene in a country.”1 Ironically, this rebuke is Greene’s only claim to fame; it is the only

writing of his that is remembered. *Eugene Schieffelin decided to import all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays that are not native to America. Among them, Schieffelin brought the starling which has since proliferated in the millions and driven other birds to near extinction. Tragically in 1960, Eastern Airlines flight 375 crashed on take-off in Boston after running into a flock of starlings. Not Shakespeare’s fault. Since it seems Jeopardy regularly resorts to Shakespeare for a category, now is a good time to sharpen your ability to identify quotes from the bard’s plays and impress your friends. The answers are at the end.
1. “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”
2. “Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” 3. “You speak an infinite deal of nothing.” 4. “Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.”
5. “To be, or not to be: that is the question….” 6. “Though she be but little, she is fierce!” 7. “By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this

way comes.”
8. “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep….”
9. “Brevity is the soul of wit.” Considering brevity, I shall end this now, imagining Shakespeare taking a bow with a flourish. Ted Carlton of Utah correctly identified Shakespeare’s signatures. -------------1 Groats-worth of Witte, bought with a million of Repentance by Robert Greene, 1592.

Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod
Bessie Coleman with her plane in 1922.
It wasn’t enough, however, for her to earn a living by flying. There were very few U.S. airlines in those days, and there was no hope of being hired by them. For Bessie to make a career of flying, she knew she had to become a barnstormer. For that to happen, she needed more training so she headed back to France. Upon her return, Bessie Coleman became a daredevil barnstormer, performing difficult stunts and maneuvers in the old biplanes she used. The crowds loved her, as did the media, calling her “Queen Bess” because of her dominating style of performance and her dominating personality. Some said she bragged about here skills, but baseball legend Dizzy Dean has said, “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up.” For several years, Bessie performed with success while risking her life every time she climbed into a cockpit. After some initial financial success, she was able to get a used airplane, but on the way to her first performance in it, the plane malfunctioned and crashed. After several weeks of recovery, Bessie was back in the air. In addition to her accomplishment of attaining her pilot’s license, Bessie Coleman was a woman of principle. She refused to perform at segregated venues or where blacks and whites had separate entrances.2 On April 30, 1926, Bessie and her mechanic took to the air in Florida on a scouting mission for her barnstorming act to find a place where she could parachute from her plane. Even though it was recently purchased (with the help of friends), this plane had experienced mechanic problems on its way to Bessie. With her mechanic flying, Bessie unbuckled her seatbelt to lean out over the open cockpit and look at the ground. At a fatal moment, the plane went into a diving spin, and Bessie was thrown out hundreds of feet from the ground. She died instantly, and her pilot died on impact. Later, a wrench left in the engine compartment was found lodged in the gears. At the age of 34, Bessie Coleman’s life accomplishments moved into the history books. She was mourned by thousands. In 1995, the U.S. Post Office issued a Bessie Coleman 32¢ stamp, and in 2006, Bessie joined Charles Lindberg, Amelia Earhart, astronauts and many others in the National Aviation Hall of Fame. From a sharecropper’s daughter to the first female AfricanAmerican flyer, Bessie Coleman is a symbol of undaunted determination, of bravery, and of how dreams can come true. Ted Carlton of Utah and Ginnie Torbert of Hurtsboro Ala., correctly identified Bessie Coleman. ------------------
Bessie Coleman was the first African American woman to earn her pilot’s license. In fact, she was the first of all African Americans to earn a license. Further, Bessie was awarded her international pilot’s license six months before Amelia Earhart earned her U.S. pilot’s license and about two years before she earned her international license. Born on January 26, 1892 in Atlanta, Texas, into a sharecropping family with 13 kids, Bessie grew up with a desire to make her mark on life. Bessie’s father left the family early on so life was a struggle for the family. Education was sparse; yet, she learned to read and write, and she often read to her family members who could not, including her mother. She did attend one year of college but quit when there were no funds to go on. Bessie moved to Chicago and lived with brothers while working as a manicurist. Hearing stories from pilots returning from World War I, she decided she was going to fly—which was thought to be unimaginable if not impossible at the time. Due to discrimination, no flying school or pilot in the U.S. would train her. Fortunately, Bessie learned she could learn to fly in France where her race would not matter. Speaking the language would, however, so Bessie attended a language class and learned French. With her own money and the sponsorship of benefactors, she sailed to Europe and traveled to northern France to take classes at the Caudron Brother’s School of Aviation. Arriving, she must have felt a thrill of accomplishment—and some of her class members must have been shocked to see an African American woman who wanted to fly. Learning to fly in those early days of aviation was fraught with danger. Bessie learned to fly in a “…27-foot biplane that was known to fail frequently, sometimes in the air. During her training Coleman witnessed a fellow student die in a plane 1 PBS.org, American Experience, People & Events, “Bessie crash, which she described as a ‘terrible shock’ to her nerves.”1 Coleman (1892 -1926).” Even so, she persevered, and on June 15, 1921 she achieved her 2 Bessiecoleman.com dream when she earned her pilot’s license from the Fédération Credit: Aéronautique Internationale. Biography.com When Bessie left America, she went unnoticed. Returning, she was met by crowds and the media. What she had done was historic. The problem with brocanting in France is that it never ends. There is always a brocante, one way or another, be it a fair, a shop, someone’s garage, a second-hand store or warehouse... or the dumpster on every block. So if you have a brocante bug, France is the place to be for utter joy. Or if you live in France and have the brocante bug badly, the only way to stay focused and do other things like eat, work or do the daily things one must do to survive is to close your eyes, plug your ears and tie your hands behind your back. Otherwise, you will go brocante crazy living here. A demilune table. Natural unstained walnut, 1700s, perfect condition. It spotted me at an antique fair, called my name. I admired it. Did I need it? No. But when the antique dealer told me I had to have it, I resisted, walked away even— ‘cause I wasn’t looking for a demilune. He called out, “...take it, otherwise I am going to leave it.” How could I refuse? And it looks so happy in my living room. Thankfully, the brocante can create a home; it is recycling at its finest. It has helped me furnish our home and allows me a creative, fun way of working. I think I will love the brocante bug forever. ------------Corey Amaro is an American living in the south of France. THE SHOPS OF OCALA, FLORIDA
Ocala – located in central Florida, northwest of Orlando and southwest of Gainesville, off Interstate 75 – derives its name from the extinct Timucuan Indians, who called their village Ocali,
thought to mean “Big Hammock.” Modern-day Ocala was established in 1846 and was a rather unremarkable town until 1943, when Carl G. Rose created the first thoroughbred horse farm there. Many more followed his example, and today Ocala is known as the “horse capital of the world.” It isn’t densely populated (it’s just the 45th largest city in Fla.) but it’s well known to equestrians worldwide. And with horse people comes money, so Ocala has also become a

But there are other reasons why Sarasota was named Best Small City to Live by Money Magazine. Sarasota County -- which includes Venice, Northport, Longboat and Siesta Keys -- is alive with culture, sports, affordable homes, a brisk job market and great schools.

www.antiqueorientalrugs.com Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

The Scott Antique Market management is adding summer Extravaganzas to their schedule of shows in Ohio. They have leased the Fayette County Fairgrounds in Washington Court House, Ohio. The four show dates are the fifth weekend of April, the fourth weekends of June and August, plus the
first weekend in October. Show promoter Don Scott terms it as an “Antique Extravaganza at the Awesome Fayette County Fairgrounds.” Betty Scott comments, “The grand old fairgrounds have filled up nicely with exhibitors wanting booths, and there should be enough room for most of the antique dealers wanting to exhibit. Thousands of shoppers will take away treasures the exhibitors are bringing in. They will bring truckloads from all over the world; many of the antiques will end up in museums. It will be an exhibitor’s and treasure hunter’s paradise.” Don Scott added, “Over 30 years ago after starting our shows at the State Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ohio, and Atlanta, along with the start of the Springfield show, the grand old Washington Court House show emptied out. Spending the first part of my life as a professional pilot gave me the opportunity to shop antique shows from the Rose Bowl in California to the markets in Europe. During my three years flying in Saudi Arabia, I also shipped all over the Middle East.

My favorite markets were Brimfield, Massachusetts, Washington Court House Ohio, and the small markets in Afghanistan and Kuwait City. Washington Court House, however, stood out as my favorite! With the fairgrounds restored, new buildings added, the US highway 35 interchange at the show, I-71 connecting a few miles away, and the new nearby hotels will make this show wonderful for antique dealers and buyers.” The Scott show offices are buzzing with excitement. The large staff is answering the many phone lines, responding to e-mails, assigning antique dealers to spaces on charts and doing mass mailings. Obviously, the show will be larger than the great ones of many decades ago. The fairgrounds have paved the roadways and built new buildings. The food feast will require you to come with empty tummies; many food vendors will have great healthy food with all being “required to have reasonable prices.” Their plan is to keep the shoppers walking on the newly paved walkways with the antiques in the buildings, while the outside antique

dealer’s displays will be on the concrete, gravel and grass areas. Many members of the Scott family are involved with the business. Nephew Kenny Scott manages the advertising and the day-to-day operations of the Scott Antique Markets. Kenny says, “At least four Washington Court House summer antique extravaganzas are planned into perpetuity with more dates being added with demand. The show’s location is in a small county town in the rolling foothills of southwestern Ohio. It is encircled with a massive population base such as found on the West and East Coasts, including historical Cincinnati, Dayton, Springfield, Columbus, Lancaster, Xenia and many more. We will have a fleet of golf carts running shoppers to and from parking and flatbed golf carts and small trucks hauling the shopper’s antiques to their vehicles. Free VIP admission passes and hotel information is available on our
website; please go to www.scottantiquemarket.com. As always, thank you for attending the Scott Antique Markets.”
