We’re into the New Year, and by now, you’ve probably heard all of the predictions regarding what to expect in 2016. Economists have shared their predictions about global and national markets, fashionistas told us what styles and colors will be “in” this year, and other experts have chimed in about topics ranging from sports and cars to food and travel destinations. For those of us who love antiques and collectibles, trying to guess what will be “hot” in the next 12 months is not such a daunting task, especially if we look closely at cyclical cycles and take a clue from how the market has been behaving over the past year. I’m no expert at predicting the future, and I certainly wish I had a crystal ball, but between my experience as a certified auctioneer both in Pennsylvania and now in Arizona, I have a pretty good sense of what we’ll see develop in the next year. Keep in mind, lots of factors could change the course we’re on, especially if we go through another bear market, but in my opinion, these seven collectibles are worth watching in 2016:

Chinese Collectibles: We’ve seen this trend for the past three years, and it shows no sign of slowing down. Asian collectors are willing to pay top dollar for all things Oriental. And Chinese collectors can’t get enough of treasures and antiquities that were confiscated during the Cultural Revolution and exported to the U.S. This new affluent “middle class” is collecting their history and setting records while doing Ch’ing Dynasty bronze so. Our auction house in statue, $96,000. (All photos: Arizona has seen a significant Josh Nelson.) increase in the amount of Oriental items sold. Recent examples include: a bronze statue from the Ch’ing dynasty that realized $96,000; a Zitan wood chest from the Middle Qing Dynasty that sold for $10,000; a pair of Chinese Summer Palace chairs that sold for $10,000: and sterling silver enamel Chinese Foo Dogs that realized $1,100.

These vintage Star Wars figures were part of a 149-piece set that realized $1,100 at J. Levine Auction & Appraisal in 2015. Vintage Toys: No doubt, toys from the past are always fun to auction off. I always get a kick out of seeing some of the old toys from my childhood, and no matter what the era, people get nostalgic about their past. When I first started out as a young auctioneer, the big craze was 1930s Lionel & Marklin trains. Not anymore. Now the big buzz is all about 1970s and 1980s action figures. You know…Batman, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Green Lantern and the list goes on and on. Did I mention Star Wars figures from the 1970s and 1980s? They’re crushing now in auctions, and I bet they’ll continue to do well in 2016. One of the highest prices realized last year came from a 1970s Boba Fett, Darth Vader’s hired bounty hunter in The Empire Strikes Back. It sold for $27,221 in England. Art Deco: Often characterized by its bold stylized geometric forms and extravagant ornamentation, Art Deco was all the rage in the 1920s and 1930s after the world embraced Art

Nouveau. Styles come and go, but Art Deco always seems to be cool. I credit the minimalist movement for this current trend. With the simplistic designs of Art Deco, it fits the midmodernist and the minimalist trends of today’s hip and downsizing baby boomers. Recent examples of items that did well at our auction house include: a Figural Statuary Lamp attributed to Max Le Verrier (1891–1973) which realized $3,000; a reproduction of a Tamara Reproduction of a Tamara de Lempicka painting that brought $1,750, thanks to de Lempicka painting, its deco look; and a small $1,750. Walther & Sohne Uranium glass Art Deco nude lamp that realized $550. Vintage Lunchboxes: People really do collect the craziest things, and recently, we auctioned off a consignor’s collection of more than 100 vintage lunchboxes. These were mostly metal rectangular lunchboxes from the 1960s and 1970s, and boy, were we surprised with the results. In total, the auction realized $55,000, with certain “stars” stealing the show. A 1954 Superman lunchbox realized $1,200, a 1974 Underdog brought in $275 and a 1966 James Bond lunchbox saw $180. Given our experience and what I’m hearing from others in the industry, I think vintage lunchboxes will continue to do well in 2016. A resurgence from a few years back.

Retro Musical Instruments: Music is timeless, and retro guitars, saxophones, clarinets, flutes, trumpets and other instruments from the past will continue to be in demand this year. In my former life, I owned and operated a used musical instrument shop, and I was also in a band, so this is a trend I am personally interested in. Today, we are seeing the player collect some of the 1970s and ‘80s bizarre and retro guitars from the U.S. and Japan as these are still affordable but continuing to climb in value. The most sought-after guitars are commanding $20,000 to $30,000 at auction today. Examples of these include the 1950s and ‘60s Gibson Les Pauls, American Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters, Gretsch Falcons and the like. A Selmer Mark 6 saxophone is averaging about $5,000 at auction. Some Ludwig Snare drums have sold for $2,000. Look for these retro musical instruments to continue to do well in the next year. Historic Firearms: Whether they’re from the Civil War or they date back to the Old West, historic firearms do well and will continue to do well at auction this year, so long as they are in good condition and have provenance. Here in Arizona, we naturally get a lot of firearms from when the West was truly wild. Last July, we sold Bat Masterson’s 1882 .45 Colt Single Action Army Revolver for $96,000. We’ve sold several Wyatt Earp guns, including his Colt. 45-caliber revolver for $225,000 in April 2014.

Last year, this Martin Borenstein Challenge Series Love Seat sold for $4,250 at J. Levine Auction & Appraisal. Mid-Century Modern Furniture: Again, the recent minimalist movement is dictating what’s hot and what’s not, and all bets are that mid-century modern furniture will do well at auction in 2016. With or without a brand name, this style of furniture is in demand, though a brand name will definitely command more at auction. Recently, we sold a Herman Miller Eames lounge chair for $4,500, proving they are still a hot staple. We also sold a Martin Borenstein Challenge Series Living Room set consisting of a sofa, love seat and coffee table that zoomed to $14,400 by the time it was all said and done. So, there you have it. Clearly, I’m not a modern-day Nostradamus, and while we’ve auctioned off Zoltar fortune telling machines in the past, I can’t say I gained any magical ability to predict the future by doing so. But I’ve got more than a strong hunch that I’m right about these predictions. And, if I’m wrong, maybe next year, I’ll consult Zoltar first.

French Flea Market Finds by Corey Amaro

Last weekend, I came upon a dealer selling old pharmacy jars. He mentioned that he bought the entire shop’s basement. I can only imagine what a sight that must have been. The bottles are interesting with their cork tops and handwritten labels. A great collection for props in a film. Yes, I have film props in mind. I think that could be my real calling. Finding props for filmmakers. Maybe one day for Sacha*; that should keep me young. What is a dream job of yours? ----------*Sacha is Corey’s son who was recently graduated from a cinematography school. Corey Amaro is an American living in the south of France. (912) 236-2815

Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our

33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.

All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.

Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.

There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.

Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net

The Shops of Historic Senoia, Georgia Jeres.Half.10.2009_SEA

Senoia, Ga. (pronounced Se-noy -- rhymes with boy or toy) is said to be 100 years and 35 miles south of Atlanta. Home of the 2010 and 2012 Southern Living Idea Houses, Senoia is also the backdrop for over 25 feature films, including Fried Green Tomatoes and Driving Miss Daisy, as well as the popular TV shows Drop Dead Diva and The Walking Dead. Downtown Senoia was the site of the “safe haven” fictional town known as Woodbury. There are regular movie tours on the weekends that take you to many of the locations where these shows were filmed.

Named for Princess Senoyah, mother of the Chief of the Creek Indian Nation (William McIntosh), Senoia has a historic district filled with over 100 historic homes and churches. Main Street features well established antique shops, two bed ‘n’ breakfast inns and an eclectic selection of one-of-a-kind gift shops. Take I-85 south to exit #61 (Fairburn/Peachtree City) and turn left onto Hwy. 74. Drive about 18 miles, crossing over Hwy 54. Continue on Hwy 74 until you come to a traffic light at Rockaway Rd. Turn right onto Rockaway Road, which becomes Main Street. To learn more about Senoia, follow us on facebook at enjoysenoia.

This Month in Collecting History by Mike McLeod January 1, 1735: The birthdate of Paul Revere, patriot, silversmith, printer, engraver—and dentist? Battle of Bunker (Breed’s) Hill, and his body was thrown into a mass grave. Months later, Revere positively identified his dental work.1 Revere’s other handiwork, silver making, is also valuable. A set of five silver tablespoons was auctioned by Christie’s in 2009 for $56,250. January 3, 1924: The sarcophagus of King Tutankhamen was opened by Howard Carter revealing a golden coffin holding two smaller golden coffins, one within the other, all carved like King Tut’s golden mask. Carter and his crew actually discovered the tomb two years before, and it contained three chambers and 3,500 objects. January 7, 1714: The first patent for a typewriter was issued to Henry Mill. In 2010 and 2012, Guinness World Records listed James Bond author Ian Fleming’s gold-plated Royal Quiet Deluxe typewriter as the most expensive at $90,000. However, author Cormac McCarthy’s Olivetti typewriter sold for $254,000 in 2009. On it, he typed No Country For Old Men, All the Pretty Horses and so on. Civil War Collector The

By John Sexton

John, recently I picked up these two items at an auction. The auctioneer mentioned that the photo was of “the Broom Brigade.” Could you tell me what the Broom Brigade is and also the value of the photo? Second is a jacket that I also bought, and again it was mentioned that it was possibly a women’s Civil War jacket. Any ideas? Value? JS: Your image dates to circa 1885. Broom Brigades were women’s organizations who drilled and marched militarily like their male counterparts who used rifles, however they used brooms. Images like this are unusual and tell of a time in history when genders were truly separated—women in Victorian America would never have been trained to be a military auxiliary. The male leader is wearing a Grand Army of the Republic membership badge, so this group was probably one of the women’s auxiliary groups of the GAR. A quick internet check shows a similar 1884 cabinet card of a Cleveland GAR Broom Brigade currently being offered for $150. Another photo of similar genre sold on eBay on Feb. 3, 2008 for $10.77. Can’t help with value of the jacket, but it is not so different from the “Broom Brigader’s” dress seen in these images.

War and possibly associated with Confederate Texas troops. I have never seen a saddle with this device as a martingale or other decoration on horse equipage hardware. North-South Trader magazine has shown several of these dug up from camps and battlefields over the years, and they are accepted as “Texas” by most collectors, regardless of their actual source. I have seen these sold for as much as $1,000 in the past when the market was stronger, but yours, which is in very good condition and still retaining the three connective iron wires on the back, might not sell for as much in today’s softer Civil War market. However, anything Texas is always popular, and Texan collectors buy what they like.

A shield with star, possibly Texan from the Civil War, possibly worth up to $1,000. --------------John Sexton is an independent appraiser and expert of Civil War memorabilia. Ca. 1885 photo of a Broom Brigade. Was surfing the web and came across your web page. I have been metal detecting for over 30 years. While on a hunt in November 2013, I found what I think is a Civil War star martingale. I was wondering if you could help confirm and get a value on it. Any ideas on how it ended up here in Lansing, the capital of Michigan? JS: The lead-filled brass shield with star you found is Civil

today) at the high points in his career. A story is told of a few Oxford students who, upon hearing this, sent ten shillings to Kipling and asked for “…one of his best words. He cabled back, ‘Thanks.’”3 Kipling loved telling bedtime stories to his children Josephine, Elsie and John. Many he published, including the well-known, “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” “Wee Willie Winkie” and the Just So Stories for Little Children. Within The Phantom Rickshaw and other Eerie Tales was the classic adult novella, The Man Who Would Be King, which was made into a movie of the same name starring Sean Connery, Michael Caine, and Christopher Plummer as Rudyard Kipling. (I highly recommend this movie as a must-see.) Of course, The Jungle Book was immortalized on film by Disney and others—and it will be doubly immortalized again in 2016 and 2017 with the premiers of two new remakes.

While Kipling’s talent made good fortune rain down upon him and his family, tragedy also often struck. His daughter Josephine at about the age of 6 died from pneumonia that she contracted while sailing to America with her family. Kipling also developed pneumonia on the same voyage, but he survived. A headline in the March 7, 1899 New York Times read: “JOSEPHINE KIPLING DEAD; The Eldest Child of the Author Succumbs to Pneumonia. MR. KIPLING IS DOING FINELY. He Has Not Been Told of His Loss, as the Physicians Fear the Shock Might Cause a Relapse.” So all the NYT’s readers learned about Josephine’s passing before her father? It appears so. The loss of their dear daughter Josephine struck Rudyard and Carrie hard. However, the loss of their son John was an even greater blow. In 1915 at the

age of 18, John was killed in World War I in a battle for Loos, France. The British had 59,000 casualties in that battle over a 20-day period while the Germans lost half that amount. This one battle accounted for about 20 percent of all Allied casualties in 1915, and to make it worse, no ground was gained due to a German counter attack.4 The reason why John’s death hit Kipling so hard was because he pulled strings to get his son inducted into the military. John had terrible eyesight, and he was rejected several times when he tried to volunteer, even with his father’s influence. Kipling finally was able to get John into the Irish Guards through a high-ranking friend. John was sent into the battle for Aloos on the second day of fighting. His body was never recovered during Kipling’s lifetime. It was believed to be found later under a marker stating “Unknown

Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops— is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

Lieutenant of the Irish Guards.”5 Perhaps to assuage his guilt, Kipling took a prominent role with the Imperial War Graves Commission which made gardens out of all British soldiers’ cemeteries around the world. The Kipling’s other daughter Elsie did survive to adult life, but she never married. Kipling wrote for the rest of his life. Rudyard Kipling died on January 18, 1936 after an operation on a perforated ulcer. As also happened with Samuel Clemens, Kipling’s death was mistakenly reported before it actually happened. He wrote to the magazine saying, “I’ve just read that I am dead. Don’t forget to delete me from your list of subscribers.”6 Rudyard Kipling’s ashes are buried in Westminster Abbey near Charles Dickens. In November of 2015, Skinners auctioned a first edition of Captains Courageous with dust jacket for $3,567 and first editions of the First and Second Jungle Books for $2,337. Sherry Blanton and Ted Carlton of Utah correctly identified Rudyard Kipling. Ted Carlton also correctly identified Ernest Shackleton last month but was not credited for his expertise in identifying famous people. My apologies. --------------

Name This Obscure Antique By Mike McLeod

The Secor Fairy sewing machine. Measuring just eight inches wide and seven inches high, this is a fully functional sewing machine made by the Secor Sewing Machine Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Created in the 1880s, the diminutive Fairy sewing machine seemed like a toy, but in fact, it was a portable sewing machine. It was made of cast iron, wood and brass, and it was operated by a hand crank that also moved the walking foot to advance the material. Owner of the company and inventor Jerome Burgess Secor also produced the Secor sewing machine, a normal-size sewing machine, and the company did well. However, it closed its doors about 1883, mostly due to repercussions from the Panic of 1873. Jerome Burgess Secor is not usually remembered for sewing machines. His name is most often attached to the mechanical toys he made, many while manufacturing sewing machines. The Secor Sewing Machine Company was based in Bridgeport, Conn., and coincidentally, Secor lived next door to the famous toymaker Edward Ives. After meeting Ives, Secor began making a few types of toys. Some of his most memorable were songbirds in cages, a girl playing the

piano, a musical band of four black figures, a clockwork locomotive and other toys. To-date, his most collectible toy is the Freedman’s Savings Bank. Just a handful of these banks still exist, and not long ago, one was sold for $190,000 (before buyer’s premium) by Bertoia Auction of Vineland, N.J. Despite his success with toys, Secor went to work in 1899 for the Williams Typewriter Company. It eventually became the Secor Typewriter Company after he made many improvements to the typewriters manufactured there and then bought the company. His first typewriting machine hit the market in 1906. Unfortunately, World War I and other problems ended Secor Typewriters in 1916. The Secor Fairy has not reached the level of collectability as the Freedman’s Savings Bank, but a Fairy was sold by Skinner’s in 2014 for $1,350 and another sold on eBay in 2015 for $2,500. A side note: there was an actual Freedman’s Saving Bank that was chartered in 1865 to serve African-American

$2,146 (22 bids, 6 bidders): Vernis Martin & Solid Gold Bodkin/Needle Case, French, circa 1780. This rare bodkin, or needle case, is carved of wood and at least 230 years old. The sides and ends have been hand painted with an elegant striped design. The paint has a few very small dings but no chips or serious loss. The center and both ends are mounted with embossed bands of solid 22kt gold (tested and guaranteed). They may be pure gold, but my testing acids only go up to 22kt. This style of painted and varnished decoration is known as Vernis Martin. It is a type of lacquer named for the French brothers Guillaume and Etienne-Simon Martin. Vernis Martin means “Martin varnish.” The condition is excellent for a piece of this age and fragility. It has a natural shell tube in the center with lovely patterns, and the top slides over that. It measures 4 7/8 inches long. (Photo: eBay seller elegant.arts.) DBA: Needles were once very difficult and time-consuming to make and an important household tool. Containers would hold these valuable implements, and those boxes were frequently of exotic materials. This particular one has gold embellishments, and that feature could make the difference with a similar size and age case selling for $1,200 compared to $2,200. Matches were another item that once had elaborate boxes to hold them because of their value and most useful purpose. Antique silver match safes are often seen and collected. Boxes of many types have been collected for years.

Nestled along the scenic shoreline of the Caloosahatchee River on the Gulf coast of southwest Florida, Fort Myers is an interesting blend of young and old. Scott Antique Market Atlanta Sets Early Opening Time for North Building

The Metrolina Antique Market and “Me Month” (or, Is it Possible to Find My Great Grandfather’s Sword?)

Don Scott, Promoter and Manager of Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta announced during the November Atlanta show the opening time for the North Building with its 1,200 exhibitors beginning in December will be at 10:45 a.m. This is a threehour-earlier start than has been the case for the last few years. The change will be due to a new set-up procedure for the dealers, starting the drive in to unload a little sooner and also in what many believe will be a more efficient manner. “The reason for the change is to give shoppers who have shops and studios an early time to get to the show and find the special pieces they are looking for and essentially give the customers a full day to shop on Thursday,” Don Scott said. He pointed out a similar plan in the South Building has allowed it to open some three hours earlier at 11:30 a.m. for some time now. The Scott Antique Market’s November 12-15 show was a full house with great sales for most exhibitors. Furniture was moving well. For example, a New England dealer sold four case pieces, an early dry sink, a painted church bench, a large painted egg box and a 19th century farm table in original painted surface. Scott Antiques Market in Atlanta is the second Saturday weekend of every month, starting Thursday and closing Sunday. The next show will be Jan. 7-10, 2016. For more information, call 740 569 2800 or visit www. scottantiquemarket.com. The Scott Columbus (Ohio) Antique Market begins its season November 28-29 and continues thru the winter months.

Most folks focus on others during November and December, with days filled with shopping, traveling, cooking and entertaining. Therefore, many people think of January as a kind of “me month,” a time to choose something special for one’s own self. Dealers at the January show at the Metrolina Antique Market (December 31 to January 3) are ready to spoil all those givers with great deals on everything from Bakelite bangles to bandoliers. But “Me” is taking on a much larger meaning with the introduction of the show’s association with JustaJoy.com Family Heirloom Exchange, the world’s largest source of indexed identified items owned by antique dealers and others. Family researchers can search by last name or other criteria for “Orphaned Heirlooms” that are associated with ancestors. The website has had success matching family Bibles, photos, Civil War letters, WWI and WWII items and much more to the delight of descendants and dealers alike. “Imagine going to an antique show, giving your family names to an usher, who escorts you directly to dealers who have antiques related to those names,” explained Joy Shivar, JustaJoy.com conceptualist and longtime Metrolina dealer in American history artifacts. “There are tens of thousands of identified items on the antique market. Our website is a ‘virtual antique show’ that makes it possible for antique dealers to easily communicate with the family researchers who will cherish those items forever.” JustaJoy.com is a membership site with two levels of participation—free and supporting. Free members can do initial searches and receive automatic notifications called “Joy Alerts” as items are added, associated with up to 20 family names (surnames). Supporting members pay $20 a year to receive Joy Alerts and have full access to detailed information about items including price and contact information for the seller. Supporting members may also post unlimited numbers of items with no additional listing fees. Nor does the site currently charge commissions or buyer’s premiums. “We truly just want to make matches,” said Shivar. “The more members, the more surnames, the more postings, the more matches—that is our goal. Even though it is still a needle in a haystack—it is a very good haystack. JustaJoy also offers antique dealers another avenue to sell at a very nominal cost with a chance to make someone very happy. What could be better than that?” JustaJoy. com has members in every Spend an hour or a day at one of the Best Antique Malls in the Country U.S. state and in many foreign • 45,000 sq. ft. one-story facility • 300+ dealers • La Petite Tearoom countries. • Located near the Pottery Factory and the outlet centers The Metrolina Antique 500 Lightfoot Road • Williamsburg, VA 23188 Market invites everyone to From I-64 take exit 234 east onto 199, exit at Mooretown Road West. A Poppy table lamp came in just a shade below its estimate of $70,000-$90,000 to realize $65,175. Other lamp highlights include a Pairpoint Puffy Apple Tree table lamp that came to fruition at $29,625 and a Moorish Leaded Glass Chandelier realized $16,590. This auction featured exceptional examples of Galle marquetry glass. A highlight from this category—and perhaps the entire auction as a whole—was an iris and flames Galle marquetry vase in its original presentation box, estimated at $15,000-25,000. When the smoke cleared, this lot—described by our cataloger as “The highest quality Galle marquetry piece we have ever had the privilege of offering”—realized $53,325. Collectors were also all aflutter over a 13.75-inch Galle marquetry butterfly vase that realized $32,588.
