Since time immemorial, people have lived on the northern coast of the Black Sea. The Cimmerians, Scythians and ancient Slavs were the oldest inhabitants of the region. Starting from the 7th century BC, Greek colonists appeared there. In 1794, Odessa, the main southern port of the Russian Empire, was founded on the Black Sea coast. Built on the site where the ancient settlement (the ancient Greek colony, Port of Genoa, Ginestra, the outposts of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Ottoman fortress Yeni Dunya—The Light of the West) had been for the centuries, the city was multicultural and multinational from the very moment of its birth. For the rapid economic development of the city, it received the special status—a tax-free zone of a free port (portofranco) and a territory free from the serfdom that existed at that time in Russia. In an effort to gain freedom, the slavespeasants escaped to the city from their owners; the numerous new workers were attracted by the city’s construction sites. Shops and stores opened. Smuggling flourished. The tax-free area and the opportunity to get rich quickly lured all sorts of adventurers. My ancestors settled in the blessed southern city almost in the first decades of its existence. The men in my family traditionally served in the navy, going on long cruises across the globe. The opening of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands by Russian explorers continued the colonization and populating of the Siberian region that started in the 16th century. In 1798, all the discovered lands developed by the Russians in the northwest of North America were annexed to Russia under the name of Russian America. In 1867, the possessions in America were sold to the USA by the tsarist government. Having heard of the untold riches of the New World, hunters of furbearers and sea mammals and industrialists followed the pioneers, the gold miners, merchants and traders. The rich merchants united in trade and in industrial companies. Even so, various merchant companies were not only at odds with each other, but they also drew into their incessant feuds the Chukchi (Yupik) and Eskimos (Inuit), Aleuts and Indians, until the well-known Russian-American Company was founded in 1799. Since its establishment and until 1841 (the year when Fort Ross was sold), the RussianAmerican Company outfitted 13 voyages around the globe. The Russian-American Company had the right to hire the officers and sailors of the Russian Navy, regardless of their place of residence or duty area. My great-grandfather Karl Franz Zhmudsky became one of those naval officers. The exotic items that Karl Franz brought from his fur trapping and his stories of the northern peoples living on both sides of the Bering Strait planted in the hearts of his sons and grandsons the desire to go to sea, to travel, and to take trips across the Far North. His son Johann became a naval officer, and he served aboard the brig Okhotsk. In 1840, he took part in the expeditions of the famous Russian ethnographer Ilya Voznesensky to the Aleutian and Kuril Islands and gathered a large collection of everyday objects made by northern peoples. His sons and grandsons brought from their campaigns the works of primitive art. They competed with each other in trying to capture the imaginations of friends with unusual

gifts. The collection of specimens of the northern peoples’ everyday lives they brought back was also supplemented with items from their southern expeditions to New Zealand, Australia, Polynesia and so on. Before World War II, a part of the collection was donated to the Odessa Maritime Museum, and unfortunately, it was lost during the German occupation of our city. But a certain number of items were hidden in those difficult times and survived. As the heir to the family tradition, I am keen on completing and improving the collection of my ancestors, even though I myself have a great passion for Scythian and Greek artifacts (peoples that lived in my native homeland two and a half thousands of years ago). Actually in Odessa, in family collections, there are sometimes the absolutely unexpected and rare items. The port city greedily absorbed the different specialties from remote lands and exotic islands. Sometimes, these things get on the antique market, and among primitive souvenirs at flea markets and antique shops, the true masterpieces can be found. Today, Ukraine is in a difficult position. It is a poor country with a low level of income, so the prices of antiques in general are lower than those in the rest of the world. --------My name is Olga Ryadchenko. I live on the Black Sea, in the city of Odessa, Ukraine. I am a linguist, a specialist in applied linguistics, studying the communicative properties of texts. When I was a student, I specialized in comparative philology, Slavic languages. I wanted to become a university professor and teach the historical comparative philology. But at that time, the Soviet Union collapsed, Ukraine had a total unemployment, and I had to say goodbye to my idea. What are the components of texts that particularly affect the psyche; what techniques of suggestion are used in the media? The last five years I have been interested in Russian propaganda. This is an interesting phenomenon (from the scientific point of view, of course). It is a very aggressive form of cheating, which has its own ways of distribution and penetration into the minds of the people. I’m looking for ways to neutralize this (and similar) phenomena on the Internet, at least. I was involved with this subject before the war. Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori Buying Tips for Travelers by Lori Verderame
As the New Year has begun, many of us find ourselves taking to the skies or roads on trips for business and pleasure. As an expert appraiser, people often ask me what items are worth at locations around the world. When I travel—and I travel a lot—I often meet people who ask me what is a good buy or how to spot a bargain. Here’s the 411 on what to shop for in many parts of the world. Australia: coral jewelry; Caribbean islands: giant seashells, woven handbags; China: paintings; Costa Rica: coffee, handmade wooden crafts; Denmark: hand-made wood objects; Finland: wool clothing; Germany: contemporary art, knives; Greece: pottery; Guatemala: Santos sculptures; Italy: leather goods and fashion accessories; Japan: knives and swords: Mexico: silver, terracotta pottery; Middle East: gemstones; New Zealand: wool sweaters; Panama: hats; Turkey: linens, tiles; Puerto Rico: mahogany furniture; Russia: matroyskas or nesting dolls; South Pacific islands: basketry, black pearls; and Spain: Lladro figurines. Of course, this list is not all inclusive, but it gives travelers a good starting point about what types of objects may be good buys in certain places. While the unique qualities of objects found in far-off lands are interesting, be prepared to shop wisely while on vacation or traveling. Negotiate with cash when you can, be knowledgeable about exchange rates, and be sure to fully understand the shipping and return policies. Remember that in many tourist areas and big cities, the prices are inflated in an effort to attract buyers. Stick to your budget and compare prices from shop to shop whenever you can. No matter where you travel, remember that quality equals value. Wherever you shop—at home or abroad—negotiate politely and consider the artisan and the locale when shopping for hand-made items. The allure of hand-made items is the fact that they demonstrate a special talent and help you to recall a special trip as a keepsake or souvenir. Some of my most favorite collectibles from my travels are those hand-made items I bought directly from the artisan or those objects I bought after an exchange with a shop owner or local resident. I remember clearly the time I watched as a talented Romanian woman crocheted a tablecloth in Bucharest that I now use in
my sunroom, how I tried to break the language barrier with a nun at the Vatican gift shop while I shopped for silver rosary beads blessed by the Pope for my mother, and a local man drew a map of the local roads so I could find the sculpture studio of a Santos carver in Guatemala. Happy hunting! ----------------Dr. Lori Verderame is an antiques appraiser, nationally syndicated columnist and author, and award-winning TV personality on Discovery’s Auction Kings internationally. Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod
Carl Bloch was only 55 years old when he passed away from cancer on Feb. 22, 1890. Even so, he left a body of work—rather, of masterpieces—that has made him known throughout the world. Of all the Danish painters, he is probably the most recognized. After seeing any of his historical portrait paintings, can anyone forget the eyes of his subjects, particularly those of Jesus Christ? Carl Heinrich Block was born on May 23, 1834, and although he lived and died in Copenhagen, Denmark, he traveled to Rome, Italy, during his lifetime to study painting. While in the Netherlands on his way to Rome, Bloch marveled at the work of Rembrandt van Rijn. Art historians and critics credit Rembrandt with greatly
influencing Bloch’s artistic style of realistic and moving portrayals of people high and low.1 Bloch himself also gave credit elsewhere: “God helps me—that's what I think—and then I am calm.”2 In Rome for about seven years, Bloch painted The Liberation of Prometheus, his first masterpiece. This painting depicts Zeus’ son Heracles freeing Prometheus from being chained to a rock by his father, the king of the gods. This punishment was inflicted on Prometheus for stealing fire from Mount Olympus and giving it to mankind to relieve suffering. For this act, Zeus chained him to a rock and had an eagle peck out his liver each day.3 Also in Rome, Bloch met and married Alma Trepka, and together they had eight children. Alma passed away after 18 years of happy marriage with Carl. In 1865, Carl Bloch’s talent led his being given the opportunity to create 23 paintings depicting the life of Jesus Christ for the King’s Praying Chamber in the Frederiksborg Castle,4 north of Copenhagen, which houses the Danish Museum of National History. This feat required nearly a decade and a half of work, but when it was completed, Carl Bloch had assured himself a place among the greatest artists in history. Bloch was admitted into the Royal Danish Academy of Art, and he also served as a professor there and as vice director. At his passing at age 55, he left 250 paintings and 75 etchings.5 In truth, his masterpieces sing his praises better than any writer could hope to do, and they tell of his true talent and faith. Ted Carlton of Utah correctly identified Carl Bloch. --------------------1Brigham Young University, “BYU Magazine,” http:// magazine.byu.edu, “The Master’s Hand,” by Nathan N. Name This Antique by Mike McLeod
Aaron Burr table that opened to form a desk-and-seat combo. (Photos, courtesy of George Glazer Gallery, www.georgeglazer.com.) This unique table/desk/chair combination is the work of Stephen Hedges who patented the design in 1854. However, this particular piece of furniture has acquired the name/title of an “Aaron Burr desk” due to an article in the New York Herald in 1911 stating that Burr owned one. However (again), the design was patented almost two decades after Burr’s death on September 14, 1836 so this is historically a little hazy. Aaron Burr’s notoriety for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel no doubt helped give this interesting piece of furniture a claim to fame.
This particular Burr desk is described by George Glazer Gallery of New York City (where it is featured at www. georgeglazer.com) as, “A metamorphic oval table, having four cabriole legs, ending in scrolled feet and casters. The top opens by hinges at the center, with one half serving as a desk (with inset drawer), the other half swiveling out on hinges to become a barrel back desk chair (facing the desk), upholstered in striped cut red velvet with brass nails…very similar in form to a walnut veneered example sold at Christies on October 3, 2007, stamped ‘Stephen Hedges New York. That example sold for $5,250, including buyer’s premium; another example sold at Christies in January 1998, for what is likely an auction record—$29,900, including buyer’s premium.” Aaron Burr was an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He is credited with saving an entire brigade from capture by ordering its retreat from advancing Redcoats. Ironically, among those saved in the brigade was Alexander Hamilton.

Aaron Burr, Third Vice President of the United States.
The famous duel was inspired by what Burr took as Hamilton’s slanderous words against his character that were published in a newspaper after he lost an election for governor of New York. Facing one another, Hamilton fired first and missed. Burr fired, hitting Hamilton above the right hip; the bullet passed through his liver and spine. Alexander Hamilton was taken to New York and died a few days later. Adding irony to the tragedy, the duel took place at the same place in New Jersey where Hamilton’s son had also died in a duel. Burr was charged with several crimes for dueling, but the charges were all dropped

later. Before the duel, Aaron Burr had served as Vice President under President Thomas Jefferson. After the duel, his life never got back on track, and he died on Sept. 14, 1836, two years after a stroke paralyzed him. Ted Carlton of Utah correctly identified the Aaron Burr table/ desk. -------------

It could be said that residents of Jacksonville, Florida are truly living large. It’s the largest city in the state of Florida by population, and the largest city by area in all the contiguous United States. The city was even named after a larger-than-life figure – Andrew Jackson who, before he became the seventh president of the United States, was the first military governor of the Florida Territory. Since the 19th century, Jacksonville has been a major military and civilian deep-water port, but tourism is hugely important to the city’s burgeoning economy. And with tourists come the retail shops that cater to them, and antique shops are not in short supply.

This Month in Collecting History by Mike Mc Leod
February 1, 1901: Frankly, Scarlett, it’s my birthday. Clark Gable earned $120,000 while working 71 days filming Gone With The Wind. Vivien Leigh earned $25,000 for working 125 days—about $427,000 in today’s money.1 Michael Jackson bought David O. Selznick’s Academy Award for Best Picture for Gone With The Wind for $1.54 million in 1999.2 Clark Gable February 3, 1936: The first Baseball Hall of Famers were announced: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner. Also on this day, Norman Rockwell was born in New York City. In 2013, his Saying Grace sold for $46 million at Sotheby’s. February 4, 1902: Charles Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Mich. One of five letters of introduction he carried on his solo flight to Paris on May 20-21, 1927 sold for $135,000. Carrying no parachute, he figured if he went down, there was no need.3 He lived until 1974. Rosa Parks was also born on this day in Tuskegee, Ala. In 2005, her personal effects (including her Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal) were sold by Guernsey’s for $4.5 million, according to USA Today. February 5, 1934: Hank Aaron, born in Mobile, Ala., practiced hitting bottle caps with a broomstick while young. A Hank Aaron game-worn jersey from 1969 was sold for $49,918 in 2014 by Lelands.com. February 6, 1895: Funny that Babe Ruth’s birthday follows Hank Aaron’s. Something else funny—when the Babe tried to trademark his own candy, Ruth’s Home Run, the Curtiss Candy Company (creator of Baby Ruth) filed suit in 1926 saying he was infringing on their copyright of the Ruth name. The company said they named the candy after Pres. Grover Cleveland’s daughter Ruth, even though she’d died 22 years earlier. The court believed the yarn and put the Babe out of business4. A Ruth’s Home Run candy wrapper was sold by Legendary Auctions in 2010 for $600.

An autographed first edition of Oliver Twist sold for $229,000 in 2008.5 Wilder wrote eight Little House on the Prairie books and 17 other works. A handwritten, autographed letter from her to a fan was sold by Bonhams in 2014 for $1,375. February 8: Born this day: James Dean in Marion, Ind., (1931); Jules Verne in Nantes, France (1828); and Lana Turner in Wallace, Id. (1921). Paul Fraser’s Autograph Index 2015 lists James Dean’s signature as the most valuable autograph by an individual at $27,000 (paulfrasercollectibles.com). In November 2015, Swann Galleries sold a first edition Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon for $22,500. James Dean February 12, 1809: Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky. In January 2015, the 302-lot Dow Collection of Lincoln memorabilia (photographs, letters, diaries, Booth’s arrest warrant, a funeral admittance card, etc.) was sold for $803,889 by Heritage Auctions. Charles Darwin was born on the same day. Unsigned first editions of his 1859 On The Origin of the Species sold for £103,000 at Christie’s in 2009 and £26,000 at Lyon & Turnbull in 2015. February 15: Birthdays of Galileo Galilei (1564) in Pisa, Italy, and Susan B. Anthony (1820) in Adams, Mass. Galileo’s 1610 Sidereus Nuncius (The Starry Messenger) describing his observations by telescope of craters on the moon, four moons of Jupiter, etc., sold for $662,500 in 2012. February 17, 1963: Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 2014, he made more money from sports shoes ($100 million) than from his 15 NBA contracts ($94 million).6 On this day in 1909, Apache Chief Geronimo died at 79 while incarcerated at Fort Sill, Okla. In 2007, Bonhams & Butterfields auctioned a Springfield rifle belonging to him for $100,000. February 18, 1987: Maria von Trapp passed away. Blue Willow Pattern Advertising
by Hugh Sykes My first conscious introduction to the Blue Willow Pattern came in 1993 when in Sydney, Australia, I met my wife Kathy. At that time, she had been collecting all things Blue Willow for quite a while. Fast forward to 1999; that was the year we travelled to Richmond, Virginia, for an annual convention hosted by the International Willow Collectors. While most of us are familiar with the traditional Blue Willow Pattern seen on ceramic china, that convention opened up our eyes, showing us how the Blue Willow Pattern was not just blue but came in a multitude of colors and was not just a pattern seen on ceramic china. After the Richmond convention, I decided to start collecting Blue Willow Pattern, not just the regular blue and white, but pieces that had an advertising theme or interest. The legend of the Blue Willow Pattern and the design we see on blue and white china everywhere today was designed by the English pottery of Minton, circa 1780, in order to add a touch of Oriental magic to cheaper earthenware and make it more attractive and therefore more saleable. The design was printed on a transfer that was applied to the pottery before firing, allowing for the quite cheap production of elaborate designs. At the time, Chinese designs were all the rage in Britain, but the remarkable thing is the popularity of the Blue Willow Pattern has
never really waned. Over the years, the Blue Willow Pattern has become perhaps the most recognized pattern in the world, a pattern that has a legend, history and universal acceptance. It is qualities like these that advertisers and marketing departments like to associate their products and services with. Therefore, it is no surprise that the “Willow Pattern brand” has over the past 200 years been used to promote a vast array of products and services. The pattern has been associated with airlines, beverages, chocolates, cigarettes, souvenirs and restaurants, to name a few. Although the Blue Willow Pattern has a strong English heritage, it is perhaps more widely known and used in the United States where it is affectionately known as America’s favorite pattern. As a collector of Blue Willow Pattern that has been used for advertising, I can say that I have more than 500 examples of this—too many to show for this article. What I have therefore done is chosen six American examples which have an interesting story behind them. The first piece I have chosen is a plate which, on a cursory glance, displays a typical Blue Willow Pattern on it. On closer inspection though, you will see the words “Sherwood Inn” under the Pagoda. Built as a stagecoach stop in 1807, the Sherwood Inn is located in the historic village of Skaneateles, New York, and has been a favorite resting place for

travelers and locals for over two centuries. This modern-day piece made in 2000 by the Syracuse China Company, New York, was purchased in Jackson, Tennessee. Sometimes the advertising component of a piece is not clearly evident. This platter even without the advertising theme is a special piece, firstly in that the china is pink and secondly the Blue Willow Pattern has departed from its traditional blue color to one where it is now multi-colored. On the reverse of the platter are the words “Compliments of J. Ziobro Meats and Groceries 1158 Sycamore Street, Camden, NJ.” The platter would have been used as a gift for valued clients or for them to borrow. My research indicates that the business was trading during the 1930s and “J” was short for John. An iconic American brand, Blue Plate of New Orleans
incorporated a Blue Willow Pattern plate to market its Blue Plate name. The history of the Blue Plate brand is extensive and originates from America’s dining car history. Dining car restaurants would advertise a “Blue Plate” special where they would use a partitioned grill plate to provide a three-course meal at a set, and often inexpensive, price. While the Blue Plate brand has disappeared, Blue Plate Real Mayonnaise showing the Blue Plate logo can still be purchased in southern states. Here are two Blue Plate products that were produced in the 1970s.
For many of us, it has been a tradition that when we go on holiday and visit a place that holds a special memory, we will quite often buy a souvenir. Sometimes, the souvenir might

The Shops Of Sarasota Sarasota just may be the ultimate beach town, with its sun-kissed location on the Gulf of Mexico, more than 200 sunny days a year and an average yearround temperature of 71 degrees. But there are other reasons why Sarasota was named Best Small City to Live by Money Magazine. Sarasota County -- which includes Venice, Northport, Longboat and Siesta Keys -- is alive with culture, sports, affordable homes, a brisk job market and great schools.

Oh, and did we mention it’s a haven for antique lovers? There are 44 shops, and all of them are convenient to one another. Clustered along streets with names like Coconut, Pineapple and Palm, these stores make Sarasota a must-visit destination for antiquers just looking for that next great “find.” The Fruitville district is especially worth checking out.
Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

TLCI’s New On-line Guide Is Coming!
Tea Leaf Club International (TLCI) will be launching a free online guide to help collectors identify and recognize the many body styles, motifs, potters, and characteristics of the popular decorated ironstone. Target date for the launch is March 1, 2016. When available, one will be able to view many photos of representative pieces and learn more about the history and development of Tea Leaf through the years. Cross-referencing will allow better access for comparisons. For example, calling up information on sugar bowls will bring up photos of many pieces in various body styles and by different potters. This will help in initial identification of a particular piece. Then, using the link from a photo, one can bring up more information on that style and potter. Visit www.tealeafclub.com for information.

estimate of $3,000-$5,000. The price realized could exceed (or fall below) this estimate, based on whether this unit was known for carrying Mississippi rifles or even if this soldier was present at Gettysburg; more research is needed in my opinion to pay more. Regardless, I would value the gun in the same $3,000-$5,000 range as an identified Confederate-used rifle; his unit was indeed present at Gettysburg.
I’m looking at purchasing a Windsor (Robbins & Lawrence) 1849 Mississippi rifle that was used in Pickett’s charge by an infantryman with the 24th Virginia, Co I. The key photo is of the gun stock with the name of “W. T. Boswell 24th Co I” carved in it. A Whitmel T. Boswell served in this company from May 1861 to Dec 1864 (nothing about him after that). He had two brothers that served in Co. E of the 57th Virginia; one died of his wounds at Gettysburg while the other of Typhoid prior to Gettysburg. Any thoughts as to the value of such an item? JS: Identified arms and artifacts from Gettysburg always bring a big premium. The believability of provenance and purported history can increase the value of a relatively mundane rifle or sword that no doubt was on a particular place on a battlefield. Dealer prices on identified Gettysburg objects and prices realized from auction are often many multiples of the price of the same item if unidentified. This well used model 1841 contract US rifle with no history would probably sell for less than $1,000 in most venues. An 1849 Mississippi rifle valued at $3,000-$5,000 for being The carving in the stock with the soldier’s name, company, at Gettysburg. and regimental number appear from your photographs to be original. In my opinion, this rifle would have a pre-sale auction

I have a CS Navy button I found a couple of years ago. It was pounded flat and folded in half. When I recovered it, I opened it up and took it home and cleaned it. Appears to be a CS68 (Alberts). Was wondering the value. I have relic hinted for 30+ years and have never seen another. The backmark is “E.M. Lewis & Co. Richmond VA.” JS: You found a very rare Confederate button, though unfortunately, quite poor in condition, but the backmark and details of a sailing ship and “CSN” are still distinct. You found the correct A. H. Albert reference of CS68 as a button made by “E M Lewis, Richmond Virginia.” Buttons made in the south are commonly referred to as being “locally made,” and Confederate locals bring the highest prices in the military button collecting community, especially in high condition. At the peak of market about 10 years ago, a perfect example of this button, non-excavated, approached $10,000. However now, the same button might bring no more than $4,000-$5,000. Your example in very poor condition would still be a filler in a collection and should bring $300-$500.
A Confederate Navy button found by a relic hunter worth $300-$500. In pristine condition, it would be worth $4,000$5,000. A friend has a family heirloom from his grandfather that fought in the war. The Confederate bills are authentic, as is the letter. Could you give me approximate values of the items? JS: The Confederate currency here is all reproduction. This particular set was made as souvenirs, probably about the time the middle document was decoupaged to the board. You can tell by the ink colors in the signature; if the currency was original, they would also have been hand-signed in a similar ink color ink. The document with the cracks and folds is original and scarce. It is a Confederate “Parole of Honor” given by US cavalry forces to CS soldiers in Columbus, Mississippi, near war’s end in 1865. The most famous paroles were those given at Appomattox (Appomattox Paroles), which in similar

By Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $3,301 (24 bids, 14 bidders): Large Antique Majolica Figural Bottle, Stork Umbrella Glasses & Hat. After doing some searching on the net, I found that this large antique Majolica Stork Bottle is quite rare. I also found that they came in a small and large size. This 15.5-inch tall Majolica bottle is the large size. Wearing a hat and glasses, he has an umbrella under his wing. In close-up, part of the eyeglasses is missing, and there is a very tiny fleck to the tip of the stork’s beak. There are no other problems or any restorations to this 19th century Majolica bottle. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12.) DBA: These majolica bottles are quite collectible, and eBay has become the selling place where the highest prices for these bottles can be found. Going back through guides for figural bottles from the past 20 years shows some marked differences. Prices for these objects selling on eBay are much higher than what is recorded at auction or even what the guide books were saying several years ago. Collectors who spend time trying to find these at auction and tag sales usually find the low-price deals. This particular bottle is higher quality and rare, but prices for some figural character bottles can be low when time is taken to seek them out. One thing I can predict is that with technology advances and more small auctions selling items on an international platform, more collectors will find the unusual finds they are seeking. What I cannot predict is whether the allure for figural bottles will continue with collectors paying this much for one bottle. A#heford

DBA: The Society of Cincinnati is a patriotic society in which the membership comes from officers who served in the Continental Army or Navy for at least three years. It is a hereditary membership with only one descendant representing the original member at any given time, following the laws of primogeniture. Within twelve months of its founding in 1783, 2,150 members had joined. Only about 5,500 men were eligible for membership as colonial militia and minutemen were not eligible, and of the Continental Line, only the officers were eligible. The bald eagle was chosen as the insignia. This medal very closely resembles the original ones made for the founding members. There were 140 original ones in the first presentation, and one of those from the original 140 was sold for $34,000 at auction earlier this year. This price for this one sold on eBay is a good deal for the buyer; even more recent adaptations of the eagle design for the Society of Cincinnati have sold for as much as $12,000 at auction. This object has a long-standing history of high prices.
DBA: The Gamewell Company of Newton, Mass., began manufacturing fire alarm boxes in the 1880s. The first ones worked as telegraph call boxes to obviously report a fire. Later, these boxes were made to assist the police in making reports to their headquarters before twoway radio was introduced. Later still, call boxes were introduced for citizens to call for help. This is on the high side of the usual value, which shows how eBay gets to a different market than the usual auction market and sometimes, even dealers.
$3,300 (34 bids, 8 bidders): Gamewell Citizen Key Cast Iron Police Call Box and Gamewell Stand. In amazing condition, the large external cast iron call box has been repainted in black. The lettering is done in gold leaf and looks fantastic. The internal green box has not been repainted and is untouched. All internal parts appear to be in perfect condition just as it would have been approximately 100 years

$3,322 (7 bids, 3 bidders): Antique 1880s Adam Forepaugh Circus Poster Elephants Roman Hippodrome 40 x 30. This is an antique circus poster featuring the Adam Forepaugh Jr. Great Show, Largest In The World. Adam Forepaugh was the son of John Forepaugh, circus owner. The poster reads, “Museum Menagerie, Triple Circus & Roman Hippodrome.” “Adam Forepaugh Jr’s Latest Triumph A Riding Elephant.” This is the second (last) of two posters that we had. The poster most likely is from the late 1880s when the circus toured the Midwest states in competition with P.T. Barnum. It appears that they had a great rivalry during this era of circus history. The beautifully detailed and bright color lithograph is by The Strobridge Litho Co. The poster is from an estate in southwest Michigan with the story that the original owner was a circus member who decided to settle in Niles, Mich., when the circus came to town there. The poster measures 40 x 30 inches. It is in poor condition with loss of the poster paper, large tears at the elephants’ trunks, dirt, smudges, edges missing, etc. (Photo: eBay seller skyspirit.) DBA: What I feel is more unusual about this item is that this poster lists Adam
Forepaugh, Jr who was an elephant trainer in his father’s circus. His father had often commented that he would be the victor over P.T. Barnum because he had a son to succeed him, and Barnum had none. However, Forepaugh sold his circus the year before his death. While circus posters are sought after, this is a high price, and many can be found for less money. This poster was not described to be in good condition, and it is the rarity that is driving the price. Also, this one is much larger than other ones I have seen. ---------------------Deborah Abernethy is a certified appraiser with the International Association of Appraisers. Lightner Museum Curator’s Tour is Held Each Month. Feb. 3 Topic: French Taste for America’s Gilded Age Lightner Museum Curator Barry Myers conducts monthly tours featuring unique and special treasures of the Museum. The tours are the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. and offer guests an intimate encounter with a select few of the Lightner’s eclectic relics. February’s Curator’s Tour, slated for Feb. 3, will highlight America’s passion for French design in the Gilded Age. In the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were ambassadors to France and developed a taste for French cuisine and decorative arts. These gentlemen introduced French style to the American public. From the 1850s to the 1910s, French style was all the rage. As wealthy Americans traveled to Europe during the 19th century, many became enamored with French style and culture. An opportunity to meet Mr. Myers, along with an interactive tour, gives local residents and tourists alike an
opportunity to learn the history of the building and to explore more deeply the Museum’s collections. Tours are included in the price of admission and will begin in the front lobby of the Museum at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month. Admission is free for St. Johns County residents with valid identification. Donations are appreciated and will be accepted after the tour. The Lightner Museum is a non-profit cultural institution sustained by the generous support of individuals, businesses and sponsors. For more information, call 904-824-2874 or visit www.LightnerMuseum.org.

condition sell in excess of $1,000. The parole, if it was loose and not glued to the board, would probably sell for $600-$800. Unfortunately, this entire display has little value to document collectors, but it still has some value in the antique world, although only a fraction of what it would have if it was not in this condition. The Parole of Honor in the center is rare but not worth much in this state. The Confederate currency notes are reproductions.

Nelson, director of the New Bedford Museum of Glass in New Bedford, Mass. “I grew up in Manchester, Connecticut, which is the site of an 18th-century glass factory, Pitkin Glass Works,” Mr. Nelson said. “The ruins of it are still standing. My father was a collector of several things, including glass and antiques, and I began to collect as well, coins and stamps in the beginning.” While a sophomore in college, Nelson drove to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y., where he was amazed at the collection. He became particularly interested in the development of the glass press and sandwich glass, and the fight over who owned the patents for pressing glass in the 1830s. Nelson also began collecting books on glass, amassing more than 2,000 titles, which he has now donated to the New Bedford Museum of Glass, which has more than 10,000 books on glass topics.

At the Houston show, Nelson will speak on art glass of the 1870-90s and on New Bedford glass. He will also do limited periods of glass identification for show attendees who bring pieces in. (This will not include valuations of items.) Mr. Nelson earned his master’s degree and certificate of museum studies from the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture at the Winterthur Museum and the University of Delaware. His master’s thesis examined the development of the American glass press during the 1820s and 1830s. The Houston Museum in Chattanooga’s Bluff View Arts District is a small but stunning gem in the city’s arts crown. Created with the astounding collection of Anna Safley Houston, who during her lifetime amassed more than 15,000 antique pitchers and thousands of other glassware pieces and antiques, the Victorian house on High Street housing the museum has become a national mecca for antique lovers and glass collectors. The Antiques Show & Sale benefiting Chattanooga’s Houston Museum will be held in Stratton Hall, at 3146 Broad Street in Chattanooga, Tenn. Show hours are Feb. 26-27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CST) and Feb. 28 from noon until 4 p.m. Admission is $10. For more information, call 423-267-7176, or visit www.thehoustonmuseum.org.
