Collecting Pocket Mirrors: Miniature Treasures of Design and Nostalgia
By Cynthia Maris Dantzic Often hidden among larger (and costlier) items at flea markets, collectible shows and antique shops are small oval and round celluloid-backed pocket mirrors, worthy additions to your list of “must findâ€? treasures. These tiny mirrors, no more than three inches in length, are often charming examples of graphic design in miniature, much easier to store and display than the posters, produce-crate labels, enameled advertising signage, or the actual products they often illustrate. As early as the late 19th century, shopkeepers presented these useful and decorative items as complimentary souvenirs, often in a basket or tray on their countertops, not only as a constant reminder of their establishment, service or product, but also as a useful addition to milady’s purse or a gentleman’s pocket. Long before Andy Warhol immortalized the Campbell’s Soup can as an icon of Pop Art, tiny circles of celluloid pictured these on the face of round pocket mirrors, with the addition of period type announcing the price (10 cents!), thus blurring the distinction between “fineâ€? and “commercialâ€? art. I actually paid $3 for mine a number of years ago, after debating its high cost! Earlier, when I began to look for pocket mirrors, the price had ranged from 25¢ to a dollar or two, and they may still be found on occasion as low as $5, although certain rarities now bring up to $500 or even more. A number of early 1903-era Coca-Cola beauties, featuring stylish ladies of the period gracefully holding a glass of the ubiquitous thirst-quencher, are in this range. These are hard to come by, though imitations, reproductions, (yes, call ’em fakes) are relatively common. There are a number of ways to detect and identify these
forgeries. Among the most easily observed discrepancies between the real and not-real are the absence of the maker’s name on the mirror’s rim and the appearance of large BenDay-type dots seen under magnification, indicating a screenprinted copy of the original. Advertising has been only one of the many subjects of what is hoped to become your newest collecting passion. Another category is matrimony. At weddings, portraits of the bride and groom on pocket mirrors were given as keepsakes starting in the early 1900s. These are easily found, often for between $5 and $15. To me, the images of brides, particularly their changing headdresses and veils, provide a delightful, often amusing, history of styles and fashions over the decades. Some seem to rival the wedding cake itself. Of course, other family-related events have been recorded and preserved on these portable, reflective miniatures. For the younger set, baby portraits were popular, as well as images of children at christenings, confirmations and bar mitzvahs. At the other side of the lifecycle, I have a charming double portrait of a couple on their 50th wedding anniversary with a silvery border, and I have several 25th anniversary mirrors. Military portraits are frequently to be found, particularly those made during the Second World War, when patriotism was at its height. There are many mirrors with pre-printed edge-images of the flag with an open area in the center for a portrait of the family’s serviceman or woman. I have a particularly appealing pair of these, with a soldier centered on one, and his Mom (she’s too‌mature‌to be his sweetheart) on the other, looking rather sad. The snapshot of family events was a common subject for mirrors in the 1930s and ‘40s, and I have seen, and even

acquired, a number of these featuring old-style bathing suits, straw hats and groups of young people with their arms around each other’s shoulders, grinning into the camera after an evening of…whatever, as the kids say. Historic sites are a fine subset for your collection, from the Statue of Liberty (with or without an ad for a drugstore or other merchant’s shop), the Capitol, Washington Monument, Niagara Falls (from many viewing angles), any number of forts, state capitol buildings and birthplaces of the famous, to equestrian statues of many generals and other heroic individuals. You might look for shaped mirrors which exploit their round or oval format, turning the entire object into a tiny football, basketball, old-style vinyl record, cookie or egg. For example, I have a charming white oval mirror with a thin crack seeming to run down its center and a yellow chick with his little beak and eye apparently emerging from the interior. I will admit that these shaped mirrors are among my favorites. The beer keg and whiskey barrel provide particularly successful three-dimensional illusions for mirrors. One of the diminutive mirrors shaped like an old-style records bears a red RCA label which reads “Edison,” a special treasure. Not a shaped mirror, but one on a related subject, features the famous Victor dog with its head tipped as it listens to “his master’s voice” on an early recording device, the historic phonograph. There are so many specific subject areas for you to seek as your collection grows. General topics such as “products” can include specific sub-categories: toiletries (talcum powder was a favorite and hair products of all sorts, with the most amazing hairstyles and moustaches); potables (yes, you will see many beer, whiskey, barroom and soft drink graphics); tools and machinery (from large farming equipment to tiny nails); clothing (from boots and shoes to men’s suits, women’s undergarments and hats); medicinals (from Lydia Pinkham’s ladies’ pills to various cures for every imaginable ailment); and yes, there’s more! You may want to search for specific subjects such as: animals (dogs, cats, birds, farm critters); transportation (ships, trains, bicycles); theatrical personalities (Elvis, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn); specific products (Cracker Jacks, Beeman’s gum, Buster Brown shoes, Lava soap); political (FDR, many local candidates for office); holidays (Christmas tops the list); or pre-celluloid paper-backed specimens with many products no longer available. This latter can be particularly inexpensive but delightful, advertising such long-vanished products as roller tray trunks, horse blankets, grate bars for coal, or facilities such as H. Fischer’s Pool Room in Niagara Falls, or Ross Hatter & Shirter. If you are just beginning to search for pocket mirrors, among the most frequently seen examples at flea markets are
those with round gemstone-edged borders, often encircling an ad for a jewelry store (with or without a large picture of a diamond or diamond ring) or other pictorial subjects. The inverted image shows the smiling face of a satisfied customer seen in one direction and when held upside down, the frowning scowl of the disappointed fellow who purchased the product from an inferior competitor. “I wish I had bought of Young,” says the caption on one. One specialty, known as “dexterity” toys or games, features an image with several indentations into which one tries (and tries) to fit tiny balls by shaking gently and turning the piece. Favorite subjects for these are: the teeth of animals: smiling but odd-looking people; the eggs of various kinds of poultry; balls of different sports, such as tennis or billiards; and eyes of all sorts. My favorite of these features a lady’s high-topped and high-heeled black boot with five tiny black balls to be fitted into five little buttonholes. It is a maddening but satisfying effort. If you are seriously determined to build a collection of these delightful miniatures, but are unsuccessful at first in your perusal of flea markets, garage sales or antique shops, you may want to look into the offerings of Hake’s Americana and Collectibles. You can always find a nice selection of pocket mirrors in their catalogue or auction listings and at reasonable prices. Once you have amassed a small treasury of mirrors, you may find it convenient and easy to store and display them in a number of easily obtained containers. Jewelry and coin-collector’s trays with individual sections lined in soft felt are ideal. Old-style spool thread cabinets are treasures in themselves and can hold a large collection in their many subdivided drawers. Only the length of this article keeps me from adding many more details. I would be glad to pursue further. If you would like to know more about the history, preservation, storage, or condition issues related to pocket mirrors, a letter to the editor will be sure to find me, and I do answer every one. And yes, I’d love to see a photo of your grandparents’ wedding mirror! --------Cynthia Maris Dantzic is a Senior Professor of Art at LIU Brooklyn, a campus of Long Island University. She exhibits work in a variety of mediums and is the author of nine art-related books. The newest, 100 New York Calligraphers, will be released this spring. Detailed clues about fakes, and other material about pocket mirrors can be found in her recent book, Antique Pocket Mirrors—Pictorial & Advertising Miniatures, which presents life-size images of about 700 of these beauties in full color on heavyweight glossy paper, presenting the look and feel of the actual objects they depict. It may be purchased through Amazon or directly from the publisher, Schiffer Publishing Ltd.

Scarlett’s Rough Road to Hollywood
By John Wiley, Jr.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the motion picture Gone With the Wind, which had its world premiere in Atlanta on Dec. 15, 1939. Author Margaret Mitchell hoped the longawaited unveiling of the film made from her blockbuster novel would mean the end of the public’s interest in her. However, as when she first sold the movie rights, Mitchell vastly underestimated the staying power of Scarlett O’Hara. On July 7, 1936, Margaret Mitchell agreed to an offer of $50,000 from Selznick International Pictures, Inc., for the movie rights to her novel, Gone With the Wind, which had been published the week before. Naively, she thought the sale would mark the end of her involvement with the motion picture, but her attempts to ensure that Hollywood and a movie-crazed public leave her alone was an unending struggle. The author received the movie contract the following week. After reviewing its 16 pages with her husband John Marsh, who was her business manager, and her brother Stephens Mitchell, an attorney, she decided the document was “the stupidest contract” she had ever seen, and one “…no rational person could sign, regardless of the amount involved.” The three of them had many questions; John Marsh wrote an 11-page, single-spaced letter laying out their concerns, noting he hoped “…getting the contract revised and signed won’t be as laborious as the job of getting this very long letter written.” He was to be disappointed. Marsh and Stephens Mitchell tried to get answers over the telephone, but to no

avail. By month’s end, the author and her brother decided to go to New York to meet face-to-face with representatives of Selznick International. “I will lose my mind certainly if this thing isn’t settled soon,” she told a friend. Gone With the Wind had touched a chord in a Depressionweary nation, and readers poured out their hearts to Scarlett’s creator. Seemingly overnight, Mitchell became one of the most famous women in the country. Fans swamped her with mail; some days, hundreds of letters, along with dozens of copies of her novel to be autographed, arrived at her Atlanta apartment. Mitchell was grateful for the public’s appreciation of her work and felt duty-bound to respond and thank them for their kind words and answer their questions, even though it added to her workload. But her replies, warm and friendly, encouraged many readers to write a second time, often leading to a series of correspondence. For advice on what to do “…when one has been so unfortunate as to become a best seller,” she turned to Stark Young, the Mississippi author of the 1934 novel, So Red the Rose. She wrote: “For instance, when I am expecting a hellishly busy day and five close friends telephone, announcing that their Aunt Minnies from Keokuk are visiting them and
will have a stroke if they do not see what I look like—what am I to do? Northerners have said bluntly, ‘Tell your friends you’ll be jolly well pleased if their Aunt Minnies have two strokes as long as they don’t bother you.’ But you are a Southerner and you know the intricate and courteous relationships between friend and friend and kin and kin in this section. They are not to be dealt with cavalierly.” “You hit the nail on the head,” Stark Young replied, agreeing that “…it’s the Southern in us that complicates” matters. He advised her to take a trip to Mexico or New Orleans under her married name—“There, nobody would bother you”—or to take advantage of the “big city’s privacy” of New York. But he admitted there was no long-term solution. Fans already had begun writing her about the movie, and Mitchell believed selling the film rights would shift that burden onto Selznick. She and Stephens Mitchell took the train to New York on July 28. At Selznick’s Park Avenue office the next morning, they met with representatives of her publisher, Macmillan, as well as John Wharton, Selznick’s attorney and treasurer of Selznick International, and Kay Brown, the producer’s story editor. The author and her brother took an immediate liking to Brown. “Margaret and I had not been in New York 15 minutes

before we both whispered to each other that you were the smartest person around,” Stephens Mitchell told Brown years later. The author and her brother were “as ignorant as a babe unborn” about the issues they faced, and Stephens Mitchell admitted he was intimidated by Wharton, one of the country’s leading theatrical rights attorneys. The first day of talks did not go well. Using Marsh’s lengthy letter as a guide, Mitchell’s brother raised several points that were dismissed as mere technicalities. In addition, any hope they held of the studio allowing the author a say in how the book was translated to the screen was quickly dashed. The contract specifically gave Selznick the right to make “...any and all changes and substitutions in the property,” including plot, action and dialogue. By the end of the day, the Mitchells considered simply walking away, but the author wanted to put the matter behind her, so they decided to stay and try again tomorrow. the contract that obligated her to offer the movie rights to her next novel to Selznick before anyone else. She also insisted on inserting a line in the section about commercial tie-ups—items such as dolls, games and figurines manufactured to promote the film—that directed her name not be used in promoting such products. That afternoon, July 30, Mitchell signed the contract, selling the movie rights to Gone With the Wind to producer David O. Selznick for $50,000. She received $45,000, and Macmillan and agent Annie Laurie Williams split the remaining $5,000 as their commission. In Mitchell’s mind, her dealings with Hollywood were over. Selznick was free to make the motion picture he wanted from her book, and she would bear none of the blame should it fail. Contractually, the studio could not use her name to endorse “Wade Hampton Hamilton Bran Flakes” or “Scarlett O’Hara-Hamilton-Kennedy-Butler Toilet Water,” as Mitchell’s husband joked. Mitchell would not bother the people making the movie, and they would not bother her. However, the author’s innate curiosity and a maternal interest in what Selznick was doing with her literary “baby”—along with the public’s unshakable belief that as the author, Mitchell was their ticket to Hollywood—meant she could not stay aloof for long. And, as she soon learned, not everyone took contracts and promises as seriously as she did. --------------Excerpted from the prologue to The Scarlett Letters: The Making of the Film Gone With the Wind, edited by John Wiley, Jr. (Taylor Trade Publishing, $34.95)

County_Grp.09.14_SEA Shops of St.Manatee Petersburg ...“The Jewel of Florida’s Gulf Coast” There's an old saying about St. Petersburg, Fla.; People who live there love it; businesses that located there stay; and visitors who go there to shop and play want to come back again and again. How true! St. Petersburg and Pinellas County offer an unequaled environment for work and play. Wonderful weather and miles of sandy beaches make it a magnet for people worldwide. St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. The advertisers on this page offer a taste of what we mean.
Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important northsouth link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

What's Selling on eBay?
by Mike McLeod and Deborah Abernethy
$2,650 (37 bids): Big Red Kugel, Grape Shape. Very good condition, commensurate to age. No damage at all. Gilded metal natural patina. One bottom side lost mercury. (Photo: eBay seller bazardeltiemporecobrado.) DBA: The word kugel originally meant ball in German. The name today refers to a Christmas ornament. The early ones were made of heavy glass lined in silver and usually in shapes of globes, grapes, apples, pears, berries and pine cones. These are being made new today en masse. There are differences in the old and new ones: the old ones are much heavier, and the neck where the loop for hanging attaches looks different. The neck on the newer ones extends higher. The cap on the old ones is nearly flush with the surface. While this is a high price for a Christmas ornament, this example is more unusual since it is larger, from the early 1800s, and in a fruit shape, which is harder to find.
$7,900 (40 bids): Sun Mfg. Co. Coin Op Bicycle Trade Stimulator Cigar Arcade. This coin-operated machine was manufactured in the late 1800s (around 1896). The player would deposit a nickel in the slot, flip the handle, and the coin would drop down, striking the bell and land in an enclosed glass area. The bicycle wheels will then spin. When they stop, the player then adds numbers on the wheel and checks to see if he or she is a winner from the award card under the bicycle. The winner was paid in cigars. Original finish, original award card. Works and operates

as intended; however, the mechanism could stand to be lubricated (a little sluggish). The cash door is missing, as is the key. There is a chip in the top cabinet on the left rear side. The wooden rope trim is in great shape. (Photo: eBay seller edward33-21-013.) DBA: Bicycling was a craze at the time this trade simulator was made. I found where the Bicycle Trade Simulator by Sun Manufacturing sold for $13,000 (pre-2008). In 2012, a similar example sold for $9,200 at a toy auction. It is hard to say if condition played a part in the price of this object since these previous sales records do not tell the condition of the object. This is more “the going rate,” and these objects have sold for similar amounts for years.

$5,989 (50 bids): Wood & Brass Toy Boucher Live Steam Engine Ship Boat Pond Yacht. This is a superlative circa 1930s live steam engine model steamboat. It is 37 inches long and has unbelievable detail and quality to the workmanship. I have seen some Boucher steamboats approaching this level, but this is really something to behold. It is made of wood with brass and steel details and is quite heavy. Nothing was overlooked. It has several lifeboats with the more elaborate one actually having a clockwork motor that powers the propeller of the launch/lifeboat. The ship/boat itself also has electric wiring and lights in several locations, including a large spotlight in the upper bridge where there is also a telegraph and helm station. Behind the upper helm station near the brass smokestack, you can see the steam gauge and steam whistle. Underneath the pilot house is

the steam engine with the large boiler under the grate on the roof and water tank under the aft cabin. The boat is in good condition and mostly intact, aside from some railing and some of the rigging. The wood finish has some gatoring to the finish, but overall, it looks great. Propeller turns, and you can hear the little pop of the compression of the steam engine. Also included are two 4 x 5-inch period 1930s photographs taken by the builder of the boat with some of the info and builder’s name on the back (Bill Coleman, Pasadena, Calif.) (Photo: eBay seller gypsiegirlz.)DBA: Horace Boucher operated a store on Madison Avenue in New York City from 1905 to 1936 where he sold model boats, both fully made and kits. His company did sell some models that were professionally made. The skill of the individual maker had much to do with the quality of the finished model boat. The live steam had a fuel cell that, when placed in the boiler, would generate the steam to run the ship. This is a great buy as these ships do sell for large money, and the workmanship on this particular one is incredible.

Celebrities Love The $10,000 LEGO® Purse
By Mike McLeod I didn’t know how far I was behind the times until I recently read that LEGO® began making jewelry in 1979. Two hundred ten years ago on December 2, 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte placed the crown pictured here upon his own head, crowning himself Emperor of France in the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Pope Pius VII, representing the Catholic Church from Italy which Napoleon had conquered, represented the ecclesiastical half of the ceremony and handed the crown to Napoleon. Just prior, a sectarian ceremony was held on the other side of Notre Dame to show Napoleon would not be under the influence of the Pope. This event in history was the epitome of pomp and ceremony. It lasted three hours inside Notre Dame. But before Napoleon entered, a hot air balloon was launched (unmanned) decorated with 3,000 lantern lights in the shape of a crown. (This was just 21 years after the first hot-air balloon was launched, also in France.) It was aloft for 46 hours before sinking to earth near Rome—a good omen Napoleon thought.1 Upon entering Notre Dame, Napoleon donned a scarlet velvet and ermine fur coronation mantle that weighed 80 lbs. and required four men to carry it. A 400-voice choir, two orchestras and of musicians performed for the Bighundreds Shanty_07.14_SEA ceremony. Napoleon called the crown “the Crown of Charlemagne,” even though it was not the original crown which had been lost in the French Revolution. His intent was to elevate himself to

the status of Charlemagne, the King of the Franks, King of Italy and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. After crowning himself, Napoleon replaced it with a golden laurel wreath such as those worn by Roman rulers. Again, he was attempting to symbolically elevate himself, this time to the level of the Caesars. He then touched the head of Josephine with the Crown of Napoleon, naming her empress, but not leaving the crown on her head. Napoleon remained A poster of the balloon emperor until 1814 when launched before the crowning he was defeated and exiled of Napoleon Bonaparte. to the Island of Elba, near Tuscany, Italy. Escaping, he returned on power and wore the Crown of Napoleon again. However, he reigned for only 15 months before being permanently exiled on Saint Helena, a British island in the South Atlantic. He died there on May 5, 1821 at the age of 51. No other monarch or ruler of France chose to wear the Crown of Napoleon again, not even Napoleon III. The Crown of Napoleon resides today in the Louvre Museum in Paris. It is said that all the precious stones have been removed from it and replaced with glass.

A Person Who Should Be Famous: James Harrison by Mike McLeod
Most people don’t know his name or his face, but when you put ice in your glass, thank James Harrison who created the first commercial ice-making machine. Ted Carlton of Utah, Scott and Carolyn Brown of Memories Flea An’Tique Mall in Montgomery, Ala., Sherron Lawson, Roswell, Ga. did know of James Harrison’s contribution to modern society. (Editor’s note: Joe Campbell of Longleaf Antique Mall in Alexander City, Ala., correctly identified Judy Garland last month, but

was inadvertently left out.) James Harrison was born in Scotland in 1816. His father was a fisherman, but he did not follow in his father’s footsteps. Harrison attended college and was apprenticed to a printer. Traveling to London, he worked as a printing compositor setting metal type. It may have been there that he noticed how the metal type was cooled by the ether he used to clean it. Or it may have been after he sailed to Australia to set up a printing press for a company. Harrison stayed Down Under and worked for other newspapers as a compositor and editor and then went on to create his own newspapers in Geelong, Australia. He also created his first ice-making plant there, producing 6,600 lbs. of ice per day. This was too much for the town to use, so he moved to Melbourne, making ten tons per day there, again too much. Harrison later won an award for proving that meat frozen for different periods of time was still edible and nutritious once thawed. This was a major break-through on the level of that of Nicolas Appert’s. Around 1800, Appert discovered how to preserve food through canning, and he won 12,000 francs from the French Government which offered the prize during the Napoleonic Wars for a way to preserve food for its armies. (Side note: Appert canned in bottles, but his process was used with more durable metal cans in 1810—unfortunately, the can opener was not invented until 1855. Oops.) Harrison was not the first person to conceive of the

We spoke on the phone, and I asked if you would be able to evaluate theses two cabinet cards for me. Unfortunately, these are the only pictures I have of them for now; I hope you can still manage to figure out what they could be worth. J.S.: Your photographs are known as cabinet cards and date circa 1885. Both appear to be NYC militia soldiers, one an officer and the other enlisted men in the 6th New York National Guard, most likely. The officer was photographed by Sarony, a well-known New York City photographer in the late Victorian Era. The quality of his photographs is among the best; his imprint can be found on images of many famous celebrities of the day—there are several views of George Armstrong Custer known. Unless either of these figures turn out to have an interesting history and can be identified, unidentified cabinet cards of militia soldiers of this era are typically priced at trade shows between $25 and $50 each.
I have a pre-war/war era Kepi that I need some help identifying. JS: Kepis can often be difficult to date. Certain characteristics overlap eras, and headgear that postdates the Civil War even slightly has considerably less value in the market. Because they can be so close in appearance, numerous “Civil war kepis” sold in the marketplace are postwar or fabrications. This kepi dates circa 1875 due to some of these characteristics. The hat is more in the style of a French chasseur kepi that was used in the war but more popular in the 1870s and after. Characteristics that postdate the hat include a drawstring closure in the crown; there are Civil War examples of this, but they are unusual, and this is typical of post-war kepis. The lower height and finish of the sweatband is typical of 1870-1890 and not the Civil War. The hat insignia of crossed rifles was not adopted until well after the war. If we could see the maker of the button (the backmark), it could be dated also. Post-war kepis of this style are often sold in auctions, and most sell for about $200-$400. A post-war kepi, $200-$400.

My wife found two letters hidden in a cover of a book from her grandfather from General Clapp, Union Army. My research indicates that John Clapp was captured at the Battle of Plymouth. The letter is written in 1862 while en route to a Confederate prison in Macon, Ga. He was going on a hospital ship, but was not wounded too seriously. He had to be careful while writing since he was being watched, and paper was scarce. My interest is to have the letter appraised. I would hope that a letter written by a captured adjutant on his way to prison may be worth more than if leaving prison. How many people were ever able to write a letter while in transit to a Civil War prison? An Internet search for John Clapp documents the letter and his imprisonment for one year in Macon.

the officers’ prison in Macon where he had access to more comforts, especially since he could get money sent from home to buy some of the luxuries not accessible to enlisted men. Even his letter from imprisonment just states he is in good spirits, “…waiting to be exchanged.” Many officers from both sides were regularly exchanged, especially if they were politically connected early in the war. This was not as common late in the war when Lt. Clapp was captured. He was not paroled until March 1865, just a month before the war’s end. The first cover has stamps removed, unfortunately, making its value $25-$50 instead of up to a few hundred dollars. The letter is maybe $100. The second letter and cover both are torn in half, stained and have taped repairs, making this letter about $100, maybe. Condition is the utmost qualifier of value in the philatelic world, as in most antiques. Julia’s October Firearms Auction: Another World Record at Nearly $19.2 Million Julia’s once again raised the bar for the highest grossing firearms auction in history at an incredible $19.2 million in October. Julia’s has said many times that they do not sell the greatest number of guns in a given year, but they do sell the greatest number of high-end, expensive guns. Approximately 550 lots realized $10,000 or above (nearly 37% of the sale). In addition, over 60 items realized $50,000 or more. This is a greater number of high-end lots than most all other firearms auction houses in North America combined for the year. This auction included no fewer than nine major and iconic collections together with excerpts from numerous other collections. This in itself is a greater representation of important collections than all of the other North American auction houses combined. Most important of all is the results, and this was truly a successful sale for all concerned, whether one is selling high-end shotguns, rare cannons, 17th century weapons, Class III machine guns, etc. An incredibly scarce Villa Perosa gunner chest (only a couple are known to exist) with ten magazines. Estimated at $5,000-10,000, it realized $34,500. Day 1 also included Session III of the extraordinary Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess (of Zurich, Switzerland) collection of auto-loading weapons. This session offered an extraordinary Walther Armee Pistol with long barrel and matching magazine and original stock bearing SN #10. In superb condition, it was estimated at $75,000-100,000 and realized $155,250. A Walther Volkspistole all sheet metal SA prototype 9mm parabellum bearing SN #6 was estimated Frog Hollow - Antiques & Unique Items

at $65,000-95,000 and topped out at $143,750. A number of fine Lugers were offered. The most highly competed for was an important Baby Luger SN #4. This was a unique hand-produced gun believed to have been made around 1925 by DWM after George Luger’s death in an attempt to enter the low-priced pocket pistol market that was then burgeoning in Germany. This is the only known genuine original example; it topped out at $69,000. The day ended with the extraordinary Springfield Arsenal LLC artillery collection formed by John Morris. His longadmired collection of artillery was much anticipated by collectors from all over North America and the world. It is believed there has never been an offering equaling the Morris Collection. The top lot was the Spanish Siege Mortar dated 1750 and captured by DuPont at Fernadina, Fla., in 1862. It sold for $97,750. oAnother highly desirable lot was the Dahlgren Heavy 12 pounder bolt howitzer on original carriage that sold for $92,000. A spectacular 1681 Dutch Falconette on carriage made for Count D.W. von Innhausen und Knyphausen estimated for $75,000-125,000 sold for $80,000. Day II included the Leyton and Lewis Yearout collection from Montana. A rare iron-framed Henry went out at just under $55,000, and an exceptionally rare and mint Boss 410 O/U single trigger shotgun estimated at $100,000-200,000 that sold for $138,000. A Boss side by side 410 in equally extraordinary condition went out at $120,750. An exquisite pair of 28 ga. Holland & Holland Royal Deluxe single trigger game guns with Sinclair engraved scenes estimated at $75,000125,000 sold for $80,500. One of the earliest lots was a Colt factory presentation Model 1855 side hammer shotgun presented to a retiring Colt employee in 1868. Estimated at $35,000-50,000, it topped out at $57,500. Entering the Toy Hall of Fame
For 2014, the winners are the Rubik’s Cube, Green Army Men, and (soap) Bubbles. The National Toy Hall of Fame selected the three from a field of nominations, including: American Girl dolls, Fisher-Price Little People, Hess Toy Trucks, My Little Pony, Operation (the game), paper airplanes, pots and pans, Slip‘N Slide, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Green Army Men were invented in 1938. Soap, and hence its bubbles, has been in production since at least the Babylonians in 2800 B.C. Johnny-come-lately, the Rubik’s Cube was invented by Ernő Rubik in 1974. A Hungarian inventor, architect and professor at the Budapest College of Applied Arts, Rubik created his first prototype out of wooden blocks attached together with rubber bands. He tested it out on his students, and violà! The standard cube is 3x3x3, but there

is a V-Cube7 that is 7x7x7, and an electronic TouchCube that sliding a finger across a face makes the lighted cubes rotate. So pots and pans were up for the Hall of Fame but were denied. This is embarrassing. Especially when you consider that the Stick won in 2008 (with the Baby Doll and the Skateboard), and even the cardboard box won—way back in 2005. Actually, the cardboard box was overdue. It was invented by the English in 1817, and its popularity as a toy continues today. Just recently, 14-year-old Noah Cahoon got an investment deal from Kevin O’Leary on ABC’s Shark Tank for his company Paper Box Pilot which sells cardboard box decorating kits. It is hard to beat a box when it comes to simplicity, creativity and fun for a kid. Maybe pots and pans need a young entrepreneur to get them exposure on Shark Tank and a deal with O’Leary to get noticed by the induction committee. Or at least a press agent or PR firm. Do you remember which toys high-fived each other in 2013 in their induction ceremony to the Hall of Fame? Was it: the Blanket, Dominoes, Star Wars Characters, Rubber Duck, Chess, Hot Wheels, Doll House, Playing Cards or Life (the game)? The winners last year were: Rubber Duck and Chess. Kinda at opposite ends of the toy spectrum, wouldn’t you say? The others were all winners, of course, but in this order: Dominoes, 2012; Star Wars Characters, 2012; the Blanket, 2011; (Yes, the Blanket won a seat in the Toy Hall of Fame); Hot Wheels, 2011; Doll House, 2011; Playing Cards, 2010; and Church St. Ants.8th.10.2009_SEA Life, 2010.

Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori Cool Ideas for Repurposing at Holiday Time I have been known to say that just because something is old that doesn’t mean it is automatically valuable. I have junk in my house, my grandmother had junk in her house…sometimes it’s just older junk. With those sage words of wisdom offered to the masses, here are some creative ideas about what to do with those keepsakes that you just can’t part with but you don’t want to just store away in a plastic tub for the rest of your life. Objects that have some value to you on some level but that really won’t make a big difference when it comes to cashing in are the objects that are the topic of this particular column. Repurposing is very popular now and more so at the holidays. There are more people seeking out antiques and thrift store items in order to reuse or recycle them than those who just want to collect for collecting’s sake. Be sure you only repurpose those objects that really are not valuable. Once you know that you have a low value object, consider some creative ideas. Piecing up the plates. Plates can be among some of the most inexpensive collectibles that nearly everyone has hanging around the house, attic, or yard sale. Vintage decorative floral plates can be used at parties and even given away to guests as favors. They really spruce up a buffet line, block party, or family get together. Look around your grandma’s, aunt’s, and neighbor’s cupboards and see if you can spot any plates. I have some chipped yet colorful examples from the 1970s hanging around my cabinets that would be prime examples for this project. Some creative craft aficionados have taken such plates, broken them into pieces and used them in craft projects. Just break the inexpensive plates into 2 to 4 inch pieces and then use them as you would tiles. Some of the most popular repurposing objects for old plates are refrigerator magnets. Just simply stick an adhesive backed magnet to the back of your plate piece. Some damaged or chipped plates have been recycled into a decorative concrete frame around the kid’s
sandbox or kiddie pool area. They will look great stuccoed or glued onto wooden birdhouses, garden jardinières or bird baths, and trivets. Some folks have used broken plates as walkways leading to a garden shed or pool house. These are some great ways to use those damaged and not so valuable floral plates and keep the memories, too. Picking up jewelry. Damaged jewelry or fancy buttons— particularly cheap pieces of costume jewelry that can no longer be repaired or worn—can be reused and made into really cool art objects. Damaged pieces of costume jewelry can be the source for jewelry pictures by sewing or gluing the broken pieces onto a piece of velvet, felt, or fabric. Then, the textile is framed as you would a collage. Old broken jewelry or pieces thereof can be made into a brooch tussy mussy or brooch bouquet comprised of both fresh flowers and colorful fake gemstone pins in the shape of flowers. Country music star, Miranda Lambert carried a brooch bouquet at her countrythemed wedding. It is a cool union of vintage and Victorian, fresh and faux. Some pieces of costume jewelry are valuable so be sure to check out the value with an appraisal before you start taking apart the jewelry pieces that are still intact. However, the damaged pieces are fair game for your crafters out there. -----------Celebrity Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and awardwinning TV personality, Dr. Lori hosts antiques appraisal events worldwide. Did George Washington Have Wooden Teeth? All those who have heard this, raise your hands. How many of you believe George Washington had wooden teeth, and perhaps, that he carved them himself? For the answer, let’s turn to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association’s MountVernon.org website. There, on a page titled, “Wooden Teeth Myth,” it says this is a myth. His several sets of false teeth over time were made of ivory, animal teeth, gold wire and lead. The wooden appearance of his teeth may have been due to staining from wine. President Washington had but one of his original teeth left when he was sworn into office. He suffered great pain through much of his life from toothaches, abscesses and other dental problems. It is a wonder that George Washington survived to become the Father of Our Country. During his life, he contracted tuberculosis, diphtheria, smallpox, dysentery, malaria and tonsillitis. He died on December 14th, 1799 at the age of 67 from an inflammation of the throat or the epiglottis— compounded by more than half of his blood being drained through bloodletting to cure the inflammation. The only complete set of his famous false teeth are in the possession of the Mount Vernon Estate.
