Shops of St. Petersburg...“The Jewel of Florida’s Gulf Coast”

How true! St. Petersburg and Pinellas County offer an unequaled environment for work and play. Wonderful weather and miles of sandy beaches make it a magnet for people worldwide. St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops— is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod Before the discovery of a cracker in 2011, few people had heard the name of Ernest Shackleton for many years, if at all. The cracker, or “biscuit” as the British call it, was left behind by Shackleton’s party in the Antarctic in the early 1900s in the hut where they braved the elements. It was discovered in the 1960s and then sold in 2011 by Christie’s for about $1,950. Born in Ireland on Feb. 15, 1874, Ernest Shackleton was one of the many adventurers who explored the unknown corners of the world. He endeavored to reach the South Pole first, coming within 97 miles of it in 1909 before being forced to turn back by the harsh conditions and lack of supplies. (The cracker was found from this, the Nimrod Expedition.) Even so, Shackleton was knighted for enduring the hardships getting close and for other feats on the expedition. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole in 1911. At home, Shackleton was not particularly happy. He tried various ventures to gain wealth but was unsuccessful, so his thoughts turned back to Antarctica. Shackleton began planning his next expedition there—he would be the first to cross the entire continent, a distance of 1,800 miles. He called it the Trans-Antarctic Expedition. His first mammoth task was to fundraise the equivalent of $4 million to $5 million in today’s dollars to outfit and man two ships for the expedition. The crew of one ship, the Aurora, was to sail to the southern side of the continent and disembark a crew that would lay supplies in depots every 69 miles (1º of latitude) for the last half of Shackleton’s expedition. The other, the Endurance, was to carry Shackleton and his crew to the north side to begin their trek. Although he and his men never landed there, this was the start of the most heroic acts of Shackleton’s life. The Trans-Antarctic Expedition never began its 1,800-mile journey because the Endurance became frozen in sea ice in January of 1915. The ship and men were trapped there (although the ice did drift slowly) for nine months until October when the ice finally crushed a hole in the ship. Shackleton ordered the crew to transfer their supplies from the ship to the ice. Taking on water, the Endurance finally sank about a month

Nothing about this expedition was easy for Shackleton and his crew. They landed on the opposite side of the island from the whaling station. Rather than risk their lives again in the rough seas, Shackleton and two crewmen walked 32 miles in a day and a half cross country to the station. The rest of this crew also had to be rescued when sea ice blocked the harbor where they landed. In considering the overwhelming hardships that Shackleton overcame during about three years, the TransAntarctic Expedition would have been more aptly named after his, the Endurance. After his return, Shackleton wrote South: The story of Shackleton’s 1914–17 expedition, and he also lectured about the expedition. After World War I, Shackleton again planned another expedition of exploration, but this time, it was to the Arctic. For some reason, plans changed, and the Antarctic was again the goal. Obviously, this is a fishing lure—but not just any outdoor-store-variety lure. This is the Giant Haskell Minnow, and it was auctioned on Nov. 8, 2003 at Lang’s Tackle Auction for $101,200 (including 10% buyer’s premium). Created by gunsmith Riley Haskell of Painesville, Ohio, it was patented in 1859. It is probably the most famous fishing lure in the world. The Haskell Minnow is hollow, ten inches long and made of copper. Designed with fish scales and fins, it was a quantum leap ahead of the lure

December 5, 1791: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died at the age of 35 in Vienna, Austria. Recently, a single-page note he wrote to a friend requesting the return of three scores of his music was sold for $217,000 by RR Auction of Boston. Mozart died penniless and buried in a pauper’s grave.
December 5, 1839: George Armstrong Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio. Care to guess how hold he was at the Little Bighorn? While you think about it, Custer’s battle flag sold for an incredible $2.2 million in 2010 by Sothebys. His Spencer carbine carved with “G.Custer - 7 Cav USA” offered by Heritage Auctions in 2012 went for $179,250.1 How old was George Armstrong Custer when he met his fate at the Little Bighorn in Montana? He was just 27 years old. For an interesting article on why there really wasn’t a “Custer’s Last Stand,” see www.historynet.com/ten-myths-ofthe-little-bighorn.htm. December 5, 1901: The creator of Mickey Mouse was born in Chicago, Walt Disney. He dropped out of high school to fight in WWI but was too young. After the war, he joined the Red Cross and was an ambulance driver in France. After that, his brother Roy found him a job creating ads. A 1928 Mickey Mouse poster sold in 2012 by Heritage Auctions for $101,525. 1928 Mickey Mouse onesheet stock poster, 27 x 41 inches. (Photo: Heritage Auctions, www.ha.com.) December 9, 1992: Buckingham Palace announced the separation of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. In 2014, a slice of Prince Charles’ and Lady Diana’s wedding cake in a white and silver presentation box sold for $1,375. The 33-year-old (in 2014) piece of cake was not fit for a queen by then, or a princess, but the collectible box and card reading, “With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince & Princess of Wales,” were worth the royal sales price.
December 10, 1896: Alfred Nobel died in San Remo, Italy. A pacifist who ironically invented dynamite, Nobel left the equivalent of $265 million today to fund his namesake prize, and 526 Nobel Prizes have been awarded in the categories of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. Nobel spoke five languages fluently and held 355 patents.
James Watson

In the past few years, the Nobel medals of James Watson and Francis Crick—the discoverers of DNA—sold for $4.7 million and $2.2 million, respectively, the highest ever paid for those medals. December 14, 1799: George Washington died at Mount Vernon. December 14, 1861: Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, died of typhoid at Windsor Castle. R.J. Reynolds’ Prince Albert Tobacco introduced in 1917 was not named after him. It was named after his son Edward VII, who was known as “Prince Albert.” Edward VII was King of the United Kingdom from 1901 until 1910 when he died.

December 15, 1939: Gone with the Wind premiered in Atlanta. Clark Gable attended, as did Vivien Leigh and Margaret Mitchell. Gable did not win an Oscar for Best Actor for the film; that (somehow) went to Robert Donat for Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Gable did win a Best Actor Oscar for 1934’s It Happened One Night, and that Oscar was eventually sold for $607,000 to Steven Spielberg. He donated it to the Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. According to ModernFirstEditions.net, a first edition Gone With the Wind with original dust jacket, all in fine condition (which are extremely rare), could sell for $100,000.

December 16, 1944: While flying to Paris from England to entertain troops, Glenn Miller’s small plane disappeared over the English Channel, probably due to mechanical failure in the icy conditions. He was never found, and the plane was not listed as missing for 72 hours because the Battle of the Bulge began the next morning.

Beethoven at age 13. (Photo: RobertG; public domain CC BY SA.3)
December 16, 1770: Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. Deaf by the age of 30, he wrote and conducted his Ninth Symphony two decades later. Its manuscript was sold by Sotheby’s for more than $2 million. A lock of his hair sold for £8,125 this year, also by Sotheby’s. (A lock of Mozart’s hair outshone Beethoven’s at £35,000.) Beethoven once said: “Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman.”
December 17, 1775: Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Hampshire, England. Her writing desk can be seen in the British Library in London near handwritten lyrics by the Beatles. Which is better, Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility?

December 23, 1888: Vincent van Gogh cut off his left ear because of his depression. It is a myth that he only sold one painting in his lifetime. Actually, he sold two…and some drawings. A selfportrait was sold in 1888 to Sulley and Lori, art dealers in London. The Red Vineyard is the painting usually credited as being his only sale.2

I am the curator of a small GAR museum in Aurora, Il., and have inherited over the years a mish-mash collection of military artifacts collected by veterans’ groups. I have virtually no provenance to work from with most of the artifacts. I have a couple in my collection that will be very valuable for education and display if they are authentic, but it is equally possible that they are reproductions. I found your information while researching a CSA belt plate. I hope you might be able to help me authenticate this belt plate that is 1 7/8 x 2 5/8 inches. It has a slight curve to it. There are three belt hooks on the back, which have marks on them consistent with hand-hammering. There is a casting error in the center of the “S” resulting in a small hole that goes clear through the center of the plate. I would very much appreciate any help you could give me in authenticating this artifact. I don’t want to display it to the public in error as a period-authentic piece if that is not the case. Thank you so much for your time. JS: Your buckle appears to be an original Confederate enlisted belt plate made in Atlanta. These plates were issued to Army of Tennessee troops under General Joe Johnston while in winter camp around Dalton, Ga., in early 1864 before the Atlanta campaign unfolded. These buckles are excavated by relic hunters in areas occupied by this army. Non-dug examples are scarcer and bring some premium if they have a fine patina, as this example appears to have. Excavated examples typically sell for $2,000$3,000; this specimen would bring $3,500 or so in the Civil War collector’s market. An authentic Confederate belt plate, $3,500.

Hello—found your site on the internet and was hopeful you may be able to tell me if this kepi is from the Civil War. If not what timeframe it’s from and value? Inside the hat on liner: “Army Standard B. Pasquale Co Inc. 223 Sutter St. San Francisco, Cal.” Thanks a lot! Much appreciated. JS: Your kepi dates to about 1890. Pasquale was a well-known San Francisco military and fraternal regalia dealer in late 19th century and well into 20th century. They sold everything, swords, uniforms and accessories that the well-dressed militia officer would need. Similar militia headgear is generally priced around $50-$100 at antique shows.
A post-Civil War kepi from Pasquale of California, $50-$100.

John, wondering what this musket is worth. It is in good condition with all parts intact. JS: Your musket started out life as a flintlock, later converted to percussion, probably about 1850 or just prior to the Civil War. The marking “NEW HAVEN on the lock plate denotes the musket was originally made by Eli Whitney of New Haven, Ct., about 1812. The model is most often known in the literature as model 1808. There were many different conversions from flint to percussion; some performed by arsenals and others by blacksmiths, gunsmiths or any other competent mechanic who could make the gun “more modern for percussion-cap ignition. The lines of the hammer are unusual, and almost have a folk art appeal along with the layered brass/copper bolster. Your gun does appear complete including the ramrod, which is often missing. There could be other proofs stamped on the barrel which might tell you which state originally purchased

this gun (often “SNY for New York or “S.C. for State of Connecticut) as most Whitneys in this configuration are state militia purchases and not U.S. government contracts. Regardless of state markings or not, you can find similar guns priced at antique arms shows for an average price of probably of $1,200 or so. Percussion-conversion muskets are quite common to the market and generally sell at auction in fine condition between $600 and $800; however, most of these are later 1820s-1840s original manufacture. An American musket that could have seen the War of 1812 should probably bring a premium.

I am contacting you regarding two Confederate states loan certificates that I recently found. These items are not the bond documents which have coupons attached, but rather they have different amounts written in (one is $400 and one is $1,000), and they indicate that the loans paid 8% per year over a five- or 10-year period. They are dated 1862 and 1863. I have found very many similar documents that have the coupons and preprinted amounts, but I have been unable to locate many like these. The Virginia historical society does have an image on their site which shows one very much like these I have. I am interested in obtaining an initial assessment of whether these items carry much potential value. JS: Your two “loan certificates” are better known as Confederate bonds. There are several reference books that break them down into many subtypes. The original 1961 reference on the subject is by Grover Criswell, Confederate and Southern States Bonds; his reference numbers are most commonly used, though there are more recent publications. As you noted, many bonds had coupons that were clipped when interest was due. This type of bond is noted by Criswell as a stock certificate. There are four different borders known on your $400 certificate vignette of a sailing ship. This is referenced by Criswell as CR106 from a total of 175 different types. There were 13,284 of this particular stock certificate issued in varying amounts. This certificate was printed by Hoyer & Ludwig in Richmond, VA. The other versions of this particular bond were published by J.T. Patterson & Co., Columbia, S.C. Your other stock certificate (CR126) with the vignette of a reclining figure with charts and globe is a labor issue, as you can see in the right hand border stating it was from the Confederate Treasury Act of February 20, 1863. This particular certificate was printed by Evans & Cogswell, Columbia, S.C. There were 6,381 of this certificate issued. Both of your certificates appear in good overall condition, though the CR106 appears to be cracked at several folds with soiling and damage to edges. It will sell for less than the CR126. These certificates are among the most common of Confederate Bonds; their retail values are between $100 and $200 each.

By Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $3,750 (19 bids, 9 bidders): Antique German Carette Wind-up Tin Toy Car All 4 Orig. Passengers & Headlights. This is an early 1900s German tin car by Georges Carette. This car is an excellent example of Carette's work and is featured on the cover of the book, The Great Toys of Georges Carette. It is in fairly good condition for its age and has all four original passengers and original headlamps. The lithography on the body is in fairly good shape, but the passengers have more wear. The driver is missing the tabs on his bottom that would hold him in the seat. There are various dings and rusty spots. The tires are missing, as well as the canopy; otherwise, everything seems to be there. Approximately 12 inches long x 5 inches wide x 7.5 inches high. (Photo: eBay seller funkyarchaeology.) DBA: Given the condition of this car, I would say that the seller got a good deal. This price is pretty much the “going rate” for this object in a good condition. This one exhibits missing parts and some rust. George Carette was a Frenchman who married a German woman from Nuremberg. He founded the company bearing his name in 1886 and became a major player in the luxury tin toy industry. His company made other objects such as phonographs, optical objects, and music discs. He never gave up his French citizenship and was deported from Germany during WWI, and the company ceased to exist in 1917. George Carette died in 1925. $7,200 (71 bids, 21 bidders): Coleman Lantern ARC 250 Hanging 316 Rare Gas Outside Lamp System. 1914 Coleman No#250 in great used condition, some scratch marks and a few small dents. I have not seen one like this. They made lamps that ran off a central gas tank. They were used with the hollow wire system. This has all of its original parts, down to the globe. The globe has some chips on the edge of the openings, and there is a crack at the top of the rim. This almost looks just like the ARC Lamp No#316 but without the tank. But this has parts that the arc does not, like the gas lines running up inside the lamp through the top and coming together at the top. This is where the main line attaches. There are some photos from the Coleman book showing the lamp. (Photo: eBay seller bubblesbarbie.)

Colonial Williamsburg’s 68thAntiques Forum Examines Early Republic Treasures The 68th Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum convenes Feb. 1924, 2016 and promises guests a trip through the nation’s first half century, when seismic cultural shifts spawned astounding change in the American decorative arts. “Creating an American Identity: A Revolution in Decorative Arts, 1776-1826” features a series of programs highlighting the expertise of top historians and curators from around the nation, with optional regional tours and workshops available for registered guests. “With independence from Great Britain, the United States was free to trade with nations around the world. As technology enhanced tradecraft, migration within and beyond the former colonies blurred the lines between regional styles,” said Ronald L. Hurst, Colonial Williamsburg’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president of collections, conservation and museums. “These forces together revolutionized American decorative arts
in the Early National period.” Highlights of this year’s forum include guest presenters: Philip Zea, president of Historic Deerfield, Mass., who will discuss “The Revolution in Craftsmanship: Fate, Fashion and Furniture in the War for Independence”; Matthew Thurlow of the Decorative Arts Trust, whose presentation is titled “Fit for the Virtuous Woman: A Neoclassical Lady’s Writing Desk from Baltimore”; and scholar H. Parrott Bacot, who will address “Louisiana Furniture: the Acculturation Process, 1735-1835.” Optional bus trips precede the forum and depart from the Williamsburg Lodge. They include the overnight “Plantations of the Albemarle” Feb. 18-19 led by Robert A. Leath, vice president, collections and research and chief curator of The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) at Old Salem, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Sally Gant, MESDA director of education and special programs.
Optional one-day bus trips Feb. 19 are: “South of the James: Powhatan and Amelia Counties,” led by Sara Lee Barnes, library associate, University of Virginia Library, and independent scholar Gordon Lohr of Richmond; “The Lower James: Bricks and Stones and Colonial Bones,” led by antiquarian Ralph Harvard and Matt Webster, director of Colonial Williamsburg’s Grainger Department of Architectural Preservation; and “Richmond’s Finest: The Georgian Revival Houses of William Lawrence Bottomley and Herbert A. Claiborne” led by J. Thomas Savage, director of museum affairs, Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library. Optional curator-led workshops Feb. 24 at the Bruton Heights Collections and Conservation Building are “Eagles, Bellflowers and Tapered Legs: Neoclassicism in American Furniture,” “Up Close and Personal: A Study of Post-revolutionary Portraits,” “Treatment Techniques in the Textile Conservation Laboratory,” “Punch Bowls to Peace

What's Selling on eBay Continued from Page 30 DBA: The Coleman lantern was developed to extend the working hours of farmers. This is the same configuration of the first of Coleman lanterns produced, except that the fuel container below the globe is missing. I have never seen the tankless version of this lantern, although one of its first demonstrated uses was at a night football game. This early Coleman lantern was 20 inches high and weighed fourteen pounds with an empty fuel tank. Improvements made the lantern lighter and thus, easier to use. These improvements occurred early in the manufacture of the Coleman lantern, so this arc version is very rare. Even rarer is the tankless version, which is probably why it has been sold for $7,200. I could find a 316 (with tank) for sale for $2,000. $3,600 (34 bids, 13 bidders): Lockheed Super Electra Travel Agency Manufacturer Model Airplane. This is an antique/ vintage wood and metal model Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra Airliner Travel Agent or Manufacturer Desk Model. I purchased several very old model aircraft from
the estate of a man that worked for Lockheed and then Douglas aircraft manufacturers in the 1930s through the ‘60s, which is where this came from. This model is large with a 33-inch wingspan and is in pretty good condition. It has a Northwest Airways logo on both sides, and the number NC17382 is the number of the first Model 14 that Northwest put into service in 1938. The model looks to be very accurate, but has a couple odd details. One being the tricycle landing gear, but possibly they experimented with that design. The other being the tail empennages are a little off in shape in comparison to the ones seen on a model 14, possibly replaced? That being said, the remainder of the aircraft is very accurate to scale. There is a stamping "Model 14" on the base bottom. The cockpit has very detailed pilots and equipment visible inside. There is a mechanism inside the model that makes both propellers spin when you spin just one. The model is dirty, and the paint has crackle lines in the paint, but overall, it is a very rare and very attractive old model airplane. (Photo: eBay seller Gypsiegirlz.) DBA: I did find some similar age and size model aircraft that sold at auction. The three highest sales were $3,000, $2,200 and $19,000. It is hard to find comparable sales for rare objects, such as this. I suspect that this particular airplane had some experimental features that did not make it into the production line of the Super Electra. The average buyer would not have knowledge of those features and that may be a factor in why this one sold for much more than other models.

The Shops of Nashville, TN Nashville, Tennessee was founded in 1779 by a group of Overmountain Men and named after the American Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash, but today everybody knows it as Music City, with its legendary country music venues like the Grand Ole Opry House, The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and the historic Ryman Auditorium. The nice thing about Nashville is that it's a major city (the 4th largest in the Southeast and the 2nd largest in Tennessee, after Memphis), but it's small enough that you don't get that big-city, overwhelmed feeling. A lot of the action is in The District, downtown.
And that's good news for people who want to have fun in Nashville and enjoy its legendary honky-tonks, dive bars and dance halls, while being mindful that it's also a great place to shop for antiques.
