“We are left in awe by the nobility of a tree, its eternal patience, its suffering caused by man and sometimes nature, its witness to thousands of years of earth’s history, its creations of fabulous beauty. It does nothing but good, with its prodigious ability to serve, it gives off its bounty of oxygen while absorbing gases harmful to other living things… Its fruits feed us. Its branches shade and protect us. And, finally, when time and weather bring it down, its body offers timber for our houses and boards for our furniture. The tree lives on.”1

At the outset of World War II, George Nakashima returned to America and married Marion Okajima, settled in Seattle and had a daughter, Mira. A son, Kevin, joined the family after World War II. In the year following Pearl Harbor, the Nakashimas were sent to a Japanese internment camp in southern Idaho. In Camp Minidoka, George met and was tutored by a carpenter trained in traditional Japanese woodworking. There, he learned attention to detail and to strive for perfection, even under the difficult circumstances of a lack of available wood. Mira Nakashima was only six months old when her George Nakashima’s philosophy reflected his style of family was relocated to the high desert of Idaho. Mira has no craftsmanship: earthy, unexpected, creative, often symmetrical memories of being in the camp at that young age, particularly and asymmetrical in the same piece of furniture, elegant and since her family left after about a year. definitely unique. His work, which often incorporates slabs “When I went back to the site of the camp, I didn’t of irregular tree trunks or roots, is highly recognizable and remember it specifically, but I felt like I’d been there before,” appreciated. Mira said. George Nakashima was born on May 24, 1905 in Spokane, While visiting, she met a farmer who had employed her Washington. His parents moved to America from Japan, and father to tend his field of carrots. The farmer related how both were from the lineage of samurai. George Nakashima told him with tears in his eyes how grateful After earning a bachelors degree in architecture, he was for the job. The farmer was happy to have men from the Nakashima studied in France for a time before returning to camp who worked so hard and were happy to work. America and earning a masters degree, also in architecture, The farmer also told Mira how the camp authorities from M.I.T. He then traveled internationally and was hired required him to drive out each day to pick up the work by an architectural firm in Tokyo. After a while, involved his overseeing the building of an ashram dormitory the farmer gave his keys to the men and told them to drive in India. There, he became a disciple of the ashram’s leader Sri themselves. He was tired of the back and forth; obviously, Aurobindo, and he also began to design furniture. George and the men in the crew had gained his trust. “My father grew up in Seattle and was a boy scout,” Not much remains today of the camp that was 3.5 miles George’s daughter Mira Nakashima explained to me recently. long and one mile wide. The camp was not fully constructed when the internees began to arrive, but every housing block eventually had a mess hall, laundry facility, bathrooms and a recreational hall that was used as a school, for worship services and for community events. The camp had libraries, cooperative stores, a hospital, theaters, a warehouse, barbershops, a watch repair shop, nine baseball fields and swimming in an irrigation canal.3 The climate in the Idaho desert was brutal—hot summer days, cold nights, heavy snow in the winter, and volcanic desert dust blowing almost constantly and covering everything. It was reported that sometimes the dust storms were so heavy darkness fell on the camp.4 To many today, these hardships pale in comparison with the civil rights that were lost. However, in light of the recent controversy surrounding the Allen Eaton Collection of internment art that was going to be auctioned, 5 Mira shed a different light on the internment camps in American history: “The angriest people were not those interned; it was the next generation who weren’t there themselves. It was blown up to be a civil rights thing, but it was an overreaction. Those there just accepted it as that’s the way it is. They came here to America to be free,” and ironically, internment in a camp was the price they paid to show their patriotism. Some families were able to leave the camps as they found sponsorships or by invitation from friends in other parts of the country. Surprisingly, the majority did not leave Camp Minidoka until they were forced out before it closed on Oct. 28, 1945. There were several reasons why most wanted to stay: some older people did not want to be a burden on their children; others feared racist violence after the war; others had no home, job or business to return to; some feared repatriation to Japan, which was advocated by some politicians for internees they thought were still loyal to Hirohito; and others had lost confidence in their ability to survive on their own without government assistance.6 Seeking to redress some of the wrongs, the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 provided about $20,000 to every surviving Japanese-American internee. In 1943, George and his family were released due to the efforts of his former employer from Tokyo, Antonin Raymond. The Nakashimas moved to New Hope, Penn., where they lived and worked on Raymond’s farm. From there, George Nakashima’s philosophy of furniture came to fruition and

eventually to acclaim. George’s discipleship in the ashram and education in Camp Minidoka heightened his innate skills and aesthetic to yield a style of functional beauty. Avoiding ostentation, his furniture found beauty in purity while highlighting the character of the wood, particularly its gnarled imperfections. His “yoga of doing” found the perfection in imperfection. “When he first started out and was working with a Japanese carpenter, he used found materials around the

camp and bitterbrush from the desert,” Mira recounted. “When he came back here, he didn’t have money for good wood but got cutoffs from the lumber industry and went from there. After Dad was able to get these cutoffs, he made friends with loggers in the area and got trees others didn’t want; then he oversaw the milling to get the right direction and thickness.” Why does George Nakashima’s craftsmanship captivate people? “Because it is different. My father integrated life and work by not tying into the big-corporation mindset of mass production and making money. To him, it was more important to make beautiful furniture; money would come later. He combined utilitarianism with beauty. “I had a tour group through this morning, and they said they felt peaceful here and felt the furniture was alive,” Mira said. “Dad always felt he was giving trees new life, and life continues. Not everybody understands this; it’s not for everyone, but if you are sensitive to it, you will sense life in each item we make. People realize this when they have sold

The Shops of Historic Senoia, Georgia Senoia, Ga. (pronounced Se-noy -- rhymes with boy or toy) is said to be 100 years and 35 miles south of Atlanta. Home of the 2010 and 2012 Southern Living Idea Houses, Senoia is also the backdrop for over 25 feature films, including Fried Green Tomatoes and Driving Miss Daisy, as well as the popular TV shows Drop Dead Diva and The Walking Dead. Downtown Senoia was the site of the “safe haven fictional town known as Woodbury. There are regular movie tours on the weekends that take you to many of the locations where these shows were filmed.

Named for Princess Senoyah, mother of the Chief of the Creek Indian Nation (William McIntosh), Senoia has a historic district filled with over 100 historic homes and churches. Main Street features well established antique shops, two bed ‘n’ breakfast inns and an eclectic selection of one-of-a-kind gift shops. Take I-85 south to exit #61 (Fairburn/Peachtree City) and turn left onto Hwy. 74. Drive about 18 miles, crossing over Hwy 54. Continue on Hwy 74 until you come to a traffic light at Rockaway Rd. Turn right onto Rockaway Road, which becomes Main Street. To learn more about Senoia, follow us on facebook at enjoysenoia.

The architecture he created on the property here [his workshop, studio, and home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania] now is a Historic National Landmark. Another landmark in his life was to leave the camp in the desert and start a legacy here in New Hope.” Coming from a generation embroiled in war, George Nakashima desired peace for the world. “My father had a dream to make Peace Altars for

If people could meet around them, we could get a little closer to world peace…sitting or standing around one has a unifying affect.” He planned to build seven Altars of Peace (which are large tables), one for each of the seven continents. Three Altars of Peace have been installed thus far: one in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City; another in the Russian Academy of Art in Moscow; and a third in Auroville, in Pondicherry, India, an offshoot of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram where George was a disciple at one time. A fourth is planned for Capetown, South Africa at the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre. The New York Altar of Peace is made from two matching walnut planks; it measures 10.5 x 10.5 feet and weighs more than 1,000 lbs. Splendid Metalwork and Jewelry by Robert Reed Splendid coverage of the appealing reign of handwrought arts and crafts jewelry is back for the curious. A newly published book takes a keen look at such treasures from the late 19th century through most of the first half of the 20th century. Hand Wrought Arts and Crafts Metalwork and Jewelry: 1890-1940 is a solid book. It offers refreshing coverage of a remarkable era, the best in a long time. It has been noted that back in 1893, the grand World’s Fair in Chicago led the way to the so-called just and equal art movement in America. That particular World’s Fair “…heralded this new egalitarian art movement that gave rise to a plethora of metalwork and jewelry companies by the turn of the century. Chicago led the movement by pairing progressive politics with the frenetic pace of industry; there would be no starving artists in this new economy but plenty of good-paying careers and ideal working conditions.” The fine volume notes that the “Chicago influence” spread and thus did this unique and lovely form of jewelry. Individual chapters in one section of the book include the Marshall Field and Company, Arts and Crafts Shops, the Evanston

Artist Network and the Oak Park. Still another section of chapters deals with regional arts and crafts industries. These are grouped by states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. The book’s author Darcy Evon documents how the various art and crafts jewelry trends of this nature spread throughout the Midwest and eventually the rest of the country. Evon has published various articles on the Midwest Arts and Crafts Movement and is a historian for the Kalo Foundation in Park Ridge, Ill. Hand Wrought Arts and Crafts Metalwork and Jewelry 1890-1940 by Darcy L. Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod

Emily Brontë's only novel, Wuthering Heights, is considered to be one of the greatest literary accomplishments by a British author. Yet, when it was published in 1847, it was not well received by the critics due to its dark theme of revenge for unrequited love and its challenges to Victorian morals. Brontë Paterson’s Magazine in 1848 reviewed the book saying: “We rise from the perusal of Wuthering Heights as if we had come fresh from a pest-house. Read Jane Eyre is our advice, but burn Wuthering Heights….” Graham’s Lady’s Magazine that same year didn’t hold back: “How a human being could have attempted such a book as the present without committing suicide before he had finished a dozen chapters, is a mystery. It is a compound of vulgar depravity and unnatural horrors….”1 Emily Brontë did in fact die the year after her book was published—but not from suicide. She succumbed to tuberculosis, as did her four sisters: Charlotte, Anne, Maria and

Elizabeth. The first two born, Maria and Elizabeth, contracted the airborne disease at a boarding school and probably brought it home with them. They died at about the ages of 10 and 12. Emily died of it at age 30, Charlotte and Anne at 39 and 29, respectively. Three months prior to Emily’s passing, their only brother Branwell probably died of tuberculosis, too. Emily, Charlotte and Anne were all authors, and all three sisters published their first novels at about the same time. Charlotte’s first book, The Professor, was not accepted for publication, but Emily’s Wuthering Heights and Anne’s Agnes Grey (based on her experiences as a governess) were accepted, but only after making the rounds of several publishers. However, Charlotte quickly submitted a second novel, Jane Eyre, and it was an almost instant success. Due to the prejudice against women authors at the time, all three chose to publish under pseudonyms: Currer Bell (Charlotte), Ellis Bell (Emily), and Acton Bell (Anne). As you see, all three used the first letters of their real names in choosing a pen name. “Bell” was the middle name of Charlotte’s future husband, Arthur Bell Nichols. Looking back, it was a wise decision on Emily’s part to publish as Ellis Bell—imagine if the reviewers and the general public knew that “depraved” Wuthering Heights was written by a woman! Even if she had attached her real name to her book, it is highly doubtful that anyone would have believed that quiet, reserved, not-look-you-in-the eye Emily Brontë could be the source of such a powerful and shocking novel. A family friend, Ellen Nussey, described Emily at age 15 in her book

The Shops of Nashville, TN Nashville, Tennessee was founded in 1779 by a group of Overmountain Men and named after the American Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash, but today everybody knows it as Music City, with its legendary country music venues like the Grand Ole Opry House, The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and the historic Ryman Auditorium. The nice thing about Nashville is that it's a major city (the

4th largest in the Southeast and the 2nd largest in Tennessee, after Memphis), but it's small enough that you don't get that big-city, overwhelmed feeling. A lot of the action is in The District, downtown. And that's good news for people who want to have fun in Nashville and enjoy its legendary honky-tonks, dive bars and dance halls, while being mindful that it's also a great place to

shop for antiques. GasLamp Antiques (and GasLamp Too) is one of the South's biggest and best places to find fine antiques and furnishings, artisan, industrial, mid-century, vintage, modern and more, all in more than an acre of climate-controlled space. Reminiscences of Charlotte Brontë: “Emily Brontë had by this time acquired a lithesome, graceful figure. Her hair, which was naturally as beautiful as Charlotte's, was in the same unbecoming tight curl and frizz…. She had very beautiful eyes—kind, kindling, liquid eyes; but she did not often look at you; she was too reserved. She talked very little.” 2 Branwell Brontë’s 1834 Yet, Emily had a will of painting of (l-r) Anne, Emily steel. While suffering from and Charlotte hangs in tuberculosis, she refused England’s National Portrait to see a doctor until on her Gallery.

Clarksville is a lovely Southern city located in north central Tennessee, about 45 miles north and west of Nashville and just south of the Kentucky state line. Fort Campbell, the U.S. Army base and home of the 101st Airborne Division, is a neighbor to the north in Kentucky and one of Clarksville's primary employers. Another is Austin Peay State University. Clarksville was named for General George Rogers Clark, the frontier fighter and Revolutionary War hero

deathbed. She most likely saw the same symptoms in her sisters who died from it and possibly knew nothing could be done. (Drugs for treating tuberculosis were not available until after World War II.) Charlotte said Emily was, “Stronger than a man, simpler than a child, her nature stood alone.”3 Emily’s father Patrick Brontë was a clergyman. Her mother Maria died of cancer when Emily was three. At that time, an aunt came to live with the family and care for them. Growing up, the Brontë girls spent much of their childhood making up stories in fantasy worlds they created with their brother. No wonder that all three—and also their father—were authors. Emily Brontë was born on July 30, 1818 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, and she died in Yorkshire on Dec. 19, 1848. She ventured away from home but rarely. She never married, and Emily Brontë never knew during her life that her only novel would become a classic.

Celebrity Sighting Becoming Commonplace at the ICA/Metrolina Show in Charlotte, N.C. The ICA Show at the Metrolina Expo in Charlotte, N.C., is the place to see and be seen. The show is steadily developing quite a celebrity following. Star spottings have included: Paul Silas, head coach of the Charlotte Hornets; former Carolina Panthers star running back DeAngelo Williams; and Adam Lazzara, lead singer of the band Taking Back Sunday. Lazzara was accompanied by his wife, Misha, also well-known for her enterprise Good Grief Vintage, a specialty boutique. TV’s bachelorette Emily Maynard has been a recent shopper, along with NASCAR greats such as Phil Ford, Humpy Wheeler, Jimmy Spencer and Joey Logano. All have been spotted making their way among the rows of furniture, jewelry, historical artifacts and art, along with Molly Grantham, the popular news anchor for WBTV who not only shops the show but is a dealer with her cork creations. Her interest has spread to other prominent Charlotte news people. Under new management, the ICA Show is a great place to discover fine and traditional antiques. It is also one of the hippest places in Charlotte. Where better to discover so many unique items to decorate one’s home, person and life? A recent advertising campaign mentioned food trucks, a beer garden and steampunk! Quite a departure from past campaigns, thus creating the desired effect of a younger and more “hipster” crowd. But millennials are not getting all of the attention. There are always those, of all ages, who prefer elegant to eclectic, classic to kitschy and traditional to trendy. There are many dealers, such as Joyce and Hoot Williams, who make their way from the bluegrass section of Kentucky every month to bring Charlotte patrons some of the best antique furniture available. Joyce and Hoot sold out quickly in June but promise another spectacular load for August. And why is it that vintage jewelry is so much more beautiful than new jewelry? How does patina impart perfection? The answer may be a mystery, but a good person to ask is Diana Shewmaker from China Grove, N.C., who will be welcoming Charlotte show patrons with a pretty smile and an incredible knowledge of jewelry through the ages.

In August, don’t miss your chance to be a celebrity with Sizzlin’ Selfie Summer. Have your picture taken with a vintage fire truck or famous NASCAR legend Pete Pistone who will be on hand to discuss, “When racing was racing.” There will also be a “selfie” booth stocked with vintage hats, glasses and more to make you look like a movie star. Anyone showing up with a selfie stick gets in free! For more info, visit ICAshows.com or call 704-714-7909.
