NETSUKE:

Japanese Art in Miniature

By Marsha Vargas Handley, President of the International Netsuke Society Netsuke are truly unique to Japan. Because Japanese men had no pockets in their kimonos to carry personal items, a unique art form developed to allow them to suspend objects from their kimono sash (obi). One might say that the absence of pockets resulted in the invention of netsuke (figure 1). These utilitarian objects served as toggles to support tobacco pouches (tabakoire), medicine boxes (inro) and similar items suspended by a cord from the obi. Exactly when netsuke came to be used in the present form is debated. In early Japanese history, bags for carrying flint for lighting fires were usually attached to a short sword and only in later periods were pouches attached to an object such as a netsuke. In 16th century paintings, actors in Kabuki theater are shown wearing a pouch and inro with a natural gourd functioning as a netsuke, which was attached to the obi by links. Gourds and sea shells were the most popular natural object to be used as a netsuke. The netsuke, whether a natural object such as a gourd or a carved figure, needed to be tied to a pouch or inro. Many of the more skilled carvers would use a natural opening, such as an area between the legs of a recumbent animal, but most netsuke will have two holes (himotoshi) that the cord would pass through to secure the object being carried to the netsuke. A genuine piece will have the attachment holes positioned in such a way that will allow the netsuke to sit on the top edge of the obi. Netsuke were not worn suspended like a pendant on a necklace, so when you see holes in the upper shoulders or top of a piece, it is modern and was never meant to be used as a netsuke. Japan is surrounded by seas, and the Tokugawa-era shoguns prohibited foreigners and outside influences. This natural and enforced isolation allowed strong national 1. Illustration of a man wearing a netsuke and inro. characteristics to develop in the arts. In early Edo paintings we see that samurai and wealthy merchants used a simple round button-type object to tie onto their pouches. This form of netsuke is called a manju (figure 2). It is only in the late 17th and 18th centuries that three-dimensional netsuke (katabori) appeared in the form of figures or animals and became what people now think of as netsuke. Early netsuke tended to be large in size, with a wide range of subjects, like this wonderful ivory of a seated stag, on the cover, its head raised, with mouth open braying. This 18th century netsuke is unsigned, but from the style we can determine that it was carved in Kyoto. Because most of these early netsuke were not signed, we cannot identify the carver unless similar signed pieces have been found. In Japan, wood predominated as the favorite material for sculpture, and this extended to netsuke. Today when people think of netsuke, they may immediately think of an ivory carving, but ivory was an expensive material imported during the Edo period and made up only a small percentage of netsuke. Netsuke were made from many materials, including but not limited to wood, ivory, horn, bone, stag antler, metal and ceramic. Because the netsuke was to sit on the top edge of the obi, it was desirable to have a lightweight material so it did not pull down on the fabric of the obi. This made heavy materials 2. such as stone not as popular or useful. An example of a typical mid-18th century netsuke is of a recumbent boar by the artist Minko (1735-1812) who worked in Tsu. It is a compact piece carved from black persimmon wood with inlaid metal eyes and perhaps was commissioned by a person born in the Zodiac year of the boar (figure 4). The animals of the Zodiac were very popular in netsuke as were figures that represent legends and historic figures, such as this Chokwaro Sennin releasing his magic mule from its gourd (figure 5). A dog playing with an abalone (awabi) shell by the artist Okatori (ca. 1800) combines a Zodiac animal in a natural situation, making it very appealing (figure 6). The rat as a Zodiac animal shows up frequently in netsuke, but if we look at the rat by Kaigyokusai shown in figure 7, we see that he is paired with a mallet. A collector would immediately recognize that this represents Daikoku, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, the god of wealth. The mallet identifies Daikoku as the subject because it is his primary attribute, which he uses to confer luck and wealth. A rat is his second attribute, perhaps because rats are drawn to extra food, which you would not have unless you were wealthy. The person wearing this netsuke perhaps wished for wealth and luck or was showing that he had already achieved it. An interesting and often overlooked type of netsuke is those that perform multiple functions, not only keeping the pouch or inro from slipping from the obi but also serving another purpose. “Ash pan” netsuke, for example, were often carried with a tobacco pouch, giving the wearer something to tap hot ash from the smoking pipe into—fire was a constant fear. A traveler might carry a compass and sundial netsuke so he would be able to tell the direction he was headed and when he might arrive. A traveling merchant might use a yatate netsuke that holds a miniature brush and ink. As the wealthy businessman evolved in Japan so did the demand for netsuke as it was the fashion in the early 18th century to carry elaborate tobacco pouches and inro as a sign of success. The demand for netsuke continued to increase until the mid-19th century and only slowed with the Meiji period when Japan was opened to the West in 1868, and Western-style clothing with pockets became popular. As the use of netsuke declined in

Meiji Japan, the netsuke carvers, as well as the makers of lacquer inro, had to look to the West for support. Because these wonderful carvings were utilitarian objects that no longer had a purpose, many Japanese stopped acquiring them, but foreigners coming to the recently opened Japan were fascinated by these miniature sculptures. Historical records of one French antique dealer show that on one buying trip to Japan in the 1880s he collected more than 5,000 netsuke to send back to France. In the early 20th century, there were a number of European collectors, and the early books on netsuke were written by Europeans. Today, the International Netsuke Society has a membership of more than 500 collectors, and it publishes a quarterly Journal, as well as holds biennial conferences for the purpose of studying netsuke and their related appurtenances. The next conference will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, September 4-8, 2015, with lectures, workshops and dealer exhibitions. $1,542 (14 bids, 8 bidders) Rare Russian Cloisonné Enamel Silver Gilt Hatpin. The hatpin measures 21 centimeters in total length and has a ball-shaped head which is approximately 2 centimeters in diameter. The hatpin has fabulous cloisonné enamel in colors of royal blue, sky blue, white and red on a silver gilt ground. (Photo: eBay seller ladywants66.) DBA: The heyday of hatpins was approximately 1890 to 1920 when hats became large and elaborate, along with the hairdos. At the time of WWI, metals were needed for wartime uses so frivolous things as jeweled hatpins were not so popular. Hats became smaller, and restraint was the order of the day. After the war, they did not regain the previous popularity. There are many collectors of hatpins and hatpin societies or organizations. Hatpins were and are considered jewelry. The most valuable hatpins are those that have hallmarks, are made of precious metals or jewels, and have survived in good condition. Cloisonné is a particularly skilled process where glass is fused to metal at high temperatures. So this hatpin meets all of these high-value points. While this is on the higher end of prices for hatpins, there are many collectors, and this one is more valuable than most. I would think that this is a fair price for this hatpin, and most likely, it will hold its value. $1,209 (52 bids): Fabulous Antique Dutch Solid Silver Figural Cow Cream Pitcher Jug with Jeweled Eyes. The creamer is the finest example of its kind, featuring jeweled eyes which I believe are real garnets. There are Dutch hallmarks on the bottom. The creamer is in excellent all-original condition, measures 5.5 inches long and 3.75 inches tall, and is 80% pure silver. (Photos: eBay seller joanies_house_of_treasures.) DBA: Compared to prices for silver cow creamers from retail sites, the buyer got a very good deal. Silver cow creamers became very popular in London about 1760, and collectors particularly note those by John Schuppe. While this one does not have those British hallmarks, these short scrawny legs on the cow and the fly on the lid show his influence as collectors still call them “Schuppe legs,” and this cow does have the same shaped “fly”.

$1,148 (20 bids, 10 bidders): Antique Secessionist Arts & Crafts, 5-Bell Dinner Chimes & Stand, circa1900. The design of the stand is from the early Arts & Crafts, Secessionist period. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12.) DBA: This dinner bell chime stand is from the earliest time or beginning of the Arts and Crafts period, which makes it particularly interesting and valuable. Most antique dinner bells are of the fourbell xylophone type, and this one has five. The art of the dinner bell to announce dinner has almost become a thing of the past. Given the price for most Arts and Crafts period accessories, the seller got a good buy. $1,526 (34 bids): Ca. 1889 S. MAW & SONS Chemist Spanish Ad Toothpaste Antique Luster Pot Lid & Jar. This is crafted by the London England-based company S Maw, Son & Son. The lid is written in Spanish and reads, “Pasta Rosa Blanca exquisite preparation for preserving and whiten teeth. It purifies and freshens the breath preparation Aldersgate Street London. (Photo: eBay seller estateauctionsinc.) DBA: This has several groups of collectors. The container was made by the Maw Company, a London manufacturer of scientific and medical equipment. They started in business as J and S Maw in 1828, then became S Maw, S Maw and Son, and S Maw Son and Thompson. After the retirement of Thompson, the company became S Maw, Son and Sons, which is the label on the container. This is a high price for an advertising container, but this meets several collecting groups: Maw antique scientific equipment, dental equipment, and Spanishlanguage containers.

EASTBROOK

Name This Famous Person By Mike McLeod

You can furnish everything from a dorm room to a mansion, or find that missing piece of Grandmother’s china.

J.R.R. Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien), or Ronald, as he was called by friends and family, was a professor of Middle English and Old English (also known as Anglo-Saxon) at the University of Oxford. He mastered Latin and Greek as a boy and Finnish other languages as an adult. For a lark, he would create his own languages. All of this explains how Tolkien wrote such indepth and at times, difficultto-read novels as The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King and others. The Hobbit was written as a children’s story, and it had an interesting conception. While grading exam papers in about 1930, Tolkien described the beginning thusly: “One of the candidates had mercifully left one of the pages with no writing on it (which is the best thing that can possibly happen to an examiner), and I wrote on it: ‘In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.’ Names always generate a story in my mind: eventually I thought I’d better find out what hobbits were like.”1 The collector in all of us wonders: where is that exam booklet today? Anyway, thus began a saga that would sell 100 million copies of The Hobbit in about 30 languages and lead to the selling of about 150 million copies of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.2 The six Peter Jackson Hobbit and Rings movies have thus far grossed $5.9 billion worldwide at a cost of about $1 billion to create and market.3 Born on Jan. 3, 1892, Tolkien’s father Arthur was a bank clerk who moved with his wife to South Africa to further his banking career. There, Ronald was born, but at the age of three, he and his mother moved back to England with his father to follow. Unfortunately, Arthur died before he was able to leave the country. This left the family in financial straits. In 1904 at the age of 12, Tolkien lost his mother Mabel to diabetes; insulin was not discovered until about 1921. In an act of great charity, the family’s Catholic priest took in and raised Ronald and hisWetumpka.bc.11.13_SEA.indd brother Hilary Arthur.

After Great Britain entered World War I in 1914, Tolkien enlisted in the army as an officer in 1916. Ronald married Edith Bratt in March of 1916, and in June, he left for France and fought in the skirmishes in the Battle of the Somme. He saw some action in France but contracted trench fever and was eventually sent back to a hospital in England. During the war and recuperation, he began writing his stories of elves, dwarves and gnomes; some of those stories later appeared in his Book of the Lost which was published posthumously, along with other books, through the editorial efforts of his son Christopher. In all, the Tolkiens had three sons and a daughter. After the war ended, Tolkien wrote for the Oxford English Dictionary before eventually being hired by a university. He remained in education for the rest of his career. Tolkien was close friends with C.S. Lewis and is credited with helping Lewis convert to Christianity from atheism. Ronald was devoted to and totally in love with Edith throughout his life. She died two years before he did on in Sept. 2, 1973. They are buried together in the same grave in Oxford, Timeless Antiques.8th.H..12.08_SEA.indd England.

The year before he died, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the Order of the British Empire honor and appointed him the level of Commander. There are five levels in the Order of the British Empire, the top two being Knights. Commander is level three, but even so, it is a great honor. Never to be forgotten, J.R.R. Tolkien will always remain as a legend of literature and the true Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkien was identified by Julie Kimbrell of the Old School Antique Mall in Sylva, N.C., Leslie Leaver from Simpsonville. S.C., and Sharron Lawson of Roswell, Ga. ---------------TheTolkienForum.com. Shops of St. Petersburg...“The Jewel of Florida’s Gulf Coast” There's an old saying about St. Petersburg, Fla.; People who live there love it; businesses that located there stay; and visitors who go there to shop and play want to come back again and again. How true! St. Petersburg and Pinellas County offer an unequaled environment for work and play. Wonderful weather and miles of sandy beaches make it a magnet for people worldwide. St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. The advertisers on this page offer a taste of what we mean.

Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important northsouth link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

The Antique Merchants in Clinton represents over 100 dealers that offer their wares in 20 shops and malls, all conveniently located in and around the Historic Downtown District, along Market and Main Streets. All the shops sell a wide array of antique furniture and collectibles. Additionally, a number of lovely boutiques and specialty stores have also come to Market and Main Street, to add to the shopping experience. Can You Name This Famous Antique? by Mike McLeod

Recognized the world over, the Scotty dog is a game piece from the game of Monopoly. While Monopoly does not fit the general standard of being 100 years old to be classified as an antique, it is an 80-year-old-or-so classic with great credentials: *More than 275 million games have been sold worldwide, and it’s available in 111 countries, in 43 languages. Since 1935, more than one billion people have played the game. The longest Monopoly game in history lasted for 70 straight days. *The most expensive version of the game was produced by celebrated San Francisco jeweler Sidney Mobell. Valued at $2 million, the set featured a 23-carat gold board and diamondstudded dice. In 1978, the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog offered a chocolate version of the game priced at $600. *More than six billion little green houses and 2.25 billion red hotels have been “constructed” since 1935. *More than 20 tokens have been cast since the Monopoly game was introduced in 1935 such as the horse, dog, car, elephant, purse and lantern. In the early 1950s, the lantern, purse and rocking horse were removed from the game. They were replaced by the dog, horse and rider, and wheelbarrow. Recently, a cat replaced the iron. *Nearly 10 million worldwide mobile phone downloads of the game have been made in 27 countries and 20 languages. *Tokens from the United States Monopoly: Here & Now Edition were flown into space aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2007. *Escape maps (made of silk), compasses and metal files were inserted into Monopoly games provided to some POW camps inside Germany during World War II. Real money was slipped into the packs of Monopoly money.1 * For its 80th anniversary in France, Hasbro included real money in some of the games, one having a complete set of Monopoly money and a complete set of real money totaling 20,580 Euros ($23,268).2

Charles Darrow’s patent Elizabeth Magie’s patent illustration for Monopoly illustration for The in 1935, looking almost the Landlord Game, 1904. same as today’s game and bearing distinct similarities to Magie’s gam of that day. He did not create the concept for a property-based board game, but neither did Nike invent the athletic shoe. Magie is due credit for the concept, but in comparing their patents, Darrow made the better mousetrap, so to speak. In his patent application, the game board and pieces look virtually the same as the standard game today. Because of her political and financial beliefs, Magie provided two methods for playing her game: the current way of playing Monopoly with one winner and a “share-the-wealth” way in which everyone wins. The former was the most popular.

Charles Darrow sold the rights to his game of Monopoly to Parker Bros. in the 1935 after making the game by hand at home for about two years. He is largely credited of the inventor of the game. However, Elizabeth Magie filed a patent request for The Landlord’s Game in 1904 that bears remarkable similarities to Monopoly, including four “R.R” spaces in the middle of each side of the board, a “Public Parking” space, “Go to Jail,” “Luxury Tax” and so on.
