This Month’s Cover Story: In addition to being decorative, Staffordshire figures also recorded events in everyday life between 1780 and 1840. These earthenware figures were intricate, but not expensive, so just about everyone could afford them. Today, they remain affordable to collectors and a way for them to touch the past. On the cover is “Tee total,” showing tea offered as an alternative to alcohol. The piece is attributed to the “Sherratt” potbank and was made in Staffordshire, circa 1835; 8.1 inches.

Nestled along the scenic shoreline of the Caloosahatchee River on the Gulf coast of southwest Florida, Fort Myers is an interesting blend of young and old. The city sports the youngest population in Lee County, with a median age of 32. It is also home to the historic winter residences of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Extensive renovations of the downtown waterfront are underway, with new restaurants, nightclubs, apartments and artistic venues providing energy and growth.

Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our

33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.

All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.

Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.

There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.

Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net

Senoia, Ga. (pronounced Se-noy -- rhymes with boy or toy) is said to be 100 years and 35 miles south of Atlanta. Home of the 2010 and 2012 Southern Living Idea Houses, Senoia is also the backdrop for over 25 feature films, including Fried Green Tomatoes and Driving Miss Daisy, as well as the popular TV shows Drop Dead Diva and The Walking Dead. Downtown Senoia was the site of the “safe haven” fictional town known as Woodbury. There are regular movie tours on the weekends that take you to many of the locations where these shows were filmed.

Named for Princess Senoyah, mother of the Chief of the Creek Indian Nation (William McIntosh), Senoia has a historic district filled with over 100 historic homes and churches. Main Street features well established antique shops, two bed ‘n’ breakfast inns and an eclectic selection of one-of-a-kind gift shops. Take I-85 south to exit #61 (Fairburn/Peachtree City) and turn left onto Hwy. 74. Drive about 18 miles, crossing over Hwy 54. Continue on Hwy 74 until you come to a traffic light at Rockaway Rd. Turn right onto Rockaway Road, which becomes Main Street. To learn more about Senoia, follow us on facebook at enjoysenoia.

The Antikythera Mechanism is the earliest known analog computer. It was discovered in 1900 by sponge divers exploring a Roman shipwreck off the coast of the Island of Antikythera near Greece. It is believed to have been created before 100 B.C., perhaps even before 200 B.C. John Walrod of Antique Maison in Bay St. Louis, Miss., Scott and Carolyn Brown of Memories Flea An’Tique Mall in Montgomery, Ala., Ted Carlton of Utah, and Keith Nansteel correctly identified the Mechanism. Bronze statues on the sea floor first attracted the attention of the divers. The shipwreck is now thought to have been a treasure ship because it also contained pottery, glass, coins, jewelry, marble statues of horses and the Antikythera Mechanism. More than 30 bronze gears and 80 fragments of the Mechanism were found. According to Michael Wright, the curator of a museum in London who created a working model of the Mechanism, It may have originally been constructed with 50 or 60 gears.1 Incredibly, the Mechanism is only 3.5 inches thick, a miracle of miniaturization in the ancient world. In all, it measures 13 inches high and 6.75 inches wide. The largest gear is about 5.5 inches in diameter and has 223 teeth. The diminutive size of the Mechanism is impressive, but the functions of the Mechanism are incredible. It had working dials on both the front and on the back. When a knob on the side was turned, a dial showed the cycles of the moon and sun and the movements of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. On the back were two dials with a zodiac in the inner ring and a calendar of 365 days on the outer ring. The circular calendar also showed 235 months, or 19 years. This is called a Metonic Cycle, so named for Meton of Athens (5th century B.C.) who discovered that 235 lunar months are almost exactly equal to 19 solar years. The Greeks used this cycle as the basis for their calendar since 12 lunar months do not equal 365

$8,449 (4 bids): Harrison Ford Indiana Jones Shirt Authentic Costume. An original Western Costume Company costume made specifically for Harrison Ford to wear in the Indiana Jones movies. It is the khaki shirt that you see him in all the movies. It is authentic. It has been appraised by Bison Productions/ Archives. It comes with the letter of authenticity and the studio photos of Harrison wearing the shirt. The shirt has a few spots on the front and back edges and button edge. DBA: Movie memorabilia is one of the highest priced collectible categories. Harrison Ford’s kangaroo whip from the Indiana Jones series was sold for $32,000 at Christie’s, London in November of 2012. It was reported to have re-sold for $114,000 (but I could not confirm that story). Harrison Ford’s costume as Han Solo from Star Wars is offered for sale at $75,000 in an Internet store. Other examples of movie memorabilia that have sold for fantastic prices: Judy Garland’s blue cotton dress with polka dot trim from the Wizard of Oz was sold for $360,000. The air pistol used by Sean Connery as James Bond in four films was sold for $300,000. Assorted costumes worn by Julie Andrews and the rest of the cast in The Sound of Music was sold for $1,560,000. Movies that seem to be the best to collect from are most of the science fiction/action movies, such as Star Trek, Star Wars, ET, Superman and classics like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, or The Sound of Music. $4,054 (12 bids): WAS Benson Table Lamp Antique Arts And Crafts. (1854–1924) promoted the most important themes of the Arts & Crafts movement. This movement was in stark contrast to the Victorian style with its formal and highly decorative components. The Arts and Crafts objects were designed in a more informal, relaxed style and were more practical. One example of this involves the finish for lamps. WAS Benson formulated a thin lacquer that would prevent the dulling of brass and copper, a problem with the humidity in British houses. This eBay price is in keeping with the usual price or cost of similar lamps. This was a good buy as these will continue to be rare.

DBA: Advertising memorabilia continues to be a very collectible category. This object is different from the usual categories in that this product is no longer produced. It is probably the fashion of the beautiful young lady that brings this object to this price, especially with this being a thick cardboard object rather than the painted tin or more longlasting materials. --------------------

was paperwork involved, and it was not a simple process.) Even though the value was only pennies, the profit margin was between 200% and 400% per stamp. But this was not how Ponzi bilked thousands of people of their investments. Even though his scam only lasted a few months in 1920, he was at one point bringing in the unbelievable sum of $1 million per week. Obviously, there was no way to buy that many IRCs, convert them to stamps, and sell them quickly enough to make good on his investment promise of paying out $150 in 90 days for $100 invested. Actually, Ponzi was paying the $150 earlier, in 45 days, to whip up the greed in more investors. Of course, he wasn’t buying IRCs. He was using the new investors’ money to pay off the old investors. Ponzi had seen this scam before. When he emigrated to America and then moved to Canada, he found a job at a bank that provided loans at a high interest rate. It also offered high interest rates on deposits. When the bank ran short of funds to pay depositors, it used the money from new investors to pay them. The bank folded, of course, and Ponzi lost his job. But he kept the scam. For a few months in 1920, Ponzi and his wife Rose lived the high life. He bought a mansion in Lexington, Mass., and they became quite a sensation in the community. Ponzi’s scheme began to unravel in July after local newspaper articles questioned his solvency and the feasibility of buying and selling so many IRCs—several times the amount that the U.S. Post Office said were in circulation. These articles

and investigations by the authorities caused a run on his office from investors demanding their money back, which Ponzi and his staff of 30 confidently paid off. With up to a million dollars coming in per week before the run, cash was stashed everywhere in his office. Ponzi actually held out for about two weeks of paying back huge lines of angry investors, but eventually, the cash that he could put his hands on ran out. The authorities ordered his bank, Hanover Trust Bank of Boston, to stop cashing his checks to cover the creditors, and the house of cards came crashing down. The bank also came crashing down, as did four other Ponzi-infected banks. In all, Ponzi took in about $20 million1 (multiply that amount by 11 to get 2014 dollars), and he paid back about $7 million. The other investors who did not get to Ponzi in time received about 30 cents on the dollar. Ponzi went to federal prison for a few years for fraud, was released, and then was arrested immediately by Massachusetts police. However, he made bail and fled to Florida, where he set up a real estate scam. Ponzi was eventually arrested and sent back to Massachusetts’ where he served about seven years in prison. The Federal Government then deported him to Italy because he never obtained American citizenship. From Italy, Ponzi went to Brazil, where he died a pauper on Jan. 18, 1949. ------------------- 1 Bloomberg Businessweek, “The Greatest Financial Scandals,” http://images.businessweek.com/ss/09/03/0311_madoff/3.htm

Staffordshire Figures Book, Richly Illustrated Showcase by Robert Reed Staffordshire Figures 1780-1840: Manufacturers, Pastimes, & Work is a richly illustrated showcase of a book, deserving of the legendary pottery itself. Solidly presented are more than 900 full-color photographs of every manner of activity from ballad singers to town criers and from shepherds to musicians. Additionally, there are fascinating figures of farmers, gardeners as well as children and adults involved in the simple act of reading. At the heart of this fine volume are the works of noted Staffordshire figure makers including John Dale, Samuel Hall, Ralph Salt, Ralph Wedgwood, Leeds Pottery, Charles Titternsor, John Walton and many more. “This work, the first of four volumes, explores the enormous array of enamel-painted earthenware figures made

between 1780 and 1840,” notes author Myrna Schkolne in the book’s introduction. Such figures are “dubbed” as Staffordshire because nearly all of them were manufactured in the long familiar Staffordshire Potteries, according to the author. However, “Some were made in other parts of the United Kingdom.” Schkolne points out that all of the figures in the volume were decorated with enamel painting and adds, “While under-glazed and color-glazed decorations were also in use at the time, pretty enamel paint was the favored mode of embellishment.” Included with the lavish photographs is a value guide for each item. The value code shows a letter A for Staffordshire figures valued up to $1,000 and then progresses through the alphabet to the letter G for pieces valued at $25,000 and over. Equally helpful are the detailed color illustrations of the various makers’ marks. Myrna Schkolne is a noted scholar of English earthenware who has lectured on the subject extensively and is also the author of People, Passions, Pastimes, and Pleasures: Staffordshire Figures 1810-1835 published in 2006. Staffordshire Figures 1780-1840: Volume 1 Manufacturers, Pastimes & Work by Myrna Schkolne, hardcover, 914 color photographs, 279 pages, is $69.99 plus shipping from Schiffer Publishing, www.schifferbooks.com. ----------Book review by Robert Reed, Antique and Collectible News Service.

Consignments Wanted Touted as one of Julia’s finest fall toy, doll & advertising auctions in recent memory, the auction had all the makings for a blockbuster right from the start. Drawn fresh from three major collections, combined with select pieces from individuals from all over the United States, it was a nonstop parade of quality, condition, rarity, and diversity. With estimates that were realistic and conservative, bidders were treated to one spectacular piece after another. Combined with Julia’s expansive marketing program, their reputation for honest and fair dealing, and some of the finest catalogs in the industry, the results were phenomenal, setting a few world auction records along the way. When the final hammer fell, Julia’s tallied over $1.4 Million, nearly a half million dollars over the total presale estimate of approximately $935,000. We are now accepting quality consignments for our spring 2015 toy, doll & advertising auction. Whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us today for a free consultation. Touching the Past: Staffordshire Figures 1780 to 1840 By Myrna Schkolne

Benjamin Franklin. Attributed to Ralph Wood. Made in Staffordshire, circa 1785. H: 13 inches. (Photo: courtesy the William Herbert and Nancy Hunt Collection.)

Thomas Dartmouth Rice in the role of Jim Crow titled, “Jim Crow.” Attributed to the “Sherratt” pot bank. Made in Staffordshire, circa 1836. H: 6.8 inches. (Photo: courtesy of Andrew Dando Antiques.)

Gretna Green marriage group (l.) and the New Marriage Act group (r.). Made in Staffordshire circa 1825; 7.4 inches high. Figures in all photos are lead-glazed earthenware with enamel decoration.

Dandy and dandizette. Made in Staffordshire, circa 1820; 6.8 inches high.

Early Staffordshire pottery figures are a prism for peering at the past through the eyes of those who made them. Fashioned between 1780 and 1840, they afford intriguing three-dimensional glimpses of people and events that we could not otherwise see because photography had not yet been introduced. The figures are intrinsically delicate, but they exude a naive robustness and a colorful cheerfulness that charms. Today, Staffordshire figures are a rewarding collecting area because they are decorative and engaging, and fine figures can be found at prices that suit most pockets. A lovely small figure can be acquired for no more than the price of a modest big-city hotel room, and some collectors build interesting and satisfying collections at this level. Others prefer figures that cost much more. Figures vary widely in rarity, availability, quality, condition and commercial appeal, so the price range is broad. For example, the group titled, “Tee Total,” (on the cover) would cost about $8,000 today, while the sweet pair of dandies could probably be bought for under $2,000. The figures that we dub “Staffordshire” were, for the most part, made in the heart of Britain in the county of Staffordshire. From about 1780, Staffordshire’s pottery industry blossomed as improved modeling and painting techniques yielded attractive earthenware figures that were affordable alternatives to costlier porcelain figures. The figures were time-consuming to make because they required many molded parts and careful, all-over decoration. For design inspiration, the potters initially looked to classical imagery and existing porcelain figures, but as the market for pottery figures grew, they also turned their attention to their surroundings. A multitude of early Staffordshire figures reveal the full spectrum of everyday life as it was then—street vendors, chimney sweeps, children at play, musicians and gardeners are all captured in clay. Others portray meaningful lifecycle events, including courtships, christenings and weddings. The figures in the photo of the two wedding groups remind us of how different marriage customs and laws were then. The bride and groom on the left stand before the blacksmith’s anvil in the village of Gretna Green, Scotland. This was the wedding destination of choice for couples who eloped to Scotland to evade the rigorous requirements of England’s marriage laws. The plaque reads, “John MacDonald aged 79 a Scotch esquire run of with a English girl aged 17 to Gratnal Green the old blacksmith to be married.” The group to the right celebrates the passage in 1823 of the New Marriage Act, legislation making it difficult to annul a marriage that violated minor marriage laws. Here the plaque reads “The new Marriage Act. John Frill and Ann Boke aged 21. That is right says the parson Amen says the clark.” In other words, once the marriage ceremony was concluded, there was no going back. Early Staffordshire figures are, of course, dressed in the garb of their day. Notice that neither bride in the weddings photo wears a white dress. White dresses were not yet mandatory bridal attire, so a bride simply wore her best dress. Dandies—the name given to spiffily attired couples of that time—afford particularly amusing glimpses of bygone fashions, and these affected twosomes remind us of how ridiculous fashion can be if taken to the extreme. The dandy gentleman in the photo has a tightly cinched waist, courtesy of his corset. He carries a “man bag,” known as a reticule, to hold his necessary objects because pockets should not disturb the fit of his fashionably tight trousers. Not to be

outdone, his dandizette reveals her ankles for the first time in western fashion history. Of course, headline-grabbing murderers and their victims are portrayed in figural form, as are influential people from all walks of life—radical activists, religious leaders, politicians, military heroes, royalty, and actors and actresses, to name a few. Included are personae of American significance, such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Dartmouth Rice, the young white American actor, who created the role of Jim Reading maid. Attributed to the “Sherratt” potbank. Crow. Made in Staffordshire, circa Other figures document events that influenced the 1820; 10.6 inches. course of western civilization including the Agricultural Revolution, the French Revolution, and the drive to abolish slavery. Very much at the forefront in that day was the drive to spread literacy. A host of figures show people reading, such as with the “Reading Maid” figure, for this today commonplace activity was then being newly introduced to the masses. Another national movement also afoot in this period was the campaign to reduce drunkenness. From the 1830s, England’s teetotal movement proposed tea as a wholesome

Touching the Past: Staffordshire Figures 1780 to 1840 Continued from Center Gloss The English pugilist Thomas Cribb (l.) and his American challenger Thomas Molineaux (r.). Made in Staffordshire circa 1810; Height: 9 inches (l.); 8.7 inches (r). (Photo: courtesy John Howard; www. antiquepottery. co.uk.) alternative to alcohol, and tea is being served in the group titled, “Tee Total,” while the gentleman clutches his head—a hangover perhaps?   Expectedly, early Staffordshire figures depict the sundry sports of their day. Barbaric sporting groups show animal baiting that the population then relished, while other figures portray the dancing bear and dancing dog routines that have since vanished into the mists of time. Genteel lady archers and gentlemen with their guns abound, but those were not the days of sports stars as we know them now. Prior to 1780, England’s horses and dogs were its sporting stars, but in the 1780s, the first human sports stars rose to fame, and they were pugilists. The first international boxing

matches took place in 1810 and 1811 between a white English champion, Thomas Cribb, and a freed Virginia slave, Thomas Molineux. Their two fierce slugfests have gone down in the annals of sporting history, and of course, Molineux and Cribb were crafted in figural form.  Early Staffordshire figures help us understand what mattered to people in that day—the classical figures that influenced the décor of the time and the host of biblical figures that reflect the centrality of faith. They compel us to ponder how far we have—or have not—come from that not-so-distant time of child chimney sweeps and vicious animal sports. Collectively, the figures document the people and events that shaped their era, and ultimately, the world we live in today. Inevitably, life in England changed after 1840, and many of the people and activities recorded in earlier Staffordshire figures faded into the past. In 1839, the word photography entered our lexicon, and photographs, rather than figures, increasingly became the repositories of history. With the Industrial Revolution in full swing, simplification and massproduction were the order of the day, and simpler, cheaper, minimally decorated pottery figures became the norm. But early Staffordshire figures endure as colorful time capsules, storing within their clay bodies their tales of a bygone time. To hold one is to touch the past. ------------ Myrna Schkolne is the author of the recently published Staffordshire Figures 1780–1840, Vols. 1-4. These and her other books on early Staffordshire figures are available at most book sellers. She maintains a dialogue with the public on her website, www.mystaffordshirefigures.com.

A magic lantern slide of a Civil War painting, $5-$10.

By John Sexton

By John Sexton Mr. Sexton: Attached is a photo of Carters Gelatino-Albumen box of glass plates with scenes of the Civil War on them. I wanted your take on this item. I belong to the local Civil War roundtable, and one of the first to fall at Gettysburg was one of our own, Lt. Grover. JS: Your box of photographic glass plates with Civil War photogravures are most commonly known as “magic lantern slides.” They were quite popular in late Victorian America and around the world. There are numerous genres of subject material including Civil War scenes, made from photographs, paintings and other media. Before television, radio and even electricity, magic lanterns and their accompanying slides entertained countless families in their parlors in America well into the

20th century—before being phased out by other forms of entertainment. Magic lanterns that displayed and magnified these images are usually powered by kerosene flame and were made by many American and European manufacturers. Although scarce, these early projectors are reasonably priced when common examples are found, often under $100; however, rare examples can bring several thousand dollars. Different companies utilized different styles and sizes of slides, so you will find different size images and different styles of holders that these different machines utilized. The slides are fairly common in auctions, often found in fairly large quantities. Though quite interesting and diverse, the slides rarely bring more than $5 or $10 each in the auction market, and it is not uncommon to be able to buy lots of several hundred for about a dollar each.

War are not uncommon and usually issued to people of means. Victor M. Eppes (whose name is on the pardon) was no exception. He was a large landowner in Mecklenburg County, Va., having 77 slaves at the start of the Civil War. Indeed, Mecklenburg County had more than 12,000 slaves, making up over 60% of the population. Pardons were important to men of means, as they could then be involved in political and financial dealings with the rest of the country. Most of Andrew Johnson’s presidential documents are found with a facsimile signature made by A presidential pardon woodblock. Johnson was involved “signed” by Pres. in a train derailment just prior to Andrew Johnson, the Civil War, badly damaging his $100-$500. right arm. This injury would limit the use of his writing ability, and actually, signed documents by him are scarce.

Andrew Johnson presidential pardons to ex-Confederates have sold this year at auction for between $100 and $500, with the same woodblock-stamped signatures. Cowan’s auction in Cincinnati sold a pardon actually signed by Pres. Johnson for $850 hammer. These documents are scarcer, but they don’t demand a lot of money—unless they are pardoning a famous personality. A pardon for ex-Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest sold about 25 years ago for more than $20,000, and it was in poor condition with insect damage. Andrew Johnson was quite willing to pardon exslaveholders and was involved in punitive laws against the newly freed slaves, as we know from history, in contrast to Abraham Lincoln’s vision. Your document would probably have best marketability in Virginia to a collector interested in local history. In a well-advertised auction, it might surpass the auction results mentioned of $100-$500. --------------------John Sexton is an independent appraiser and expert of Civil War memorabilia. Shops of St. Petersburg...“The Jewel of Florida’s Gulf Coast” There's an old saying about St. Petersburg, Fla.; People who live there love it; businesses that located there stay; and visitors who go there to shop and play want to come back again and again. How true! St. Petersburg and Pinellas County offer an unequaled environment for work and play. Wonderful weather and miles of sandy beaches make it a magnet for people worldwide. St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important northsouth link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

New England Motel Antiques Shows Celebrating Its 30th Year in Brimfield, Massachusetts New England Motel Antiques Shows in Brimfield, Mass., will celebrate its 30th year in May 2015. Over time, New England Motel has been privileged to host the finest antiques and collectibles dealers from around the world. When the show was purchased, it included a small motel and 15 acres of woods. The first dealer sign-ups came in September 1985 when the inaugural show was held, and many of them are still on board today. What started as a 120-site show has today expanded to 400 sites, 72 of which are currently located in three pavilions (affectionately known to many as the “three barns”). New England Motel is where you’ll find Brimfield’s finest offerings: furniture, jewelry, silver, shabby chic, lighting, pottery, textiles, European and American, primitives, country primitive, industrial, design, and more. The dealers are knowledgeable and always guarantee their merchandise. The field is home to the original and largest food court in Brimfield—a great place to relax, meet with friends and

exchange stories about great merchandise and fantastic purchases. Other conveniences include on-site shipping, ATM machines and public parking central to all fields. Campers may enjoy real campsites that include electricity and water in a shaded area. For those visiting Brimfield for the first time, remember: not all shows open on Tuesday. New England Motel’s opening is Wednesday, at 6 a.m., but to celebrate its 30th year, they will have a Tuesday preview from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. New England Motel is a family-run business. Show promoter Marie Doldoorian and her sons, John and Bobby, want to thank all dealers and buyers for making the show what it is today—a fun and adventurous shopping experience. In celebration of 30 years, please join New England Motel for food and drink at the first-ever Tuesday preview, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. See you at Brimfield in May!

One such rarity, and the top seller among the over 80 leaded and non-leaded lamps in the sale, was a wonderful Tiffany Studios dragonfly table lamp, it overshot its $120,000-$140,000 estimate to land at $142,200. Other Tiffany leaded table lamps included an example with an amber geometric background highlighted by a Greek Key band in nicely contrasting purple, lavender, and aqua. It sold for $22,575. A scarce Tiffany green Linenfold table lamp (glass panels look like fabric) sold for $16,590. A Tiffany Studios chandelier with an openwork bronze top, a curtain of prisms descending from the cap and a hooked feather bulbous stalactite shade sold for $45,622. A lovely Tiffany floor lamp in a gold dore finish consisting of three lion paw feet supporting a ribbed stem, topped with

a cast Aladdin lamp and finished with a gold iridescent King Tut shade, shone for $10,665. An exceptional Tiffany Studios senior floor lamp base with onion decorated platform leading up the stem to a six socket cluster was a hot ticket for $31,402. A Pairpoint Puffy rose bouquet table lamp with pink and red blossoms covering the shade sold for $9,480. A Pairpoint Puffy tulip boudoir lamp with flowers highlighted by gilt stripe outlines likewise sold for $9,480. A Daum cameo glass and enameled rain scene lamp with a pointed dome shade decorated with windswept trees and pelting rain sold for $36,735. Art glass was another area to make a strong showing. Highlights included a sensual R. Lalique vase with its sides impressed with nude sirens and topped with a nude female figural stopper selling for $17,775. Also, a Loetz Phanomen overlay vase with blue iridescent decoration and violet highlights sold for $13,035. Steuben crystal included an unusual jagged rock sculpture with a gilt metal thistle bush emerging from it that sold for $4,740. Julia’s Surpasses All Expectations With Their Latest Fall Toy & Doll Auction As one West coast phone bidder put it, referring to Department Head Andrew Truman’s satisfaction with the auction thus far, “You can see that ear-to-ear grin all the way from California.” When the final hammer fell, Julia’s tallied over $1.4 million, nearly a half million dollars over the total presale estimate of approximately $935,000. Starting the show was the collection of the late Carol and Jerry Soling of Pound Ridge, N.Y., who spent the better part of 40 years amassing an astounding collection of windup toys, still banks, advertising, and coin-op. Highlights included a rare painted version Palace still bank that closed at $18,367 and a Lehmann tin windup, “Walking Down Broadway,” depicting a gentleman and his female counterpart walking their dog. It landed at $25,515, setting a new world auction record. A most unusual clockwork limousine from the 1920s in its original box and entitled, “The Polite Chauffeur,” that rolled, stopped, and the chauffeur emerged to assist the female passenger, sold for $3,555. An exceptional KiCo motorcycle with lithographed side panels and rider went for $5,332. A rare Distler motorcycle and with sidecar on the left hit $7,110. A lot of two Indian motorcycle toys went out at $4,147, more than 20 times estimate. A carved cigar store Indian attributed to master carver Samuel Robb sold for $29,625. An imposing three-sheet poster showing a life-size image of Buffalo Bill sitting on the sidelines of his great spectacle sold for $13,035, quadruple its estimate. An example picturing

a young Chief Red Cloud scouting a prairie landscape below, an illustrative copy for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World show, finished at $10,665. An action-packed example showing Buffalo Bill storming an Indian encampment with his of Rough Riders to save two settlers sold for $7,110. A marvelous poster showing a violent train robbery of a Wells Fargo payroll car, complete with exploding dynamite, hauled in $5,214. A vibrantly stone lithographed paper poster for Kickapoo Indian Remedies that featured a native princess found a buyer at $12,442. Movie and theater poster highlights included Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes tale, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” $18,960, and a large-scale “On the Bowery,” picturing Steve Brodie leaping from the Brooklyn Bridge, $10,072. A variety of other advertising included large-scale, handpainted tin signs by Ithaca Sign Works. One pictured a group of folks out for a Sunday drive in their open-air Ford and advertised Bierkamp’s sales and service garage. It sold for $16,590. Salesman samples included a Clinton hay rake with its original carrying case that sold for $20,145. Perhaps the big surprise in the coin-op section was the rare Goo Goo penny gum vendor with a decorated front iron casting over a wooden case and original side panel decals of Brownietype characters. One of the most highly sought after machines around, it brought $42,660. Julia’s also presented a vast selection of more than 200 dolls. A rare 21-inch Kammer & Reinhardt 107 boy doll known as Karl changed hands at $23,700. Julia’s upcoming auctions include their winter antiques, fine art, and Chinese artifacts auction in February, and a phenomenal firearms and military memorabilia auction in March. Julia’s next toy & doll auction, as well as the rare lamp & glass auction, will follow in June. Julia’s is currently accepting consignments for these and other upcoming auctions. Call immediately for inclusion in these exciting sales. For more information or to place offers on unsold items, contact their offices at 207-453-7125. James D. Julia, Inc., P.O. Box 830, Dept. PR, Fairfield, ME 04937. E-mail: info@ jamesdjulia.com. This Lehmann tin windup, “Walking Down Broadway,” sold for $25,515, a new world auction record.

French Quarter Museum Commemorates Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial with Exhibition and Symposium, through March 29th Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regular troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC), a museum, research center and publisher in the heart of the French Quarter, joins citywide commemorations presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans with an exhibition and a two-day symposium. The exhibition, titled “Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans,” sheds light on the leader of that improbable American victory. Located at 533 Royal Street in New Orleans, the free display is on view Tues.-Sat., from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., through March 29. Tracing Jackson’s rise from humble beginnings to immortality as a war hero and president, the exhibition covers some of the controversies (such as martial law and Indian removal) that attended his career. Rare objects—some belonging to Jackson himself—will be on loan from the Hermitage, the Library of Congress and elsewhere. Highlights from The Historic New Orleans Collection's own holdings include a selection of the infamous “coffin broadsides” printed by supporters of John Quincy Adams in the 1828 presidential election and rare funeral ribbons memorializing Jackson after his 1845 death. Subsequent uses of Jackson’s image demonstrate his lasting impact on New Orleans and the U.S. THNOC’s 20th Annual Williams Research Center Symposium, “Forgotten Conflicts: Indians, Andrew Jackson and the War of 1812 in the South,” will examine the War of 1812 and its impact on the South. The program begins Friday, Jan. 23, with a keynote address by Central Connecticut State University history professor Matthew Warshauer and will continue Friday, Jan. 24, with six additional presentations. All lectures will be at the Hotel Monteleone, at 214 Royal Street in the French Quarter. Registration rates range between $55 and $90 and include all the presentations, plus two receptions offering opportunities to view the companion exhibition and interact with the symposium speakers. For more info on the exhibition, including online

links to registration, visit www.hnoc. org/programs/symposia.html. For more information about THNOC, visit www. hnoc.org or call (504) 523-4662. Founded in 1966, The Historic New Orleans Collection is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region.
