Disney’s Most Magical Treasures by Hector Cantu
Nothing Hollywood has created matches the collectible allure of Walt Disney’s magical universe and its colorful residents. From 1928’s Plane Crazy featuring Mickey Mouse to Princess Anna of 2013’s Frozen, Walt Disney and his successors have created not only a multinational media corporation but perhaps the largest universe of entertainment memorabilia. For decades, theme parks and retailers have sold millions of Disney pins, dolls, toys, watches, mugs, plates and figurines. But truly unique Disney pieces – such as original art, movie posters and animation cels – stand atop the Disneyana summit, commanding top prices from collectors worldwide. “There aren’t many Disneyana items that reach those super high prices these days,” notes David Tosh, comics and animation art specialist at Heritage Auctions. “It has to be something extremely well-known and historic. Having said that, there still remains a healthy market for high-grade Disney comic books from the early 1940s. And the better Carl Barks’ paintings still have plenty of appeal, especially those featuring his most famous creation, Uncle Scrooge. It comes down to two things when dealing in vintage Disney material – quality and condition.” Another factor in Disneyana’s popularity – its never-ending supply of fans – won’t fade anytime soon. “Certainly, no one is in a better position of creating collectors than Disney,” says Tom Tumbusch, editor of Tomart’s Disneyana Update magazine. “They are still producing popular movies, and they run 60 million people through their theme parks every year. The happiness and magic associated with Disney characters will touch hearts for a long time to come.” The following lots represent some of the top prices realized at Heritage Auctions for Disney items sold at auction within the past eight years.
comic book stories and created Scrooge McDuck, Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose, the Beagle Boys and Magica De Spell, among others. These works routinely command well over $100,000. His The Sport of Tycoons original painting, an iconic scene completed in 1974, was sold at a November 2011 Heritage auction. MOVIE POSTER The Mad Doctor featuring Mickey Mouse Auction Price: $138,000 In this 1933 animated short, Mickey Mouse sets out to save Pluto, who’s been kidnapped by a mad doctor who wants to use him for an experimental transplant. The film (United Artists) was especially intense for its time, with some theaters refusing to show it because it was considered too scary for children. This one sheet was offered in very fine/near mint condition when sold at auction in March 2006. It’s among the highest-quality examples known.

Disney's Most Magical Treasures Continued from Page 1 COMIC BOOK Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories featuring Donald Duck Auction Price: $116,512 The first issue of Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories (Dell, 1940) is the “… definitive funny animal anthology comic after which all others were modeled,” notes Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. It was the first regularly published Disney comic book, and it remains the best-selling comic series of all time, peaking in the early 1950s with nearly four million copies an issue. This example, the only copy of any issue from #1 to #15 to be graded above 9.0, was auctioned in November 2008. MOVIE POSTER Mickey Mouse Stock Poster Auction Price: $101,575 Celebrity Productions distributed every Mickey Mouse short for about 13 months beginning in 1928. As a low-budget distributor, it’s believed Celebrity never printed individual posters for films such as Plane Crazy and The Gallopin’ Gaucho, instead using the same theater poster for all Disney shorts. As such, this 1928 poster represents the first appearance of Mickey Mouse on a one sheet and could

date from the release of Steamboat Willie. This example is the only known Celebrity Productions Mickey poster. It sold in November 2012. PROMOTIONAL ART Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by Gustaf Tenggren Auction Price: $59,750 In 1936, children’s book artist Gustaf Tenggren (1896-1970) was hired by Walt Disney Company to work as the stylist on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first American feature-length animated film. He created the distinctive, Old World look that Disney sought for his breakthrough animated feature, with his drawings perfectly capturing the major characteristics of each of the dwarfs, as well as the resonant, timeless beauty of Snow White. This original promotional art, from 1937, was used for the movie poster, promotional flyers, children’s books, as well as studio stationary used during production of the film. It was sold in February 2011. ANIMATION ART Pinocchio featuring Stromboli and little wooden boy Auction Price: $33,460 After the phenomenal success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney opened a new studio in Burbank and began work on his second feature, Pinocchio. The 1940 film won two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song for When You Wish upon a Star. A multi-layered, hand-inked and hand-painted cel from the production, with original watercolor background, was sold in August 2007.

There's an old saying about St. Petersburg, Fla.; People who live there love it; businesses that located there stay; and visitors who go there to shop and play want to come back again and again. How true! St. Petersburg and Pinellas County offer an unequaled environment for work and play. Wonderful weather and miles of sandy beaches make it a magnet for people worldwide. St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. The advertisers on this page offer a taste of what we mean.
Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

them. They went out and happened to things.” In the Year 1550, Giorgio Vasari published a book called, Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects. In it, he describes the great master thusly:
“The greatest gifts are often seen, in the course of nature, Leonardo da Vinci’s vision rained by celestial influences for walking on water. on human creatures; and sometimes, in supernatural fashion, beauty, grace, and talent are united beyond measure in one single person, in a manner that to whatever such an one turns his attention, his every action is so divine, that, surpassing all other men, it makes itself clearly known as a thing bestowed by God (as it is), and not acquired by human art. This was seen by all mankind in Leonardo da Vinci, in whom, besides a beauty of body never sufficiently extolled, there was an infinite grace in all his actions; and so great was his genius…that to whatever difficulties he turned his mind, he solved them with ease. In him was great bodily strength, joined to dexterity, with a spirit and courage ever royal and magnanimous; and the fame of his name so increased, that not only in his lifetime was he held in esteem, but his reputation became even greater among posterity after his death.” It is said that Vasari was somewhat biased toward the painters,

sculptors and architects of his native Florence, Italy, but even so, he is credited with being the first art historian, and his book has been used as a reference for centuries. Vasari was also a painter and architect of renown who was employed by the Medici. His talents allowed him to expertly appraise those of Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo was born in the town of Vinci in Tuscany, Italy, on April 15, 1452. It is said that Verrocchio He was the illegitimate son used Leonardo as a model for the angel in his painting, of Piero da Vinci, a legal notary of some standing, Tobias and the Angel. and Caterina, a peasant girl. His birth name was Leonardo (or Lionardo) di ser (son of) Piero da Vinci (from the town of Vinci). His father’s standing allowed Leonardo to receive an education. At the age of 14, he was accepted into the workshop and studio of a friend of his
father’s, the famous painter Verrocchio (Andrea di Cione). It is next to impossible to find a more talented person in history than Leonardo da Vinci. Painter, illustrator, sculptor, inventor, botanist, chemist, mathematician, astronomer, anatomist, musician, geologist, engineer, cartographer—these are his skills that are on record; he undoubtedly had more. Some of his inventions—like the automatic bobbin winder, a lens grinder, and the wire tensile strength tester—were used in his day. Other inventions recorded in his journals and notebooks were for a future day: the military tank, helicopter, parachute, car, submarine, underwater

breathing apparatus and a method for walking on water. He was an expert at designing gears, pulleys, link chains and so on. As Vasari reported: “He made designs of flour-mills, fulling-mills, and engines, which might be driven by the force of water.” (Fulling is the process of beating or stomping cloth, woolen particularly, to clean it.) Even though only about 15 of his finished paintings exist today1 (his sketches are mostly on hand), Leonardo is probably revered most for his skill as an artist. The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper are his most famous works. Leonardo da Vinci was also a great procrastinator, and he often did not finish his artwork, or it took him years to do so. The Mona Lisa was painted over four years and was still not completed on time. It never made it into the hands of Francesco del Giocondo who commissioned the painting of his wife2. Lisa del Giocondo may have seen her portrait in the early stages, but she probably never saw it completed. However, millions of people view it each year, and it is the most popular work of art in the Louvre. Leonardo was never paid for it, the most famous painting—and probably the most valuable—in the world today. The nearly 30-foot-long The Last Supper in the Convent of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan spanned about three years of interrupted work before completion. In his book, Vasari related a story about Leonardo being perplexed by whose face to use for Judas. After the convent’s Prior repeatedly hounded the great painter to hurry up and finish the masterpiece, Leonard is said to have told the Duke of Milan (his benefactor for the work) that he would use the Prior’s head for Judas’ if he did not find a suitable model. The Duke found this hilarious, and the Prior backed off on his demands. “There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see.”
Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519 in France, in the arms of the King Francis I who was his benefactor at that time. Before moving to France, he lived in the Vatican and worked for Pope Leo X. (His contemporaries, Michelangelo and Raphael, also worked for the Pope at that time.) Volumes could be written about the great Leonardo da Vinci. He would have been acknowledged as a genius extraordinaire in any day or age, including ours. “Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.” ------------------------ 1 Leonardoda-vinci.org 2 Abcgallery.com. Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our

33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.
All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.
Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.
There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.
Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net Read the Southeastern Antiquing Magazine at www.antiquingmagazine.com --and tell your friends.

theme park rides. It was sold at a November 2013 Heritage auction. Mickey Milestone 1935 ANIMATED FILM SHORT Just seven years after his creation, Mickey Mouse was a full-fledged hit for Walt Disney. In 1935, Disney released eight Mickey Mouse animated shorts, among them Mickey’s Service Station, which was the final black-and-white Mickey short produced by the studio. “It was also the first ‘Fab Three’ short, which included Mickey, Donald Duck and Goofy,” says Jim Lentz, Heritage Auctions’ director of animation art. A one-of-a-kind, hand-inked, hand-painted master setup from that 1935 seven-minute animated film is featured in Heritage’s summer animation art auction. It’s expected to realize at least $100,000. “This is an extremely rare piece,” Lentz says, “the only black-and-white cel of Goofy known to St. Ants.8th.10.2009_SEA exist in Church private hands.” Hailing from a private collection, the master set-up is

comprised of two pieces: a production nitrate cel showing Mickey, Goofy and Peg-Leg Pete’s souped-up roadster, and hand-painted master background. “No restoration has been done on these pieces,” Lentz says. “It’s 100 percent original, all-original paint and ink lines, and both pieces have their original production numbers.” Noted Disney animation expert and authenticator Peter Merolo calls cels and backgrounds from the same Disney shorts “…the most desirable gems of Disney animation collecting.” He points out that black-and-white cels are rare because the material, nitrate, is fragile. In addition, the studio often washed down cels and reused them. “So it’s extremely rare to have both a cel and a background from the same film,” Merolo says. “Probably fewer than two dozen [sets] are known to exist from Mickey shorts.” Directed by Ben Sharpsteen (1895-1980), the short included work by Disney legends Milton Kahl (1909-1987), Art Babbitt (1907-1992), Jack Kinney (1909-1992), Bill Tytla (1904-1968), Eric Larson (1905-1988), Ferdinand Horvath (1891-1973) and Wolfgang Reitherman (1909-1985). It featured the voices of Walt Disney (1901-1966) as Mickey, Clarence “Ducky” Nash (1904-1985) as Donald Duck and Vance “Pinto” Colvig (18921967) as Goofy. Similar cels have sold in the six figures. A set-up from the 1934 black-and-white short Orphan’s Benefit sold for $450,000 in 1989, while original animation from 1933’s The Pet Store, featuring Beppo the Gorilla and Minnie Mouse, realized $225,000 in 2006.
BOOK Mickey Mouse Book by Bibo & Lang Auction Price: $4,481 Originally published in 1931 by Bibo & Lang, the Mickey Mouse Book was Disney’s first licensed publication. The first printing sold out. Before going back to press, the publisher revised the book by removing the words “kill him” from song lyrics about a villain. This copy is not from the first printing but still commanded a notable price for the book. It was sold at a May 2008 auction. COMIC STRIP ART Mickey Mouse by Ub Iwerks Auction Price: $74,750 The first Mickey Mouse cartoon, Plane Crazy, was completed in 1928, entirely drawn by Ub Iwerks (1901-1971), who was credited with co-creating the character with Walt Disney. Two years later – after the subsequent release of Steamboat Willie – Iwerks was penciling the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip for King Features. Win Smith inked the strip while Disney handled the scripts. The 15th strip from the original “Lost on a Desert Island” storyline, dated Jan. 29, 1930, was sold in January 2006. -----------Heritage Auctions’ Animation Art Signature Auction 7103 is June 20-21, 2014. Julia’s Presents Another Once-In-a-Lifetime Collection For June Toy & Doll Auction James D. Julia auctioneers is no stranger to impressive, museum grade collections. Julia’s June toy and doll auction is going to feature just such a collection. If you ask anyone in the know about Steiff animals, the name of Steffes will likely come up. Enthusiasts like no other, Chuck along with his now dearly departed wife Cathy traveled the globe for approximately three decades hunting Steiff treasures to add to their remarkable collection. The beloved pair assembled a singular collection that could be considered the envy of collectors the world over. Of the approximately 120 stellar examples from the Steffes collection, which consists predominantly of bears, rabbits and cats in a variety of patterns and styles, it is difficult to choose only a few highlights to mention. Certainly one of the standouts of the grouping is an exceedingly rare and historically important black Steiff Titanic “Mourning Bear.” Made to honor those lives lost in the infamous tragedy, it is one of the most sought after vintage bears known. Only 665 were ever produced, and only 78 were ever made in this size and configuration; it features highly distinctive red felt-backed shoe button eyes to represent tears and sadness. One of the centerpieces of the Steffes’ collection, it comes complete with its original ear button and is estimated for $25,000$40,000. Also of historical significance is one of the earliest bears Steiff ever produced, the rare “Rod” bear. This blond fellow that essentially “started it all” is constructed with rod joints, long arms, humped back, felt paws, black shoe button eyes, and black hand-

formed gutta percha nose. The piéce de resistance is his original elephant button, the earliest and most desirable Steiff ID in the world. Seldom found in even the most advanced collections, this bear carries an estimate of $15,000-$22,000. An array of cast iron airplanes from one astute east coast collector includes: a Hubley “America,” a Dent “Air Express” and Vindex “Lockheed” monocoupe plane. Pressed steel vehicles include: a Buddy L bus ($4,000-$6,000). A cavalcade of toys continues with a selection of European and American tin toys: a Marklin “Priscilla” live steam ship ($15,000-$17,000) and a 36-inch Schonner “Aviso Greif” steamer ($13,000-$15,000). Cast iron mechanical banks include unusual examples: a rare Kyser & Rex Roller Skating bank with an oval rink ($20,000-$25,000) and a beehive that most have never seen ($3,400-3,600). A bevy of automatons for those partial to the mechanical will not disappoint. Featured will be a phenomenal and early tabletop bowler automaton ($13,000-$15,000); an early banjo player by Vichy ($6,000-$9,000); and a Jumeau automaton of a standing figure that powders her nose and looks in her hand mirror ($3,500-$4,500). This auction will be preceded by Julia’s summer fine glass & lamp auction taking place June 11 & 12 that will feature Tiffany, Handel, Galle, and much more. Additional information is at www. jamesdjulia.com or 207-453-7125. Free, full-color brochures are available and illustrated catalogs for $39. Both auctions will be at Julia’s auction facilities on Rt. 201 in Fairfield, Maine.

By Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $10,250 (37 bids): John Date Diving Helmet Used by Shawinigan Water & Power Company. A very scarce diving helmet manufactured by the oldest and only Canadian maker of prestigious diving helmets and gear, John Date of Montreal, Canada. This diving helmet was bought from the son of a man that worked and used this helmet for the Shawinigan Water and Power Company in Quebec in the late 1930s to the 1950s. A plaque on the back of the helmet reads, “Property of the Shawinigan Engineering Co. Limited S.E. No. 3048,” and on the front, there is the same number punched into the copper. All numbers match on this helmet top and bottom. The helmet measures top to bottom 18.5 inches high shoulder plate 16.5 inches on the inside across and front to back 14.5 inches. Condition of this helmet is it has not been cleaned and has its original patina. It has not been cleaned and has its original
patina. It has wear and some dents, but this is normal wear. It is missing two small screws on the bars over the glass. This diving helmet is a true piece of history of diving in Canada, John Date the maker and the Shawinigan Water and Power Company in Quebec. (Photo: Peter McFadden, eBay seller salestoomuch.) DBA: This is the “going rate” for this rare object. In doing research for these helmets, I encountered websites that track “want lists” for various types of antique dive equipment and found one helmet that sold in five minutes. A check on auction records showed similar helmets selling in the $9,000-to$11,000 range. U.S. Navy dive helmets tend to be the most expensive to buy. Replica helmets are abundant so if you are not knowledgeable, be careful, and either get help or get an education before opening your wallet. $249 (18 bids): Vintage 1950s Pepsi-Cola Spanish Advertising Wood Toy Truck & Bottles. After searching online for quite a while, I was unable to find another example of the 1950s Pepsi-Cola Advertising Toy Truck we are listing tonight. Measuring16.5 inches long by 6.5 inches wide and 9.5 inches tall to the top of the wood Pepsi-Cola Button, this 1950s wood toy truck has stenciled advertisements, all written in Spanish. Each side of the truck reads “Pepsi-Cola Delicioso” and “Delicioso Pepse-Cola Refrescante.” This toy delivery truck has some wear to the painted wood surface and two of the small 1.75 inches tall painted wood bottles are missing. The rubber tires have hardened over the years, and there is a tin headlight missing from the front of the cab. Overall, this rare 1950s Pepsi-Cola Toy Truck is in original unrestored condition. DBA:

Wow, and to think that I found an old 1985 newsletter where a 1950 toy Pepsi truck was going for $20, which with a CPI inflation calculator conversion would be $47.50. I would say these are getting more valuable. Advertising collectibles generally will hold value longer than toy collectibles. Trouble with this type of collectible is that when the people Memories Fleathese Antique who remember toys Mall.05.11_SEA are no longer around or no longer have disposable income, the price drops substantially. Tiffany is frequently given the credit for producing the first Jack in the Pulpit vases, but that is not true. The British were the first to make the style, but they did not call it “Jack in the Pulpit.” The poisonous plant also grows in Britain, but it is called, “Lords and Ladies.” The British gave the vase model numbers, not names. The first Jack in the Pulpit-type vase was produced in Great Britain in 1854. This is more a retail price but fair to both seller and buyer.

Civil War Collector The

I’ve been asked to research this sword to find out if it’s authentic. Can you help?
fairly common Confederate officer’s pattern sword made or agentmarked by several makers in the Deep South. The scrolls you see on the blade are part of a floral-etched pattern that originally covered the blade for 15 to 18 inches on either side, possibly with maker’s mark and sometimes even the soldier’s name. Unfortunately, in this condition the mirror-like etch will not be discernible to any great detail, but at least it shows us some detail that helps attribute it to this particular Mobile, Alabama, maker. The hilt on your sword is extremely nice and would be hard to upgrade. It appears all original and typical of other Mobilemade swords with a bulbous-shaped grip. There is a pristine example of this sword being sold by Bonham’s auction, San Francisco on June 9 from the collection of Joseph Murphy. There could not be a better example with bright, frosted etching and accompanying scabbard. It will probably have a presale estimate minimum of $8,000-$10,000 and bring at least in that range. Your example in auction would probably have a presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000 and sell in that range. It is possible it would bring the high side of this estimate or even more as the hilt has such a fine “as found” attic patina.
A foot officer pattern sword, possibly by Louis Bissonneat of Mobile, Alabama, valued at $3,000-$5,000. JS: This particular sword is a foot officer’s pattern sword, most typically associated with Confederate manufacturers in Memphis, Tennessee, and Mobile, Alabama. The reproductions of this particular pattern are extremely convincing. Your sword, in my opinion, is no doubt original and most likely made by Louis Bissonnet of Mobile, Alabama. This is a

I am in possession of what I understand to be the original 1889 Wilder’s Brigade sign-in roster for the 1889 GAR National Convention. The Historical Society in Indianapolis, Indiana, has asked me to bring the roster to them to examine it. Could you give me any idea of what a book/roster like this might be worth? Thank you for your time and consideration. JS: Wilder’s Brigade was a famous Union fighting unit during the Civil War. The unit is best known for the first use of Spencer rifles in combat (the Battle of Hoover’s Gap), and items associated with this unit are highly collectible. The reunion ribbons and program shown will sell for about $200. The unique 1889 ledger with signatures of surviving members is probably worth $400-$500 in my opinion, but in auction—if Wilder’s brigade collectors compete—it could bring more, but similar items of other units rarely sell for more than a few hundred dollars.

likely to possess them. The poetry and impressions of people of the day, before the times of mass media when writing was still done on a daily basis, are typically the contents of these albums. Similar albums sell for a wide range of prices depending on venue, but typically they rarely bring more than $100 or so. --------------John Sexton is an independent appraiser and expert of Civil War memorabilia. personalities or containing valuable laid-in papers, photographs or other memorabilia. This “Floral Album” is typical of this era. I see you did find that the James B. Duke in your album predates the birth of the famous James Buchanan Duke, father of Doris Duke and famous philanthropist who endowed several North Carolina colleges and universities. Even if this album was of this well-known Duke, value would have not been much in the collector’s market, based on the contents. Perhaps, you might even know of the best way to find a buyer. It is a handwritten baby book by James B. Duke to his sister Mary Elizabeth Duke. I know he started the Duke University endowment. One of the Largest and Best Antiques and Collectibles Shows in the Country Will Be Held July 12-13 in Portland, Ore. One of America’s largest antiques and collectibles shows will take place in Portland, Ore., on July 12 & 13. Produced by Christine Palmer & Associates, the show is celebrating its 33rd year. Held at the Portland Expo Center, there are more than 1,400 booths to view – inside and outside. If you are a treasure hunter, decorator, collector or just like to find pieces from your past, the July Expo Antique & Collectible Show is for you. Seeing these items provokes wonderful memories – items such as your grandmother’s cookie jar, holiday decorations, board games and memorabilia. “It used to be that going to a collectibles show meant completing a collection, and that’s still true for some,” noted Christine Palmer, show manager and producer. “Today, we are seeing our visitors looking for vintage clothing, postcards from travel adventures from decades ago, garden décor, tin toys and other items that make a great conversation item in the home, furniture, kitchenware, plus I just found the perfect lighting fixture to match our 1912 house. “ Attendees can buy pop collectibles, vintage clothing, glassware, silverware, antique radios from the 1930s, turn-ofthe-century furniture, movie memorabilia, collectible toys, and sports memorabilia.
