Career and Technical Education
The Career and Technical Education Department gives students various opportunities to experience real-world and hands-on learning. This was certainly the case for a group of 8th grade students who took on a school-wide project under the leadership of Mr. Daniel Maldonado. The project consisted of two classes who were challenged to create di erent designs for a new school hoodie. A winning design was to be selected for students and sta to purchase. Ultimately, both designs were used to give buyers an option.
The purpose of the project was to give students the opportunity to work as a team. Students had to learn how to work together despite the challenges they may have faced working in a group setting. Mr. Maldonado wanted the students to experience creating, marketing and selling a product from start to nish. It also allowed the students to raise money so they could take a eld trip. “We feel like it was a very good experience for all the 8th graders who were in CTE because we got to do a handson full group project. We have never been able to do a large hands-on project. We had full control and the teacher was just there to monitor.” - 8th grade students- Alondra Montes & Angelee Morales.

Spending time with friends and learning new things are what I like about school. My two favorite subjects are Science and Social Studies. I enjoy learning everything about the subject of Science and I like learning about the past and how we can learn from the mistakes that happened then. My homeroom teacher, Mr. Houston, makes our school special. His class is fun and he is very helpful.
In the future, I would like to become a Fashion Stylist. I really enjoy learning about new styles and putting out ts together. I hope to attend James Sprunt Community College.
My mom is my role model! She has experienced some hard things in her life, but she has kept on going and never gave up.

I like reading and learning about Science. I also like learning about Social Studies. Richard, my friend who moved, made my school special. My teachers and friends also make my school special.
I have not thought about which college to go to yet; however, I would like to become a Paleontologist. A paleontologist would be a good future profession for me because I like learning about the past and about dinosaurs.
I like to help people pick out books from the library and I think a librarian would also be a good future profession for me. I like to learn new stu every day and I love going to school because it is fun. Being rewarded for reading my AR books is something I really like.
My role model is my dad because he works very hard. He works to get the things we need and he is very brave.

My favorite thing about school is my teacher, Mrs. Quinn. She likes to do fun activities.
I like that we get to learn new things that we haven’t learned before in each grade. My favorite subject is Math because my brother helps teach me at home.
Actually, my brother, Alexander Ortiz, is my role model because he is a good person and good at soccer. When I grow up, I want to be a soccer player at UNC-Chapel Hill. I want to be a re ghter too.

All the nice people make my school special because they make me happy. What I like most about school is that I get to learn and get to play hide-and-go seek tag with my friends.
My favorite subject is Reading, because I get to learn about books and I love the pictures.
I enjoy reading the titles of books so I can know what books to read.
When I grow up, I want to be a teacher because I get to teach kids and help them learn.
My teacher Mrs. King is my role model. I like it when she gives us ice cream and during centers she calls us to her table so we can learn. I love it when she does that!

My personal motto for education is to support teachers so that they can reach their full potential as educators and their students can be successful.

I have been in education for 32 years. I started as a high school Science teacher and have been in my current role for 8 years. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from UNC-Pembroke and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from East Carolina University. In high school, my biology teacher was my favorite teacher and my favorite subject. She did such a great job in her role and inspired me to be a teacher.
Duplin County Schools overall and especially BFG are special to me because we still hold onto strong morals and values that you don’t necessarily see everywhere else. We are very family oriented and take great care of our students and sta .
Bright Spots in my role as Digital Learning and Media Coordinator are the Battle of the Books program and our Makerspace. I am passionate about our Battle of the Books program at BFG. I want students to have access to quality literature that inspires them to be lifelong readers. The Makerspace gives me the opportunity to work with teachers side-by-side in a collaborative way. It gives students a voice regarding their projects and gives them ownership of what they are working on.
